I would say Murphy Black's has reasonable food for a little town. Is it mind-blowing food in the grand scheme of things? No, but the ingredients are fresh and treated well (although I couldn't say they were "elevated"). I had the early bird deal (starter, main, house wine) for under 25 euro.
For the starter, I got mussels in what I think was a Thai inspired coconut sauce. The mussels were nice and fresh. The sauce was alright. A white wine sauce would probably have been better- the sauce was interesting but not amazing. I got hake for the main and was pretty surprised, to be honest, when it came out. It was baked into this creamy form with potatoes on top and it also came with "mushy vegetables" (I think that's what the server said). The hake was undeniably fresh as can be. I'm not entirely sure what to say of the preparation. It wasn't bad by any means, but it was a little on the bland side in terms of appearance, taste, and texture. It kind of reinforced my idea of Irish food as "mushy"- an apt description, again, of appearance, taste, and texture. Still, I enjoyed the quality of the fish, and perhaps my first experience of Irish food(?) Perhaps more traditional Irish food is not something I get entirely. I enjoyed the mushy vegetable side (carrots, potato gratin, and what I think were golden beets), although it felt like a little overkill to have so many soft root vegetables in one meal.
And then I ordered dessert because I always have room for dessert. I got the almond strawberry torte. It was also OK- nothing extraordinary. It felt like a cake you might get at an average cafe. Definitely not disappointing (a horror in a dessert!), but definitely not remarkable.
Now I'm wondering about the 4 stars after writing such lukewarm things. The thing is, Murphy Black's is in kind of a remote place- I feel that for a meal in such a place, the food is reasonable and uses great seafood. Would I choose to eat here in a big city with other options? Probably not. But if I wanted to have a pleasant meal after an amazing walk by the Kilkee cliffs, I wouldn't say no to Murphy Black's. read more
