11/10 Gel Pedi! Highly recommend treating yourself to the deluxe pedicure at Nail Star. The atmosphere was clean + intentionally relaxing, beverages offered, pleasant music playing, quality of service , no wait time, and prices very reasonable. Entire staff was phenomenal. The ladies in here were so sweet. I believe Kim did my nails. She was fast, sweet, super helpful and my nails looked absolutely beautiful after. I came in like 45 mins before closing and she still happily accommodated me and the shop even closed before she was done, she made no complaints and was still very pleasant. We visited this salon a few days ago, it was refreshing to have friendly service but the quality of work was not great. I had been there for two+ hours, asked for a dip French manicure, which was done but on top they painted on the French manicure too... I've never had that done before. I called a day ahead of time to schedule my pedicure and eyebrow wax. I wanted to make an appointment so that I didn't run into being in an overcrowded business for a super long time. I made my appointment for 10am. When I arrived, I was taken to the pedicure chairs right away! Social distancing was definitely in place and Tom took his time and gave me a great pedicure. I was able to relax and not worry about the details of filing, scrubbing, painting, etc. because Tom had it all handled. The lady who did my eyebrows (I don't remember her name) was very sweet. I did notice once I got to the car that my eyebrows could've been cleaned up a little more. Overall, I love this place. They are very clean and do a great job. read more

The acrylic BURNED. I've been getting my nails done for a long time at various locations and that has never happened to me personally, so if you have sensitive skin or nails be careful. Also, I've already had to glue on 2 nails that fell off. For $50 there are better places you can go. I like the customer service however, the nail polish doesn't last. When you spend $85 for a pedicure and a manicure and you pay the extra for the gel polish. So, yesterday was my second time visiting this establishment and I have to say that you can expect a reasonable service for a slightly higher than average cost. I live in the DC area and can easily find a simple manicure for approximately $10; however a simple manicure, with zero frills, at this place will cost you $15, which is a conundrum for me. The first time I patronized this establishment was with my Mom and we enjoyed our visit, but the time it took for her to get the same treatment I received was about 30 minutes longer even though we started at the same time. She does not have anything unusual or odd about her feet or hands, and in fact, as a stylist and beautician probably takes better care than I do of her own feet and hands. So, realistically, I'm going to say that it kind of depends on who you get. Always remember to ask that they push back your cuticles rather than cut them away and always stay under the UV lamps for twice as long as they recommend because there are no fans to accompany them. That said, the host got my name right and remembered it, the polish selection was decent and not too ancient, and the place is pristine. Parking is not a problem and they accept walk-ins. Also, they accept credit cards and allow you to tip on them, though I always recommend tipping in cash directly to your esthetician. read more

I only continue going to this place because it's around the corner and I rarely have to wait. The older guy at the front desk is very friendly and a great host. The nail techs are friendly sometimes....I guess depending on their day. There have been a few times when I had to return to the shop the next day because the color has already chipped off...not because of the polish because I always get dip powder. They charged an additional $10 to get a "manicure" even though i requested a mani with dip powder. You'd think they'd do it because it's part of the nail process. Besides that, I do like that the nail shop is always clean. However, when I do get my brows waxed, I do have to ask them to wash their hands. One time when I watched the lady NOT wash her hands after I initially asked, she acted offended, washed her hands, came in the room drying her hands saying "see, see, I wash my hands and I'll use hand sanitizer too right now in front of you so you can see". Disrespectful. (I no longer deal with her and request other people.) There have been times that I've seen them get up from touching someone's feet and hands and then go straight to the room to wax someone else's face. Disgusting. read more

I was able to walk right in and get my services done right away. You get to pick your polishes (gel, dip, regular polish) they are on the wall. I got a Gel pedicure and manicure. The cost was $75 dollars. I did not feel like she was rushing through the services. They advertise free paraffin which they did during my pedicure. My nail tech name was Linh. (Pronounced Lynne) On the inside the place is very clean. They have disposable bags inside of the pedicure tubs, the tools were packaged, the towels even smelt clean when they were toweling off my legs and arms, and nail stations are very clean. Parking was not a problem either. They have a lot of parking around the building. Overall, my first experience being there was very good, I will probably return. read more

I used to love coming here to get my nails done, but then I went away for a year. I came back to get a fill on a set I already had while I was in town and was so disappointed, but this didn't stop me from going in two more times. After all that to disappoint me, to say the least i'm not coming back. The first time I came back I got a regular fill and they made my nails so bumpy and the gel polish streaky. The color I got was nothing like the sample color (samples could just be old, faded & dirty from long time use), but it wasn't even close. Still kept the color but when they cut down my nails they didn't even try fixing the shape and it just looked messy and uneven, very thick. The second time I came back I was trying to go for a light color and we changed the gel 4 times before settling for a peach that was ugly the more I looked at it (people weren't afraid to tell me that my nail color looked strange). The application of it all was a mess. Very streaky, had gel on my cuticles and around my fingers, very bumpy didn't really smooth out the gel powder to fill. Overall my nails looked bad, but from a distance it was okay. The third time i went in to just remove my nails because i was over getting them done and just wanted them off. Also, three of my nails had broken off within that week of having them (never happened before). Normally, you do a soak off right. No, she just ripped my nails off. It was painful. She took another acrylic nail and a cuticle cutter and shoved those in between the acrylic and my real nail literally RIPPING off the nail. She didn't even fully remove the glue before slapping a top coat over it. A part of my real thumb nail has been ripped off, because of the removal process and now I have a band aid on it from further ripping. My healthy nail beds aren't supposed to be bleeding upon removal and glued back on... i'm so upset i didn't have the same great experience this year with Nail Star, but I kept going back to give it another try. I won't be coming back here, because my nails still hurt from removal and when i went to my salon in DC they refused to do anything to my nails till it grew back a bit and didn't have a giant rip on the side of my nail. I should've spoke up more at the salon, but at that point I was in a bad mood and just wanted to leave. read more

I have never disliked a nail salon until now.. the service ruined everything for me. However, the job the tech did on the pedicure was just as bad. I tried this place upon moving closer to Western Branch, and will never return. The pedicure was rushed (I was the ONLY customer) and unprofessional. My toe nails were uneven with polish on my skin. The massage sucked. Thoroughly sucked. My calluses were not removed- which is the reason I get a pedi. I can paint my own nails so I expect at a minimum the calluses to be removed. The gel manicure was also rushed but turned out presentable after I had to ask the tech to fix my sloped nail... mistakes happen. I get it. The worst part was the service. I am a genuinely friendly person and everyone I encountered was stand offish. Never smiled, said "you're welcome" when thanked, or tried to make any small talk. One tech actually rolled his eyes when I tried making a joke.. yikes. I was very uncomfortable the entire time. I paid for the service, but now know to look somewhere else. read more

I'm pretty new to VA and this was the first salon I went to and my experience wasn't all the great. I got the shorter gentleman (can't remember his name) and my nails were terrible. I was so disappointed, I wanted to have them re done right after but we literally sat in there for 2 hours and my husband had fallen asleep waiting. Mind you, there was no wait at all. He was just that slow. That was 5 months ago, I went back in last week and my experience was better. My nails looked good but they still went pretty slow and I had 3 different technicians. One to soak off the set I came in with, one to apply and shape the acrylic and another to finish my nails up. The switching of people makes me nervous but all in all it was a good set. I started coming to Nail Star after my grandmother recommended this salon to me since I'm new to the area and finding a nail salon had proven tough. I'm so glad she did because Tina and Nicole are the best and really do a fantastic job with nails! Also, their pedicures here are nice too. They're thorough with their work and my nails always look nice and last a long time. I usually get the gel overlay with gel polish on top and I'm in and out in about 45mins. I definitely recommend this spot if you're looking for a nail salon! -------------- EDIT: Since my last review, I've decided to stop going to Star nails. Not because the service is bad or anyone is rude but for the fact that I'm charged an outrageous amount every time I go in and the strange part is that the cost varies from upwards to $30+ each visit! How?! I get the same thing EVERY TIME: Gel on my nails and their NuSkin(?) pedicure? I got this done once and the total was $75 (with gel on my toes, too), then, I come back, get the same thing done and the total was $110? That meant the the simple gel manicure cost more than the pedicure since the pedi was only $40. Anyway, this hasn't only happened once, they're never consistent in pricing, even by a few $$ so I'm just going to have to leave this place alone and go somewhere else because I like to know what I'm expected to pay each time and other nail salons provide that. read more

I've been to this shop many times and had stopped going for about a year and couldn't remember why until I went back right before Christmas. I walked-in and I got a fill-in with gel polish, simple French red tip and polish change on my toes. 1.5 days later my gel polish was lifting and off on some nails. I was on vacation and had to get this fixed on Christmas EVE! My polish also chipped on my toes after 3 days. Then I remembered, I stopped going here because at my sister's bachelorette party, 6 out of 10 gel polished nails peeled off, WHOLE! I went a whole 5 days with unpolished nails after spending good money. My polish also chipped on my toes after 3 days. On the day before I left for vacation I left my boots. I recently got back in town and called the salon after realizing it and they tossed them. I will NOT recommend this salon to anyone or come back to spend my money. Hit or miss. I have been here twice and the first time the technician did a fantastic job. He was a perfectionist and took his time, both my manicure and pedicure turned out perfect! The second time I came in left a lot to be desired. The lady acted like she was being inconvenienced. I upgraded my pedicure and really wish I didn't because the massage was awful! She dug her nails into my legs and it was so painful, I couldn't wait for it to be over. The paint on my toes is uneven in spots. With the manicure she rushed through cleaning up my nails and hardly took care of my cuticles so they look horrible. I chose a shellac nail polish and now 4 days later it is already starting to lift away from the nail! Shellac always lasts 2 to 3 weeks on my nails. Very disappointed since I paid so much money for a mediocre experience. Not sure I will be coming back. read more
