We kicked off our first meal in Hobart with a focus on seafood. Blue Eye was located at the end of Salamanca Market in a modern space with both indoor and outdoor seating. Lots of seafood options to pick from but there was one sirloin option for meat eaters and one vegetarian pasta. Afternoon oyster orgy (aka happy hour) was offered everyday from 3-5pm and the oysters were a great deal at half price. The six we ordered were large and fresh and came with a red wine mignonette. Other places charged extra for anything other than plain lemon wedges with their oysters. The fish of the day was a blue eye fillet which was a thick white fillet and with a very nice creamy sauce. The broccolini was perfectly cooked and one of the best in a long time. Potatoes rounded out the plate and were a good complement. Seafood linguine was served with a generous amount of shrimp, calamari, fish and scallops. Pasta was al dente. For dessert we finished off with their sticky toffee cake with a scoop of caramel ice cream. It brought back memories of our first one last year and was a satisfying end to dinner. Booked over a month in advance and twice confirmed the availability of seared scallops. A week and a half before the booking I again confirmed scallops available seared NOT CRUMBED. Arrived to an over heated cramped place where we were stuffed in a corner. After checking the menu I located scallops, crumbed! I was then told by a very rude little person that she only had crumbed nothing else. There was no remorse no apology. In a day and age where customer service is becoming a dirty word this experience took that to a whole new level. We did find fresh seared scallops but that is another review. Don't risk the poor service and disrespect offered at Blue Eye. There are several superior offering out there. Was prepared to spend way more money than is clearly nessessary at this resturant, instead I will now be able to advise all my travelling colleagues to avoid this regrettable disappointment. read more

Blue Eye Seafood is located in Hobart, Tazmania Australia serving up some of the finest seafood off the coast of mainland Australia. The restarant is located downtown off the harbor adjacent to the University. We came in during a weekday for lunch and it was fairly crowded looking for some fresh Australian Oysters! We heard from a taxi driver that this place does oysters right so we decided to give it a try! We were greated by the hostess and seated promptly. For drinks we ordered all draft Aussie beers and wow they were so smooth and crisp but yet satidying. For our dishes we ordered fresh raw oysters as well as baked oysters with a nice basil garlic butter on top. Both dishes came out fairly quick and they were everything i could dream of when slurping the raw oysters. They were very sweet and succulent while the fresh lemon wedge and hot sauce did the job by complementing them perfectly. We also ordered a fish a chip dish which was quite satisfying. The fish was flakey and deep fried golden to perfection. The chips were steak cut and had just the perfect amount of lt salt to it. Our other appetizer was sashimi and wow this dish was great! The fish melted in my mouth and had the perfect snap back when eating it. I added just the right amount of soy sauce with a tad hint of wasabi and the dish was very satisfying. Blue Eye Seafood is a great place to dine in and have some local seafood from the oceans from the land down under! They have happy hour specials serving up great dishes and drinks at a affordable price. The views and location were perfect as long as all the workers who provided second to none customer service. Wow the yelp reviews of this place are all over the map. But we found that it was really a wonderful place. After a recommendation from our really excellent hosts here and also looking at some other review sites we decided to give it a try. In a word, maybe the ownership or something has changed but, we loved it. It's a nice casual spot that is a short walk down from the main harbor. We were lucky and it wasn't crowded and the kids got seated quickly. The menu is filled with local Tasman cuisine which we were happy to try. The Oysters were great and we loved just loved the Blue Eye. That itself was really great. We also liked the local wines and they were a great treat. The pasta's were also quite good and the kids loved the fish and chips! read more

I have just died and gone to heaven... most amazing sashimi and icecream that i have had in a long time! And the blue eye is really really good (seasonal dish). Ok, so this may not be the cheapest place to have seafood in Hobart (although dinner for two with bread, wine, 2 starters, shared main and shared dessert was only $145), but the service is excellent, and the quality amazing. We got a last minute booking, on a Saturday evening. Service was excellent, our waitress recommended the wine and was very friendly and attentive. We had a great experience! read more

My husband and I have this thing called The Quiet Finger*, reserved for food that is so good that there's no talking to distract from it, just eating. Hence the "shhh" esque finger symbol. Blue Eye scored The Quiet Finger from us tonight. After being on the road all day, with no proper meals, and our first night in Hobart we were keen for some great seafood and that's just what we got. Chowder and light fluffy Fish Cakes to start with, then a mix on the standard seafood platter due to my GF dietary requirements, inability to choose, and a very helpful waiter. Our special platter included generous pieces of trevally, salmon and boar fish, jewel-like scallops, mussels, paella, seafood skewers, complemented with light salad, broccollini, and a good amount of really good chips. Not so many chips that they take over, but I do wish I had a couple of chips less so I could eat more fish. If you are looking for a seafood restaurant in Hobart, look no further. Every dish we ate at Blue Eye was unbelievable. I personally am not a fan of seafood platters when served as cold or hot plates. However, when we ordered the seafood platter which was a bit pricey (around $99), each item on it was simply delicious. Trust me when I say this that it is worth every penny. Also order their cod fritters even if you don't like cod, because its tasty. And don't forget to order their Thai Fish Cakes which simply melt in your mouth. No dry eyes tor two at Blue Eye. Blue Eye is also known as Trevalla but here it is more a trevail. This is a cute place right on the wharf with a nice view and comfortable seating both in the main dining room with tablecloths or the front room with wood tables as well as outdoor seating which is subject to the wind coming off the harbor. The hostess was terse and and was as enthusiastic to help as a flayed flounder. Okay, we had no reservation on a Thursday night at 6:15, but a half empty place should have engendered a warmer "Welcome to Blue Eye, and of course we will find you a nice table". (That would have been at Smolt up the street). It's certainly acceptable if a hostess explains that the house will be full but that a table can be yours for 1 1/2 hours. (So, shovel it in. No problem). Here, all we got was a sigh and a "Just a minute" for five minutes while a six top became a two and four top. Fine. "Could we have that table by the window if we promise to eat like we had a plane to catch or chew like chipmunks?" "No this is your table and that's your only option. Take or leave it." Yes, boss. Should I be made to feel like I am doing them a favor to leave my Pensioners fixed income there? Does a server argue with a another server in the dining room about slowing the service because the kitchen is slammed? You decide. The bread course ($7 extra) was simply sour dough, made off-site by others, comes with a little cup of Salsa Verde. "Could I try the Aioli as well?" "No", was the clipped reply, "You only get one". Okay, I didn't come to be charmed. I came for killer seafood. The Main Platter for two contains Mussels, Oysters Kilpatrick, Battered Fish, a Blue Eye filet, a small Salmon steak, breaded Scallops, Baby Shrimp, Chili Squid, and Octopus. That hit all the high notes...on paper. The Mussels with a cream sauce that was beginning to congeal were just okay. The Oysters Kilpatrick with diced chorizo, garlic and a splash of white wine and lemon were still warm when delivered and both oysters got passing marks. The Battered Fish should have gone to a shelter. Both pieces had passed their prime time just out of the fryer and had been waiting around cooling their jets before delivery. The one Blue Eye filet was decent but nothing spectacular. The small Salmon steak had gone a click too long in the over or carry-over had carried it over the done just right line. Same with the Scallops. They should have gone right from the fryer to the plate to the table. Alas, they too circled the airfield before landing. No real complaints about the Shrimp, but they were just shrimp (just a quick turn in the pan and then stacked up) and nothing to write home about, so I am writing you about them. The Chili Squid had the right idea but they were cold and as chewy as a dog toy. The Octopus was Octo-Chewing gum and most of those pieces were still clinging to the plate when the bill came. The Main Platter comes with a small cup of Tartar Sauce as well as the aforementioned Salsa Verde. Now, recall, if you will, the conversaton reagarding the extra cup of Aioli with the $7 bread service to which I was told "Nyet". What if I had asked for a little extra Salsa Verde or Aioli to go with my $100 Main Platter? It's a small thing but it makes a big difference in the dining experience. It makes the difference between a second chance and a 2 star rating on Yelp. The fish all sat on top of nicely done plain green beans and broccolini spears. A coffee cup of salad greens fit for feeding a pet bunny without so much as a radish joined the party. The cup of French Fries, thin and crisp were very nice with a tiny cup of Ketchup but as was said I didn't come for vegetables and spuds. If I wanted that I could have had dinner with Mum in her flat...for free. So, here is place, on the water, at a harbor on the sea where the World's best seafood comes from, boasting local caught, fresh seafood and for the same $100 I could have gotten the same quality meal in Shawnee Mission, Kansas, maybe even better there. In fact, I had better seafood in the Outback. If the kitchen is so overwhelmed, maybe the answer is another line cook. Fish is difficult to do right on a good day and here the fish all finished at different times and some of it had to wait while other componenets of this heroic platter played catch-up. Blue Eye gets black eye for less than gracious service and lack luster seafood. You want excellent seafood in Hobart? Keep fishing. read more

We originally wanted to come here to dine in, but having looked at the prices it was a little steep. We did spot the takeaway menu, which had mostly the same dishes, but cheaper. So we thought - why not - we have an AirBnB apartment with a proper dining table and all the utensils and plates! We had the seafood basket, which was pretty good. Overall 3.5 We had a mussels special in a warm gazpacho that was the star of the night Bread with garlic butter was delicious I had the fish special in some rice. Reflecting on my first experience at Blue Eye earlier this week makes me feel a little like a judge on MasterChef. Blue Eye, we definitely had some high points that evening. But we had some low points as well, didn't we? You started with half a dozen oysters, half natural (with lemon, of course) and half cooked with garlic butter. Those were a hit, for sure. So fresh and delicious! The steamed Spring Bay mussels, those were tender and tasty as well--but I personally would have liked to see a little more than two tiny slices of sourdough to soak up all that delicious garlic and dill cream at the end. The entree picked off the special board, the seared scallops with pork belly and spicy BBQ sauce? Well, the scallops held up their end of the deal, but that pork belly was too. dry. Not even the thick sauce could save it. Then we had the mixed grill plate. The crunchy chips and really lovely squid weren't enough to save the plate from the two dry pieces of fish (white fish, sure, but why would you do that to beautiful Tassie salmon? Why?) and the "iceberg salad". Let's get real: that was a chunk of iceberg lettuce, that's all. What a pity. Luckily the final dish came out and saved the night. That lemon and orange creme brulee was a real treat, a crispy sugar lid on top of a zesty sweet custard treat that was just a stunner. We won't talk about the ridiculously small scoops of ice-cream that we ordered separately because we wouldn't want this all to end on a sour note. Except that we have to. Sorry, Blue Eye--it's off to the elimination round for you, and I'm just not sure when I'll be ready to film that episode. read more

The pie itself was good, but the vegetables around it taste weird and didn't fit well with it. Still a nice place to have a dinner with friends or families. read more

We arrived with a party of six and we had the last reservation. Service was slow (we had to find the server to help along service) and the food was okay. Luckily we had the opportunity to spend a half day on bruny island and had some oysters as they were completely out. The sashimi was good, but the rest was so so. One of my travel mates said this was rated hogly on trip advisor. I think we could have done better. It may very well be that we are spoiled with the world class service and food quality already achieved in Chicago. I would not revisit, unfortunately. read more

Given that they are highly recommended locally, I was shocked to find that they have terrible service here. They are extremely rude to their customers who haven't made bookings, which I witnessed while waiting ages for my food. We had a 7:00 reservation, and told upon arrival that we had to be out by 8:30. They didn't deliver our food to the table until 7:45, and they forgot one of our dishes. We didn't realize because we were so focused on getting out by 8:30, but we paid for said scallops as well. Great food, but the service just doesn't make it worth going in my opinion. read more

Food way over priced for what you actually get. Ordered the Surf n Turf. The only prawn was dry and stale with a few pieces of squid. Asked for the scotch fillet to be medium rare and received its barely cooked. Complained to the waitress and she asked me to remove the items from the scotch fillet to put on a separate plate to take to the kitchen instead of taking the entire dish. Came back with it after being obviously microwaved. Absolutely disgusted will never go here again and will not recommend it to anyone. read more

For the TL;DR: great clean food for people who like seafood, and also chips. I will preface this with my personal bias: I used to work for the couple who own this restaurant, but that in itself is a compliment - I worked with the owners in their first restaurant and catering business for around 5 years and the reason I stayed so long, apart from the excellent working conditions, my personal liking for the owners, and the fun, was the food. The food kept me much too fat but very happy. I had the opportunity to eat lunch here twice recently, and I can't wait to go again this week with my son. I don't go out in the evenings much now that I'm a mother, so I can't speak from experience there, but lunch time at Blue Eye is great. Blue Eye offers a lunch special of two courses for $25. There's a variety on the set lunch special menu, so even the fussiest can find something, and the fact that it is a lunch special doesn't compromise the quality. I always feel suspicious when I see the words 'lunch special' when I pass Indian restaurants, but the lunch special here is top notch. No aspersions on Indian restaurants. Ordering from the regular menu is an exercise in making difficult choices. You may want to eat everything. I know I did. I settled for three dishes last time - two entrees and a shared main. The chowder, the sashimi, and the octopus. But I wanted grilled salmon, and the beer battered fish, and the squid, and the thai fish cakes. I shouldn't want thai fish cakes because I've eaten so many of them in my life that I may actually haven been a thai fish cake at one stage if the maxim 'you are what you eat' is at all true. The kitchen presents food that is clean, fresh, wholesome, and delicious - you'll feel like you've just done something virtuous as well as eating something tasty. If you want some seriously tasty naughtiness, the chips out of that kitchen will keep you fat for years. The cooking fat is that awesome vegetable no cholesterol stuff that gives you the happy illusion that you can have a second plate of crumbed squid. Also - the outdoor seating is great, the wait staff are super, and the decor is really interesting - lots to look at, some of it you may also want to eat. Well, although it was a Monday evening, as soon as we were sat down at our reserved table, I had a bad feeling about this place... Firstly, the decore was very, very amateurish with the wall decorations... Then to have the straw that broke the camels back, we were sat next to a young family with a screaming child..... Nothing worse when you want a nice quiet romantic dinner........ So end our pleasant dinner before it starts...... Never to return...... read more

First restaurant we ate at in Hobart. Mussel entree was superb. The fish platters were certainly plentiful and represented some fine Tasmanian seafood. i made a booking for last Thursday evening for 6pm.On arrival i asked the rude lady behind the desk if we could sit outside,and she replied yes but would have to be out at 7.30 as they had another booking.M y party of 4 were happy with that.We were seated and greeted by another rude person ,the waiter who was rude and sarcastic.My partner and i ordered a dozen oysters kilatrick.,when they arrived we only got 11.I complained to the waiter we only got 11 and he replied the chef was having a very bad day and offered to bring out 1 more oyster which never appeared.We were still charged the full amount.The scallops for main course were very ordinary.At 7.30 exactly the bill was placed on the table ,not very politely.We were not asked if we would like dessert or coffee.We are locals and have looking forward to trying blue eye for a long time but will never come back again.I hate to think what tourists would think. read more
