3 years ago I left a great rating for Nail Stylus and I'm happy to report that they still get 5 stars from me. I have gone to other more posh places in Brookline and boston and have not had a manicure (primarily I get gel but sometimes regular) last as long as when I get them done by Diana. She is meticulous with her work and always goes above and beyond. They practice great safety measures and I typically call a few days in advance to secure a reservation. This past time I got a gel manicure and regular pedicure and the picture is of my manicure 3 WEEKS LATER to the date. It's funny, sometimes I'll go in and Diana mentions I haven't been in for a while and I say it's because your manicures are TOO GOOD. I'm pretty rough on my hands and workout a lot, so with a simple cuticle oil daily, this manicure has been preserved for 21 days now. She gave me misshapen, rough-looking, sloppily-painted nails the first time around. Then, I complained to her and she was like OK I'll fix it. I am aware she spent three hours on my nails to try and make them perfect. I felt sorry, until I saw the other side of her. She was rude and unwilling to admit her faults. There were white lines where the acrylic hit my nails. it was a sloppy job. When I pointed it out, she played dumb, refusing to admit that there were white lines. Incredibly stubborn. Before all this, the surrogate manager (a 17 year old named Jen took the managers place because she was on vacation) told me that she never even comes here herself because they are terrible at the nails. She told me that if she were me, she would have walked out a long time ago without paying. It was that bad. This lady didn't know what she was doing. I had to sit there, with a packed store, filing my own nails because Kelly couldn't do them right. It was ridiculous. After it all, it was still a sloppy job. I asked for my money back. They were stubborn and wouldn't give it to me. So I was like, "fine whatever I don't even care anymore" and began to walk out. Then I stopped at the stairs and told them that I thought about it and I wanted AT LEAST my tip back, because she didn't deserve it- she didn't know how to do her job. I called before, see if I could get a manicure even 1hour before they close ( don't wanna be this annoying customer who show up too late ) Diana took care of my nails and I am very happy. I've been here twice for eyebrow waxing. The first time I left loving my shapely eyebrows, but like Amanda H. I felt a lot of pressure to get an upper lip and chin wax as well. "Why you no like wax your lip and chin? Now look hairy and ugly--I make you clean and pretty, ok?" After the third or fourth time the woman said this, I was really uncomfortable. My lip and chin wax turned out well, though. The second time was the deal breaker. A different woman waxed my face and OMFG, she didn't know how to do it or something because my face wasn't only red it was rashy afterward. Bits of the skin on my eyelid, upper lip, and chin formed a scab that I had to pick off in the next 3 days. It was so gross and mortifying. Don't come because it's dirt cheap ($20 for eyebrows, upper lip, and chin). Think of your FACE and your beautiful skin. read more

After reading hot and cold reviews on Yelp for this place, I still went because they were open on a Sunday night, when my girlfriend and I decided at 6 p.m. that we could not face the new fall season without a new pedicure. I'm really glad that I went--Nail Stylus was still full of customers at 7 p.m. and the nail technicians were happy to accomodate us. Although a mani/pedi combo cost only $30 for both, we both received a 4-star experience. They were incredibly sweet, taking my friend even after they turned over their "CLOSED" sign (we had called ahead for a joint appointment but I got there first) then timing their work so that my friend and I could sit together in their cushy massage chairs to get our pedicures. They never rushed us, despite the fact that they were open later than other salons, and were perfectionistic in their treatment of our hands and feet-an experience which can be so rejuvenating after a long week (or uncomfortable, scary and even painful if done wrong). And after nearly a week, neither nail set has chipped. I would definitely go back--although now that the famous Boston chill is on its way, my toes might have to wait til next summer. read more

So, I got my eyebrows waxed here and I don't plan on going back. I get there and I am waiting by the little room that they do the waxing in. One girl and the person doing the waxing come out and then the wax lady wisks me in and I sit down on the waxing table. She def did not change the paper on the table, gross, but I had my clothes on. Secondly, she starts putting the wax on my face before I even tell her what I'd specifically like her to do. So I had to tell her after she put the wax on my face. So backwards. They don't even put lotion on after waxing you, a little moisturizer would be nice. I got home and realized I still had wax on my face. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the whirlwind event that was going to Nail Stylus yesterday for eyebrow waxing. I stopped in yesterday after work for a desperately-needed brow waxing after hemming and hawing for a month, looking for a new place to get them done since my move to Brookline. I was whisked to the back room, after a few attempts to understand exactly WHERE I was going. Employee: "Sit in the chair." Me: "This one?" (moving to a chair nearby) Employee: "No, move back more." Me: "Oh, back here?" (going to a chair further back in the salon) Employee: "No, back more." Me: "Here?" Employee: "No." So no one bothered to just say, "Go ALL THE WAY to the back", which kind of bugged me, because how was I supposed to know where to go? It was my first time in there! Finally I get to the back and lie down on one of the little "waxing cots" (for lack of a better term) and a little Asian lady comes in lickety-split and praises the shape of my eyebrows before slathering on the hot wax and getting down to business. After this, she douses my brows with some awful greasy camphor-smelling solution that, I would imagine, probably helps moisturize and protect the skin after being waxed, but feels disgusting on my skin at the moment. It's about a 5-minute process, start to finish, and before I know it, I'm on my merry way to Stop 'N Shop sporting a strip of red skin above my eyes. In summation, Nail Stylus is incredibly efficient and fast, but the trade-off is the abrupt manner of service. I doubt that one would be here long enough to have juicy conversations with any of the employees. read more

I don't really like getting my eyebrows waxed-- it hurts, my eyes tear, and my skin is red for an hour. But my eyebrows grow in odd shapes, and not the same as each other, so when I pluck them myself I look unnaturally quizzical at all times. Luckily Diana at Nail Stylus is capable of working magic. I always look a thousand times better upon leaving. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair removal. Out of probably 30 waxes, only once I walked in and found out Diana wasn't in (I never have an appointment so those are pretty great statistics). I also use Nail Stylus for mani/pedis when I'm in the mood. The quality varies depending on who does your nails. However, for $10 manis and $20 pedis, it's a guaranteed bargin. Shellac/gel manicures are $25 but considering they last 1-2 weeks the cost is worth it. If you're going to be a regular I recommend finding the person you like the best, and then make an appointment with that manicurist so you're guaranteed a great job every time. read more

So I sent a quick text message to my friend...sure enough, Nail Stylus takes plastic...but the big question is...by the time I get from Comm. Ave to Coolidge Corner, will they be open? The answer is...YES! I've never seen a salon with these type of business hours. M-F, they're open from 9am to 9pm...Sat 9am to 8pm, and Sun 9am to 7pm... The place was definitely busy, even tho I got there close to 7:30. I waited for about 5 minutes and was promptly taken care of. So it's a 4 star rating because...while the service was good (it was average. I wasn't ignored, but I wasn't being served champagne and caviar...ew, caviar.), I'm really impressed by the hours and the fact that they take plastic (which, in all honesty, shouldn't surprise me because I'm sure there are more expensive items at their salon and not many people in their right minds carries that type of cash...) Sorry to all the girls that love manicures, but I just wanted my stubbly, nail-bitten nails back. Our show starts with me walking into Nail Stylus... Me: How much to have tips removed? Lady at Nail Stylus: You want refill? Me: No, I just want them removed. LaNS: You want tips removed and manicure? Me: No... I just want them removed. LaNS: Ok, sit here. ...30 seconds later... LaNS: No, now sit over here (moves me somewhere else). Then some girls pulls out all the materials to REFILL THE TIPS. Holy crap, are you people functionally retarded? I reiterated that I wanted the tips REMOVED. Then the girl starts trying to pry them off. Now, I've gotten tips removed before and this is seriously not gonna work, those fuckers are super-glued down. I need to put my hands in a solution first. She finally realizes this and goes to get the solution... About a half hour later and a few more "no thank you"s to a manicure, I finally had my happy real nails back. The ladies smirked and laughed at my small nails then said something to each other in Korean, which made me feel fantastic, and then ordered me to use that clear polish that makes your nails stronger. Found Nail Stylus through yelp and it seemed to have the best reviews in the area along with decent pricing and a great proximity to Anna's Taqueria. Mani/Pedi's I think run for about $30 and they do a fine job. They don't jack up your cuticles and make you bleed and regret ever wanting your nails to look decent like some places. The atmosphere is comfortable and they seem to always have at least one person available for walk ins. Seems to be on the busier side on Fridays after work but we may have just caught a high school prom situation one time.
