We ordered and ate in the bar. Getting drinks was fast and easy. The food was not fast or easy to get. There were two people behind the bar. We were told that only one was taking food orders. Service in the bar is bad. We ordered the fish and chips. The chips were awful. Tasted like sawdust. My wife was puking up the food most of the night. My fish was ok, nothing special. Overall a bad eating experience. I would avoid this place. We went there because we saw Chef Ramsay fixed this place. It did not stay fixed. read more

Excellent restaurant, excellent service. This is a charming hotel built back in the 1850's. It was a last minute decision to go here and I am so glad we did. Even in the pouring rain! read more

The hotel needs a better run restaurant than this. The waitress was rude, the food was terrible. Three burgers were ordered, all med rare, they came out cooked like shoe leather. The fish and chips was MEH at best. The appetizer came out with the entrees and it was cold. The waitress never came back to see how anything was, we never got any more drinks to wash down the food. Perhaps they should ditch the white table cloths and spend that money on training staff, especially the ones in the back that were fighting, they need to use their indoor voices and swat flies. So many better choices people, go elsewhere. read more

We had breakfast in the restaurant and also ate once on the bar. I can't really see anything wrong with either meal. Good food and good portions. The staff were really nice at all times. There are several places to eat in town. Don't pass up this place when you're here. read more

Love this place!! Delicious food with the great atmosphere and service. The whiskey peppercorn pasta is pretty delicious!

The waitress was very nice but just reviewing the food, I could only give it 2 stars... which might be generous? Everything we ordered was way over cooked, or possibly cooked in really old oil. Either way, both super gross scenarios. Those are not sweet potato fries, they're regular fries but so oily and over fried, my stomach was hurting after a few bites! Even the tortilla chips were nearly burnt and the flavor was bad. We didn't have time to make a fuss because we needed to be on the road. But in my mind, I don't know a chef that would let this food out of the kitchen. You can clearly see it's not done right. Would not go back. Pretty disappointed this is the only restaurant we tried in this town. read more

First, this is a 'Historic Hotel' location, so, Yes, the building is old, the hallways are narrow, and the restrooms are a little small -- but that said... The service (we had a lunch) was excellent, the staff was proficient & quick to serve, very friendly and the for was great quality. My wife & I enjoyed our lunch here and found the environment was fun. An older group of ladies was having a lunch there, & the staff brought out a special dessert, and sand Happy Birthday. Almost all Customers joined in. It was a fun experience. read more

First of all, this is the best dining room in town by far. Prefect for a historic hotel in the mother lode. The food is also excellent. Try the barramundi or the chicken cordon bleu. The wait staff was professional the food was perfect. If you're visiting Murphys and you want the authentic experience, this is your spot. read more

Food is excellent. Staff is very good. Good selection of cocktails and ambience is very nice.

Good menu variety. Price is comparable to surrounding restaurants and the vibe is really nice on the outside patio

A little day trip with the girls. Stopped by Murphy's to eat. Food was good. The servers did the best they could with the limited staff they had.. only thing we wish they would have double checked the grass area the tables were placed because a doggy did his/her doo and the owner didn't pick it up. I kept smelling it the whole time but couldn't see it until we got up to leave. Other than that, good. we will be back for sure. read more

Murphy's Hotel Restaurant - American Near Me - Murphys, California

Murphys Hotel has consistent service and food. Very friendly and professional staff. I have never had a bad meal there after 22 years of living in the area. It's 1 of 2 restaurants I will always resort to eating at in Murphys. not sure why Yelp has them as a 3 star. Perhaps folks are more likely to report bad vs. good who visit the area. read more

We love the food...especially the prime rib! Have never had poor quality food or service. As locals, we enjoy knowing we can go to the Hotel and have a delicious meal. All the staff are super friendly. Parker, Paddy, Shep...you're the best! Don't miss out on this excellent restaurant and bar! read more

First time trying out this restaurant since I'm from out of town. Thought it would be fun and interesting to dine at a historic location. Food was good. read more

Although I have only been to Murphy's (and Murphy's Hotel Restaurant) twice in my life, great-grandparents were born here and I got to hear all about this place growing up. I was looking forward to this experience. The first time, over ten years ago, the food was great. This time, it was not. Murphys itself is lovely, the Hotel Restaurant was a disappointment. The food is decent but doesn't reflect the price tag. The 5 of us all ordered various specials, cocktails, salads and appetizers. One person ordered her noodles al dente. We all received the main courses at the same time. Her noodles where not al dente. The waiter apologized and reordered her dish. 20 minutes later he returned, her food would be ready in 4 minutes. 30 minutes later her dish arrived. Our waiter ghosted us during the 30 minutes. Or course the 4 of us were long done with our meal when hers arrived. The noodles were al dente this time. No apology, no offer to remedy her inconvenience. Important note there was just us and a 2 seater in the entire dining room. For the next few days we sampled several restaurants in Murphys and had quite different experiences. read more

Great food! I love eating in the bar. Their breakfast, lunch and dinner menu are wonderful. They make good cocktails too! Thank

The hotel restaurant was good years ago. It has gone down hill so much since then. We went this week and the staff were friendly but disorganized. Our food was terrible. There is no way a professional cook made our food. My husband and I both felt sick last night. Today, my husband has been vomiting all afternoon. We will no longer go back after this experience. I guess being on Gordon's show didn't do them any good. read more

We came here Sunday to watch the Game. Fun place to go, Great Service also but I ordered a BLT Sandwich it was good but there was a long hair inside of a bite I took. It ruined my meal. I know this can happen but I just let it go and didn't say anything as I don't like to send my food back. read more

We just had a fabulous meal here. The food was delicious and the service was beyond compare. Patrick was our server and he was friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic. He kept us entertained and met our every need. He took the whole experience from great to excellent. It is employees like this that will keep people coming back. Patrick is a shining star. read more

We go here a lot for dinner and it's always been pretty good. I went today for lunch and it was bad. They ran out of Turkey... so there goes all the healthy options.I ended up ordering cheeseburger and the patty was super dry and over cooked. I had to smother it with ketchup to get it down. Stopped eating it after half gone. The onion rings were super soggy and nasty. I ordered a Shirley temple and the brought me a pomegranate liquor drink.. I don't liquor at all so I was not happy. They were short staffed and you couldn't even get someone to let them know how bad it sucked. Wasted time and money. Very disappointed. read more

We came here with a party of 7 and had a great dinner. The service was exceptional and the food was delicious. It was my daughter's birthday and they made her day. The location within the historic hotel was neat and we can't wait to return. read more

This place never disappoints me! Friendly staff an attentive. Fillet mignon was amazing! My go to spot every time I visit Murphy's!!

The servers don't wear masks! You heard me right. It's Covid and they don't care if you get sick! Don't adhere to County Health requirements. Eat at your own risk. Also food was okay, but nothing special. Bar fare. Our server left before we got our bill. Didn't tell us. Had to ask another server for bill. Also umbrella was broken and kept tipping into us. Should of known when no servers had a mask on to not eat here. Don't make the same mistake. read more

We enjoyed lunch in the bar on Saturday and wanted to share our pictures of our yummy meals! We had a guest from Maine (Flat Stanley) so we wanted to share some of the history with his classroom of 1st graders. The only thing better than my chicken avocado sandwich (with side salad) was the very cold IPA. We'll be back! read more

I have never experienced such harassment and discrimination until I came to this restaurant. We walked in during our grace period for our reservation, and our hostess informed us that they gave our table away. We didn't mind since we knew we were 15 minutes late to our reservation. We were very understanding. But then, our waiter came to our table and verbatim said, "Oh, seems like you ladies are stuffing your faces with butter. I will be back later." We hit him back with some friendly banter and were ready to order, but he walked away. For the next 20 minutes we were mocked at by the other waiters and hostesses. They walked by our tables and laughed at us and never took our order. We eventually caught on and got up to complain to the manager. The manger chose to recommend other restaurants to us instead of helping us. Their racism was very loud and clear. We walked down to the restaurant V where we thoroughly enjoyed our service and food. It's very unfortunate that we paid for the most expensive suite at this hotel just to be served with the worst service of our lives. We will never come back here again and we caution people of color. Be very weary of your stay here. read more

This place is consistently fantastic! The bar staff is knowledgeable and makes great drink. The restaurant is staffed by very nice folks who are always accommodating. (Not our first time here(4th) Worst ever...took 35 min to get our meals...I asked for my patty melt well done no opinions with tomato instead.. my husband had eggs benedict he said it was ok too buttery...now my patty melt was rare and unedible fries were cold... unacceptable($17.00). So I sent it back. When they brought it back (took less than 5 min) burger had no flavor what so ever fries so burnt and greasey..I ate maybe a quarter of the burger and no fries....we asked see the manager cuz we're not paying for that...nope...he was the worst manager ever I wish I got his name...but he told us we had to pay for it or he was calling the cops...my husband said said go ahead we waited...the manager still arguing with my husband and says do you really want the sheriff's to come we said yes...after the manager argued for about 10 min....we didn't pay for crappie food we paid for the eggs benedict not the patty melt..I so wish I would of taken a picture of my plate ...tourist town....I've been going over some of the reviews omg this manager doesn't care told someone on their post " I guess never see you in the future" WOW read more

My husband and I adore this town of Murphy's & we stayed in town for 2 nights one of the nights at the newer hotel across the parking lot from this restaurant. The staff were very accommodating and the food that we choose was A+++ My hubshad their famous Fried Chicken & let me tell you he is a fried chicken connoisseur ! and he can't wait till we return to have it again. I ordered the chicken cordon bleu and it was equally delish both served with mashed potatoes & yummy asparagus spears . We waited on the outside patio and had beverages from the bar and the staff there was also very accommodating ! Beautiful spring day and delicious meal to end our day. read more

If I could give a 0 I would and that would still be too nice. THE WORST dining experience my friends and I have ever had. 1. Waiter was slow from the start. Took a while to get our order taken and when he ordered a bottle of white wine is was not even chilled. 2. While waiting forever for our food we asked for more bread but the waiter "forgot" to bring it. * It took forever to get our meals. We watched people who ordered after us get their food before us and watched a table get the completely wrong order. 3. There were 3 of us and we all ordered the fillet, 1 was medium rare, 1 was medium and 1 was medium well. They ALL came our well, no pink at all!!!! When we asked to have it corrected our waiter asked if we wanted something else as it would take 45 minutes to correct. 45 minutes for a RARE steak??? (we are pretty sure the cut of meat was not even a fillet but eventually it was tender and flavorful thanks to the gravy/sauce that they use) 4. When the fillets came out for the 2nd time we are pretty certain they plated it on the original plate with the original sides as the veggies and potato were cold! 5. When we asked to speak to a manager we were told there was no manager on duty but we could talk to him, the waiter!!!! How is there no manager on a Friday night???? After researching a bit we found out this place was on the TV show "Hotel Hell" perhaps they should look into "Restaurant Impossible" as their next attempt to improve read more

This was our first time trying this place for lunch; we weren't impressed. The food itself was good, but the waitress we had was just horrible. She was bland and somewhat rude to us, then would walk to the table next to us as lively and nice as can be! I don't get it. She looked at us like she was doing us a favor by serving us and taking our order. We had to ask for drinks for be refilled, we were never asked once if we needed anything else with our meals or even if we wanted a Togo box. The food was good, but not good enough that I will come back to deal with customer service like that. read more

I can't imagine whatever possessed me to change my carefully researched restaurant plan to go to the Murphy's Hotel for lunch. Perhaps, because S had his heart set on a steak and the place I had carefully chosen did not have any on the menu at lunch. We ordered: a steak sandwich, crab cakes, 2 orders of fried calamari and bread pudding. The first order of calamari was tough with little breading. The second was prepared. I like my food salty and usually add it everything. This dish was so salty I could not eat it, the salt stuck to my mouth. My crab cakes were the best thing we ordered. The steak that brought us to the Murphy Hotel was thin and had no taste; S was convinced that they gave him less steak than the table next to us. The bread pudding took 15 minutes to come to the table, we begin to feel uncomfortable because we were the only people left in the room and they were counting cash. The waitress had told us how wonderful the bread pudding, a house specialty was. I thought it was pretty good. When she asked S he told her it was so-so. He had worked himself into such a state about his steak I don't think anything would have made him happy. I felt bad for the server, and very unhappy that this pricey lunch was terrible. read more

Murphy's Hotel Restaurant - American Near Me - Murphys, California

I sure wish I would have dined at the hotel rather than ordering my cheeseburger and fries to go. Because I would have sent them BOTH back. I even asked for the fries to be packaged separate from the burger...they usually lay the burger atop the fries, and that just doesn't work. Fries get limp. Today's fries were not only limp, but dark brown. Which is fine if they're Sweet Potato fries, which they are not. I ordered the burger Medium. It came MediumRARE. Such a horrible disappointment. It took me a year to learn not to order breakfast eggs scrambled, soft. They apparently don't know you can't walk away from the pan. Always overdone. So now I order poached....but I think I'm done with the Hotel food at this point. Sad, cause I like all the servers, they're great. read more

This review is for the restaurant only. I've read a lot of mixed reviews about the restaurant. It is located on the main floor of the historic hotel. The decor is definitely old fashioned, 1800's gold rush era. Since the hotel dates back to that time period, the decor is appropriate. I've eaten here numerous times and we've always had good service. I always order the spinach salad and the calamari dore which are both very tasty. My uncle always raves about the fried chicken which is really yummy. My mom usually orders the prime rib, which she loves. Dad usually orders either the prime rib or the calamari dore. I've also had breakfast here a few times. The prices are very reasonable and the food is good standard breakfast fare (eggs, pancakes, etc.). The restaurant is not usually crowded so consequently you probably won't need a reservation (unless it is on a busy weekend like Grape Stomp). Most of the other restaurants in Murphys require reservations especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. Casual attire is appropriate, but then again it is appropriate pretty much all over Calaveras County. I can say that because I'm a local. ;) read more

Brought my wife daughter and granddaughter Saturday night great food, great service. We had starters drinks dinner dessert and coffee at the end of our dinner we were just finishing up our coffee and a waiter not ours said we needed to leave the next reservation for our table are waiting. Service so so, food bland poorly prepared and no flavor. The bar has good drinks and service

This review is written about the restaurant, NOT the hotel, and only because it is full of tourists during the Covid19 pandemic. NOT A SINGLE WAITER HAD A MASK. The food was very good, the service was slow and we couldn't figure out if the waitress really wanted to be working or not. It was wonderful to feel normal - dining out on the patio. Its actually a lovely space. BUT...its California law, and I do not care if management is making a political statement or not, it felt creepy. Our busser also picked up our glasses to refill them, and we all wiped them off before drinking. I KNOW it seems over the top, to have to follow the rules. But if the decision is coming from management NOT to protect their workers, then I want someone to know. I tried to actually find a place to report it. PLEASE just let your employees wear masks. SOMEONE will get sick. read more

Clean and close to everything! Perfect walking distance to Main Street. Wish I could have stayed longer. Will be back soon!

This place is straight up bussin bussin, good service and great food. Outdoor patio is also great on a sunny day

Walked in looking for nice place to enjoy outdoor dinner, and have enjoyed many meals over the years here. No staff wore masks. Table was dirty. No extra effort to sanitize surrounding dirty tables. Just using rags, the old pre- covid way. Needless to say we immediately left and won't be back till we see improvement. read more

The aroma wafting up the Main St. sidewalk from the nearby Murphys Historic Hotel & Restaurant helped me make a quick decision:: Dinner here & now! The Veal Parmesan Special was sold out. Blackened Mahi-Mahi was topped with a mango-avocado relish & served with coconut wild rice & vegetables. One of the oldest continually operating hotels in California, it was built in 1856. Copies of the original Guest Register show such signatures as Mark Twain, John Jacob Astor, Ulysses S. Grant, Daniel Webster, John Crocker, Thomas Lipton, Samuel Pillsbury, John Bidwell, Charles Bolles (alias Black Bart), Henry Ward Beecher, Horatio Alger, J.P. Morgan & William Randolph Hearst. Rooms 9-19 upstairs are named for such notables & are furnished with authentic period antiques. The doorway to Grant's bedroom was glassed so I could see every item in the beautiful room. The Saloon in the front held a lively crowd @ the bar & pool tables. The Old West feel of this venue has definitely been preserved. Love it! read more
