Our favorite place to get sushi in the SFV. I love that it's authentic and offers much more than salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and albacore. I love their amberjack, black snapper, and Spanish mackerel!!! Another dish that I've enjoyed multiple times is the beef sukiyaki. It takes me back to my trip to Japan. Parking is small and very limited in the lot, but there is street parking nearby. Second course: salmon sushi and fresh water eel sushi: good sushi than most of the sushi place Toro and uni sushi: to be honest, I tried a lot of different restaurants in LA and they got the best uni sushi even I tried fresh uni from Alaska. What a wonderful sushi setup in Chatsworth. We celebrated a birthday here tonight, and this was one of the few places that could host a larger party (8). The staff was attentive and quick at getting our order and at serving the food from the sushi bar & kitchen. We sampled many dishes, with starters like soft shell crab (lightly battered and fried), shishito peppers, and tempura shrimp along with some salads (very good ginger/sesame dressing). The fish was fresh, with the yellowtail and hotate/scallops being real standouts. The rolls were nicely wrapped and hit the spot for our guests that weren't in the mood for raw fish. The location is tucked away in a corner strip mall, and the parking is tight, but don't let that deter you...this is a top notch restaurant. read more

This place is over priced for the quality, as you walk in you get slapped with super fishy smell. I wasn't a fan of how fishy it smelled. The hand rolls I had were okay I've had better. The plates my family ordered were missing sushi that were supposed to be on the plate and they had to bring them after because they forgot to add them so that was a little annoying. I'd been here more than a handful of times. The place is small and always crowded so I usually ordered Togo. As far as the food, I will say the quality is great, 5 stars. I can't give 5 stars though because the food always takes forever when calling Togo. They always give at least 30min to pick up and then another at least 45 when you come to pick it up. I understand that they are always busy but waiting EVERY single time we put in an order is not reasonable. I will always appreciate the quality here but just know you'll have to wait a bit when ordering. read more

I live around the corner and called in my order for pick up. Due to my busy schedule I decided to take my dog for a walk and pay for the to go order. I arrived at the register, mindful of staying behind the partition separating the sushi bar and register. I also waited outside until they let me know it was ready. The rude older lady saw that I came in with my puppy on leash, allowed me to pay as she hovered over the younger waitress who assisted my transaction, deliberately waiting for me to pay, and only then to told me no dogs allowed. We were in there just about a minute maximum, while I paid. I said to her, I really wish you would've told me before I paid so I could've taken my dog home instead immediately. I was absconded and lectured, feeling quite embarrassed and left in a particular way. I canceled my order and decided to never return. My dog is my child and anyone who can't tolerate him, while I pay a to go order, esp given the steep price for a simple hand roll, doesn't deserve my money or time. It's such a shame it seems like they did it deviously, making sure I paid big $$ before making it a point to only notify me after. Very unprofessional. We received a gift card to this sushi bar. We tried to call ahead to place and order but no one answered either phone number we were able to locate. Upon arriving at the restaurant, they had a sign posted that they don't accept their own gift cards anymore due to a card scanner issue??? What??? Anyways the Japanese Scallop sushi was spectacular, texture is buttery with a hint of Yuzu (citrusy sauce). Omakase experience was fair because the chef was so busy that the fish cut looked messy and ugly. I would come back during weekdays to avoid the crowd and to have a no rush dining experience. This is one of the best sushi spots in the Valley/Porter Ranch area! Its definitely higher quality sushi than the local AYCE. My husband and i normally get the chirashi bowl with an order of soft crab roll. The portions are generous and everything i've tried is absolutely delicious! It is def not an "all you can eat" experience. The beer selection is basic, but the Sakhi selection is above average. Service: The server was very prompt and attentive to our needs. He was also very knowledgable about the questions that we had. The waiter also gave us excellent recommendations, which was much appreciated. Location: It is small, and the lighting did feel a bit to dim, but that is what adds to the experience. It feels like an intent experience. I came to Mutsumi with some friends to check this spot out for the first time and just wow! We had a bunch of nigiri, salmon, yellowtail, ikura, scallop and sweet shrimp. The live sweet shrimp was fire , and the live scallop was both delicious and presented beautifully. Even the simple salmon nigiri felt like something special compared to other sushi places. The food, on the most part is still prepared the same as when this place was Omino's. Mutsumi owners must realize that this is a locals restaurant, which means people that frequent this place have been coming for a long time, back when Ominosan and Yoshika were feeding us. This means, we have a certain way about the experience and certainly particular about the food and service. Waiting 10-20 minutes in between sushi orders because your cook is preparing take out orders first, is NOT part of a positive experience. In fact, the wait in between food, the lack of listening to the orders, and arguing whether or not there is enough of something added to the food, (which should be something I dictate not anyone else), is enough not to come back.... People are not coming to this place because it's Mutsumi. They come because it WAS Omino's and still expect that same experience. We are always on the constant search for a good sushi alternative in Northridge since Katsuya is almost always busy. We decided to try this place out. This is for 2 people on a Saturday night! Quite surprisingly, it wasn't busy! Please note this is strictly a review of their SUSHI ONLY. Food: The presentation was BEAUTIFUL. I like that there was wasabi inside the sushi. Not all sushi restaurants do that. However, the turn out wasn't good. We ordered spanish mackerel, albacore, tuna, and salmon - ALL of them had TOO MUCH WASABI, unfortunately. The thing about putting wasabi in sushi is you have to carefully put in the right amount otherwise it becomes to POWERFUL that it will weaken the taste of fish. That happened to all of our sushi. Price: PRICEY. The bill came to about $80+ which is about normal if you are in Encino/Ventura area but the food was not as good as its competitors so imma say its not worth the penny. Parking: AMPLE. It is located in a small plaza in Chatsworth. You can EASILY MISS it if you are not familiar in this area. But its FREE. Service: This one is a little ODD. We were greeted at the door and got seated at the bar. The chefs were VERY FRIENDLY. We even had the chance to talk to them since it wasn't busy when we came. However, during the course of the meal, I noticed that we didn't have enough napkins in our table and our water cups were NOT ALWAYS filled. It was pretty odd for a slow Saturday. We only saw the servers probably TWICE - when they asked for our drinks and when they gave our check. Atmosphere: This is only a personal preference but I'm NEVER A FAN of white table mats because it gives me an impression that they should be replaced every meal like the fancier restaurants. This is not the case for this restaurant. It probably can use a little bit MORE LIGHTING and DECOR in the dining area. It just looks a little PLAIN. Overall, I'm glad there is a decent sushi restaurant in this corner of the Valley but I probably WON'T GO BACK again. Sushi competition in Valley is so HIGH that you have to atleast match the quality with the price of the food. Mutsumi is leaning more towards to the PRICEY-JUST-OKAY sushi kind. read more
