This restaurant has the atmosphere and menu of an authentic Japanese restaurant, which initially gave me high expectations. Unfortunately, while the food was prepared traditionally, the overall execution was just average. The salad was heavily dressed, which overpowered the fresh ingredients. The aji nigiri lacked the delicate flavor and freshness I usually expect from quality Japanese sushi. The tempura was also disappointing, as it wasn't light and crispy the way authentic Japanese restaurants typically serve it. Most of the dishes were simply okay, and the steak was noticeably tough and difficult to chew. What stood out most was the service. The staff was attentive, professional, and genuinely welcoming throughout the meal. Their excellent hospitality made the dining experience more enjoyable despite the food falling short of expectations. We have been a patron of Mutsumi for years since they took over ownership of Omino sushi. The chefs are still the same ones that worked at Omino so you know they are top quality. Mutsumi is Japanese owned and only hires Japanese sushi chefs which is really nice. Now, let's talk about the important stuff: fish quality. Mutsumi has some of the freshest sashimi that I've ever tasted! Everything is top quality including their tempura. Tempura is light and flaky as it should be. Still one of my faves after all these years! Location 4: Chatsworth California, off of Devonshire and DeSoto, in a small strip mall. Limited parking on the lot but you can park on the street as well. Venue 4: Typical San Fernando valley mom and pop sushi establishment with a sushi bar and a handful of tables. No outdoor seating. Service 4: Always friendly, polite and attentive. Many of the servers have been there for the last several years. Drinks 4: Beer on tap and bottles, wine, sake, tea and soft drinks. Sapporo on tap is pretty solid and their sake list is pretty good. Food 4: Fresh, high quality fish prepared and served by experienced chefs that have been with the restaurant for many years. I've been going there for over 20 years and most of the chefs there date back to those days! Solid menu of sushi, sashimi, rolls and Japanese dishes. It's been a while, since I last visited Mutsumi, so it was time to pay it another visit. Located in a corner of a very small strip mall, with congested parking, the sushi spot still commands a loyal following. It is a cozy place that has a small sit down sushi counter (3 sushi chefs, at that) and few tables in a compact dining space. Therefore, not surprising that this place gets full fast and you may have to wait for a spot, even though you have a reservation. I was dining solo and waited about 10 minutes for my corner table. Started with my favorite here, the Baked Oyster Dynamite. It lived up to my past memories. For the main, my selection was the Sashimi Dinner Combo. It comes with Tuna, Yellow Tail, Amber Jack Scallop, Salmon and Sweet Shrimp. The raw seafood was fresh and tender. This dish includes steam rice and miso soup, which was served hot and flavorful, with sea weed and small cubes of tofu. A salad was also included. Disappointingly, it only contained lettuce and arrived fully doused with thousand island dressing. I had to send it back and ask for another try, this time with the lettuce and dressing separated. Furthermore, why not a Japanese or ginger dressing to jive with the restaurant? Service was attentive, timely, caring and delivered in a professional manner. read more

Used to go there before they sold it when it was called OMINO then stopped for a long time. A few weeks ago we decided to try again to the new ownership and to say we were so pleased with the service and quality of product we had. I will never be going back I hope the owner in Japan watching the cameras wise up. Ken is not like the Japanese people I have meet. I just started a new position at a nearby law office and was looking for places to eat. I came across their menu and was encouraged to see they had sukiyaki on the dinner menu. Unfortunately, I didn't envision myself eating dinner there, but I went for lunch and asked if they were actually serving it at dinner. Unfortunately, it appears they don't. I've been searching for a Japanese restaurant that serves it, with no avail. :-( Nevertheless, I did eat lunch there and it was magnificent. My wife is Nihonjin (Sansei, actually) and she's trained me well in what good sushi and Japanese food is. I had their lunch special and was surprised to have it start with a small dish of Sunomono accompanying the Miso soup. The main dish was a nice salad, a handful of bean sprouts, half a dozen green beans covered in sesame seeds, two pieces of Tempura shrimp, several pieces of Tempura vegetables, and four pieces of Spicy Tuna Roll. There was also a nice big bowl of gohan (rice). I finished everything, even though my 78 year old hands are now having trouble with hashi. For my money, the service was excellent, the food was delicious, and the portions were just right. Next time I will have some Toro and Hamachi to really experience the quality of their fish. There will definitely be a next (and probably a next and another next) time. read more

The quality of fish here is amazing. It's been a while since I dined here. I came to dinner with my sister and cousins and had a lovely time. Great service and great sushi. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. The sea trout was amazing, the scallops melt in your mouth. The yellowtail hand roll stole my heart and the crispy rice tuna was addictingly good. The ambiance is ok, dated restaurant with old furniture but who cares I'm here for the sushi. It's clean and organized. If you are looking for amazing sushi look no further. I will not tolerate rude service. This place had my heart being the only spot in this part of town that had decent Omakase. But there always was this guy rocking the man-bun who serves customer service with contempt and annoyance. Today was the final straw, I will not be lectured to. You work in the customer service business, it is your job to serve. I also used to work in the biz, so I'm calling you out. It is the same snide isolationist racist behavior I witnessed from a few folks while living in Tokyo for a year. I will no longer support your business nor recommend your restaurant. One of my most favorite sushi spots ever now. Sad that I moved away from the area, but when I visit, this place comes first! Such quality sushi here, can get pricy, but it's well worth it. The first time I came here I had the best experience, but the second time and third time (both within a week) I will say I was disappointed because they ran out of the sweet shrimp and had served me salmon sushi when I specifically ordered salmon belly , both times that I came. Other than the above, everything else was satisfying. My favorite roll here is the creamy salmon, it is delicious! The spicy scallop roll is good too. A real authentic sushi restaurant! All my favorites are fresh and perfectly prepared (Salmon Nigri, salmon roe, yellowtail, tuna), but the real gem of this place is in their rotating specials. Every time I come, they've got something new and delicious on the specials board. Today we had live scallop, which was just so light and fresh, and the sweet live shrimp was as delicious as it was gorgeous! So happy we found this sushi bar in the valley. We love sitting at the sushi bar. We used to drive all the way to downtown LA. We love sitting at the sushi bar and seeing everything in action. All the sushi is so fresh and all the cuts are very generous. It gets really busy so we go at 5:00 when it opens. Also we can take advantage of the happy hour, 50% off alcohol. Can't beat that! I just found this place today and I am happy. This is a real Japanese Sushi Bar/Restaurant and not a Sports Bar, thank goodness! Many of the names of dishes and fish I only know in Japanese so we were very happy to see everyone behind the bar was Japanese but of course they also spoke English. They had many fish that other Sushi bars don't offer. Everything was fresh and of excellent quality. It is clean, quiet and nice. The service was excellent, attentive and polite. We had a wonderful lunch and were able to have a nice conversation at the same time. It was so good that we just kept eating but the bill was still reasonable. This is definitely my new go to Sushi Bar in the West Valley. I recommend them highly and wish them success. read more

I had the opportunity to take my mom to Mutsumi last Sunday, as it's a local place that I enjoy, and the service and food were excellent as usual! The restaurant had a cozy ambiance when we walked in and the hostess sat us immediately, as a server came up to take our drink orders. They provided us with some menus and some time to decide what we wanted. As everything looked good, we were a little stumped with what to go with first. The hostess gave us some great recommendations, and we got to try some new things this time. Of particular excellence were the Cajun Deluxe Roll, Ahi, and King Mackerel. I loved the plating of each, with the added garnishes and toppings that gave every roll a little kick! The server was even helpful in pointing out which rolls already had soy sauce and/or wasabi and which rolls to dip ourselves. But even the simpler cuts such as the Salmon and Cajun Albacore had a lot of flavor packed into them. I could tell that the chefs took their time picking the best cuts and preparation. We finished the night off with some tempura ice cream, which was an "eyes-bigger-than-my-stomach" choice for sure, but still quite delicious! I'm glad to have gotten such a great dinner with my mom, and would definitely come back with friends, dates, etc. It's a decently-sized restaurant that's in an unassuming intersection which is perfect if I want to avoid larger crowds or traffic. read more

We try various restaurants around the valley This is one of the consistently fresh sushi restaurants and sushi and rolls are never "fishy" but very fresh. My son treated me to dinner at Mutsumi this past weekend and I was blown away! I love sushi, but I am very picky. I usually avoid nigiri because I prefer the rolls. I used to think that nigiri was flavorless. Not here! I selected a few rolls (Cajun Deluxe Roll and Chatsworth Roll were my favorites) and my son chose some nigiri. Then, my son suggested were share everything. I was not looking forward to the nigiri, but like I said, I was blown away. The sushi chefs at Mutsumi packed so much flavor into their nigiri sushi. I found myself analyzing the tastes as if I was making a judgment on a fine glass of wine. The flavors were so distinct and delicious. We ate past the point of fullness because the food was so good. We topped our meal off with some delicious tempura ice cream. It was a perfect meal! The parking was plentiful even though this gem of a restaurant was tucked away in a strip mall. The hostess and waitress were so amazing as well. The waitress was there when needed and kept my glass of iced green tea full. She also offered some great suggestions on what to order. Even though she made herself available, she did not hover. I like that. The restaurant was well lit and I was able to clearly see the beautiful food (as evidenced in the photos attached). I love that even though there were many other patrons, I was still able to carry on a conversation and hear my son. I am older and really hate going to restaurants where I can't hear my companions. I loved being able to enjoy both delicious food and great conversation. I look forward to future meals at Mutsumi. read more

Manager has an attitude spits on the food while talking. He has no respect whatsoever towards customers.

Insanely bad management to the point I will never come here again. The sushi is pretty good, could be more consistent as some days have bad quality, but overall ok. The issue lies in the owner, manager, and customer service. I've been a frequent customer for about a year now and always have 100-300 dollar tabs. There's 2 events that have ruined this place. 1) i went out with my family for a birthday dinner. We ordered a ton of stuff, including an order of unagi. An hour and a half later, after ordering even more sushi, we realized we never got the unagi. After several times telling multiple waiters we never got it, it was always an "I'll check on it" "it's coming". Ultimately, our original server comes to us and asks what the issue is. We tell him we never got our one order of unagi and have been waiting for an hour. The waiter starts to argue with us saying he brought out the sushi and that we're lying, insisting that he brought it out earlier. They end up remaking it for us. All is well right? NO. We get our bill and they double charged us for unagi. Thinking it's a mistake I call over the waiter to say there was a mistake on the bill, the waiter flat out goes "yeah the manager said to charge you twice because we remade it for you even though I know I brought it out". WTF? Who does that? And who remakes a plate if you're planning on charging double without notifying the customer??? It became a WHOLE ORDEAL with the staff, all waiters getting involved. It was a 210 dollar tab and creating a scene over 7 dollar sushi for customers that come every week?? And who argues with a customer whether or not you brought out a plate? Terrible terrible management and is extremely insulting to think we would lie about a 7 dollar order after ordering hundreds of dollars. 2) My son recently went regardless of the bad experience. Left a 10% tip and they pull him aside to say the manager has been tracking his tips the last few times he has come to eat. They said if he doesn't tip more then he can't be served and essentially banned. Looking at other reviews, others were double charged and had issues with the service.
