I love this place. They literally have everything a person needs to have a wine night. From great select craft beers to various olive oils, this place has it all. Granted it's a bit pricier, but it's definitely a place to go to when you want to pick up something nice for the night. Their grilled cheese was fantastic as well. two thumbs up read more

Love this store. Tons of specialty pastas, cheeses, and meats. The risotto balls are a favorite. Order them from the cheese counter and they'll heat them up for you! They also offer cheese tasting classes in their upper room. Great date night activity. Overall a great place to buy specialty food items, or grab a quick pastry, sandwich or snack. read more

Lots of yummy cheese. Also a little market for lunch or grocery shopping. We stopped here for one of the last stops on the Food Tours of New York. Glad we came. Staff was friendly and helpful. I love cheese, so obviously I would love this place. Can't go wrong. read more

This place can't get any better. You can buy boat-loads of cheese or just a little sliver of cheese. I go with the latter. I usually come here for their pre-packaged/weighed/wrapped cheeses when I need to throw a quick cheese plate together - there are an assortment of crackers (you name it, they have it!) and dried fruit and nuts all for a reasonable price if you ask me. There's also a soup and sandwich sort of station which I've never tried, but according to other review, I'm really missing out. I did, however, bring home two single serving (maybe?) sized trays of mac and cheese. I got classic and sundried tomato/mushroom. I have to say, I don't think the classic is that big of a deal, but the tomato and mushroom mac and cheese was out of this world! It made for a great side dish at dinner. I look forward to trying more prepared foods from Murrays. read more

Always loved this store, used to be on the other side of the street back in the day and nothing has changed. A solid 5-star review...wish you stocked regular (none fruit flavored) Wensleydale...but can't reduce the rating because nobody has it. Coming into town today and will check again. read more

Just got back from lunch at Murray's Cheese Shop and there's no better place for a cheese addict (or cheese first-timer who's not easily intimidated). Nobody seems to mention the sandwiches, so I must. I got a Serrano ham and Manchego cheese sandwich with arugula, grilled. The warm ham and cheese is heavenly! Sure, the arugula gets all wilty from the heat of the panini press and the oils from the Manchego, but it's worth it. Just pretend it's sauteed spinach or something. Murray's has a very small selection of sandwiches right by the window -- the other one I noticed today was prosciutto and mozzarella. And obviously, come here for the cheese. Or to just stare at the brightly-lit cheese cabinet. There are usually small samples on little plastic trays on the counter, so take full advantage of that before (and after!) you buy. Ah, one more note. It's kind of expensive. But it's a specialty cheese shop in the West Village, so really, what'd you expect? My Serrano & Manchego sandwich was only $6.95, though. Stop in for lunch! read more

It was 245pm and I had just returned a DVD at Blockbuster and was on my way home so I can stop by Murray's Cheese to get supplies for a party we were having the next day. But then American Gangster had just come out on DVD. The show was over 3 hours long. If we do the movie at his just then, I could still rush to Murray's just before it closes (they close early on Sundays). OK that should work. After a quick call to check plans, we decided to make it happen. Only thing was he was on the phone when I got to his and by the time he was done, we were quite a few minutes off... there was no way that I could get to Murray's before they closed. Since I wasn't familiar with cheese places in his area, I had to do the most unimaginable thing in NYC.... cross town TWICE in the same afternoon. I would head home, run the cheese errand and then come back to do a movie night. Once I arrived at Murray's it was Wunderful! Wonderful wonderful array of artisan cheeses. I was here on a mission... getting supplies for a wine and cheese party, armed with a cheese list from a very discerning French co-worker. "You HAVE to press the camembert in the middle like such ****press***** " OK I didn't press it, I just couldn't bring myself to press it and return it after it didn't meet my press standards ;p So I was a wimp and gave guy behind the counter the benefit of the doubt that he was choosing a good one for me. Spent a bomb on cheese. Managed to make it back to Movie night and packed some Rocco's for the event. Not sure if I was thinking the next day but I actually left all the cheese in the car (in the end of summer heat) while we were at work (ooops!) but could have just turned out to be a great decision as the camembert et al were a perfect softness by the time of the party. read more

For a cheese lover like me--and a lover of Greenwich Village--Murray's is always a must stop whenever I'm in the city. Yes, the prices can be rather high, and depending on when you go, it can get incredibly crowded, but some of the best cheeses I have ever had have come from Murray's, The jarlsberg and the parmigiano reggiano definitely stand out, but there are countless other types of cheese worth getting here. I've said it a few times--if Murray's were near where I lived, I'd probably be 400 pounds, but also very, very happy all the time. read more

The breakfast melt is to die for. Best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Service is really good. The store smells like stinky cheese but you know that's pretty obvious. Its pricy but its high quality. read more

CHEESE! My favorite thing in the whole world - and I found the holy land. One of my first NY stops was Murray's, I'd read about it online and had high expectations that were definitely met. Got a delicious goat (that I already knew I loved) and a triple cream that blew me away. My guy was on the younger side and didn't have any recommendations but the descriptions told me enough. Price is totally reasonable considering how amazing it is (not much more than Whole Foods). See you this weekend Murray's! read more

Challerhocker is the new Gruyere!! Seriously, this is a big deal for me, because before this day I thought if I could only eat one cheese for the rest of my life it would be cave aged Gruyere. Amazing selection, luvz luvz luvz!! P.S., not as important but they also have a great selection of honey's, from lavender to acacia, which is lovely. I also got a huge chunk of Callebaut white chocolate (because they're out of dark chocolate, which I normally get); granted I haven't had that much white chocolate before, but hands down best white chocolate I've had! Their olive bar was fine, I had been spoiled by better, but I won't rate a cheese place based on its olives. Overall, lovely place, great ambiance, cute staff (I mean really cute, I think they cut themselves a small bite of the cheese every time they give the customer a sample LOL - who can blame them, those are delicious! I hope the employers are not reading this or holding it against them - if anything I think this behavior really sells the product, LOL!) Definitely will be back! read more

i really love grabbing some meats and cheeses from murray's for a date night in. this has become one of our favorite things and we do it every couple of weeks along with some wine of course. we just tell them how many people (we usually exaggerate because we eat so much), what kind of wine we'll be drinking, and go from there. of all the times i have gone to murray's i was very consistently pleased with the variety, signage / descriptions (to help us pick since we are by no means experts in the space), and overall environment of the store. all but one time i was also very pleased with the staff who helped us make our selections, gave us recommendations, and let us taste everything along the way. !the one time i was less than thrilled with the staff (which is why they get a 4 instead of a 5), i felt like she was consistently suggesting the most expensive options they had (which can get quite pricey!). i would ask for something in a general genre and she would start with suggesting the very top priced option available. even when i specifically asked for a cheaper option of something (e.g. prosciutto) she gave us the most expensive one which i didnt notice until we were checking out. unfortunately the experience with her left a lasting impression of being ripped off and i have been a little apprehensive ever since about taking the staff's suggestions. now that i have been back several times, i have regained most of that confidence in their staff but wish i could remember what the girl looked like to make sure i avoid her! read more

My bf took me here for Valentine's Day to pick up some cheese & meats and this was the first time for both of us at an actual shop specializing in just that. We were a little overwhelmed with the choices, but we took a ticket and waited until our number was called. The shop is very well maintained and very clean. The smell of cheese when you walk in was heavenly. The staff were super friendly, very knowledgeable, and very patient with us as we described what we liked and didn't like, and gave us samples to try. You never felt rushed because there were so many employees working behind the counter. We left the shop with 3 cheeses, 2 meats and a fig spread and they all tasted so amazing! Next time, we will definitely come back to get more and to try their sandwiches/small plates. Great place! They also host cheese + wine classes on the 2nd floor which you can see through the glass window while you wait your turn at the counter. They also sell many varieties of beer, they have a small selection of pastries like donuts and cupcakes, and in the back of the shop, they have everything from yogurt to olive oil to many different types of spreads/pastes. read more

I have been coming here for 18 years! One of the true mainstays on Bleecker Street, and it's been a pleasure to watch them grow. Super delicious, wide variety, friendly environment. There's a whopping inch of snow on the ground and mere slush on the streets, and they cancelled reservation for my fiancée 's birthday dinner due to "inclement weather." After our speaking engagement we'll find a more professional place for dinner. read more

I wanted cheese to go in a watermelon salad, and we went through 8 varieties before deciding the second one had been perfect. My boyfriend went in and said "I want some cheese" and left with 2 pounds of 4 varieties that we ate in 2 days (this was with extreme restraint). A friend had Murray's do a cheese table at her wedding and got mad that guests raved about the cheese over her dress. I mean... they'll take you through a gouda tasting flight. read more

I actually didn't get any cheese by itself from here so this review is about the melt and the cheesecake brownie. After being placed 12th on the list of 101 best sandwiches in nyc I had to try the breakfast melt and it was fantastic. I don't know about it being that high up the list but it certainly deserves a place. Its definitely the best breakfast melt I've had due to the cheese being the best. I also had a cheesecake brownie and I thought how would they go together but they did. Everyone in here is super friendly and when I went in the morning at about 8:30 there was noone else in there. read more

Ok, so yes, the little guy has become the big guy. And if you're a massive cheese nerd, maybe Stinky's is a bit more to your speed. Perhaps you would like to go make your own cheese in the grassy hills, and monitor the every move and turn of your fluffy little milkmaker. For the rest of us, Murray's is awesome. Take your number and sidle up to the counter, where your effusive cheese monger will listen to your vague and inane desires and hand over little slivers of your heart's desire to sample. The cheese range from so good to mindblowing, depending on which way your cheese fortune is blowing. Listen to your cheesemonger. I think the fact that everyone there seems to heartily enjoy what they do speaks to good management, and yes, good cheese. Their breakfast burritos are solidly delicious, their olive oils are a rather good deal and they carry bay's muffins. I'm sold. read more

Love stopping by this shop even if I don't have anything specific to purchase or am just in the neighborhood and have some time to spare. If you love cheese, then this is definitely the place for you. There's tons of specialty cheeses, and the staff really seem to know their goods and can guide you if need be. I also like that they have a pretty cool selection of drinks (to go along with your yummy made to order cheese-sandwich!), wines, hard ciders, and beers. And of course the carry lots of other things that go wonderfully with cheese; oils, crackers, jams, etc. Wonderful place. A must stop NYC location. read more

Wow! This place is amazing! Full of many varieties of cheese and also crackers, salami, etc...to accompany your cheese selection. Staff is super friendly and accommodating and willing to help choose different cheeses based on your interest/price level/occassion. Could spend a long time in the store checking out different cheeses and drooling over their selection. Upstairs, they have cheese tastings...I haven't ventured up there yet, but sounds/looks like a great thing to do with some friends. You can peek into the refrigerated sections where they preserve the cheese and also age some of their own cheese right on site! There are always samples displayed on the counter to try and the employees behind the counter always offer samples of cheeses if you aren't sure what to get. Awesome place to check out and also take out of town visitors to. A very unique shop and cool experience. read more

If I had to list some of my favorite things in life, it would look a little like this: cheese, beer, meat, ice cream, bread, pastries, chocolate. When I walked in, I literally walked from one section to the next finding each and every one of those things in wonderful forms. (Oh and if you don't already know it, one step in here and you'll realize just how much you love the smell of cheese too) While looking at the cheese counter, an employee asked if we wanted to sample something which 1) I wasn't really looking to buy anything and 2) sometimes I'm put off by being asked that because it's overwhelming. But he generally wanted us to try things just to taste them and he let us sample two of his favorites. Both were incredible. One we even got a cracker and fudge and caramel drizzled over top. I did end up buying something, but never felt pressured into it. It's definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. I can't wait to try the cheese bar a few doors over as well. read more

Late night cravings for fat and carbs kicked in and lured us to the West Village. Undeterred by the fact that my favorite noodle shop had stopped serving, we wandered down the street to find Murray's. Cheese? Yup, done. The staffs were quite worn out in the last 90 min prior to closing, but welcomed us nevertheless. There were a few tables of young, hip babes that complimented the warm, eclectic decor of the place. Our server forgot my wine and put bacon in my cheese melt (which is impressive, because bacon is something extra to order). But no biggie, I enjoyed the tomato soup and a recommended white wine with passion fruit notes (whose name remained a mystery) while waiting for the no-bacon buttery cheese melt. My friend had the mac&cheese with copious amounts of fried onions and bacons and was very satisfied with that decision. The food menu is fairly simple as the wine and cheese selections are definitely the highlights of this place. Having consumed just enough guilt to cap the night, we left just in time for closing. I'd return for a flight of cheese and more wine. read more

I can really only speak to the Murray's Melts section of the shop, but the selection of cheeses and other items I saw in the store was admirable. Amazing! Amazing service and amazing cheese. I love my cheese but lack the knowledge of pairings and types of cheeses. The service was amazing. Speaking specifically to their catering program, Murray's is one of the best in the city. I plan events for a publishing company and we have used them at least 5 times, after lots of subpar food from other vendors. I highly recommend Murray's to anyone with events in the city that need some nosh! read more

This is THE place to purchase (and sample...a lot) the cheese you can't find anywhere else. Food : The cheeses are great. Really wide variety and you get to taste what you want before buying. Definitely try the "2 sisters" and the ewephoria. Great to eat as-is or with wine. Another thing to try are the small chocolates at the payment counter - the beer one is the best but the salted caramel is not far behind. Also try the ham - the iberico loma is superb.. somewhat expensive but you get a lot for 0.25 Lbs for $15. Drinks : Not really tried any there - they seem to have a variety of bottled drinks. Decor : Its not a place where you eat so not sure if decor is really important. But its clean and well-organized. Service : Very good service. Patient.. they allow you to taste a few cheeses before buying some (kind of like Pinkberry). You go in.. take a #.. and the server behind the counter calls you in a few minutes. Overall : The go-to place for cheese - find your favorite after trying out a few read more

Awesome place. Don't be put off by the scrum at the counter. Get a number. The line moves fast. What brings me back here again and again: the variety, the quality, the cheese mongers (some of the older dudes are great, the younger ones nice too), and the price. Good cheese costs money, but with sale items and many choices, you can get really good cheese here at any price point. Amazingly many sub 20 a pound, a big 20-30 a pound selection, a few 30+ and only a handful that push you beyond 40 a pound. The complementary selection of pastas, sauces, etc. is nice too. read more

A friend asked me to bring cheese as a first course for a dinner he was hosting. Lucky for me, Murray's was right around the corner from me. Step in, grab a number and drool while you wait your turn. Murray's offers a very large selection of exquisitely curated cheeses from all over the world. They have lots of hard-to-find cheeses, and everything from cheddar for the less adventurous to...well, I don't actually know, since I'm not at either extreme of the cheese-eating public. When my turn came I explained that I wanted a first course for about four people, no goat (I don't like goats' milk.) She suggested three would be a good number, and ticked off qualities: Did I want hard, runny, with rind, gamey, mild, etc? We started with a soft mild cheese with a white bloomed rind. OMG, I could have eaten it forever. The next two needed to contrast with it. How about this one? I think we should go a little stronger. This one? Ummm....yes, that seems good. And now how about this? Or maybe this? She offered me tastes of several, warming them briefly in her (gloved) hands before handing them over to me so I could better taste the subtleties of each one. Before long I had a fantastic assortment of three cheeses. I grabbed a loaf of an excellent local sourdough and off I went. Cheap? Not at all. Value for money? Yes, in spades. My friends were blown away by the cheese. "Where did you get these?" "We have a good cheese shop nearby, but nothing like this!" Mission (deliciously) accomplished! read more
