I spent the first 40 years of my life basically eating whatever, exercising when I wanted to, but not really knowing what to do at the gym. I mostly just made excuses. Besides, the gym was boring. I had worked with personal trainers, and grew to loathe my training sessions. We would go through the same basic routine, and my fitness rarely improved.
About 16 months ago, I was discouraged and about to give up on another gym experience, when my friend convinced me to come out for a group MyBootcamp session. I was shocked when I didn't hate it. I decided to start working out with Grant Hill, as my friends spoke glowingly of his training. I showed up that first day with limited expectations. After all, I had been through multiple trainers at multiple gyms, and basically was still overweight, out of shape, and lacking knowledge as to why. Most concerning looking back, was my resignation that it didn't matter what I did.
Grant provided a fresh perspective on things. His workouts were outdoors, away from the dreariness of the gym. His exercises were fresh, and new to me. And the session was not tied to a clock, but rather he pushed me as hard as he thought he needed to. He had not worked with me much before telling me I needed to change my eating habits if I were ever going to see any progress. I was initially dismissive. I gathered some of the reading he asked me to read, and figured I would eventually get to it. He followed up, and would just talk a little about nutrition during our workouts. I slowly adopted some of the things he suggested, and started reading the book as he had requested. Results started appearing. Since then, I have interspersed group workouts with personal training sessions.
While I have not fully embraced the dietary change, I try to pay attention to what I eat 80% of the time(it's probably closer to 60%). Nor have I become a workout warrior, where I exercise every day. I try and get a good workout in twice a week. But since I have started, I have lost about 3 inches off my waist, and am in substantially better condition. I even ran a 5 mile race for charity a few months ago at a 9 minute mile pace. I am much more educated about my health, and why I was never seeing progress before.
I believe that each person needs to find what works for them, and Grant Hill absolutely helped me find a healthier path that works for me. I would encourage anyone to try working out with him, or one of his colleagues at MyBootcamp. The group sessions are great too, with supportive and fun people. Being outdoors(even during winter) is so much more enjoyable than being inside, it makes the whole experience better. read more
