They were genuinely friendly, as well as concerned that my manicure would be durable (I got an assertive but kind suggestion to put my hands under the nail dryer a third time, followed by a raspberry lemonade lollipop and a smile). I came in as a walk in. They were able to take me right away. I was a little nervous, first time there. Another client assured me - she's been having mani pedi's there for 15yrs! So I relaxed, and put my hands & feet in the very capable hands of Vi. I don't get color, so I asked Vi to just buff my nails. They came out great. This is my absolutely favorite nail salon in Boston. Tina does the best job overall but most of the nail techs are very good. Mani/Pedi is only $30, and you can get a gel mani for $25. I saw some terrible reviews for the oldwaxing person, but she is no longer working there. The current woman who does all the waxing is fantastic. They were packed on a Sunday afternoon but squeezed me in last-minute no problem after a nearby salon told me they could only give me an express pedicure due to lack of time. All of the staff were incredibly polite, kind and sweet. One of the most welcoming nail salon atmospheres I've ever been in, actually. Great paint job on the toes, the only things I wished they would have done would be a hot towel on the legs and a little more scrubbing of callouses. Pro tip: if you're paying with card, make sure you tell them how much of a tip you want on it before you give it to them! I didn't know that and made that mistake. read more

Awful experience. I went here for a bikini and underarm wax as my usual was fully booked. I was told to sit "out the back and wait", so I sat in what looked like a kitchen for about 15 minutes. Then a lady cam in and told me take off my pants, at which point she then left me just lying on the waxing table for about 10 minutes while she was outside chatting. The entire time she was doing my my waxing she kept insisting that she also do my eyebrows (why I am not sure, having only had them done the week before). I politely declined and left after just bikini and underarms. On my way out the waxer followed me and pointed at me as she spoke in vietnamese to the other staff who then laughed. I'm on my third shellac manicure with Nail Stylus and love it. I've never gotten shellac anywhere else, so I have nothing to compare it to, but friends who I've gone with to Nail Stylus have said this place does shellac especially well. Nail Stylus charges $25 which I think is a great value considering how long it lasts. $12 for a regular manicure that wears down as soon as I need to wash some dishes isn't something I'll do again. My first shellac lasted about 3.5 weeks before it started peeling from the bottom. For my second one, I put a little clear polish on the bottom once it started growing up and it lasted about 5 weeks. They always seem to be busy every time I go in there. The first two times I had an appointment after work and was seen right away. Today, I just decided to go over there (a Sunday afternoon) and I had to wait 10-15 minutes before someone got started on my nails. Some of the ladies do massages during the manicure and some don't - it depends who you get. read more

I've gone to super expensive places up and down Newbury and I don't know why I keep thinking I will find something better than Nail Stylus. Nail Stylus offers body waxing, but there is only one woman who does eyebrow waxing and she is the most talented waxer I've ever had. I couldn't begin to give her enough praise. I've had average pedicures there too, and you might think that is a tepid response, but i've had average pedicures that cost me twice as much. Why spend more? Good service, great price. I have been looking everywhere for an affordable place to get my eyebrows waxed. I passed by this place every day on my way home and never gave it a second glance. On the outside, the salon looks dingy and easily fads into the background with all the flashy and kitschy shops along Beacon. But do not overlook this place! The price of $10 is really great when you compare it to other places. The wax itself was quick, relatively painless, and she did an extremely neat and tidy job. I don't usually give poor reviews but I feel that I should share my experience with others. I've been here at least 10 times since I moved to Boston and initially thought it was a solid nail salon, though not among my favorites. I agree with reviews that Amy is one of the best there, though I was often frustrated with her pushing me to also purchase additional services (pedi/eyebrow etc.) I had also an experience there when they took 2+ hours to finish a mani/pedi and were rude to me when I expressed that I had somewhere I needed to be. 2+ hours for a mani pedi is way in excess based on many experiences at previous salons. Recently, I stopped in for a gel manicure and the owner did my nails. The owner is very cold and not customer service oriented. When I expressed I was not comfortable with how much cuticle she was removing and asked her to stop she said this was necessary. I should have just left because my cuticles were sore for a few days after and it was not worth the final look of the manicure. I also had an experience with the owner where I expressed that the gel permanently stained my nails and she said it was my fault for having too many gel manicures. Maybe, but it has only happened once in my long gel history. The general trend with the owner is that she is always right and not willing to adapt for customers. All in all, I'll take my money and go elsewhere where they are kinder and customer service oriented. This place just isn't worth the discomfort. read more

I told them I would come back another time and had their closing time wrong. Hi: I have been going to Nail Stylus for the last 20 years. They are great for the price. This is basically a "no frills" establishment. If you want "top shelf" service you need to go at a time when it is not a zoo, or you need to make an appointment. Both Vicky and also Vie do waxing. Vicky is the owner and Vie is an employee. Vie is great and does an amazing job with eyebrows. She is very quick and as painless as can be. (If it is your first time getting waxing, take a Motrin, because no matter where you go it will hurt. Also, if you shave in between it is really going to hurt. I trust Vie to look at me and do my eyebrows and go with what she thinks looks best on me. I have gone many other places and travel all over the country on business including NYC, and for the price, you cannot beat it. Also- on manicures or pedicures, my favorites are- Amy, Tina, or Vie. If you make an appt you can request whom you want. If you walk in and it is busy you will wait for any of these 3 women, because they are in higher demand because the regulars know who to ask for. Also, Mie just came back and she does outstanding acrylic or gel nails. Gel nails look more natural and it is an art to have these done. Most salons charge double the price of Nail Stylus. There used to be a gentleman, Sonny, who was the best- but he would call in sick a lot and Vicky will no longer lets him work there. These women work 12 hour days, 6 days a week and make on average $200/ week. Try living in Boston on this type of income. They rely on tips- and they will bend over backwards for you if you become a regular "and tip". The worst time to go there is on a Saturday or a Friday evening. Best times are- -Sunday am (it is very quiet) -Any other am- or before the rush hour timeframe I cannot comment on Brazilian waxing because I would need to get anethetized to even consider it; how anyone can even get this done is beyond me but I know that they do all types of waxing. My only other recommendation in the Brookline area (if you want to spend the extra $'s (because it is double the price) is to call Heads Up on Harvard Street and ask for Josephine for a pedicure. It will cost $45 versus $20 and she will use the "scraper" or "cutter" to remove all dead skin. The pedicure will last you a month or more- but you will pay more for it and she will spend 1 hour on you. Your feet will look like they were photographed in a magazine. Good luck- I spent many of my "single days" heading to Heads Up before going away for weekends. I wanted to like this place - I got a pedicure and it seemed like they were doing a good job, but the salon could have definitely been cleaner overall for a Saturday morning first appointment. Polish came out nice, until a few hours later when my toe was swollen and painful. I had to go to the doctor and they said it was a toe infection from the tools used in cutting cuticles and deep into the nails. I have never used Yelp and signed up immediately upon leaving Nail Stylus. HORRIBLE is an understatement. The woman who did my pedicure was rushed and rough. She barely used a file or cuticle cutter. I left with nail polish on the sides of my toenails and remnants of nail polish from the remover she used to take off my old polish on my toes. I was drying my toes for about 10 minutes and she came over and told me that I needed to get up and pay. I had to go. Most places have you dry your nails for 15 minutes. I am a frequent customer and I have been quite happy with them. I have to say since the price is relatively cheaper than others in the city, YOU GOT WHAT YOU PAID FOR THE PRICE. The nature of Asian nail salon is not like any SPA you might have been to. They chat in their own language when serving you; they answer their phone, they constantly talk to you like giving orders to a dog (sit, come, pay!) because of the language boundary; however, if you understand the culture, both you and your nail stylist will be much happier, like me and mine! And trust me, these Asian people have a much better attitude and skills then those on Newberry st. I visit Nail Stylus once every two weeks, not because the Nail paints worn off quickly but because I bit my nails hard, even with those fake acrylic layers on. The lady has always been very nice to me (Without laughing at my behavior and poor little nails) and spend almost 1.5 hours making sure the color and the thickness are exactly what I want. Based on the work and time they devoted, I think 15 dollars of refill is hard money to earn. I always tease her that her work deserves 45 dollars so I give generous tip. If you take care of your nails frequently like me and care more about the results, budget, but not silly cultural differences, this is a right place for you. read more

The worst pedicure I have ever had...and I average 1-2/month in San Francisco. But I was traveling and looking to Yelp for advice on where to go. Sadly, I did not head the reviews that said "they drew blood" and that is exactly what happened to me. They are super aggressive trimmers and when they cut my toe cuticles, it bled all over. They did not even apologize. It was very strange. And the polish...it was all over my big toe. It took them 8 minutes just to remove all the paint from my skin as the person sloppily put on the color. Seriously the worst experience I have ever had at a nail salon. read more

I went there a week ago. The Pedicure was ok, I had better. For the manicure gel, the lady is actually pretty good. I have had the gel done before from other places and they sucked.
