Decided to walk to this restaurant for lunch since our room was not ready at the RIU Plaza Espana. A great place to sample Jamon Serrano Ham as well as other items such as Croquettes,sandwiches and local beer. There are counters in front for informal dining as well as tables to enjoy a sit down meal. Many locals came in to purchase ham to go. A must when visiting Madrid. A casual bar setting to enjoy a beer or cafe con leche and "bocadillo de Jamón" (cured ham sandwich) as called in Spain. There are several locations but this one is our family favorite. Soo much that it has become a tradition to visit on every trip. Impressive to see the deli where all the variety of cured hams are exhibited. Definitely recommend to visit in the mornings where lots of locals drop by for a quick cup of coffee or a pint of beer. This restaurant is over rated and I knew that but had to try it. I have been going to Madrid lots of times in many years. But my first experience eating in this joint. I took some friends who have never been to Madrid before and thought it will be an experience for them because they were so facinated with all those hanging ham legs. The ambiance was great. The service was not good, too many tourists like me and so few servers. We waited to be served and our food came really fast but i had asked for an extra fork, and never saw that server again. My wife and I were on vacation from the United States to Madrid and this place was near our hotel. There are huge slabs of ham lining the wall. So awesome. Museo del Jamón is on our to do list in Madrid when we planned our travel but it was an unpleasant experience. It was not that crowded and busy but no waiters tried to clean up tables for next group. You would see people just moved all leftovers from other customers to another tables and it was really disgusting that there were some tables full with leftovers and non-cleaning dishes. We ended up eating by the bar. They served a huge variety of Jamón like a museum and it was difficult to make decisions since we were not professional with Jamon. We ordered the Jamón Iberico de Bellota which was recommended by the staff with highest price among all selection. It's a good happy hour spot, sipping alcohol while snacking on some Jamon. They serve different varieties of jamon, ranging from super cheap to mad expensive (thousands of dollars per kg). I highly suggest their Jamon Iberico de Bellota - Cured Ham from acorn-fed black iberian pigs. I've had Jamon Iberico de Bellota in other places, but this one def takes the cake. This was the first restaurant we ate at in Madrid and what a great introductory to Spain! It was super packed on a Friday night. We were lucky enough to get seated at a table when we got there. Service wasn't great, we didn't get bread like the other tables. Might be because we are clearly tourists. Also the waiter never came back with our check even though we could see him going to other tables and taking care of them. Besides the horrible service, the good was pretty good! The platters were such a great value at $7.80 euro for a large pork chop and steak. Some of the people we were with in Spain really wanted to try this place but I'll be honest I wasn't too interested in Iberian ham after trying some elsewhere but we decided to go anyway, they have other options such as chicken, seafood and beef, the ambiance is nice, upstairs has a deli looking area where you can buy whole pig legs or other cuts of meat, downstairs there is restaurant seating, one small thing but cool is they do have a chair lift for the stairs so those who have a hard time with the stairs have a great option. I had the sangria here and enjoyed it, for food we ordered the croquettes and the batata bravas, the croquettes were good but I was not a fan of the batata bravas, the sauce was thick and overpowering, we ordered half roasted chicken which came with fries, we enjoyed it, my fellow guests tried the slices of ham and enjoyed it, this place is interesting and I recommend it for those who want to try iberian ham, even though it's served nearly everywhere this I imagine has as many options as you can get. read more

This place is awesome either way, and with every drink which I suggested you order your drink like local, house beer is called a cava an it is only $1 per glass, and red wine vino tinto $1 per glass.
