Reservations seem to be two seatings, 5:30 and 7:30. We were in the 5:30 sitting and it was packed. It's a very cozy vibe as it's simulating being on the inside of an old ship. I liked the vibe and it was fun to look around as we ate to see all the decorations. Creative. For dinner I had the batter fried prawns. I got the main (not entree) version and I got 9 shrimp. Yikes, it was a ton to eat, plus side of salad and couscous. Really liked my meal, although I wished I had got the smaller entree version. Staff worked well as a team. read more

A great atmosphere surrounding the sea, pirates and the maritime. The food tasted great. Service was quick. Now for my negatives:- - They only allowed a handful of set booking times e.g. First Sitting 5:00pm/5:15pm or second sitting 8:00pm/8:15pm/8:20pm no other. No you can't book for 6:30pm - I ordered the special red snapper. I expected the whole fillets. I was served 1/2 or 1/3 or 1 fillet. When you order fish normally you get the entire fillet. For $32 Its a bit of a rip off - They only had a few items not seafood which my kids had the vegetarian pasta, the only other options were chicken or ridiculously priced beef medallions A few things were great but it was hit and miss as you can see. Absolutely a dissappointing dining experience! 1. Did not have a server even speak to us until 15 minutes after being seated. 2. Asked for a recommendation on whiskey, they had decent sized list, and specifically didnt want a peaty whiskey. What do I get, but a peaty whiskey. 4. Food took a hour to get out. 3. This restaurant has the best fish I have ever eaten. It is called Stripey Trumpeter, from the waters of Hobart area. I have eaten fish in Istanbul, Vancouver, Osaka, and several other top places, this special fish was clearly the best. Flakey, delicious, a real savory flavor. It did come with something on the plate, but I forget what. All I can remember is that amazing taste. The fillet was generously sized too. The Tasmanian oysters were also top notch. Superior to anything from North America, and competitive with Taiwanese oysters. The Tasmanian salmon was also superior. On the less that perfect side was the swordfish. It was substantially over cooked, and quite dry. In terms of decor, the nautical theme is fun, but the overhead lights are too strong on the table. Need to be dimmed slightly. The service a little slow to start but changed to very good after we ordered. Maybe they were just giving us time to choose something. The drinks were fine. Overall, we specifically flew to Hobart to eat at the Drunken Admiral based on its reputation, and the fabulous Stripey Trumpeter filet there make the visit amazing and very memorable. The Drunken Admiral is a seafood restaurant located in the Hobart CBD near the docks. Restaurant interior has an interesting nautical theme which makes you feel like you are below deck of a large maritime boat. The food menu has an array of seafood menu items to choose from including fresh Tasmanian oysters, fried seafood, grilled seafood and seafood pots. Since I had yet to have any "shrimp on the barbie" on my trip to Australia, I decided to opt for the Yachtie's Seafood Mixed Grill. BTW, the term "shrimp on the barbie" is not really a thing in Australia. While waiting for my meal, I decided to get a bottle of Gillespie's Alcoholic Ginger Beer which is made locally in Tasmania. It was quite expensive at $10.50 a bottle, but the ginger beer was really delicious and strong in ginger flavor. Just wish it wasn't so pricey. When the Yachtie's Seafood Mixed Grill arrived, it was partially cooked. That is because the seafood are served on an oven fired stone. You will need to turn the seafood skewers around to finish cooking. The dish came with one skewer each of blue eye, scallops and shrimp along with a side salad and a bowl of fries. Make sure that both sides of the skewers have turned color before eating to avoid foodborne illness. Preferably they should have grill marks. The mixed grill was alright. I liked the scallops the best as they were nice and tender. The blue eye was okay. This is a chunky type of fish that I didn't really like the texture all that much. The side salad was typical, while I thought the fries were fine. The fries portion was quite generous though. Considering the meal was almost $40, I thought the seafood grill was a bit pricey for what it was. If you are looking for a seafood restaurant with good ambiance, The Drunken Admiral is a decent spot. The nautical theme of the place also seems quite family friendly. Though I think the food and drinks are a bit pricey and would rather go to a more casual seafood dining spot like the lower level of Mures if I am going to eat this type of fare again. read more

We dined at the Drunken Admiral last night and what a restaurant. The heavily ship themed restaurant was a hit with our 5 yr old and all the other kids and adults that were there. The booths and nooks were nice and private also. The staff were very helpful and friendly and helped with any questions we had. I had the fish of the day, hubby had the fish market tasting platter and my son had option 3 which had fish, calamari, prawns crumbed prawn chips and salad. Safe to say we were all very happy with our meals and fell into a food coma after forcing it all down as it was so good! We finished off with dessert. Didn't need it but it was still delish. Its not often where I can really enjoy a good quality meal + good service at a restaurant in Hobart but both my partner and I can really say that we do here! It's not only the beautiful seafood but the service and warming atmosphere. Last night the both of us got to enjoy a beautiful meal and without joke, we made a bet on how long the food would take to come out. My partner saying less than 10 minutes and I being in doubt that surely it would take a little longer but amazingly and not really that surprised (as we've come here before ) it only took 7 minutes. 7 minutes for 2 main meals!! Unbelievable! I highly recommend this place though it is quite pricey ranging between $35-40 for a main. So if you do come here, be prepared to pay good money for good food. Visited this place for dinner, just a notice make sure you put in a reservation. We had the oysters, the ones with Tabasco Sauce and Garlic and Coconut Prawns as starters, both are highly recommend. For mains we tried the Chowder and the Sultan's Wok. The portion sizes were good and the service was quick. Chowder has huge chunks of fish in it, but chowder soup itself is delicious. Olive loaf has no actual olives but was a delicious loaf of fresh baked bread. That's where our dinner started and should have ended. Everything else we had was improperly prepared. First time in Tasmania, first time at the Drunken Admiral. The nautical ambience was nice. I was with my wife, daughter, and son-in-law all fish loving, adventurous eaters. Not being a fish person was challenging, but our waitress, Eliza, was wonderful. She guided me to an excellent choice for dinner. I had a taste of everyone's food. It all was fresh tasting and delicious. Our waitress also helped me choose an excellent and reasonably priced whisky, Sullivan's Cove Double Cask Whisky. All in all it was an excellent experience. We just popped in for a small bite and it was a disappointing experience. I choose the crispy chicken entree and my partner had the hot rock salmon. The chicken was dreadful. Two pieces, roughly half a chicken breast pounded flat, breaded and deep fried until the it was dry and crispy. Aptly named I suppose. And that's all there was for $20. Loved the kitsch, and as other reviews have pointed out, this frivolity can lead you to expect mediocre food. We found it to be much better than expected. The prawn cocktail entree my wife and I split had 7 large prawns and were delicious, but peel-your-own. We also split a seafood platter with squid, shrimp, scallops, and barramundi that grills on a hot plate at your table. Also, great lemon, lime and bitters! read more

If you're a fan of a kitschy theme that pulls no punches, you will love this joint. With a genuinely fun novelty theme and a great location on the Hobart waterfront, this place could actually get away with crappy food, but they weren't serving it up. Deciding to make the most of the local produce I got grilled scallops with fries, and ended up with a HUGE plate of crispy fries and no less than 24 plump, creamy scallops. I'm not normally a fan of scallop roe, but the roe on these babies were like little scallop foie gras. So good. read more

Decor is nautical, portions are HUGE (i.e. American, not European-sized), food was well-prepared. There is a variety of seafood, and I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of ingredients and careful preparation. I ordered salmon and it was cooked perfectly and presented well. Overall, if you are interested only in food, this is a great option, and I believe they even had a few options for non-seafood eaters. My only complaint is that it smelled a bit musty in there- like you were actually on a ship. I guess that is OK if you're into that, but combined with the fishy odor it was rather unappetizing. Also, another patron shot a buttery crab claw at my husband when it slipped out of her seafood cracker. Obviously projectile claws are not the restaurant's fault, but they also did not retrieve it during the duration of our meal. It was kind of gross, lying there under our table. Seems like, for a seafood restaurant serving whole crabs, employees could keep a careful eye out for errant ground crabs and the worn-out crackers which cause them. read more

This is an excellent restaurant on the Hobart waterfront. The food is great, the service is outstanding (these waiters and waitresses would easily make a fantastic living if Australia went to a tip system - not advocating, just sayin'). I had the "famous" seafood stew which was unbelievable. My only note of caution is that, if you go with the stew, don't get a hearty entree (appetizer). I had a bowl of the chowder (which was also great) but, as a result, only got through half the stew. Judging from what I saw other people eating, I would say that is true of most of their meals. They seem to have a good wine list and a good selection of spirits. Beer list a tad limited. Prices are comparable for an up-market but not overly expensive restaurant. About $A30 for main meals which is high mid-range for Hobart. read more

The wot pot has a reasonable volume, and I wasn't able to finish it because I was too full. They then let me take the rest home, really friendly!!!! We had a great night and the decor here is pretty cool... its like entering a ship as soon as you walk in the front door.... loads of nautical memorabilia and a real nautical theme. Food was good but a little overdone on the garlic in the Mussels - Chowder is a MUST HAVE, one of the best i have ever eaten! All of the dishes served with fries were fairly generous, and best of all the fries were NOT cooked in the same oil as the seafood - hence no fishy taste to them! read more

For me, there is not much that beats a good seafood chowder, but good seafood chowders are rare. The Admiral's chowder was awesome. I made a quick meal of the chowder plus Vienna loaf kicked off with a Bloody Mary Oyster Shooter. Sadly I won't be back to test more of the menu in the near future. The food was backed up by a friendly and highly competent staff and speedy service. The decor is a mater of taste but for me the nautical theme-almost-in-disneyland is a winner when you are on the Hobart waterfront. read more
