Hangar Steak and Spiced Cauliflower
Santanu S.

As I consider an overall rating, I am indecisive between a 3 and 4. Dining here on my final night was my Plan B. I was fortunate there was space available at their communal bench because I did not have a reservation. The fact it was by their window was a plus. Unfortunately, their rusty decor meant the table had a large crack at the end where I sat. The menu is very interesting as I had not come across anything similar earlier in the week. The menu offers the option to order small- or large-sized plates of most items. When dining with a group, customers have the option to order several small plates to be shared. As I was dining alone, I chose the large plate of the hanger steak. I was happy to hear the steak would have been cooked medium rare unless I requested something else. I was strongly suggested to order a vegetable dish since these plates do not come with any sides. I chose the spiced cauliflower. While waiting for my order, I was given some spiced nuts. I had to be careful as I could have easily ruined my appetite eating them. Fortunately, my order did not take too long to arrive. Both the steak and the cauliflower were cooked as expected. During my dinner, my waitress had come by at the time I was sipping my wine. I was focus my attention on her as I was putting my glass away. I must have placed it on the crack because a second later it fell on its side with the remaining wine. I did not accept the offer for another glass. Since I would not have finished an entire glass, the wine would have been wasted. As it was my final night, I definitely wanted to have dessert. I ordered the Nemesis cake which is a very delicious chocolate cake topped with a scoop of ice cream. It helped me forget the crack in the table for a brief time. The

I didn't think I would be posting anything from Tasmania yet but business calls and after arriving late in Hobart I was invited to the end of a Tasmanian team dinner at an Argentinean inspired restaurant. I ordered the lamb shoulder and crisp potatoes in cultures cream. I am really sorry I ate the airport food on the way down as the lamb and potatoes were excellent. The company was also excellent and I feel fortunate to meet such fine colleagues.

If this is not a 5 star restaurant, then i don't know what is. Every dish distinctively flavorful and as good as it gets. Be sure to share.

Review Highlights - Frank Restaurant and Bar

The chimichurri sauce was divine on the flank steak and the grilled vegetables had a strong vinegar flavour we loved.

The gin selection is exceptional and there's always a gin of the week, which is a great opportunity to try a gin you may not have encountered before. Society also now makes their own tonic syrup in house, and I believe they're the first place in Hobart to be doing that. ALL THE KUDOS! It's such a special sort of offering and shows how much they care about their drinks. Also back to gin again, Society do gin tasting platters... correct. Half nips of four different gins (be it a Tasmanian platter, an Australian platter or a tailored platter) with a splash of tonic and a garnish to suit each different gin. A really fun way to try a few different variations in one sitting, because gins can be so different! I LOVE GIN! There are always plenty of events happening at Society too, all posted on their facebook, from regular weekly events like Tapas Tuesday to one-off events like fundraiser dinners and spirit masterclasses.

This Thursday was raclette night and they take bookings for the few tables they have for a 6pm or 8pm seating - we booked 8pm but decided to sit on one of the comfy couches. The raclette was delicious and a generous portion of melted and crispy raclette cheese and prosciutto over potatoes with a bit of salad for $15. There is a huge selection of spirits though we had a nice bottle of Cabernet which was also good value.

We were house sitting in Kingston for 2 weeks, so we'd pop into Hobart a few nights a week for some fun. We bar hopped all over the city, but the Telegraph stayed our consistent favorite. Almost every time we paid it a visit, we were in for a wild night. The pub itself it's a moderately large lay out equipped with full bar, kitchen, pool room, and a lengthy outdoor smoking patio with tables. The bartenders were all very friendly and almost instantly took us in as their own. Since we were fresh off the boat from the states, everyone fell in love with our naivety towards all things Aussie not to mention Tassie. We were given a full crash course on proper Aussie drinking. And not only that, all of our travel suggestions wound up coming from the bartenders and local clientele as well! After finishing up our stint in Kingston, we decided to put a little more time in with Hobart and it's surrounding areas. If it weren't for our friends at the Telegraph, we probably would've moved on much sooner. We truly did see the area on a local level, which is the best experience to hope for when traveling. P.S. If a bartender named "Taz" is still working there, you should get to know that man! He's a legend!

On my first visit to Australia, I took a side trip to Hobart. I arrived on the island just before…read moresunset and it was dark by the time I checked into my hotel. I didn't do a lot of research about eateries prior to visiting to Hobart. Instead, I decided to walk around the area and see which places piqued my interest. Walked over to Salamanca Place as there are plenty of restaurants in this area. Along the way I stumbled across Waterman's on my walk through the neighborhood. I was looking for a low-key spot and this fit the bill, so I decided to give a try. Waterman's is a beer bar/pub specializing in craft and small batch brews. Particularly of interest for me were the Tasmanian beer offerings here. The location itself is appealing as it is in an old sandstone building so the interior has a history behind it. The layout of the place consists of a main bar area in which you order your beers and food from. As for seating, there are numerous seating booths here with a wall installation illuminating light. The beers on offer are posted on a board above the bar. There is a nice array of different types of beers to choose from here. You can find the list of what is available currently on their website. In general, beer seems to be a bit more pricey in Australia and this is no different here. Though I like that they offer a smaller size than the standard pint. This is good as it allows you to try more than one beer at a time here. In addition to their beers, the pub has a food menu which includes pizza, schnitzel, brats and pub entrees (Australian name for appetizers). For dinner here, I decided to get a Bah Bah pizza ($15.90) and paired it with a 10 ounce Van Dieman Stout ($8). The stout is a dark brew and it was on the bitter side. More so than I was expecting. But fortunately the pizza helped to cope with the bitterness. The pizza portion size was huge and filling. And it had an interesting combination of ingredients including slow cooked lamb, dukkah, roasted pumpkin and feta. The lamb was tasty and had a sausage like texture. As a whole, the flavors of the pizza really go well together. Dukkah is something I have never seen before on a menu. Turns out it is a spice mix which reminds me of spices like cumin and turmeric. If you like Mediterranean food, I think you will enjoy this as it is like eating a pizza version of a gyro. If you are looking to try out different varieties of Tasmanian beers in one place while in Hobart, Waterman's is a good place to check out. I recommend getting one of the pizzas here to pair with the beer as they are sizable and delicious.

This place is just up the street from the open air market they have, so it was the perfect spot. There is both an inside area and an outside area in the back. They have plenty of games to play and a lively atmosphere, but perhaps the best treat is that men's urinals are built into a wall with one-way mirrors, so you can actually see the folks in the outside area and enjoy them having a beer right across from where you are standing. That alone was worth the price of the beer!
