We've eaten here a LOT over the years & I'm pleased to see some new items have been added to the lunch menu (didn't check the dinner menu yet). What's going on with the beer on tap that has vanished? Been there twice for lunch and once for dinner in the last month or so & no beer is available on tap! It shouldn't be hard to rectify this and frankly you make more $ on tap beer anyway. What happened to the Chop House? This used to be our go to place for dinner; however, I'm not too sure if I would go back again after today's experience. We decided to have a late lunch; the place was not that busy. My wife ordered an Alfredo pasta dish; I ordered a rib eye steak. After placing the order, it took a LONG time to receive our food. Although the restaurant was not that busy, no bread was served or reason given for the long delay. The Alfredo looked good, but was modest portion. It had a hunk of Italian bread, but no butter or oil. The steak was loaded with fat and had little flavor. A side dish of broccoli was served, but it was overcooked and had yellowish color. For a town that might as well be in Georgia or Tennessee instead of North Carolina, you can find some good eats. The Chophouse is a great steakhouse with an awesome porch. It's one of the nicer places in town, but I would consider it nice in any city. The staff is attentive and knows their stuff. Obviously you can get a great steak, but their fresh fish specials are really fantastic. With a full wine list and top shelf liquors (thank you, Murphy for finally allowing restaurants to obtain liquor licenses), you'll be set here for a nice leisurely dinner with good company. The deck does fill up during the summer, so go for the early bird specials. read more

WORST SERVICE EVER!!! Loved this place for many years but now it just seems to be going downhill. Took forever for our waitress to bring us anything we asked for, steak was cold and it looked like I only got a teaspoon of mashed potatoes. The vegetables on the side tasted awful!! Very salty!! Jeff is the only nice thing about this place..but I think I'll just skip The Chophouse and go to Doyles from now on. Get rid of the caddy waitress and nasty manager girl!! She's very rude!! Had to get up and find someone to take our bill..found her and she didn't seem happy about it and tossed it back to use on the bar! Just awful!! read more

First visit, lovely restaurant, sadly missing personality. Ordered pan seared chicken breast...hard, dry, and inedible. Entry came with choice of sides, salad was artfully arranged, lacking taste, mashed potatoes, and vegetable of the day (green beans) were ordinary. Returned chicken...offered to pay for what I did eat. Silly me, they had already charged me for a side salad, veggies and mashed....to the tune of $5.00. Keep in mind upscale restaurant, upscale prices, a glass of Berengers white zinfandel was $8.00. Just visiting Murphy N.C. no fear of ever having to return to the chophouse.Nor would I ever recommend it to anyone else. read more

I was looking for steak and seafood and was surprised to hear that Murphy, NC had a restaurant that fit the bill. The interior is dated, the service is friendly but extremely slow. There was no bartender so the waitress has to play bartender too. The wedge salad was drowning in blue cheese dressing, the calamari and the steak were fabulous!! I had only one drink because the waitress is so busy "multi-tasking" that she never came back around and asked about drink refills. Bottom line, there is not much to choose from in Murphy and the food is good but extreamly over priced for what you get. On my next visit to Murphy I think I will try something else. read more

I gave this restaurant 3 stars, but really it's 4 stars for lunch and 1 star for dinner. Like other reviewers have said, the choices are limited in Murphy. The lunch in the patio is really good. Fresh items, great prices and a view if the goings on in downtown Murphy. Dinner is pricey, not very good and way too formal for a small mountain town. Skip the dinner at Chophouse and go to Doyle's or Shoebooties instead. read more

The service and food were good. But it appears that the establishment does not understand what "unlimited" means. One of our party had ordered the unlimited king crab legs, which turned out to be snow crab. A menu error which was not a deal breaker, as the crab legs were of nice quality anyway. However, when a third round of legs was ordered, the server indicated that the kitchen ran out. We then requested the check, which took longer than normal to arrive. Upon departure, we noticed other tables still being served the crab legs. Was this lie, along with delaying the check, some tactic to make us order something additional? Shame on you for lacking integrity and misrepresenting your offering. We will not return. read more

Amazing food!! Came in from out of town and found this hidden gem. Our waiter Mark was wonderful, made me one of the best martini I've had in a very long time. He made appetizer suggestions which we took and the calamari was very good, next up surf and turf very very good!! To end our meal we order the creme brûlée and coffee. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I am in town on business and the locals suggested the Chophouse for dinner. It was very good. They had a special on Monday and gave a free dessert or appetizer with an entree. I went for the fried portabella mushrooms with spicy sauce. It was great perfectly, fried and well pared with the sauce. I actually panicked a bit because it was so much that if I finished I would not be able to finish my meal. I skipped the bread (although it looked great) and had well prepared Caesar salad with house made croutons. My main dish was a peppercorn sirloin that was spicy, tender and juicy. The veggies were great, but the baked potato was only ok. I am definitely a fan. read more

Went for a farewell lunch with a friend who is leaving the area. We each found our meals to be lacking. I ordered the special fried grouper, which I expected to be lightly battered, but was served as a slab of overly deep fried fish with a side of slaw that tasted slightly like soap. I was never asked if I would like more coffee, while my friend recieved a refill of her drink. I was overcharged on my check and needed to get that cleared up as well. My friend's dish, the quiche, according to her, was not tasty at all. This was a disappointment. I'm glad there are a lot of other places to dine, as I dont' think I'll try lunch there again. read more

We rented a house for the week nearby and went to Murphy's for my sister's b-day. Our Server, Tara, was great. Very attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is nice and compared to most things in that area, would be considered "fancy". The food was good, but to me, not outstanding, for the prices. I had the filet, which was very good. The sides were unimpressive. My sister had the macadamia crusted chicken, which she liked. I tasted it and it was good, but not what I would go to a chophouse to eat. My dad had teh prime rib. It was huge. He said it was good. The wine list was pretty extensive. For all the hype and the prices, I would have expected something a little more refined. But it is a nice place to go for a special occation if you are in the area. read more

Our waitress was wonderful, she attended to our every need. This was a first time visit and my husband and I had the specials, Arctic Char and Scallops. Both were very well presented and tasted great. The focaccia bread (I don't usually eat the bread) was really good as well. My husband had the Cream of Chicken soup special, he would give it at least a 4 and a half. If we are ever in Murphy again, we will be back. read more

What a pleasant suprise! We were in town from Atlanta and were apprenhesive about local restaurants, but the chophouse was delicious. Enjoyable evening. Hubs had a build-your-own surf and turf (special), I had the steak au poivre. Steaks were cooked as requested, my strip had a nice reduction on it. Cheese grits and creamed spinach were both good. We didn't try any appetizers and didn't have room for dessert. Overall an enjoyable meal. Service was attentive. Priced more on the fine dining side; however, definitely casual (hubs had a nice shirt and jeans was still dressed more nicely than many men there). We would go back. FANTASTIC DINING EXPERIENCE!!! PERSONALLY MET THE CHEF. My better half had filet mignon with sea scallops and I had filet mignon with the crab cake both steaks were cooked to perfection the crab cake was the best I've ever had. The sea scallops were divine. I highly recommend the Caesar salad also... this place knows how to make an original Caesar salad. Don't forget about dessert we had creme brulee and cheese cake with a salted caramel drizzle. The wine selection is very extensive and Dave was our waiter. I wish I had taken pictures. Just went with four of our friends for Sunday Brunch. My wife and I ordered the eggs benedict and my daughter ordered the prime dip sandwich. Our eggs benedict was cold. The Chop House fries were too salty, the whole dish tasted stale and the portion sizes were extremely small and it had very little Hollandaise Sauce. My daughters sandwich was also stale in flavor and the bread was so dry she could barely chew it even after dipping it in the Au Jus dipping broth. The others in our party were similarly unimpressed, One of them had ordered the stuffed french toast. What it was stuffed with we could not say. It was basically a couple of pieces of toast with the thinnest amount of creme cheese you can possibly apply to a piece toast and a little,(VERY LITTLE) berry juice of some sort drizzled sparingly inside. THE FOOD WAS JUST TERRIBLE. I have had a better breakfast at Waffle House for much less than the $50 I dropped this morning. In addition, men's restroom needs attention. The urinal will not flush and as a result, the whole room smells of fermenting urine. The only good thing was our server, she was very pleasant and attentive. Food is fine, service is acceptable, prices are reasonable. However, I was highly pissed recently when I went in with my Mom, Aunt and Sister. My sister had a cup of water from Starbucks with her and as we were looking over the menu, one of the servers came over and told her she needed to throw it out, that drinks carried in were not allowed. How embarrassing to have an innocent cup of water snatched away from you! Also, this was very embarrassing and unprofessional on the Chophouse's part. I asked this server if there was a sign upon entry announcing this policy (I thought maybe we missed it) but the said "no" that since drink prices had gone up they had to implement this new rule. We have been regulars here for some time now, and this was the first I had heard of this. I am not sure how often we will be going back. The success of this establishment seems to be getting in the way of customer service. I think we will choose ShoeBooties next time. read more

Murphy is the westernmost county seat in North Carolina, a small town where you wouldn't expect to find an upscale restaurant. The Chophouse was a pleasant surprise -- elegant atmosphere, reasonable prices, decent food. (I had learned about it off the 'net but it also was recommended at my motel.) Downtown, away from the main highway, but not hard to find. I was there on Wednesday night at eight o'clock, so I shouldn't have been surprised that there were only three other tables occupied. (I had made a reservation but obviously didn't need to for that day and time.) Subdued lighting, white tablecloths, good crystal and china -- nice. The waiter was attentive and not intrusive. I ordered a steak a poivre, which came pretty quickly. The steak was okay, but not quite what I expected -- no peppercorns, though tasty enough, and the meat came already sliced, which I just don't care for. When I'm having a steak, I prefer to cut into it myself. Baked potato with butter was fine, but the vegetable medley that came with the meal seemed a bit skimpy. Good bread, apparently fresh-baked. I did not have any alcohol that night. As I said, I didn't expect to find such a nice place in such a small town, but I am apprised now that there is a significant clientele for such upscale eateries in that area of western N.C. (lotsa retirees, apparently). So -- should you find yourself in Murphy one evening and want a decent steak, I can recommend the Chophouse. It won't knock your socks off, but it's enjoyable enough. read more
