I was walking around Hobart noticing several restaurants were closed on Sundays. Even Yelp steered me wrong by telling me some restaurants were opened when they clearly weren't. I ended up coming back to the waterfront. Between the Upper Deck and the Lower, I chose the latter because I wanted to save eating at the Upper Deck for my last night in Hobart. The Lower Deck has an interesting layout. Ordering coffee and dessert (ice cream and shakes to be exact) is in one section, food is another and the beverages counter is adjacent to that. As such, after I ordered and paid for my dinner, I had to go to the beverage counter to order a beer. I had to be cautious with my dinner choice. I was about to order one of the prawn dishes but noticed in the display case these prawns still had their head and eyes intact. Instead, I chose the dinner special which was grilled tuna. All the entrees came with fries, but the dinner special also came with a salad. The amount of salad given, in my case coleslaw, should be considered another entree. Although I tried but failed to finish both the fries and cole slaw, I was tempted by the ice cream counter as I was heading out. Of the interesting and not so interesting flavors, I chose Jaffa which is a combination of chocolate and orange ice cream and must have been concocted by a kid. Tasmania is known for its fresh oysters, so I knew that I had to try them out when I was visiting Hobart. After a day trip tour spent touring Mount Wellington and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, I was looking for a good place in town that offered this delicacy. As a side note, the production of Tasmanian oysters has come under attack recently due to a disease that is killing off oysters and threatening the industry. While the disease is not a threat to humans health, I still wanted to be sure that I was getting quality oysters. I actually learned of this info from my tour guide and with this in mind, he suggested that I give Mures a try. Mures is located on the Hobart waterfront at Victoria Dock. There are two entries on Yelp for Mures. One for the lower deck and the other for the upper deck. The upper deck is a sit down seafood restaurant, while the lower deck is a casual eatery intended for the masses. Since I wanted just some oysters, I opted for the lower deck as the pricing is lower. The lower deck restaurant is quite roomy with plentiful seating. You seat yourself here wherever there is room. There is also some outside seating available here if you prefer. To order, you head to the counter to make your selection and pay. Once your order is ready, you pick up your meal at a different counter on the other side. The menu offerings are pretty standard for a casual seafood restaurant. Items like fish/seafood & chips, grilled fish and the aforementioned oysters. The restaurant also has a breakfast menu and serves beer & wine. My order here consisted of a half dozen Tasmanian oysters ($16.90) and a 425 mL glass of Cascade Draught ($7). The oysters are of the Pacific variety so they are on the smaller side, but I loved them as they tasted incredibly fresh with a dash of lemon juice. As for the Cascade Draught, this is a beer from Cascade Brewery which is one of the oldest breweries in Australia. I enjoyed this as well as it is a very smooth tasting beer. It paired well with the oysters. Since the restaurant is casual, service is pretty minimal. There is no table service so you need to bus your own tables when you are done. Pretty much like having a fast food meal, albeit the restaurant has better ambiance. Though the restaurant is no frills, it is nice that there is free Wi-Fi if you need to connect online while dining here. If you are looking for a decently priced spot to enjoy Tasmanian seafood, Mures is a good place. Though don't expect much in the way of service when dining at this casual establishment. read more

Hobart: known for a market, traffic congestion that jams far above the population, and Mures. Despite it being iconic, and charging accordingly, The quality of Mures varies wildly depending on what times of day it is, and no doubt who is working. The fried fish is usually pretty nice, the chips definitely more tasty than the fish and chip shops. I always get the grilled fish, which are usually tasty with a marinade. The salads are pretty poor, the green salad usually just some raw capsicum and lettuce. It's all table service since Covid reopening, slightly irritating (but understandable) the sparkling tap water self service is gone. They get the food out without much wait, and it seems now they are giving you sauces at no charge. Bonus! read more

You place your orders at the counter and collect your meals when your buzzer tells you they're ready. The service is extremely fast - our food was ready in minutes! We really enjoyed our fish, chips and salad and having the ice creamery right there was a bonus. Mures with a waterfront view located on constitution dock has both a deck for the lower class and a deck for the upper class and perhaps the standard and quality of food is also greatly diminished by choosing where you go. My friend being a hot chips person and missing seafood chowder from her trip to the USA was adamant on getting the fisherman basket and the seafood chowder from lower Mures. The fisherman basket comes with two calamari, four prawns, two small fish filets, two Mures marinated chicken wings and two scallops and fries for 24.50 Having heard so much about Tasmanian seafood I was grossly disappointed by the seafood quality. We should have ventured upstairs to the more upscale area but we were in search of casual yet tasty seafood so we just stuck with the bistro and downstairs dining. There are several options for seafood and sides along with beer and wine. My dining party ordered two types of fish with chips and sides. The fish was good for them but not extraordinary. The slaw was bland and looked discoloured. The beetroot salad was much better. All condiments did not come standard. I opted for the seafood chowder with bread. It was good! I was relieved to have a thick, hearty chowder with loads of seafood and a decent flavour. Overall the ambiance could be better. It's a great location on the water so if they stepped up their service so it was quicker and friendlier that would help. Same goes for the service at the espresso stand and ice cream section. I've been dining on the Mures Marinade for over thirty years when I visit Hobart from time to time. It's obviously a favorite of mine and I would think many others since it remains on the menu. This is not the place for Tassie seafood at its super-dooper best. It's fast-food seafood and if you have that perspective it's great with a very wide selection. Try elsewhere for a finer dining seafood experience. And yes, other reports are correct about this being well frequented by visitors - of course it is, in the heart of Hobarts tourist precinct. But it needs to be to get the throughput to justify the selection and overall scale of this place. The wait can be long at times but it's not that bad. Look around, look at the queue, and ask about the wait time when you order if you are in a super hurry otherwise chill and enjoy one of Tassie's best city vistas. Grabbed an ice cream cone on the lower deck today. The portion was good sized, the ice cream was very tasty with a nice creamy texture, and the waffle cone had that hint of anise that I love. While all sea fare was super fresh it just lacked flare and did not hit the spot for us. Also, the chips weren't great, for a glorified fish and chip place this must be rectified with urgency. Mures is the place we go to every year for their crumbed blue eye meal. We love it. However the price of that meal is now $21 per serve which is 2 small to medium fillets of blue eye fish and chips. When you include a few salads and an ice cream or two a 5 person family costs roughly $150. That's a lot of money for what is essentially a fish and chips meal. I'm not sure how many could afford this. I stopped by today to grab a quick Fish/Chip for lunch. The Lower Deck is a casual dining place with mostly tourists and locals. The area has both outside and inside dining. On one of the hottest days in Hobart, I chose inside (near 40 C - outside). The air conditioning wasn't quite sufficient, even when I selected a table just near the output vents. The waiter/waitresses/bus boys-girls are pleasant and smiling when you see them. They keep the tables cleared as many people come through. This was my second time eating the Fish/Chip for lunch. The first time was for their Special in which they had posted as a Ling Fish at $18. The Ling Fish was in the form of 3 battered medallions (four inch diameter rounded) of the fish. These pieces were not dry, so not previously frozen. I considered it good, but not the best I ever had. Today though, I tried what the clerk considered their best fish the Australian Blue Eye Trevalla at $22. Each time I select the batter version was chosen as that is my personal preference. The Trevalla was moist and fresh today. So I enjoyed it as this area should have fresh fish daily. "Mures" was much fresher than the Trevalla that I had at the floating bungalow cafe "Flipper" yesterday. So I would consider this very good. The chips (potato fries) here at Mures were very good with slight crunch exterior. I would give the edge on the chips though to "Flipper". For $2 extra one has to pay for the Tartar Sauce. The tomato sauce (ketchup) was free at the central pickup counter. Patrons get a remote buzzer that vibrates when their order is ready. It took about 15 minutes to get my order. I also had their breakfast here the other day, it was their large breakfast plate of two hash browns (fried potato cakes), two poached eggs, two slices of toast and slices of ham. It was decent andd quite a bit of food. The breakfast ends at 10:30 am. They also have a ice cream bar on one end of the restaurant. The sales clerks are pleasant and provided nice scoops of ice cream. There is a nice selection here at Mures Ice Cream Bar that offers also shakes, coffee, cappuccino, cakes, and sandwiches. read more

For many years we have been to Mures for family outings, but regretfully the last three times the food has been extremely disappointing. We kept thniking it might just have been a bad day. Yesterday the fisherman's baskets were all overcooked and cold, the grilled blue eye was so thin that the skin was the thickest part of the fish, cold chips and passable salad. The children all left their food as did the birthday person. For 5 out of 7 to leave the food because of the poor quality, has to give a clear message! Came down to Victoria Dock and was recommended to come to Mures. I was sadly disappointed. We had grilled Dory and Chips as well as a seafood chowder. The Dory lacked flavour. My parent's local fish and chips does a better job of grilled fish and chips and they live in south west Sydney! The chowder (although our expectations are quite high with the chowder we've had in the past around US seaport cities and Sydney!) was mediocre. The service was good and they promptly cleaned the tables outside. It had a nice setting out on the dock but those seagulls are fierce, which detracted from the experience on top of the fairly average food. What a fantastic location in the harbor. This would be the main reason to come here for an ice cream or cuppa, not much else. I had the breakfast frittata served on sautéed spinach. They forgot to mention that it would be underneath a glob of melted, greasy cheese. The whole plate was swimming in grease, not a desirable way to start the day. On Thursday Feb 11, I went to Mures and it's not the first time I've been. The last time I went the portions had diminished but the prices didn't. I was so surprised when I went in this day to find that the prices have increased... but the portions had DOUBLED. $25 for a Fisherman's Basket but it was so large I couldn't finish it. A first for me. A dozen oysters is still high but they are so worth it. As always the seafood was morning caught fresh and the quality of service was exceptional. I had to pay for my tartare sauce now, which I was not impressed about. I still had to go and get it because you cannot eat seafood at Mures without their Tartare Sauce. It was going to cost me $2. I handed over my money and got not a small shot of it but something that was close to 2/3 of a cup or at least 200 ml of it. I was shocked but in a good way. I have always loved Mures but when they dwindled the portions it had left a bad taste in my mouth... which has now been removed from my palette and I could not be happier. Seafood... dine in... take away... wholesale direct to the public... drinks... ice cream... and now sushi. We had a really great lunch experience (this place is perfect for lunch or a very casual dinner). Prices are a bit higher than the boat stalls outside of their building, but it provides a nice place to sit with warmth and good views, especially during the winter! You can also get beer or wine and prices are a bit high on that as well but it is great to have that option. We ended out having some excellent travella fish with some really good chips. We ate every last bit!! The tartar sauce is really good as well and almost taste like there is a tad of curried spice in it but I could be wrong. Arrived in Hobart early from Melbourne and were keen for some breakfast. A short wander from our hotel and we came across Mures. The decor and theme fit its surrounds and it looked inviting given there wasn't a lot else immediately visible for an out-of-towner. Most of the staff were welcoming. For such a large place and abundance of staff I was a little taken back that there was no table service. The staff member serving me appeared to be either on his first day or somewhat incompetent and did not fill me with confidence that my order would be right. Given there was less than a half dozen people in the place (Friday around 8.30am) our order arrived quickly. Presentation was very good and servings were generous. As expected though, part of our order was messed up by day one staff member but was a minor thing.
