Does anyone eat the cookies here?? My husband and I have tried them twice, once about a year ago and then again tonight, and they are awful!! Why did try the cookies again? We thought somebody just messed up the recipe that night, so we tried them again. Bad idea.I know this place is know for their donuts, and they have always been wonderful, but their cookies are terrible! They taste like they have way too much baking soda in them ,which makes them have a weird salty taste to them,and the chocolate chip cookies have hardly any chocolate chips at all, which makes them all the much worse. I write this post to bring the attention to the owners that they really need to change the recipe for those cookies, we will not touch those again. I love this little donut shop in Lawrence! To be honest, I really love all donut shops in general. One of the best things about Munchers is the hours of operation. Muncher's is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Donuts all the time! The hours are great for all types of customers - college students after a night at the bar, families out for Saturday morning donuts and retirees. I'm a big fan of donuts but I'll admit that I usually stick to the basics - twists, glazed, and chocolate long johns. Munchers doesn't disappoint with any of those! I recently tried the "butterfly" which was described to me as a variation of a cinnamon roll but without frosting. It's one of my new favorites. Muncher's Bakery is a hard review for me to write, because I so badly want to love it, but I fear that under honest scrutiny it just might not hold up. I find myself returning, time and again, yet I know that there are so many things to potentially not like about his place. So what's to like? Cream cheese donuts. The cream cheese donuts are wickedly delicious and rather large -- a single donut is enough to satisfy. And, they're open 24 hours a day, so the promise of a hefty, moist cream cheese donut can become especially tantalizing in the early morning hours. There isn't a lot of choice in Lawrence for late-night treats, but Munchers is definitely capable of fulfilling this niche. I was careful to specify above that the donuts I was talking about were "cream cheese" donuts. This is because the rest of their donuts and other baked goods are only at par or less. The majority of their other baked goods are utterly plain. They are best described by complete lack of superlatives. They are unmemorable and hovering just below adequate. The interior of Munchers isn't much to look at, nor does it need to be, but it can feel a tad unkept. They accept only cash, which can be a damper if you're prone to using only plastic. And another make problem is that if you plan on visiting during the later hours of their 24 hour service, you're most likely to find a picked-over selection of dried out donuts and (surprisingly often) no cream cheese donuts to be found. So, where does this leave me? I keep going back, even though I need to scrounge up cash each time, even though they don't have anything fresh during the majority of their open hours, even though most of their products are squarely unimpressive. For whatever reason, I often find myself at Muncher's. I know I should care about all the knocks against it, but there's something about this place that defies the rating that it "should" get (and the rating I do give it). Review: 2.5 stars. read more

Sounds like most reviews are pretty consistent with Munchers. KU's late night & early riser (that's me) student's desperately need another option besides Java Break and Anshutz Library (Su-Th only). Whoever figures this out will be basking in glory and cash. Can someone.......anyone in Lawrence come up with a business plan that feasibly makes sense to cater the overnight crowds? Lawrence is awash with drunks, public safety officers, health care workers, the common working man, and students that would greatly patronize a business such as Munchers that offered a clean inviting environment with food and drink to boot. Throw in some free WiFi along with an updated casual interior and you have a money maker GUARANTEED!@#Q! Java Break had/has this opportunity but insist on squandering it away. The pastries at Munchers aren't Lamar donut/Dunkin donut quality. But, they could be awfully close. Having tasted their fresh from the oven/fryer goods tells me that Munchers is on to something here. Yea, the late night offerings are a bit stale and dry. What do you expect? They been sitting around for hours because the demand doesn't require they make anything fresh throughout the day. You best believe that if Munchers did a 180 and changed some things about their business, their numbers would take off. Again, their product isn't terrible by any means. Big question here: How can a donut/pastry shop not brew fresh coffee throughout the day? I mean seriously, every time I go in Munchers the coffee carafe's are empty and clouded over as if they haven't been washed in days. When they do have coffee, it's warm and mediocre at best. Not demanding specialty quality coffee or top notch Barista's. But there is no excuse not to provide a decent grade of fresh hot coffee for the customers. The furniture in Munchers makes my grandmothers house look contemporary. Are you freakin serious? Take out the dated furniture and throw a fresh coat of paint on the walls and you're in business. Robert Irvin from Restaurant Impossible would have a field day with Munchers. Oh yea, throw in some modern light fixtures and update the 20+ year old light bulbs. Sweep the floor and clean the glass cases. Last but not least.......install a credit card processor and stop worrying about merchant fee's and get with the times Munchers! Was told cinnamon rolls here were excellent. Made a 20 minute trip and all they had available was glazed donuts. Literally nothing else aside from full size cakes. I give munchers a 3 starts because all of the good times we've hand but I've been seeing its darker side lately. A couple months ago I decided to treat my siblings to this wonderful place only to end up not getting anything upon seeing a cockroach in the display! The cashier seemed unfazed while we were clearly disturbed to find this. Recently I've been steering away from munchers partly because of construction but mostly because the past two time I've gone there has been a lack of donuts. For a 24/7 donut place I dont expect everything to be fully stocked all the time but at least have some type of donut or cinnamon roll around 7pm, which isn't such an odd hour. On the bright side their coffee is surprisingly good despite being 75¢ coffee. Its not burnt, its not fancy, just right. And their cream filled stuff is pretty decent too, even though I find most of what they have to be to bland for me. I would usually get an eclair and a pudding ball. And this place never closes, even in a snow storm haha! My first year of college I'd frequent this place once a week at 2am. And they still had a wide variety of thing to pick, or at least most nights. I don't know what has changed but I do hope they took care of whatever roach problem they were having. read more

Munchers has a relatively positive reputation upholding it. It's chock-full of nostalgia and old-time charm for the aging Lawrence population. My dad is included in this demographic, so I was raised around fond opinions of this bakery. So what went south? There are a lot of things wrong with Munchers. My existing good impression of Munchers won out over the negative experiences over the last five years or so, but my most recent visit turned that around real fast. First, as other reviews have mentioned, the customer service has never been something to swoon over. Maybe the 30something disgruntled employees (never more than one or two working at a time) add to the dive-y facet, but being greeted with blank stares and obvious annoyance tends to kill an appetite. Second, cash or check only. It's 2016. Come on. Third, the place is dirty: dust, stains, broken bathrooms, etc. Anyway, I went in tonight for, y'know, donuts. Same old Munchers, hasn't changed since dinosaurs walked the earth. Except, hold on, there's not a single donut in the main display. This is the exact conversation that went down: "Hey! No donuts?" "Nope." "..." I settled on a few eclairs, the only remaining goods in the refrigerated case to the left. There weren't more than half a dozen in there. Now, I'm a college student, and my standards aren't that high. I can get past a lot of bullshit in dumpy bakeries to satiate my lust for empty calories but when a donut shop DOES NOT HAVE DONUTS... I just.. what? The only thing keeping this review from one star is the eclairs and cream puffs- still consistently delicious. BONUS STORY: Went in at 3am once for a donut study-break. The upside was that fresh donuts were just out of the oven and they were utterly heavenly. So delicious. The downside was the middle-aged possibly homeless man clearly on meth or some other horrible drug, rubbing his gums and muttering to himself loudly. He gestured rudely at me and followed me on my way to use the ladies room. Luckily I had an imposing-looking friend with me to get him off my tail, but it was terrifying. This little hole in the wall is a town favorite. Frequented by some people who have lived in Lawrence longer than I have been alive, Munchers Bakery is the best place to find hot and fresh homemade sweets. The bakery is open 24 hrs a day, so it's a great place to find a quite spot to study that isnt the traditional library. If you really want a treat, swing by around 4:00 AM, when they start selling the fresh baked goods. Wednesday after 1:30 is the time to stay away from the place though, as all of the middle school students crowd the place after being released from school early. My review is biased because I'm hopelessly in love with their cream cheese donuts, but nothing else. The interior is kind of dim and grungy, which matches the mediocre caliber of their items. The cinnamon buns are dry. The cookies are overly buttery. The apple fritters taste a lot like the ones that you get at a grocery store (and I would expect more from a bakery); same with the plain glazed/twisted donuts. Other items look (and taste) stale - so be careful what you choose! The cream cheese donuts, on the other hand, are near perfection - crispy edges with a soft, chewy interior, topped with just enough glaze to balance the creaminess with a touch of sweetness - they are to die for. For some reason I love this place. Open 24 hours a day, they have lots of great treats. Part donut store, part bakery. The lady working the front told me this: 1. Owner starts mixing next day's batch at 11 pm. 2. The Baker starts baking at 2am. When they are done at 9am, that's it until 4am the next day. I went into this place this past weekend for a 2am grease fix and found out the cupboards were bare. Didn't want to wait 2 hours for the next round of Munchers to arrive. Check it out. Drove from 30 minutes away on a Saturday evening, about 8pm, to get some donuts for the kids and I. I walked in to a lobby with about 5-7 people who were sitting around chatting. Pretty common I would say. As I looked to the displays I saw ZERO donuts on the shelf. I then thought maybe the folks in the lobby were waiting for donuts being made. I made my way to the front counter and was met by an obviously annoyed worker with a bald head and a full glorious beard (his only positive). He was standing with his arms crossed as if we were all inconveniencing him. He waited for me to speak before acknowledging my presence. I asked the obvious question of "Will more donuts be ready soon?" He smugly said "Not until 4 or 5 am". I looked around the empty display cases and observed approximately 10 mini orange rolls and some cupcakes and cookies, and then returned to the counter and inquired if this was a common occurrence as this was my first visit to the Muncher's Bakery. He smugly stated that yes, this happens often and that the later it gets the less they have. Which is confusing to me because this is advertised as a 24 hour bakery. While I understand that you cannot keep on hand every variety of donut you may offer, I would assume that you would attempt to keep the cream cheese donut in stock since that is what you're known for. I would liken this to IHOP running out of pancakes. It should be noted that while I was in the lobby, approximately 7 people came in during the 2-3 minute period I was in your store also looking for donuts. All were sent away with the same "4-5am" donut availability. I returned to my hometown and went to my local 24 hour donut shop which had an assortment of varieties on the shelf and ready to go. For a bakery, especially a local small business establishment, I expected a lot more. The product is not quality. I visited several times to taste a range of goods, and it was a terrible experience each time. The cookies are well below mediocre. My husband and I ordered one of each cookie over several trips and we could not finish each cookie. They were absolutely horrid - a mouthful of baking soda taste in one, a tasteless dry crumble in another, and it goes on. I visited during the day each time, and always to empty trays and disgruntled employees. I understand that sometimes, you may just be having a bad day - but this was a consistent experience. I also do not understand why there are no products available to purchase during the daytime. I know that this is a college town, but there are a range of people that live here. I am awake and shopping during the day, and found that they were frequently out of my favorite items - croissants (especially the chocolate and plain ones), and sugar doughnuts. The croissants that I was able to purchase on my most recent trip were tough, stale, and almost bland. They went into the garbage and I went instead to Dillon's to purchase to a softer, buttery croissant. I will be making my own chocolate croissants from here on out. My husband loves cinnamon rolls and purchased one of each of their cinnamon roll selections. He walked away with one word: "Meh." A Krispy Kreme Cinnamon Roll was purchased instead from Checkers. I think it says enough that this bakery drives me to purchase goods from another store. They are a one-hit wonder with their cream cheese donuts and MAYBE a couple other items. I asked my boyfriend to go in and get me a cream cheese doughnut, he has not been to munchers before. He does not know the set up, and just asked the man for a cream cheese doughnut. While I'm at work I seen dozens and dozens of people coming to get their favorite doughnuts, they have the best donuts in the city in my opinion anytime that I'm headed out of town or going to see my friend I make sure I bring a dozen of their finest. Visited munchers for the first time at 10pm on a Wednesday. I was surprised to see they were even open! Open 24 hours?! Amazing. The young girl working was so nice and helpful, I asked for recommendations for my first time, tried a pudding ball and a blueberry fritter WOW. You can tell these treats are made with love. Stopped in here on a Saturday afternoon. I tried some of my friend's cinnamon roll and though it was good. The restrooms smelled like cigarettes which was somewhat upsetting. I ordered a mini strawberry but was given a mini cinnamon roll. I also order a apple fritter but it really tasted like just a plain donut and had no chunks of apple of apple flavor. I ordered a a vanilla glazed cream cheese donut but was given a strawberry glazed one. The dough was good but I think there was me t to be cream cheese filling and I only tasted a little bit of it in one corner of the dough but. When I was paying I asked for a recite but they were unable to get me one, although I waited a good minute for them to figure it out.
