This salon is a convenient location to down-town, and I was able to walk in without an appointment and did not have to wait. They did charge $5 extra for OPI polish... but there were no other brands like Essie or CND on the polish cart so I had no option but to choose OPI and pay that extra fee. Most of the tools were taken from a new pack, though some tools did not appear to be sanitized which is not ideal. The salon was overall clean, but older so did not feel as spotless. I used to go to this salon a lot but for the past few months I've slowed down. About six months ago I got my nails done and they were uneven and the lady that did my nails made the side of my fingernail bleed and didn't care much at all. (Sorry I cannot find the pics for that right now.) Not only that but my sister also tagged along and they did the same thing to her also. Which the hand no reasoning too so that was uncalled for. Just a few days back I went there to get my eyebrows done. Now mind you for my eyebrows, I had stopped going here and I went to a salon on Avon. They're more expensive but it's worth it! But sadly a few days ago like I stated above...I went here to get my eyebrows waxed. To summarize it all they messed up my eyebrows really bad and had really bad customer service. They waxed, plucked, and trimmed way too much of my eyebrows off first off. One eyebrow had a big arch and the other one was still somewhat straight and thick. After asked her to fix it I got my other eyebrow ripped off. I noticed once the gap in the middle of my eyebrow was entirely too wide. It ended with 4-5 people rushing in there and talking really loud and doing entirely too much. Oh and also customers looking at my eyebrows and commenting about them not getting their eyebrows done here again. Cheaper isn't always better folks! Overall I suggest you NOT to go here. I don't like writing negative reviews--I just usually take my business elsewhere. BUT, this was so bad, I thought everyone would want to know. This place was terribly unprofessional--I had a 9:30 appt so I arrived about 9:20, and the workers arrived LATE at the salon at 9:40, kinda strolling in. I had specifically scheduled the first appt right at opening so I wouldn't have to wait because I had a very busy day, and I needed to be on time. But, ok, I rolled with that, and my pedi started about 9:45 after lights were turned on and everything was set up. And then, the pedi was just awful--somehow my plain (not gel or anything special) pedi was $62!! It was super short--no great massage, not at all relaxing, and the most expensive pedi I've ever had. I also observed the woman next to me who was not at all happy with her polish change. And--another two women who walked in, and were told they could have pedis waited for about 30 minutes, and when it was obvious they wouldn't be helped soon (because there were two others waiting all that time too, and only 3 workers!) they walked out. Oh, and when I asked for my 2 hour parking voucher--she said they hadn't offered that in a long time! This was a very bad experience! read more

Excellent service and great results. The technician spent a good amount of time on my pedicure and was carefully in cleaning and filing. The salon seemed clean. This place is an okay place to get your nails done at, if you're in a pinch or just happen to be in the vicinity. Some things to look out for: 1. None of the workers seems to speak English very well. Normally this wouldn't be a problem for me, but when you try to explain exactly what you want to them, they may not understand what you are saying. For two of the times I've come here, 2 separate technicians have not understood me when I said I wanted "square nails". Gets a little frustrating when you are as picky as I am with nails. 2. The skill of the techs isn't even. There is one lady who works there, I believe her name is Flora; she is the one that both speaks English the best and does nails the best. I am very pleased with how she did my shellac mani but I've had it done by other techs in the same salon with passable and mediocre results. Personally, I think the lady with the short hair is the most brusque one out of the bunch and her shellac mani was the worst. I would avoid if you can. 3. You can only tip in cash, and you get a 10% discount if you pay in cash or have a UVA student ID, but no combined discounts for both. This isn't so bad since there's an ATM right in the shop, with a 99 cent fee. In terms of quality of service and how "at ease" I feel with not having to monitor the tech doing my nails, I think I would prefer just going the extra distance to Lotus Nails & Spa, which is about an 8 minute drive from here and the service and quality is much, much better. However, it's a good place to stop if you are having a day in the Downtown Mall and want to get your nails done. Since it's across the street from me, you really can't get any better in terms of location. At the very least, it is very clean and they have relaxing ambient music on, so it is a good place to get something done if the mood randomly strikes you while you're in the neighborhood. read more

This place did a really bad job on my acrylics. I admit that I was with my friends, so I wasn't paying enough attention and could have corrected some of the mistakes, but ultimately they should have been able to do a better job without prodding. First of all, they didn't fully remove my black gel polish, so when they did the acrylic refill, you could still see bits of black all over all of my nails. I had chosen a light pink polish, so you could see it through the polish as well. Now the black polish is encased within the acrylic and won't come out. Additionally, the refill itself was thick and poorly done and started lifting soon after my appointment. Lastly, apparently they didn't buff my nails at all before putting on the gel polish, or they buffed them incorrectly or something because within a week of my appointment the gel started peeling up and came off in one piece from all of the nails over a few days. I came here because it was the only place I could get a quick appointment for three of us. Now I see why. Don't waste your money. read more

My friend and I stopped in for some pedicures. We were helped immediately, and the service was excellent. The staff was friendly, helpful, and engaged us in conversation, which seems to rarely happen in other places. I had a large, tender bruise on my calf, and without asking her my technician carefully avoided that area, which shows that they pay attention to their customers. I went here to get my acrylics done last week and got eyelash extensions as well. After I got my eyelash extensions, I got an eye infection. I had to go to the doctor and I am now taking antibiotics. The eyelash technician seem to be a new and my eyelash extensions were applied improperly, which caused my eye infection. I had scabs all over my eye and the extensions hurt! I soon got them taken off. The acrylics we are also applied improperly and fell off within a week. I will never go back here. read more

Used to always come here because it was downtown where I worked and have always loved the service. But recently I was told to pick a color from a side of the display because "it will last longer". I stated that I didn't want gel (the sign said $5 for gel). She told me twice that it wasn't gel just that it would last longer. The only difference was that it was OPI brand (what most salons carry). So when I paid and she charged me an additional $5 I was very annoyed. Located on the first floor of Water Street Garage, you can get two-hour parking validation (for no additional cost!) after your service. The equipments are fairly new, and I had numerous experiences with three different technicians there and they never failed me. Nice selection of OPI products and nail polishes also. They have an autoclave for their tools and it looks like they clean their pedi chairs/tubs fairly well. Of course they are not the most luxurious nail salon I have been to, but notice I said the best nail salon in town "for the price" :) Last time I was there, I got 20% off with a UVA student ID (October 2013) and the reasonable price became even cheaper. My sister-in-law and I came here as a part of a day trip to Charlottesville and man were we impressed! First of all it was rather early so we didn't have to wait at all to be seated, we were walk-ins. The space was clean, bright and played calming music. the stations and tools looked clean and sanitary. The lady that did my sister's nails was sweet, diligent, clean, speedy but did not rush the job. The gentleman that worked on me did and excellent and professional job, they obviously took pride in their work. After they completed our nails we felt pampered and pretty. I got a mani pedi while visiting for a little vacation and it was fantastic. The staff is really nice and the price is very reasonable. I splurged on the Spa pedicure and it was worth the extra $5 to get the hot towels and massage. So relaxing! The salon is very clean and they autoclave all of their tools. It's really disappointing when businesses think it's ok to put the burden of payment on their customers by night accepting cash. While an ATM is available in this salon, the 1.00 fee plus my bank fee increases the cost of me getting my nails done. Shame on you for not absorbing that cost and putting it on your customers. I'm sorry to write a negative review, but I was very disappointed with my experience at the Nail Capital. The technician seemed rushed, annoyed, and totally uninterested, even though the salon was not even busy, resulting in an extremely sloppy-looking shellac manicure. She did not file evenly and did not remove dead skin. She also did not apply any moisturizer, while my friends who were with me got the same manicure for the price and got lotion/massage. The quality was way too low for the price ($53 for shellac mani and pedi). I will definitely not return, and if I had any extra time as a new working mom, would go back to ask for a re-do. I got my nails done here a few weeks back and my pedicure still looks flawless it looks like I just got them done. They made my gel, full set look good but it great... they had a new lady do my nails which I do not prefer because I'm very very picky about my nails. I wanted coffin shaped nails and I'm very particular about the point it has to be very very skinny and it has to be filed really good swear it makes a perfect trapezoid type look at the top.. I had to keep asking her to file it more.. she acted as if she was scared to file my nails and I told her don't be afraid to use that file. LoL. My chair was comfortable I could've fallen asleep in that chair. Overall, this was a pretty good place to go get my nails done I'm impressed I recommend this place. read more

I was waiting for my mom to be finished with her hair appointment so I ran some errands then walked into this nail salon. I went there for the first time a few months ago and it was the worst nail salon I've ever been in. I was helped right away by a young teenage boy and asked for a manicure. He starts to cut my nails and asked about how he should cut them. I looked puzzled and told him to cut them short since they were already longer than I like them to be. HE FLATTENED MY NAILS COMPLETELY and then asked if I wanted to keep one of my nails longer than the other and I really got worried and told him no. He then starts to cut away the hang nails and cuticles and USED NO LOTION at all. Didn't even massage my hands nor the top part of my arms. As he paints my nails he applied the base layer, 2 thick coats of color, and the top coat. Wish I took a picture but my nails looked really bad and it took 5 hours to dry completely. Then 5 days later it started to flake off. I don't recommend this salon and I learned from this experience. Next time I'll just take my moms advice on where to go because she always knows of good places. read more

I hate to leave such a negative review, but I was extremely disappointed in the level of customer service at Nail Capital. I called and made an appointment for 6pm, I gave my name, told them I wanted a mani/pedi, and they confirmed my appointment. I live west of town and had a bunch of errands to do in town and anticipated I'd be done around 6...miracle of Charlottesville miracles, I finished my errands early (!) and got dropped off at the address linked to by their webpage around 5. I guess I shouldn't have trusted my smartphone, as 216 Water Street is apparently a radio station! Though I love NPR, I don't think Terry Gross would have done a very good job on my nails. Since I was lost, I called the nail salon and they were unable to give me directions or even tell me where they were located, and they were extremely rude over the phone. When I finally found them, it was around 5:30. I walked in and the three nail techs were busy with customers. No one even acknowledged that I had walked in. When I finally caught their attention, I said "I know I'm early for my 6pm appointment, but I was hoping maybe you could fit me in earlier?". No one even answered me, so I said "I see you're busy, though, when should I come back?" the three nail techs looked at each other, and one of them said "You have to come back tomorrow" and I said, "Well, I have an appointment in half an hour, I'll just come back then?" and she said "No, there are no appointments. You do not have an appointment. Come back tomorrow". No one asked my name, no one stopped what they were doing to check the appointment book, they rudely just told me to come back tomorrow. I certainly understand that they were all helping customers, but I'm a customer too, or I would have been... and well, I'm not going to come back tomorrow, I'm not ever going to come back. My friend and I came here for pedis and it was very nice. My feet had gotten rough over the summer from sandal wear and they made them feel and look great. Wonderful massage chairs, nice soak, gentle treatment, and a great polish. Nice and courteous staff and speedy service. Never in my life would give one star but simply bc of the most rude customer service I've ever had, it's my first. I typically wouldn't go anywhere but my go to place but I was in a jam. So since I own a business downtown I thought I'd give it a shot. From the moment I walked in I felt like I was a bother to the staff. Like I was bugging them for coming in and spending money. My nail lady Nichole seemed so annoyed that she actually had to work. Not to mention I made an apt so they knew I was coming. I asked about polish that would match both my pedicure and my shellac manicure. Once again she's bothered by this. On to the pedicure... I ask if she can use the razor bc I run so I have calluses. She explains that to use the razor it will be 5$ more. I thought she was joking. Clearly not. I've been to probably 50 places over the years and never have I been charged to remove the skin. Sorry isn't that the point of a pedicure? She tells me no. From there on it was nothing but her being very aggressive with my feet. Literally scrubbing so hard and for sure on purpose. I mean come on guys. It's your job. Never in a million years would I return to this overpriced ridiculously rude salon! Save your money go to see Nanda at Nanda nails in York place if you want to get your nails done downtown. This place is a joke! I do not recommend this place at all!! I had a terrible experience. I made an appointment a week in advance for a pedicure and was kept waiting 45 minutes and that was with an appointment!! They are rude they talk badly about the customers but speak in a language we can't understand. The place is filthy. I ended up drying my feet off because the water was ice cold after soaking for so long waiting for my pedicure. I left with out having one!! It was truly upsetting.
