I never would have called myself a frozen yoghurt fan so I didn't bother stopping in at any of them, but marvelled at the sheer number of them. (Like, more than two.) So I said I never would have called myself a frozen yoghurt fan, I know. But then my favourite babes at Ethos decided to open their own froyo bar, in proper Ethos ethos. This means not just delicious food but beautiful food. Not just beautiful food but local food. Sourced locally or made in house, everything about Vita is in true Ethos fashion and therefore my new favourite thing in Hobart. Plus thanks to Vita I've gotten to learn about the joy of feuilletine, aka waffle offcuts basically. So crunchy and delicious. Here's how Vita works, in a nutshell: 1. head in any time between 8am and 8pm, seven days a week 2. grab a cup (even the cups and spoons are stunning?) 3. fill cup with one or more (up to six) flavours of froyo on offer (I highly recommend the dairy free coconut--yes ok I know it's not technically yoghurt but shut up and taste the magic) 4. cover froyo in delicious wonderful toppings like the sweetest, crispest grapes I've tasted in ages and/or feuilletine and/or white chocolate coated goji berries and/or house-made nutrigrain (breakfast froyo excuse thank you) 5. moment of truth weigh-in: just like on the Biggest Loser but 100% more delicious; $2.90 per 100g I've been in four times now (they opened last Monday; don't judge me) and I haven't paid more than $10 for my froyo, I don't think. I say "I don't think" because the price has always had $7.50 added to it for a delicious fresh pressed juice, too. Did I not mention the juice? Drink the juice. Most of the dishe I recognize, but there were chef twist s and innovation to elevate it. For example, the use of flash grilled squid to mimic a Ramen noodle dish and using slices of ox on a skewer to mimic a kebab. For the finale they used ingredients. I normally don't like, but they reinvented it. For example, for the pallet cleanser, they used a charred marshmallow and topping it with seasoned salt, which plays with savory and sweet. The dessert was white chocolate, which I never like, except in this case. In the end we managed to get an Irish pub in the city. When we turned up, it was a case of taking a look, shuddering and going 'Great. What now?' Thankfully, one of us had the temerity to ask the staff there where there was something a bit... Nicer. They recommended the Pumphouse just up the road. We walked up and to our delight, found a really nice, clean hospitable environment with a spacious aesthetic. Sitting next to the window we ordered some drinks. I ordered a mojito (a fond favourite from my time in Northern Italy) and it was quite nice, slightly too sweet for me but from my experiences with mojitos, it was a good one. I just don't have a sweet tooth so I prefer the more limey ones as opposed to the more sugary ones. Only a minor quibble. We then started ordering our dinner. I decided on the wallaby porterhouse (medium rare) with chimi churri and pangrattato ($17) and a side smashed potatoes with herb salt. ($9) It was amazing but the very small serve of wallaby was not great value for $17. When you say 'porterhouse', you usually think of a nice thick steaky chunk of meat not a half palm slice of meat. The flavours were just right and the aoili-style condiment with the meat went down very nicely with the smashed potatoes which were (I suspect) double fried to perfection. Golden, crunchy exterior with a lovely soft buttery inside. The only reason it didn't deserve a five star review in my opinion was the meat came alone. If it was a super-posh place that serves each dish alone, well, fine, be all wanky and all that but this was just an upper-class pub. With your multiple bun gao options (still no combination, but I guess I can make do with having to choose between spring rolls, lemongrass beef and sugarcane prawns, when push comes to shove). Your bun gao prices are nothing to be scoffed at and the meal itself was exactly what I'd been missing. Like, literally, I had been missing the exact meal you dished up for me. I almost wept as I drizzled the little container of fish sauce over my salad. I'll be back before you know it, Sapa Rose.
