As befits a Japanese restaurant, the decor is nice. The food is not all Japanese - there's some fusion influence too. The complimentary starter was a simple salad, which was decent. Beef curry was good. The beef was chunkier than expected (not minced beef). It was topped with a nice crispy garnish (fried onion?). The miso soup was good too. The lobster ramen was good. There was not much lobster but for the price you don't expect much. The soup was good - diluted khao soi (Northern Thai) gravy, with an added umami punch from the seafood. The lobster was especially tasty: good firm flesh, well fried & tasty.

When scrolling Instagram, Nakamori came up as a suggested account to follow. The food looked really good so I clicked on their website. It turns out that Nakamori is where Zen used to be before they moved up north. My mother and I wanted to try this place because we used to go to Zen often. We also heard that Mr Nakamori used to work at another of our favourite restaurants, Mikado. Just a heads up though- the traffic on Eglinton can be frustrating. If possible, take any other road BUT Eglinton to get here if you're coming from the west. For lunch, you can either order ahead of time (and then pay when your food is ready) or through the Ritual app. We ordered from our phone when we got there. Their site said that it would take thirty minutes, but the food was ready before that. Due to COVID, you cannot go into the restaurant so you have to wait in your car and they will bring your order to you. The menu is Japanese, but with a multicultural twist. Kudos to Nakamori for their creativity! For example, they have a jerk chicken karaage don. For Friday's lunch, we opted for sushi only. 1. Spicy lobster California roll - delicious; it was spicy, but with a citrus accent 2. Tekka maki - also good 3. Dynamite roll - packed with flavour and also quite good 4. Veg futo maki - all vegetables, included Japanese pickles I was impressed and can't wait to try Nakamori again. Good for: Japanese, fusion, take out

    Seafood Ginger Miso Soup

Nakamori is a beacon of Japanese cuisine in the Scarborough landscape. I've eaten there many times in the past, always pleased with the quality of their fresh fish offerings. In my most recent visit, I opted for the Lunch Omakase, Nobu's six-course tasting menu. The meal started with an appetizer sampler consisting of Seafood Ceviche Taco (daily fish cured in yuzu juice, aji pepper, scallion, watermelon radish, cilantro), caprese salad (cherry tomatoes, bocconcini cheese), and Cajun Tuna Tataki (seared tuna with cajun spice, scallion, sesame ponzu). The fish taco was sweet and had a nice crisp texture. The spicy tuna had wonderful flavors and was the highlight of the course. The second course was Seafood Ginger Miso Soup (flavorful seafood broth soy bean soup with daily four kinds sashimi grade fish). What a surprising delight, to be greeted with a soul warming soup with complex flavors, and hidden treasures in the broth such as fresh shrimp, scallop and salmon. The third course was Wasabi Beef Steak (charbroiled AAA angus strip loin, wasabi, soy graze, steamed rice). This dish had very delicate flavors, and the steak was thinly sliced and perfectly cooked medium rare, giving it a delectable texture, with a light hint of wasabi. The fourth course was an appetizer sampler with Wasabi Tempura Prawn (crispy black tiger shrimp tempura, wasabi aioli) and Jerk Chicken Karaage (crispy chicken seasoned soy jerk spice, mango aioli). The texture of the tempura left much to be desired. The karaage was nicely prepared, moist and tender, an improvement over the tempura. The fifth course was Sushi Nigiri (6 sushi rice and a single topping of fresh fish + tuna maki). Chef Nobu shines in this course, with a selection of sake (salmon), hamachi (yellow tail), hotate (scallop), otoro (fatty bluefin tuna), unagi (eel), and uni with ikura (sea urchin) nigiri sushi, plus toro maki. The selection was fresh and absolutely lovely. The otoro offered the melt-in-your mouth experience, and I loved that the unagi sauce was mild, not overpowering. Uni was serviceable. The sixth course was green tea tiramisu, served with homemade roasted green tea ice cream. In addition to being a feast to the eyes, this dessert offered unique flavors which paired nicely together, and was a light finish to the meal, not too sweet. Service was good, but the courses came in very quick succession, not allowing for savoring and enjoying the multi-course experience. Ambiance is simple. Parking available on the premises. The area is served by TTC lines 16, 86, 116. TLDR; good Japanese food, fresh fish, a few missteps but still highly recommended

    Curry lobster ramen

Took my husband here for his birthday and it was an enjoyable experience. Food was beautifully presented and meticulously crafted. You can tell they put time and care into each dish. Seems like it was a family ran business, husband is the sushi chef and wife is in charge of the hot food. The Taiwanese server was amazing, super polite and attentive. Curry lobster ramen was surprisingly good. It has a nice kick to it and the deep fried morsels of lobster were nice and crispy. Reminds me of a Koi Soi in Thai food. The caprese salad amuse bouche was such a great start. It was refreshing with the yusu and herbs. Matcha tiramisu was yummy too although for me it had too much cream on top. I love the fact that you have around 7 ice cream choices for the tiramisu, unique choices too! The basil chocolate was soooo good with the chocolate bits. Few dishes were a slight let down. These include ceviche tacos, jerk karaage and wasabi ebi. Ceviche had a sweet marmalade which was odd. Jerk karaage was good but too mild. Wasabi ebi was plump and crispy but it tasted more like pesto and I was looking forward to the kick. Couple of areas for improvement include atmosphere and communication. They can benefit from even paints on the ceiling. As for communication, they never answered my question about omakase in our email communication and our reservation was not found when we arrived. However, the warm and genuine service more than made up for it! All in all, it was a good experience and I would definitely come back!

    Wasabi tempura prawns

A gem in Scarborough! I'd been wanting to try this place for awhile and luckily gotten my change recently. Went for lunch (good time to go as it is pretty empty) and was quite impressed with the decor and service. You can watch the chef's preparing the sushi and sashimi from the counter in front. the tea comes in a very heavy iron pot, with small cups. None of that plastic stuff here! The menu (at least lunch), is small, which I'm grateful for, and has a twist (jerk chicken karaage, wasabi prawns), with some obvious favourites (spicy salmon rolls, tuna rolls, etc). Everything is presented beautifully. I ordered the spicy salmon roll (I couldn't stay long for lunch) and it was pretty good...I would have preferred a spicier kick, but that's just me. I had one of the wasabi prawns that someone at the table ordered and it was good - the batter not to thick, the prawn nice and juicy and a good spice level. You get 4 pieces....more of an app than a meal. I'm definitely coming back here to try other things on the menu.

    Aburi saba roll ($14)

This place was alright. We got two rolls to share - aburi saba roll and butter teriyaki scallop roll. The first roll was tiny, over the top with the red radish but yummy. The second roll wasn't as good but still decent. I burned my tongue a bit not expecting it to be so hot. Again, too much red radish. For the price that I'm paying, I expect each bite to have the perfect ratio of ingredients and temperature. We got the seafood ceviche taco to start and I thought that was pretty good. Slightly too sweet and too saucy but still very delicious. The star of the whole meal was the dessert! The tiramisu was so creamy and the ice cream was packed with flavour. I would come back just to try their other ice cream.

3.5 Star This review is based on my lunch experience at Nakamori. Bento Box ($25) which is a lunch special offerings has a lot of food: - miso soup and salad - sashimi - bento box: Tempura+Chicken Teriyaki+4 pc of sushi I enjoyed most of the elements aside from the heavily batter tempura with the sauce Home Made Hojicha Ice Cream ($4) was the highlight of my lunch with creamy and full of roasted tea taste! There is a charge for green tea ($2) but worth the cost as it was served in a nice cast iron tea pot and with nice aroma. $40 Omakase during lunch seems reasonable with 24 hours reservation notice but I would ask the chef to skip tempura It is worth giving Nakamori a try if you are in the neighbourhood and wants some decent Japanese food. Nakamori is probably your only choice around here.

    Appetizer - Veggie Tempura

** 3.5 stars ** I came here with high expectation based on the good reviews on Yelp. My review is based on my recent visit during lunch time. Good - Very attentive service. Since I had children with me and the staff even brought some ice to cool down the boiling hot water for them. I really appreciated their consideration. Chef was very creative on the dish. Since the neighbourhood has different ethnic groups, his dishes were Japanese fusion, e.g. Jerk chicken Karaage ($8). We enjoyed this appetizer very much. House made ice cream ($4 per scoop) was very delicious! That is the best matcha and Roasted brown tea ice cream I had in Toronto so far. I would come back just for the dessert. Presentation of dishes were aesthetic which was standard for authentic Japanese restaurants. Teriyaki chicken on rice ($15) - we opted for no jerk spice from the original menu. The chicken was grilled nicely. Average - Veg Tempura ($9) - the batter was thick; the sauce was not flavourful. My child commented it was just okay. Lunch sushi roll ($17) and sushi Nigiri ($18) - freshness of fish was just okay. The tuna in the roll looked a little too red and texture was meshy. The sushi rice was just okay. Price is on the high side especially in this neighbourhood. For this price range, I would expect better quality sushi and rolls.

    Chirashi Don

4.5 Stars! Simple yet elegant and nice! Haven't been to Nakamori for quite some time as we live pretty far away. We were passing by the area and decided to go for a quick lunch. My wife had the Nigiri set and I had the Chirashi don. The complimentary salad was very nice, in miso dressing topped with a fried tofu. The fishes in Nigiri and Chirashi were really fresh, when accompanied with its soy sauce (I believe in-house prepared), can truly taste the authentic Japanese flavour. Chef Nakamori served us with joy and style while the waitresses were very attentive and nice. The ambience is very tranquil. Truly a delight to dine in there. It is a hidden gem in Toronto! Try the Omakase if you have time... we tried 3-4 times before and they always amaze us.

    Michelle W.

Tried 3 of their special rolls and they were just very avg. most disappointing is their lobster roll - it tasted like chinese sweet and sour pork. Typical japanese decor but relatively run down.

    Dug L.

Beautiful food served by friendly and caring staff. Sushi is as good as it gets in Scarborough...trust me I've tried them all! Definitely get some rolls and try at least one of the fresh original ice creams. Presentation of Sushi rolls is premium, and new fresh takes on sushi rolls are welcome and innovative. Great job chef! Also, as many have noted, you should probably get a rez if you are planning to arrive after 5:45.

Green tea tiramisu with chai ice cream
    A K.

Don't be fooled. This restaurant, hidden in an unassuming strip mall, offers dishes to tantalize your taste buds. Most were delightful: the jerk chicken karaage with mango aioli was a hit, along with the generous serving of tender, succulent (not fatty) pork ribs. The steak was delicious but not strong on wasabi if that's what you expected. We weren't fans of the baby potato poutine (tangy gravy) but it was original nonetheless. The sheer variety of homemade ice cream was staggering. We tried a scoop of chai (outstanding) along with green tea tiramisu. Staff are super friendly and the quality of the food is remarkable, well worth the price. We'll be back to explore more of the menu!

Lunch sushi selection ($17) comes with salad and soup (not pictured) and jerk chicken karaage appetizer in rear ($7)
    Mark S.

This is probably my best lunch in 2016: so good you'd slap your sensai for it. I came after reading "Chowhound" East-end expert "Googs" call it her new favorite place in Scarborough. The space has lost a little of its cozy ambiance from when Zen occupied this space (more open now), but the fusion dishes here make the place worthy of its predecessor. The "jerk chicken karaage with mango aioli" appetizer would be a meal in itself and is a must-have if you come for lunch OR dinner. The sushi rolls are equally inventive. I recognized the maki and the California rolls, but the unrecognizable ones were real stars, showcasing some real talent by the sword-wielding chef. Earlier reviews noted the lunch bento was $21, which is a better fit with my lunch budget then today's price of $25, but it was a very filling meal, making it still a great value with lots of variety: teriyaki, tempura (I LOVED those shrimp with green sauce - can't believe another reviewer complained about these), veggies, sashimi and on and on. No room for desserts this trip, but photos here on Yelp look great. The sake menu also looked great for a dinner here, but this summer heat has me sleepy enough after lunch without sake.

Spicy tuna and salmon. Look at that Water Melon Radish !
