This is a very good rental on a unique property in a well situated location - and if you don't know this part of the island, then you should be pleasantly surprised by the convenience that Nahiku offers. We were here in July of 2015 and realized that we were in just the right spot to explore the entire East Shore, which allowed us to back track the Hana Highway, hop all around town, go to the National Park (don't miss the hike to Waimoku Falls) and visit all the places in the area, then head around the back of the island when we left - fantastic drive!
The cottage itself is nearly perfect, but better after the rainy months so that the stream and waterfall are full. The bathroom is terrific - spacious and picturesque - and the big lanai offers wonderful views, day and night; romantic moonlight and star gazing are particularly tranquil. We got confused trying to work the barbecue, there was no laundry access when we were there, and an extra floor mat by the tub/shower would have been helpful, but everything else was fine; the kitchen was excellent, the bedroom was lovely, and the bed was very comfortable. Do be aware that life on this side of Maui is well to be considered, because the typically wasteful ways of the mainland have no place here - this is the tropics, there are insects, and water is precious. "Special" definitely describes both the cottage and the owner, who seems to be a very kind, patient, and hospitable person.
This property has a lot to offer. The flower farm is right next door and quite pristine, the Nahiku Marketplace is a nearby oasis, and Hana Town is just a few minutes past there; we can't imagine anyone spending just one day on this slice of paradise. Perhaps the best part is that travelers needn't be concerned about making all the stops along the drive here, because this rental offers the opportunity to meander at a relaxed pace in both directions along the Road to Hana in order to spend time wherever strikes their fancy.
Ke'anae is not too far, Pua'a Ka'a is nearby, and it's pretty close to the roads that go to the Lava Tube, Kahanu - with the National Garden and the Heiau - the other Botanical Gardens, and Waianapanapa. We also found that the Garden of Eden, Ching's Pond, Honomanu Bay, Waikani, and many other waterfalls were all part of day trips from Nahiku. This is a magnificent part of the island that folks should really take the time to experience, especially since Koki and Hamoa Beaches are over here, and this cottage makes it easy to do! read more
