    Half Dozen Oysters ($16.90)
    Jon L.

Tasmania is known for its fresh oysters, so I knew that I had to try them out when I was visiting Hobart. After a day trip tour spent touring Mount Wellington and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, I was looking for a good place in town that offered this delicacy. As a side note, the production of Tasmanian oysters has come under attack recently due to a disease that is killing off oysters and threatening the industry. While the disease is not a threat to humans health, I still wanted to be sure that I was getting quality oysters. I actually learned of this info from my tour guide and with this in mind, he suggested that I give Mures a try. Mures is located on the Hobart waterfront at Victoria Dock. There are two entries on Yelp for Mures. One for the lower deck and the other for the upper deck. The upper deck is a sit down seafood restaurant, while the lower deck is a casual eatery intended for the masses. Since I wanted just some oysters, I opted for the lower deck as the pricing is lower. The lower deck restaurant is quite roomy with plentiful seating. You seat yourself here wherever there is room. There is also some outside seating available here if you prefer. To order, you head to the counter to make your selection and pay. Once your order is ready, you pick up your meal at a different counter on the other side. The menu offerings are pretty standard for a casual seafood restaurant. Items like fish/seafood & chips, grilled fish and the aforementioned oysters. The restaurant also has a breakfast menu and serves beer & wine. My order here consisted of a half dozen Tasmanian oysters ($16.90) and a 425 mL glass of Cascade Draught ($7). The oysters are of the Pacific variety so they are on the smaller side, but I loved them as they tasted incredibly fresh with a dash of lemon juice. As for the Cascade Draught, this is a beer from Cascade Brewery which is one of the oldest breweries in Australia. I enjoyed this as well as it is a very smooth tasting beer. It paired well with the oysters. Since the restaurant is casual, service is pretty minimal. There is no table service so you need to bus your own tables when you are done. Pretty much like having a fast food meal, albeit the restaurant has better ambiance. Though the restaurant is no frills, it is nice that there is free Wi-Fi if you need to connect online while dining here. If you are looking for a decently priced spot to enjoy Tasmanian seafood, Mures is a good place. Though don't expect much in the way of service when dining at this casual establishment.

Mures is a Hobart institution and is in a prime location right on the Victoria Dock. The lower deck is very casual - and it's self service. You place your orders at the counter and collect your meals when your buzzer tells you they're ready. The service is extremely fast - our food was ready in minutes! We really enjoyed our fish, chips and salad and having the ice creamery right there was a bonus. They are extremely generous with the serves of ice cream - the Mures' single serve is the same as a double serve from all other ice cream parlours.

Mures with a waterfront view located on constitution dock has both a deck for the lower class and a deck for the upper class and perhaps the standard and quality of food is also greatly diminished by choosing where you go. My friend being a hot chips person and missing seafood chowder from her trip to the USA was adamant on getting the fisherman basket and the seafood chowder from lower Mures. The fisherman basket comes with two calamari, four prawns, two small fish filets, two Mures marinated chicken wings and two scallops and fries for 24.50 Having heard so much about Tasmanian seafood I was grossly disappointed by the seafood quality. It took forever to arrive. It was at room temperature . Cutlery and water and condiments are self service The seafood chowder. An interesting orange color with two pieces of crusty toast was nice Very expensive for what you get Full of tourists There is also an ice cream and desserts place We got the warm apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and cream Again for 7.90 you don't get a very large slice and you can't replace the vanilla ice cream scoop with one of their more interesting flavours The ginger Meg ice cream flavour is delicious and it is $1.90 for a hefty scoop' If you're visiting Tasmania and want quality seafood this is not the place

We should have ventured upstairs to the more upscale area but we were in search of casual yet tasty seafood so we just stuck with the bistro and downstairs dining. There are several options for seafood and sides along with beer and wine. My dining party ordered two types of fish with chips and sides. The fish was good for them but not extraordinary. The slaw was bland and looked discoloured. The beetroot salad was much better. All condiments did not come standard. I opted for the seafood chowder with bread. It was good! I was relieved to have a thick, hearty chowder with loads of seafood and a decent flavour. Overall the ambiance could be better. It's a great location on the water so if they stepped up their service so it was quicker and friendlier that would help. Same goes for the service at the espresso stand and ice cream section. Understaffed and impatient, let's work on it. Otherwise it's fine for a quick seafood fix.

Way over priced for what we had. You would probably be better served at the fish and chips boat outside than going here.

We came here for a late breakfast/early lunch. It is somewhat more of a refined cake and dessert…read moretype bakery, and the dessert items did look fabulous in the case. For breakfast however, it wasn't very good for me as there were very limited lower carb/higher protein items. We ordered an almond croissant and a sausage and shiraz roll along with a flat white coffee. We sat outside as they didn't have the AC running and it was really way too warm inside. They have table service inside and servers that run out the food you had ordered at the counter. They were all super friendly and even asked if everything was satisfactory as they cleared our table. Unfortunately, neither of the baked goods were great. The almond croissant had a nicely laminated dough although it needed a tad of salt. The dough was buttery however lacking flavor most likely due to a lack of salt in the butter they used in the dough. The filling was almost like really dense cake batter with basically no almond flavor - the texture seemed almost right, maybe they forgot the almond paste or almond extract. We are used to a much, much stronger flavored almond croissant with almond paste inside. There were nicely toasted almond slices on the top. The sausage roll was a real disappointment. Although it looked really nice it was very heavy, seemed greasy and had two fundamental flaws. The dough was too thick around the sausage so when they wrapped it and baked it there was way too much dough and it was actually nearly raw all along the bottom edges. The sausage was not crumbled or taken out of the casing so when you bit through the roll (or even cut it as we did) the entire sausage slipped right out of the dough and left a big empty hole! It did have nice caramelized onions and some herbs or spinach (didn't eat enough to know exactly!) between the dough and sausage - they might have contributed to the wet/raw sogginess of the dough if they were not cooked enough and then released water into the dough. They were very gracious when I asked if I could get a refund for the sausage roll as I could not find anything else I wanted to get as a replacement. Our server could not have been any more professional and nice about it. He got approval from his manager and gave us the refund. The flat white was very good. If I needed to eat some lovely desserts I'd give them another try given their professional staff and good service.

It's about time Hobart got a fancy froyo bar…read more No, seriously. Almost a year ago I was wandering Chapel St in Melbourne and counting fancy froyo bars. I never would have called myself a frozen yoghurt fan so I didn't bother stopping in at any of them, but marvelled at the sheer number of them. (Like, more than two.) So I said I never would have called myself a frozen yoghurt fan, I know. But then my favourite babes at Ethos decided to open their own froyo bar, in proper Ethos ethos. This means not just delicious food but beautiful food. Not just beautiful food but local food. Sourced locally or made in house, everything about Vita is in true Ethos fashion and therefore my new favourite thing in Hobart. Plus thanks to Vita I've gotten to learn about the joy of feuilletine, aka waffle offcuts basically. So crunchy and delicious. Here's how Vita works, in a nutshell: 1. head in any time between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week 2. grab a cup (even the cups and spoons are stunning?) 3. fill cup with one or more (up to six) flavours of froyo on offer (I highly recommend the dairy free coconut--yes ok I know it's not technically yoghurt but shut up and taste the magic) 4. cover froyo in delicious wonderful toppings like the sweetest, crispest grapes I've tasted in ages and/or feuilletine and/or white chocolate coated goji berries and/or house-made nutrigrain (breakfast froyo excuse thank you) 5. moment of truth weigh-in: just like on the Biggest Loser but 100% more delicious; $2.90 per 100g I've been in four times now (they opened last Monday; don't judge me) and I haven't paid more than $10 for my froyo, I don't think. I say "I don't think" because the price has always had $7.50 added to it for a delicious fresh pressed juice, too. Did I not mention the juice? Drink the juice. Though good luck with deciding which flavour juice you'll pick after having used all your decision-making skills on your froyo...
