This place is a nice local restaurant that we have been to several times before. They seem to have traditional bar food with an Irish flare. We are vegetarian so the Maurice salad works as well as our vegetarian pizza. Wish they had a few more vegetarian options like a burger. Their onion rings are crisp and nice & hot. I reviewed this place 4 years ago. They have added a lot of gluten free options. Their club and dinty moore sandwiches are so good on their gf bread. Their pizzas are really good too. I have asked for double cheese so the pizza wouldn't be burnt but both times I asked for this, I got home and was disappointed. Great staple if you are in the area. Love this place. read more

Went for dinner tonight and it was excellent. I had the Mac and cheese with pulled pork and it was probably the best I've ever eaten. Husband had all you can eat fish and chips and he said it was excellent, too. The service was perfect. Managers (owners?) were at our table 3 times checking to make sure everything was to our liking. My Mother and I had dinner there last night, which was Friday. We both ordered the all you can eat fish & chips. I had recently been ill, so this was my first real meal in a while. Let me tell you, the food was outstanding! The fish was so fresh & cooked to perfection. The batter was light, crispy & absolutely perfect! We had the coleslaw and the clam chowder to accompany our meal. The soup was amazing, & the coleslaw was fresh & delicious. Our server was fantastic, and very friendly. What a cute little find in the city of St. Clair. We had some time to hop around the area prior to a wedding nearby. The Murphy Inn is a historical site. We decided to grab a drink or two before heading out. I of course ordered my vodka/soda and my friend ordered a diet and coconut rum. He also decided to kick off our day with an Irish Car Bomb!!! We decided to order some food before hopping around to a few other places. The bartender suggested the sampler with came with potato skins, corn beef eggrolls, onion rings, and mozz sticks. Five of us went to dinner. It's Monday, so it wasn't busy at all. We had a new waitress, she was good and attentive. She wasn't able to answer all questions but acknowledged it and and quickly got answers to questions. I had the "build your own" nachos. Pretty skimpy on the cheese and as the add on sour cream was ridiculously small for the add on price of $1.79. It was like a dab of butter. Chips were fresh. I've had better nachos there before. This time, I wouldn't recommend them to some one. Others at table had the Cajun Alfredo, larger portion but noodles were over cooked and mushy. Another order was baked macaroni and cheese. No complaints on that and the portion looked large and came with a house salad and home made bread. No complains on the Rueban sandwich or the onion rings. The shrimp was on the smaller size and a little over cooked. Again, waitstaff was good and friendly. Food was subpar for a Monday, been there before and had much better food. read more

Had lunch today and my Wife ordered Chicken Casadilla (Mexican Thursday". and l had a Dinty Moore ,a glorified corned beef sandwich. It was the best sandwich l have ever had in the State. This is a cute little place is St Clair. There is a lot of history behind this restaurant / inn. It had a nice feel when you enter. If you're in the area, worth the stop in. I went with the cheeseburger and it was okay. Not the best I've, but tasty nonetheless. It did have a good "charcoal/grill" flavor that I enjoyed. I should have asked for it to be cooked medium and I think it would have been perfect. The chips were so so, kind of the standard house made chips. Place had no parking .... Guess it was because of the boat races. It wasn't really that busy when we arrived. There was a van blasting music parked on the corner that had a weirdo sitting on the bench out front. Not a great image. We we sat I. The far back corner by the restrooms.....probably the smallest table in there. Service was slow at best. The big issue I that I got FOOD POISONING from the pizza. Most likely the sausage on it. Girlfriend had a pizza too but only cheese. Place is kinda dirty. Don't recommend at all. read more

Murphy's isn't the best restaurant I've ever eaten at. The menu selection is varied and the food is moderately good. I do enjoy the atmosphere as we prefer to sit on the dining side instead of the bar side, which tends to get a bit noisy. We were disappointment the last time because my husband's dinner was completely cold, not just lukewarm, but cold. (Didn't the waitress notice this when she brought it to him??) He patiently waited for her to return it to the kitchen, while I finished my dinner in the meantime. By the time his dinner came back (warm this time), I was done, so I waited for him to eat. The pizza is ok, but not terrific. We like spinach and feta cheese on our pizza and Murphy's doesn't offer those items. The French onion soup has a bit too many croutons, leaving little broth and the cheese isn't hot and melty the way it should be. The salad dressings are standard issue, nothing spectacular. Like I said, not bad, but not fantastic either. I'd give them more stars if the food was a bit better and had more choices. I can't complain about the service though. We have been here twice, both times on the weekends, late afternoon. In both cases the food was mediocre it beggars the imagination. The fried shrimp was pre frozen breaded stuff that you can buy in the bargain section of any grocery store. We had well cooked red skin potatoes that were ice cold. A previous visit had sandwiches so lame you would have been embarrassed to serve them to the teenagers next store. We had to ask both times for glasses and cutlery from indifferent wait staff in a half full dining room. It was cheap but it was not worth the money. We will never go back. read more

Had a business commitment in the saint clair area on a Sunday afternoon, we were driving home afterwards. Thankfully our crazy governor finally allowed restaurants in southern Michigan to open for dining, we noticed a bunch of cars in the parking lot and decided to stop We were immediately greeted by Evola who took our order and before we knew it had a couple of cold beers on the table! Our business goes elsewhere in the future. So many last chances for Murphy's but this was the actual last one. To rate only pizza for tonight and not the prior several take out orders, wish we would have gone to a Little Caesars and 1) had pizza that is good and 2) saved enough money to buy 2 1/2 more pizzas. During our phone order we specifically requested that our pizzas be prepared well done and with extra sauce. They were doughy with had hardly any sauce. Less sauce than a normal pizza. Like they on purpose did the opposite of what we requested. Couldn't stand them. We had to to add our own sauce and bake them a while to cook that doughy crust. They were good after we fixed them. We should honestly have picked up a pizza at Little Caesar's and saved time and money and had better pizza. read more

Last few times we ordered carryout pizza on monday nights, it has been burnt. The toppings are definitely skimpy too, especially with carry out and half off pizza nights. They did fix it but it's a pain to have to wait another 20 min & drive back. Last weekend we ordered carryout, our burger was missing the lettuce, tomato and the sauce we requested on the side. Fries were soggy. Once again ,they did fix it but it seems everytime we oedere, there is a problem. Disappointed with food in the past few months. read more

Murphy's is exactly the type of place I would expect to get a good brew and some fattening appetizers from in a small town like St. Clair. Their is a dining room and the bar- but I have only really been in the bar. They have a decent draft beer selection - although the last time I went the Killian's tasted a little on the funny side. The bar food is as greasy as I like it. Prices are reasonable and service is friendly. I think they have live music and karaoke on varying nights - They also have some rooms above the restaurant/bar area if you need a place to crash. :) If you find yourself in St. Clair and looking for a beverage - this would be my suggested stop to you. :) read more

A great waitstaff, always attentive. If you want a quieter experience, suggest the dining room versus the bar/pub area. Some of the best appetizers around, good quality food , and specials nearly everyday. Friday night is all you can eat fish, expect a wait!!! It is one of the few historic buildings remaining in a town where Urban Renewal nearly destroyed anything that was historical. This review is for the restaurant only; the building also houses seven guest rooms upstairs. Excellent atmosphere & food, and super friendly service!! A must-see if you're in St. Clair. We stopped in here for dinner on a Monday afternoon earlier this month, and immediately fell in love with the rustic charm and down-home, welcoming atmosphere. The building itself is also very unique and a treasure all its own--having been built in 1836, it's one of the oldest operating inns in the state, with seven vintage guest rooms which are relatively affordable (they currently rent for $90/night). After we were seated in the moderately-filled dining room, our waitress greeted us right away. She had an extremely bubbly and seemingly very genuinely sweet personality, and made us feel so welcomed and appreciated. My two companions ordered the chicken soup to start out, which came out fast and was completely homemade, including big strips of chicken. They said it tasted great, but one, who is on a restricted-sodium diet, noted that it tasted very salty (to an average diner, however, it might be just fine). For our main courses, my companions respectively ordered a fried cod sandwich and an All-American Burger, while I ordered a personal pizza. All were homemade with clearly very high-quality ingredients, down to the potato chips and tartar that came with the fish sandwich, which was a surprise because the prices were so reasonable! I ordered my pizza without cheese, and while most waitstaff embarrass me in front of the table by asking 15 questions anytime a special request is made, the waitress was completely professional about just putting in the order without making a face or asking questions, which I also appreciated! During the meal, the manager visited every table for a couple minutes to check on patrons' satisfaction, which seemed more genuine than standard "table-touching;" she asked what brought us into town, told us about some other hot spots around the area, and fun things to do. We did have to wait awhile (20 minutes or so) for the main course to come out, but during this time our waitress stopped by a couple times to update us on its progress (and to refill our drinks regularly!), which was also a nice bonus. All in all, it was an incredibly pleasant experience with attentive, friendly staff, great food, and an awesome atmosphere--the many other reviews are right on the money. A few tips: - There's live entertainment Wednesday - Sunday evenings - There are daily specials (e.g. Mondays are half off all large pizzas) & super cheap happy hours & evening menus--check their website for a listing. - It's within walking distance to the lake/boardwalk down Clinton St (1/2 a block or so), so you can either park in the adjacent lot or at the lake and walk around there afterward. - The hotel is supposed to be haunted--as someone who's interested in the paranormal, I did some digging and found out that apparitions have been seen in all the guest rooms, but are particularly active in 206 & 207! Pizza here is OFF THE CHAIN. Come here, buy it, be amazed. I went standard pepperoni and cheese and was highly impressed. There's nothing that was lackluster, except maybe the booths in the bar area. It was like I was doing a yoga pose the entire lunch my back was so straight. The atmosphere at the Murphy is outstanding. It has the feel of an old timey hotel with an old timey pub attached. It was a very relaxed and enjoyable setting. The waitstaff was always around with a refill or napkins when needed. I plan on making regular trips here when I visit family in Michigan. Once again, we made the mistake of going for dinner on a holiday (or special local event) where there is a disappointing limited menu. Their regular menu offers a variety of tasty foods that usually is worthy of a recommendation. The limited menus rarely do. The Reuben sandwich was simply the worst quality I've ever seen or tried to eat in any restaurant. Whoever is working in the kitchen clearly needs an education in Meat 101. We ordered the appetizer platter which was disappointing also. 1 potato wedge, 3 wings, 2 cheese sticks, and 4 onion rings. It was a challenge sharing between 3 people. Murphy's prices are not justified by the quality with the exception of a few items. In my personal opinion, if a restaurant cannot handle their menu because it might be busy, instead putting out a limited menu rather than scheduling appropriately...I will not recommend them. I do not recommend Murphy Inn's pizza, but its Fish & Chips are fantastic! I've ordered this to-go several times during the pandemic, and have not been disappointed! The fish is always cooked perfectly, and the portion is generous. Plus, the staff is awesome. read more
