Exploring Murphy's Curiosity Shop is like falling down the rabbit hole in Alice & Wonderland. You never know where you're going to land, but it's quite the trip! If you are looking for a specific item, Ricky will help you find it, though it may take a bit of time, as the shop is not logically organized and challenging to navigate. But if you're not in a rush, it's super fun to explore. A few years ago Ricky helped me find a gorgeous antique end table; more recently Ricky found a frame for a painting and framed it for me... he has a big collection of frames and artwork. Then he helped me find a marvelous collection of interesting containers, from old candy tins to used fancy cigar boxes (I use them for gifts of dried fruit I preserve or other things). Yesterday I left with two beautiful teapots of different styles and sizes. I've posted some photos of my Murphy's treasures below. This weekend I'll take a look at fountain pens for my daughter. I'm sure I'll return many more times for all kinds of interesting things, useful and decorative. You're not going to get flea market prices here but Ricky tries to be fair and will look up the standard going price of an item he's not sure about. my wife and I walked in to this store on Sunday with an hour to go till final close . presumably everything was 30 % off . huge sighn in the window stating store closing huge sale ! owner met us at the door and as my wife reached out to admire a piece of uranium glass valued at most $60 ( being generous ) the owner exclaimed " don't touch that its over $ 700 ! " I should have known we were in trouble at that point but I was intrigued as we carefully walked through single file trying to take it all in mass piles of eclectic treasures but mostly trash, everywhere !! I found 4 items i thought to my self I would pay at most $ 100 I politely asked the owner how much after a long pause he barked out $ 200 !! I immediately set 2 items down and asked ok how about these 2 items he responded with $ 45 each i asked would you consider $ 50 for the pair ? a fair price as I buy and sell for a living. the owners response and I quote " i would rather set them on fire then accept that price !! " mind you he made no mention of any sale and it was quite obvious that inspight of closing his shop forever within the next hour he had no intention of selling a dam thing !! I had hundreds of dollars cash money in my pocket ready to buy , but the owner was rude and simply unwilling to sell anything !! needless to say my wife and I left empty handed and blown away by the off the wall experience and incredibly rude owner !! read more

To quote my daughter after our one and only visit to Murphy's Curiosity Shop: "The most curious thing is how it manages to stay in business." I couldn't summon anything nearly as witty as that. I was too preoccupied with replaying how I'd just allowed myself to be had by someone who is either delusional or an unrepentant liar. Hard words, I know, but my words would have been MUCH harder had I not waited a few weeks to calm down before writing this review. I can't describe how angry I felt as I drove away after having paid over $120 for about $60 worth of merchandise. I went in with (1) high hopes of finding treasures in the clutter (I love cluttered stores), and (2) the intent to support a small business. I should have known that I was in trouble when every item I sent up to be held at the register was hinted at as being priceless. Just a few examples: Well-worn leather belt with cracked and peeling color but in serviceable shape otherwise? It had retailed for well over $100! Cheap, lightweight commemorative metal cup with chipped finish that we only wanted for the kitsch factor? He'd JUST put it out and would need to look it up...it could be valuable! Plastic shoehorn? He'd only just brought it in...it's very, very nice and he's only selling it because he has another one at home! Crocheted doily? Hand-crafted! Fast fashion skirt? It's gonna cost more than we expect because of the quality! Necklace with plastic beads? It's hematite! When I tell him that it's definitely NOT, he insists that I take another look because I must be wrong...trust me, I'm not. The process: 1. He talks up every item as it's sent up to the counter. 2. Then he talks up each item again as he officially prices it (round 1). He examines every piece of jewelry - no matter how obviously cheap - through a loupe. A loupe! He looked at a bedazzled (used) butterfly hair clip worth no more than $5 through a loupe! I was so beside myself that I couldn't find the words to protest. Interestingly, he didn't mention that the clip was missing stones when he priced it at over retail. 3. He insists that each plastic bauble is highly collectible and prices it accordingly. If you try to point out that what he's holding is inexpensive and quite common, he does not budge on the price at all and tells you to just leave the item on the counter. 4. Once you accept defeat on what's left, he prices your items AGAIN (round 2) as he lists them on a big sheet of paper. 5. Once you review the big sheet of paper, he prices the items YET AGAIN (round 3) onto a smaller piece of paper which will ultimately be your scribbled, illegible, non-itemized receipt. 6. While you're digging money out of your purse/wallet to pay, he goes to the other customers in the store and blames the delay on you because you have "a lot of little things." 7. After you drive off feeling scammed and disrespected, you realize that you didn't get everything you purchased because it got lost in the jumble on his side of the counter. Enjoy selling your over-priced plastic shoehorn TWICE, Murphy! And I hope the remaining $50-$60 I stupidly let you take from me was worth losing repeat business. Not all small businesses deserve to be on a pedestal and yours is a prime example of that. read more

Ricky is a riot and I love his shop! I always take an hour or two to rummage through his collection and I always find something I love! This time around I bought a flower frog for $10.00, a pen for $15.00, a cool old family crest stamp for $5.00, upholstery needle $3.00, antique vintage oil can $10.00 for my hubby and a vintage tin can $10.00. The store is aptly named! My daughter and I enjoyed our wanderings through this shop of curious treasures. When I asked the store owner how he came by his collection he explained that he was a just a bend in the river and things found their way to him. I found this place to be a treasure trove of cool unique jewelry and decor, collectibles, records, an awesome vintage sci fi book collection, toys, clothes, antiques of all kinds etc! I could have been there for hours digging through it all which is one of the fun parts of coming across a collector such as this. The owner has an eye and appreciation himself for beautiful things and relics of the past. He treated me with kindness and gave me a great deal on what I purchased. I can't wait to go back when I'm in the area! Highly recommend for people who LOVE finding curiosities and the people who share them in shops like these. This place is a lawsuit waiting to happen. No where to walk, shit is all over the floor, also if there's a fire. Well, you're screwed. I've driven by this place a few times, and it's always closed, but sign says, "open." Today, was finally my lucky day. This place was actually open! I was a little overwhelmed walking into this place, because they're so much junk to look at. I see this cool poster on the floor, and I'm pretty aware of the artwork, I ask the owner about the price. He replies, "$2,400." I'm laughing in my head at this point, to which I reply "that's really cool." He freaks out, and tries to correct me on my verbage. To which I think, "yeah, okay you old mentally ill kook." Everything I was interested in, the owner tells me it's $500 or that's over $100. Clearly, this guy is a hoarder, and doesn't wanna sell anything. So, he'll say the some ridiculous price when he knows it's worth $20. I found everything that he was showing me online for waaaay cheaper than what he was asking for. Not sure what the owner is smoking, but yeah. Also, thinking about calling the tv show "Hoarders Buried Alive" to help him make some room in his shop haha. read more

This store is such a disorganized and cluttered mess it's extremely dirty as well but that's only half the reason I'm giving it a such a low review! I actually found a little gem after digging thru the chaos but the owner is so rude and unfriendly and completely ridiculously priced that I decided against giving him my business. I had to bite my tongue as I walked out and left my little treasure behind. He treated me and my 6 year old son so badly I couldn't get out of his store fast enough. Such a shame I love supporting small businesses and I'm a sucker for vintage things!
