For a Friday lunch I stopped by Mumbai Spice, having noticed their small section of Indo-Chinese food. The establishment was almost empty at noon. I ordered the lunch special, Chicken Manchurian ($18). It took 15 minutes to arrive, a bit longer than I expected, but otherwise inconsequential. The Chicken Manchurian came with chicken in a brown sauce (imagine a thick Chinese soy-sauce based pan sauce with some Indian herbs), vegetarian fried rice, one egg roll, and soup. The egg roll and fried rice were inoffensive. The soup seemed a touch earthy, reminiscent of middle eastern lentil soup, albeit saltier. The Chicken Manchurian could have used more Indian spices. The heat came through well, but the spices seemed muted. Overall, I think the lunch special offers a decent variety at the price point (these days). It doesn't satisfy my craving for Indo-Chinese as much as I would like, however. read more

Stopped by here before going to a concert at the BSO and it was a great place to grab dinner. We were seated within 5 min after getting there. They have tables for 1-2 people and a decent amount of space that can accommodate larger parties by combining tables together. When I went, it seemed the restaurant was a bit short-staffed, but we still had great service! We were able to place our order pretty quickly and while the food took a bit longer to come out than normal, the server was so kind in coming up to give us updates and re-fill our water. The ambiance is also great, so I didn't mind a bit of a wait with the beautiful decor and warm atmosphere! We tried the hakka noodles with vegetables and then had Tikka Masala with lamb. If I could give zero stars, I would. My friend and I waited forever to be seated while the staff kept sitting other groups ahead of us -- all of them white. When we were finally seated, we had to ask for water even though every other table was being served right away. After waiting over an hour, our food never even arrived. Meanwhile, the white couple who came in after us got their food quickly, smiling and laughing with the same staff who ignored us. This place clearly doesn't care about people of color. Been a few years since I have visited here. Was going to a concert at Symphony Hall and needed a bite to eat. We were sat promptly, told them server we needed to do done by 7:15. First shout out to the server, she was amazing. She was polite, helpful and made sure the meal moved along. We had pakora and naan for appetizers. Both very tasty. Been here a few times now sometimes with the hubs and sometimes in a bigger group of friends. Good experience every time! Ambiance is nice and they even have a cute outdoor seating in summer and even today when it's a balmy 50 degrees in December! Service is always friendly. I've ordered the pav bhaji multiple times and did so today. I've also had the chicken biryani which the hubs ordered today - it comes with a side of raita. We also ordered the tandoori chicken lollipops. Now these were amazing!!! Omg they were crispy on the outside perfectly juicy and tender on the inside. Really really great! The hubs and I just ate these one after the other and polished them off the plate in no time! Get these if you go for sure!!! They have a number of Indo-Chinese dishes have yet try those although the hubs tried the Hakka noodles before. Vague memory from eating there years ago - I thought the food was well-made, with really pointed flavors that worked well together, and good heat on the dishes. A more recent visit, had the Hakka stir-fry noodle which was less successful; the noodles were both too salty and too sweet ... it tasted like typical lo mein at local Chinese restaurant. Then the chicken tikka masala was more decent ... nice bits of chicken ensconced in a creamy tomato sauce. I would have liked more complexity of flavors in the dish but it was solid. I'm torn between a 3 or 4 star review, but I'll give them the benefit of doubt and go with the higher one. We were really looking forward to some indo-chinese food and that's how we came across Mumbai Spice. They deliver via Uber Eats. Mumbai Spice was still open (around 7 pm). It took over an hour for the food to be delivered, but that's alright. We got the veggie fried rice, the vegetable manchurian gravy, and schezwan potatoes. When we opened the containers, we were very surprised by the potato dish. As you see in the image, it included curry leaves! I'm quite certain they sent us something like potato 65 (which is not even on their menu!) instead of schezwan. However, there was no note with the order that they substituted our dish, which was even more strange. Anyway, the dish lacked salt, so all you could taste was the chili powder, so we didn't really enjoy it. But the fried rice and the gravy from the vegetable manchurian really hit the spot, it was very similar to the tastes back home and what we were expecting. The veggie ball in the manchurian could have been better, but that's a small factor. Overall, I'd try them again when I'm wanting some indo-chinese cuisine. I wouldn't order the potatoes but maybe go for a different dish like chili paneer! read more

Mumbai Spice is a new favorite for me! I've been here twice now, the first time I got chicken biryani and the second time I got chicken tikka masala, butter naan, and samosas. The biryani was slightly had a lot of spices; the yogurt sauce helped cut through that taste and was a good combination. The bowl looked small at first but I had plenty of leftovers to last me another a meal. The tikka masala was even better. It wasn't spicy at all but had a nice creamy flavor, and was amazing with rice and warm butter naan. The samosas were so delicious! I'm craving them right now just remembering them. I also had leftovers from this meal too. My only complaints are that the meat is a little sparse in these dishes, and the restaurant charges an automatic gratuity on tables of 2 and above. The restaurant staff is nice, and the cauliflower dishes are not bad, but most other items are not worth the price. Yes the cost of their items is atrocious ... they charge 15 bucks for a few pieces of spiced cauliflower, and 12 bucks for one piece of vada paav!! If they were a Michelin star, that maybe ok. Importantly, do watch out for their bills, they add a tip even for a party of two. And the receipt mentions a list of tips with % so the customer will have no clue the tip has already been added and will add even more. They are able to get away with this kind of atrocity thanks to the poor student population in Boston that do not have better choices. read more

This is a tale of two restaurants. I went to eat with my daughter. The sign outside the door says their Indo - China food is the best so I tried the Manchurian. The flavor was very mediocre to bad. The waitress recommended lamb and it was very gristly. My daughter had chicken tikka masala and loved it. We both really enjoyed the paani poori. In fact I had to use the spicy tangy water from the paani poori to add flavor to the Manchurian. Also surprising is the dining fee. It's unclear whether it's a flat $7.95 or 10% of the bill, because it doesn't provide any details on your check. I asked about it and they said it was because they did not raise their prices since Covid. I think they should just increase the prices on their menu rather than stick on an extra, unexpected charge. Overall, I would give them three stars, but my daughter said five stars, so this review reflects a compromise and is four stars. read more

I thought that Mumbai Spice was really good! I went in on a Saturday night and got seated right away. First of all, the waitress was SO SWEET. She was so happy to serve us and help us find drinks and dishes that we would like. Definitely the best service I've experienced in a while. For the price, you get a good amount of food, and my boyfriend and I left feeling happy and full. For drinks, we got the boozy mango lassi and tamarind martini. Both were delicious and I would recommend. As for food, we got the peshawary naan, which had a sweet component to it and was very very good. We also got the Andra Hariyali with chicken and Tikka Masala with chicken. Both were really good and had a ton of flavor to them. I personally loved the Andra Hariyali though. It came with rice which was very much appreciated. If you are in the symphony/northeastern area and like Indian food, I would urge you to go here as it's a really convenient place to get some solid Indian food!! read more

Came here with a friend one Tuesday around 6pm. It was pretty empty and quiet, so we got a seat as soon as we entered. They offer hand sanitizer and the place seemed pretty clean. I ordered the Chana Masala and my friend got the Chicken Tikka Masala. We split a Garlic Naan. They gave us one large serving of rice - personally, I would've preferred being given two separate rice bowls because it was a struggle to scoop rice onto our individual plates with our spoons. The garlic naan was great! The Chana Masala was flavorful and full of spices. The waiter there was very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed during our meal. Mumbai Spice was my first indoor dining experience since the COVID pandemic hit the world. With respect to food, not a bad place to move towards the new normal. For those of you driving into the Symphony area, the restaurant validates parking for a short time period in the nearby Whole Foods garage (may want to verify before you go). Water was brought to the table in pitchers for self-serve by guests. My friends and I ordered a few appetizers to share. All of the appetizers we tried (vegetable pakoras, samosas, and chicken kebabs) were on par with the other Indian restaurants I've tried in the Boston area. The chicken kebabs have a good citrus marinade. I ordered the chicken biryani for my entree. Note that the size of the bowl is deceiving - there is more biryani than you would expect. The dish was extremely tasty - the biryani had a nice default level of heat and had a lot of tender pieces of boneless chicken. The biryani is garnished with a hardboiled egg on top and is served with a size of raita. The staff got upset when we asked for separate checks at the end of the meal, so the best we could do was divide the bill evenly into 4 at the end of the meal. So remember to mention separate checks if you want to pay that way at the beginning of the meal. Service during the meal was pretty good though - not too long of a wait for the food and the server gave good recommendations for what to order. read more

The garlic NAAN was AMAZING and the best part of that meal. The other food was good and substantial so I was full by the end of the dining experience. The outdoor dining setting is nice and should be utilized. However, the overall dining experience was significantly influenced by the staff. The staff was not friendly and the entire time we felt like we were being a bother simply for dining in and should leave ASAP. So this is one of the few good South Asian 'Halal' places in Boston area. Food taste is good and the place is very much accessible by public commute. Bus and T both works. The place is great for their Indo-Chinese cuisine. Me and my friends go there all the time when we want some non American 'Indo-Pak' Chinese style food.
