Don't let the generic European-friendly name fool you, this is some of the best Indian food I've had - ever. Period. Maybe even the best meal in a long time.
I'm not a food critic or a chef, but I am fortunate to live in a very diverse part of the US and there is no lack of Indian restaurants around me. I also have easy access to home-cooked meals, courtesy of my mama (be jealous, she is amazing). Still, I cannot sing enough praises of the meal that was delivered to us from here.
I was skeptical at first, but very hungry - I ordered a very generic meal, veggie biryani and paneer jalfreezi for me and a grill mix for my husband, because I figured how bad can they screw this up? We are hungry and will probably eat whatever they send. Boy, I was in for a treat.
I asked for "extra spicy" thinking nobody ever makes it as spicy as I want. Well they do here. I got to keep my biryani all to myself because it was so spicy my husband wouldn't eat it. This is not a complaint by any means, I was delighted. The jalfreezi was less spicy, but tasted so fresh. I could tell someone has grated fresh ginger into soft, fresh tomatoes as a saucy base. The paneer was soft and inviting - I must admit I could only eat 3 bites of this because the curry and raita with the biryani is so filling. The portion sizes are fair and they make amazing leftovers.
My husband seemed to enjoy the meat as well (I don't eat it) - I saw him wolf down a piece of meat I could tell he couldn't identify and asked what it was. He replied "It's lamb, I think" but I knew it wasn't - it was goat. Still, coming from someone who never eats goat, the lack of hesitation is a huge compliment.
Special props to the raita. Holy shit. How can yogurt and cucumber and maybe some sugar/salt taste so good? The creamy richness of the yogurt is the perfect calming end to the bursting joy of flavors that was my mouth after I ate my meal (with plenty for tomorrow). I can't believe they give this away as a side.
I also must add a note about their careful packaging - each dish came wrapped in cling wrap to avoid spilling, foil to keep it warm and then a cute little checkered paper that I imagine all Dutch food is wrapped in. So thoughtful. So much love.
The travesty of my life is this food being a 14 hour flight away from me. Damn. read more
