Great find in Madrid!! After slogging through a small part of the Prado (art museums are not our fav), we were ready for lunch. This place is right behind the Prado - perfect location. Ambience- cozy place with good indoor and outdoor seating. We chose indoor as the weather is cold today. Service was excellent, so nice! Food- first they brought out hot baguettes! Hubby was in heaven. He had the French onion soup and loved it! We shared the patacones (please excuse spelling). Visited in early May. After a long visit to El Prado, we needed a light meal. We were walking to Retiro park and saw this place and stopped in. Glad we did. We were seated quickly and we ordered coffee and water right away. Then decided to share some hamburger sliders because what we really wanted was some dessert! I came across Café Murillo after visiting the botanical garden across the street. First impression was the decor gave off a cozy inviting vibe. We were seated right away but service throughout the time there was a bit on the slow side. I noticed locals were attended to quicker with their food service, requests, etc. I enjoyed the Hake as it was tender, moist, and well balanced with the garlic and parsley emulsified sauce. The classic French onion soup was also delicious. I also tried the skirt steak which I wasn't a fan of. It was chewy and bland. The chimichurri sauce helped a little bit even that wasn't very flavorful. The service was exceptional; friendly, accommodating, hospitable, etc. They patiently put up with me as I pointed at the menu and tried to communicate with them in my extremely limited Spanish, which consisted mainly of me nodding and pointing. "Agua con gas, por favor." After one of my meals, I wanted to have another Americano, smoke a cigar and continue to enjoy the terrace of my new favorite café. I asked the server, Anny, for a lighter, as I figured she might have one on hand for the candles, or there might be one inside. Instead, Anny asked the Spanish lady beside me, who was ripping cigs and drinking Albarino, if I could borrow her lighter. S/O to Anny for brokering that exchange to perpetuate bad habits. I later allowed the lady to use my ashtray (Cenicero). Favor repaid! Starter. The plantain chips were crispy, salty, naturally a little sweet and with a dab of crème fraîche, made for the most delightful bite. Once the entrée arrived, I had totally lost track of what I had ordered. With each bite, I was trying to diagnose the different components of what I was eating. What puzzled me the most was the grilled item on top. Until I was enthusiastically struck that it was grilled goat cheese! I'm not proud that I forgot, nor that it took me so long to figure it out. I blame the heat and jetlag for that. Once I realized what flavor bombs were going off in my mouth, my eyes lit up with gastronomic bliss. The Quinoa, Lentil, with Goat Cheese salad, was served with lamb lettuce and balsamic vinaigrette. The balsamic drizzle on the bottom of the plate and on top of the goat cheese was just the right amount to provide a little punch and tang to my palate. It's probably the tastiest thing I've had in a while. I was surprised at how satisfied I was after finishing the salad... and with no meat! Who knew!? We had just finished a full day at Prado Museum and had worked up a hefty appetite. We were a party of 4 and showed up roughly around 7pm. They also give you warm bread with butter and oil as well. The burrata salad had a green salad with sun dried tomatoes that was beautifully presented. Everyone was very happy with the quality and presentation of the food and more importantly the taste. Now what I am about to say is a very big and bold statement but the roasted chicken with tomato was one of the best roasted chicken I've had. It was juicy, flavorful, tender, and absolutely delicious. My daughters ordered the entraña and Salmon. Also very very good. I was extremely surprised to be served this type of cuisine. I loved it and would recommend to anyone especially if traveling from the United States. It had a little bit of everything and in my opinion you will leave very happy. We found this cafe, not far from the Prado museum. The waiter was very gracious and anticipated our needs. We thought that as Spanish speakers we would understand the menu, but our Spanish is not Castilian. ‍ Our waiter offered us the English menu as he watched us struggle. We were so thankful!! The servers were very attentive, the manager came to table a couple of time to check if food was good. Remember that in Spain, if you want to sit outside, you must reserve a table, otherwise you sit inside...with the heat in Madrid last Sunday, sitting inside to eat and have two Mahou beers was the best decision. This place is a very nice restaurant across the street from The Prado. We went in on one of the hottest days (over 100 degrees) and it was nicely air-conditioned. the food was absolutely amazing 10/10. i had the chicken paillard and it was perfectly tender and beautifully seasoned. this would have been a 5 star review if not for the brute manager harassing his employees during business hours. when receiving our party he was rude and unwelcoming. we asked for the wi-fi password and he said he would bring it to us and then when he didn't he rudely asked one of his staff to give it to us, the vibe was as if he had better places to be? which places, who is to say because i can't see this man going very far with that attitude. he also called one of his employees "imbecile" in front of us and kept swearing at his employees when he thought no one would hear, but hear we did. the food did outweigh this man's uncouth attitude, however if the food hadn't been 5 stars itself, this man would've brought the review down to 1 star. a reminder to all managers not to belittle and harass your employees during business (or any!!!) hours :) JUST IN- manager brought over bread and butter for us that was 8 euros and we didn't even ask for it beware the 8 euro bread and butter. good bread but not worth 8 euros read more

The food quality here was so great. My wife has the eggs any style with mushrooms which she loved. I had the eggs Benedict with bacon; the english muffin was perfectly toasted yet soft and there was some fried garlic on top (loved it). We shared the french toast that were good. Only place were we have seen Mimosas in our travels so far, and warm bread! The service was excellent as well to round off the experience. This is across a quiet street from the Pardo Museum. Today while at my conference which brought me to Madrid, another person who couldn't remember the name but said this place was near prado, raved about it. So I had to come. Cafe Murillo came from a recommendation from a friend and I am glad we listened. It was a beautiful day, so we sat outside on the sidewalk. My stomach had been bothering me about a day and half and I had not attempted a real meal until now, so I decided to keep it simple and go with the roasted chicken. The waiter informed us that it would take 20 minutes to prepare the chicken. That was fine with me as it's a great sign that they are doing it right. When the chicken arrived it looked amazing and tasted it too. Every bight made my mouth water a bit more. The skin is always the best part. It had such a great flavor to it. We didn't find this out until we attempted to order and were informed brunch only was being served, which worked out because there is a great variety of options. We had a lovely late lunch here. It was blazing hot outside, but nice and cool inside. We had the tuna with quinoa and the tuna was fresh. Just a note: the hubster's familia is friends with the kind chef here, who is a hardworking wunderkind from Venezuela. He is what makes this place a draw for politicians (we saw the US ambassador eating with George Stephanopoulos) and celebs from Spain and abroad. That said, this is my favorite restaurant in Madrid. Popularity is only by word of mouth as it's off the main thoroughfare which means no tourists. Woo hoo! We've had the whole menu and everything is tasty, from the Venezuelan comfort food to the richest truffle risotto I've ever had. We love their wine list and their waiters are beyond attentive.
