All paths literally lead to the Crossroads as the best place for a fish fry. We showed up a bit early just in case and we were not disappointed! Ashley took great care of us, quickly got us drinks while we pored over the menu. I couldn't decide, as there were many fish entrees to select. Lucky me, the Fisherman's Platter features all of them! That's what we each ordered, though we differed completely on the sides. The food came quickly. The size of the portions crowded the table (good thing it was just two of us at a four top). Every item tasted so good and we had trouble finishing. Talk about fat, dumb and happy; I may wear sweatpants the next time we order this! The other thing I want to mention is that Crosswords is keepin' it fresh in so many ways. Ashley had some new tech that used the Toast app to check us out right at the table. I also saw a new weeknights daily special menu posted at Facebook. Good things are happening at Crossroads but you gotta get here to see them. And soon, because Fish Fry season doesn't last forever!

The tomato soup was chunky and sour, the vegetables in our salads were frozen. My fish sandwich was so fried there was hardly any fish left inside the breading. The home made chips were way under fried to some being almost raw. The children's chicken tender plate had one chicken tender, again so deeply fried there was hardly any chicken left . The Mac and cheese grilled cheese sandwich was tasty. Maybe they were just having a bad day or had a new cook but the food was sub par that day.

We rarely sit outside but this patio beckoned and we were helpless to resist. There's even outdoor seating available if you arrive before the restaurant is open! Silas brought us menus and took drink orders right away. We enjoyed the season's first shandies while exploring the menu. His attention was perfect and we shared some laughs each time he returned to our table. Neither one of us wanted to share (I guess) so we each ordered our own appetizers. I can never get enough smoked whitefish spread... until it's ALL MINE! I enjoyed every bite and would do it again. Patrick ordered the walleye strips and he did offer me a bite (generous devil that he is). They were perfectly crisp without being heavy or greasy. If I had known that... nah, I'd still get the whitefish. We'll be back to visit The Portside and try more menu items. Who knows, maybe we'll split something next time?

Their use of the term 'transparency fund' is an oxymoron, because you don't see it coming. In a response to another review I left, the owner claims there are notices posted in multiple places, however, we never saw any of them. Besides, how many people search for notices of hidden fees when going out for a relaxing, late lunch? Shame on the owners for squeezing every penny they can get out of their customers. We almost deducted the fee from our servers tip, but recognized that would not have been fair to him. By the way, Sean, our server, is an asset to this business.

We started with clothesline candied bacon as an appetizer , a beet salad and the chophouse salad that features a vinaigrette and apples. The beet salad was not really good.
