As it says in their intro., the Cafe opened its door back in 1967, during a time of turmoil in Hong Kong, when the city was engulfed in one of the most violent & bloodiest riot. This is also a period that sees most social changes being implemented, as immigrants from China swamped into Hong Kong, the government responded by building Social Housing and other major construction programs. With the population having more disposable income, as jobs are abundant in manufacturing and textiles industries; opportunities abound, many small businesses and entrepreneurs started their venture. Kam Kee is one of those, its main theme is no frills everyday working folks food! Nothing fancy, they also do some Chinese influenced Western dishes, such as Fried Rice baked in different sauces to give the customer something new and yet familiar. This new location also carries Kam Kee's theme of having a retro feel, from the plates, cups, containers etc. all reflected the older Hong Kong. Food is above average in my opinion for this type of restaurants where gimmick can be the main reason for dinners to come in rather then for their food. My Beef & Choi Sum ( Chinese Green ), is a throw back to more simpler times, where basic ingredients made the Mom's way is popular and delicious. The Baked Fish Fillet in Cream Sauce on Fried Rice is also true to its roots, without being too fancy and modern. Stanley Plaza is a tourist area, and to have prices that reflect everyday working folks is a breath of fresh air! Come and enjoy the surrounding and savour the old Hong Kong! See my tip for parking!

I love the Hong Kong afternoon tea time, and I got the french toast (which is deep fried and filled with peanut butter!), pineapple bun with butter (bolo bao), baked pork chop rice in tomato sauce and cheese, and wok fried beef noodles. The french toast and bolo bao were great - decadent and satisfying. The baked pork chop rice had a fresh tomato sauce and a good amount of meat. The beef noodles were the most disappointing, as it lacked that much flavor and tasted like dried noodles. Overall, an okay cha chaan teng experience - and I would recommend their french toast and bolo bao over their hot dishes.

These kind of legacy places have been part of HK for as long as I can remember. Plenty of seating (probably because the other restaurant next to it is closed but the tables are open at the front). This is one of my favourite restaurants in the Hong Kong airport. If my flight is departing on this side of the terminal I will try to have a meal here. The teh tarik here is also pretty good and will order on occassion.

Just typing about it makes me salivate! The spices used in the grilled fish are exactly the type in China that makes your lips go numb after a while. Many places can "cheat" by making the presentation fancy with lots of peppers and cilantro on top when the fish can be small. But this place does not do that and instead serves up a sizable fish. (We had 12 people in our group and we were full.) This place is not cheap but in Hong Kong, you usually get what you paid for. This was one of our best meals on this trip to Hong Kong.

There are so many featured dishes on the menu that it's hard to try them all in one go, and I am definitely coming back to try more. I went with a group of 5, and still felt like there were a ton of dishes we wanted to try but were too full, so would definitely recommend coming here with a big group. The main stars of our meal were the spicy whole fish and Peking duck. I loved the spicy whole fish - you can choose the type of spice, as well as add on a variety of optional ingredients (e.g. Vegetables, tofu) to add to the fish as a sort of side, cooking in the flavorful sauce that comes with it. The fish comes in a huge metal tray with a fire lit under, so it is kept constantly steaming, and is so flavorful and juicy. The Peking duck was also solid. Besides those main dishes, we also ordered a variety of smaller dishes like skewers, vegetables to round out the meal. The place overall felt super hip, with a ton of young people, and I would recommend making a reservation to avoid the long long wait that seems to inevitably come with restaurants HKers collectively decide are trendy. I felt like this restaurant really lived up to its promise implied by its name of Farmer & Fish, serving up variety without sacrificing quality and being confusing.

They will even keep a record of your past visits to make sure that the menu items you had perviously will not be repeated! Highlight items: Assorted Cold Appetizer as you can see from my photo, this has a variety of items, the centre is a mixed salad with julianne of cucumber, mushrooms, black fungus, and pomelo, it is then surrounded by veggie maki sushi roll, thousand year eggs, veggie ham etc. It is served with a light soy & vinegar based dressing, amazingly refreshing and tasty, I believe it is a signature starter that each table will get! And I am sure it will be requested even if they do not offer it in your next visit! The Mushroom & Vegetables Gyoza in Pumpkin Purée, savoury pumpkin surrounds this small package of amazing umami, the natural sweetness of the vegetables are brought to a new hight with the deep flavours of the mushrooms! We ordered 2 different Stone Bowl Rice set menu items. #2 with Eggplant and #4 with Lion's Head Mushroom (I believe called Lion's Mane Mushroom in the US) We liked both dishes including the accompanying Soup and appetizers. The Eggplant dish was savory without being greasy (Unlike most eggplant dishes cooked in a wok). The Lion's head Mushroom was very umami and had the texture and flavor of perfectly cooked beef cubes. Service was fast, friendly and efficient.

The sweet and sour "pork" was a hit for my group. So was the vegetarian sashimi platter, where we all tried to figure out what the mock meat was made of. The "jellyfish" was also really good, and it was interesting that it was in a peanut-flavored sauce. I can't really comment on service other than it seemed quick. There was never a long waiting period in between dishes. I was on vacation with my boyfriend's family, and I don't speak any Cantonese, so they took care of the communication part. I did see an Indian family while we were there, so I'm sure communication should be fine if you don't speak Cantonese. This meal was towards the end of our stay in HK and it's a good meal to cleanse your body. Afterwards, you can walk the strip on Nathan Road and go shopping - walk off your meal!

If you think Hong Kong is a good vegetarian city because it's so diverse -- not completely true if…read moreyou want to get non-Western food. I think the trap is that dishes can *sound* vegetarian, but almost all common broths and sauces contains non-vegetarian items in it. Whenever I go vegetarian, I have a hard time finding more than one item on the menu at any cha chaan teng, because I know what actually goes in it. Which is what makes these sorts of vegetarian restaurants popular. Chinese vegetarian is not just "no killing of animals". They adhere to buddhist vegetarian habits, and don't use certain pungent vegetables like onions, garlic or chives in their cooking. That said, they are also somehow ok with making vegetables look and taste like meat. Gluten puffs that is chewy like a piece of stewed chicken? Sure! Soy protein packed together and sliced like ham? Why not. That is the sort of food you will get here -- vegetarian versions of popular pan-Chinese dishes, with the protein replaced by various plant-items ranging from the innocuous (tofu) to the there's-no-way-this-is-organic. Every bite brought me such surprise, because they do resemble the original dishes -- but it also makes me think, why? Are we not worthy to have vegetarian dishes that celebrate the vegetables on their own merit? That said, if you want some Chinese dishes but don't eat meat, this isn't bad and have a lot more variety of vegetarian dishes than other Chinese places. It also isn't bad for a good karma meal on Buddha's birthday. It just isn't something I actively look forward to.

Another main dish was rich and flavorful, with tender chunks of beef slow-cooked to perfection. Esp. the sauce!! Love it so much. Doused in umami yoghurt sauce, was also fork-tender, while its accompanying sauce adds a creamy texture and a hint of nuttiness. We rounded off our meal with a special .
