She's a young college student trying to navigate her way through life. Her braiding skills are priceless. I'm happy to have found her.

I hadn't done anything to my hair in about 2 plus years and let my gray roots come in. My hubby is…read moreretiring soon (he's my silver haired fox) so I decided to finally embrace my gray, too. The hair that Adriana had to deal with was "virgin" hair untouched by processing but very fine. I don't know anything about balayage (and that it works from the tips to the root, not vice-versa) so she helpfully showed me a few pics of gray highlighting and we were set to go. I love the ambience there; very chillax. This happened right between Thanksgiving and Christmas and you get burnt out on all the bouncy music everywhere you go. Luckily, I picked a very quiet establishment with just soft jazzy versions of the holiday stuff. The many live plants as decor really adds to the spa vibe. Make sure you keep your voices low so as not to disturb other patrons, many of whom are fellow Asians like me. I read on their website about the "Head Spa" that they do, which is kind of a 20/40/60 minute facial but for your scalp. Those chairs are so comfy you will, if you're not careful, fall asleep. Every major service (cut and highlights for me) will include a scalp massage. They block out the overhead lights and you feel like you're floating lying down. I might come back regularly for this alone. I recommend this place for people who have stress headaches. They say they use pure jojoba and help exfoliate your scalp. The total for a long hair cut was $94 and the cost of highlights was $325. You put down $100 deposit with your credit card when you make the appointment and they don't cash it until your service is complete. Make sure you're on time or early (I suggest at least 15 mins) or you will be charged 100% penalty. Parking is limited to behind Lake Ave in "Shoppers Lane." If they run out of spots you can also park at the Trader Joe's (west side of Lake) and just buy something there so you can get validated. It was pricey but well worth it. My stylist advised that I come in every few months for toner rinse to keep the highlights bright since the gray will just come in naturally after that. Don't be afraid to do it! Ask for Adriana.

I had straight across bangs when I walked in so it's not like I don't like bangs on me. They just look like I cut them myself & messed up LOL but I styled them myself just now & it's a little better. . I had such a great experience with Reyka last time so I'm quite disappointed in my experience this time with Yuri. She was very kind but I don't think she asked enough questions throughout the process to know what I wanted. I know it's hard to get 100% exactly what you want unless the stylist can read your mind so I really don't mind it looking a little different. But, the photo I took as soon as I got in the car shows how she sent my bangs out the door... which... I have textured hair but I look like I got smacked by a tornado It was $120 for this :( I drove out from west LA because I really trusted this salon but I think... it's time to find a different one or try Reyka again :(

I booked an "Occasion Styling" appointment ($120) with Marie Kazarian for my Senior Prom after being recommended by a friend who had a positive experience at the salon for the same service. Two days before my appointment, Marie texted asking for photos of the styles I wanted. I sent two options, and she assured me she could do both. When I arrived, she asked to see my Prom dress and suggested we go with an updo instead of a half-up, half-down style. From the start, the appointment felt unprofessional. She didn't ask any questions about my hair type, texture, or how it holds style. She began curling my hair with a large-barrel curling iron but used no heat protectant or styling products. The curls fell out within minutes. When attempting the updo, it quickly became clear she didn't have a plan. The result was a stiff, messy bun with random pieces pinned awkwardly--completely different from what I had shown her. After two failed attempts, I asked her to switch to a half-up, half-down style, hoping it would be easier. At that point, I felt frustrated because I shouldn't have to lower my expectations when I'm paying for a specific look. Unfortunately, the second attempt was no better. She pulled my hair into an uneven ponytail with no teasing, shaping, or effort to match the reference photos. I became so upset that I started crying and texted my mom, who was sitting across the salon. My mom ended up stepping in to help guide Marie because it was clear she didn't know how to execute the style. The entire experience was incredibly upsetting. I spent the rest of the appointment in tears, and despite other stylists clearly seeing how distressed I was, as I made eye contact with various of them, no one offered assistance. When Marie's next client arrived, I had to leave with my hair unfinished and poorly styled. What stood out the most was how completely unapologetic Marie was throughout the entire appointment. At no point did she acknowledge that things were going wrong, offer a solution, or show any concern for how upset I was. Instead, she dismissed the situation by saying, "It's going to look better when you have your dress and makeup on," which only made things worse. I ended up going home and having to completely redo my own hair for Prom after paying $120 for a professional service. That alone says everything. I left the salon having paid for a hairstyle that looked nothing like what I requested and for one of the worst service experiences I've ever had. Marie came across as unprepared, inattentive, and completely unconcerned with client satisfaction. DO NOT BOOK WITH MARIE KAZARIAN!

In the past forty years I have only found two barbers/stylists that can cut my mop into something that is actually flattering (rather than making me look like a rodeo clown or a Italian mobster). One is no longer cutting hair since he was offered an executive position running a large styling products company (that shall remain nameless), and the other is Jessica. I found her at her last job about four years ago, but they were rather expensive and overly formal. I followed her to Salon Royal and it is a good match for her - casual, comfortable and very friendly. And I love the owner - she's a peach! I do not recommend you rely on a credit card - bring cash or a check. As with most small business they are struggling with the draconian rules of the credit card companies and it's just simpler to bring cash. I routinely bring by wife and baby in while I get the mop chopped. We drive over 20 miles because I will not risk my marriage over a bad haircut. Seriously - she's the best and Salon Royal is awesome. Period.

I had been going to a stylist in Sierra Madre for several years and the service was a good, but really expensive. Jessica is very professional, timely and creative. She always has a new idea for me. She'll remind you via a text when it's time to get a haircut, etc. (which has been great for both my husband and me). I can easily text her and get a response and appointment. For those who work, she'll meet you in the evening or on the weekends. This is a well kept secret ladies!
