Well, not exclusively Melbourne style since you pretty much find them all over the place, but Melburnians are pretty proud of their coffee and cafe culture that they basically have co-opted the term (or at least I have). Very nice coffee shop right on the tram in Wan Chai neighborhood. Comfortable, modern, nice coffee selection, good wifi, comfortable seating. Totally different vibe for Hong Kong, dare I say a bit Western? You do need to order off of a QR code menu vs going up to the counter, which is weird because they have plenty of staff and there seem more coffees on the board than on the app. The cappuccino was nicely made and they have a nice front window to people watch! read more

I found this little gem while wandering around the Wan Chai district and I am so glad I did! TCA is one of the main brewing/roasting companies in Hong Kong. Their house TCA roast is a very simple blend but it is full of flavor. My favorite drink was the caffee misto. I ended up buying a bag of coffee to take home as a gift. In addition to their delicious coffee selection, they offer cold pressed juice from another local Hong Kong company. I ate eggs benedict most mornings in Hong Kong because it was so delicious and satisfying. TCA made a great eggs benedict, had delicious salmon, and also had a great pancake that was topped with pistachios and expresso butter. Each dish that I tried was made with fresh ingredients, had good flavor, and had ample portions. While the price was a little steep, I was in Hong Kong on vacation, so I splurged slightly for the delicious food. The employees at TCA were very patient and polite. The atmosphere is pretty trendy and is a lot like a cafe you may find in America. I enjoyed my overall experience and really enjoyed the food and drink. TCA is a quality place and I intend to visit again during my next trip to Hong Kong. read more

This is a cute, high-quality coffee shop in Hong Kong. If you're a coffee fanatic, they have everything from flat whites to coffee cocktails. They have a variety of beans and the menu is quite extensive in explaining all the different brews. There's also a food menu, if you'd like to nosh. I ordered a flat white and found it perfectly smooth and balanced. It was a little pricey, but worth it to relax and people watch at the seating near the window. You do need table service no matter where you sit, which I found a little annoying (and slow). No one came to take my order for 15 minutes after asking, so I had to go back up to the counter and flag down a server. It also took me a while to both receive my drink and the check. Worth checking out if you love coffee or just need a caffeine boost! read more

On of my major cafe destinations for my trip in Hong Kong and the entire ambience was exactly how I've imagined. You can either have the coffee to go or within the cafe where they had an extreme menu. The menu included their iconic cocktails, caffeine options as well as healthy food options. Unfortunately I can only comment on their flat white since I didn't have time to try the others. The flat white was lovely and to my expectation of what the cafe stands for even though the service took longer than expected. 20mins later, my cup finally arrives and in my opinion, $45HKD was a little overpriced for this. Didn't realize this was a chain, but a good coffee and breakfast spot nonetheless. I got the Academics breakfast (a splendid ensemble of sausage, eggs, beans, cheese, salad, and toast) and my girlfriend got the avocado toast (also very good). I tried the Jawa, which was sweeter than I had expected and not that much liquid, but it did the job. This was our first stop after stumbling off our plane from Xiamen and taxiing to Wan Chai, so we weren't sure of a lot of new-country restaurant basics (do we seat ourselves? when do we pay? etc.) Our waiter could tell we were a little travel-worn and was very warm and welcoming. Ask anyone in Hong Kong about good coffee and, after the mandatory eye rolling, one of the names that usually pops up is Coffee Academics. Pretty much opposite that venerable expat landmark - the Pawn - it's pretty easy to get to and does a great coffee (by Melbourne standards not general Hong Kong 'Oh thank goodness' standards). You can actually order a flat white - rather than the cappuccino you usually ask for as it's so much harder to stuff up. Now, ironically as I am currently writing a coffee bar review, I don't actually drink coffee - can't stand the stuff! But before you use that against me and discount everything I've just said, my husband is a very discerning coffee snob who mainlines the stuff when we are back in places where 'good' coffee is readily available and walks miles out his way (in deep snow if necessary - New York I'm looking at you) to find it in places where it's not. The point of that little sidebar is because while I eschew coffee, I LOVE a good hot chocolate, and, in my experience, a place that takes it's coffee seriously usually does an absolutely rubbish hot chocolate. It tends to just be hot, brown, sugary milk - BOO - especially when I've been dragged from pillar to post to get to the establishment in the first place. However, I am happy to say that at Coffee Academics this is not the case. The hot choccie lovers amongst us can accompany our coffee swilling loved ones to the stylishly decorated café and sip away to our sugar loving hearts' content. Oh - and the food's not half bad either! I wolfed down the suckling pig and apple pizza and will happily go back for seconds. Listen, I'm not going to go nuts here. Unless you go to a super dirty or over priced place, there's not a ton of variance in breakfast/brunch cafes. So while I'll never give a breakfast restaurant 5 stars unless it's extraordinary, a 3 star rating is pretty good. And that's what Coffee Academics is. It's got a very comfortable vibe plus a small spot for outdoor seating. The servers are very pleasant and friendly. Of course the coffee has to be very good to merit a return, and CA does have great coffee. On top of that, there is a good variety of food including the pictured croque madame. It was served with crispy curly fries and had a generous topping of greens, cheese, jambon, egg and mustard. This cafe is located in Wanchai on Johnston road just one block from the Southorn Playground.. It's great if your looking for a cool place to use some wifi, or chill after exiting the Wanchai MTR station. I came here on a weekday to do some studying and grab a cup of coffee. I really like the atmosphere in here which is laid back and a bit sophisticated at the same time. The baristas were very attentive, and I enjoyed watching them make various cups of joe. Their seating gives you many options. If you're rolling solo like me, they have bar seating with plenty of space to study and view the baristas working their magic. They also have a high table option that is good for larger groups. For more if an intimate setting there are tables down a short hallway towards the bathroom. For those of you who like to people watch, there's also plenty of window seating available. I wanted to try something different, so I orders the Okinawa. It's served with a chunk of artisan brown sugar made in Japan. I never knew that brown sugar could be artisan, I only thought light or dark were the options. This artisan brown sugar was so sweet and added an unique flavor to the coffee. I will definitely return and have this again when I have some downtime in Wanchai. Sitting out at the tables, service was not horrible, but it seemed like they could've used one more wait staff. My first time here four years ago was not very noteworthy, service was unbelievably slow, it took them 30 plus minutes to prepare my cappuccino. Quite unacceptable. Ever since I have been very apprehensive about returning despite the rave reviews. I decided to give them another try when my friend wanted to grab brunch at 5pm (ha!). She recommended the iced pink lemonade (HK$50), which I also ordered, along with the avocado and mashed avocado toast (HK$78). Delivery of the food and beverages was quicker than last time, arriving within 10 minutes, bravo! However, the pink lemonade was simply too sweet, sickly sweet, no amount of water could dilute it. I've come to an conclusion that I just don't like lemonade. Also, it was overpriced. HK$50 for an iced drink?! Are you kidding me? The main dish came with a side of salad, very nice. The mashed avocado (didn't taste too fresh...) was slathered on top of a thick slice of Farmer's bread, topped with a poached egg and some spicy sauce. I love this place! Superb selection of fresh strong coffee and pastries I visited a gf in Hong Kong and was completely jet lagged. As I wandered aimlessly in the early morning, I was surprised that barely any restaurants were opened. I walked into coffee academics half asleep and was greeted by the friendliest of staff who exuded an aura of natural wholesomeness. I ordered the Manukau coffee which is a subtle tasting coffee similar to a latte that uses honey instead of sugar. I was rather pleased by caffeine kick yet smooth taste of the beverage. The size was a bit smaller than my American expectations but got me through my 8-10am work out The establishment also offers breakfast ranging from simple fresh banana nut bread to a whole platter of smoked lox Benedict. The ingredients were fresh and the environment reminded me of an old Seattle coffee shop vibe-the kind you stumbled into before Starbucks came along I highly recommend this coffee shop for it's quality ingredients, the friendly service, and oh so comfortable and spacious (in HK terms that is) setting. This coffee shop atmosphere is totally well done and beautiful. The process of ordering a cup of coffee is also fantastic. They are using traditional techniques of grinding the beans and manually brewing the coffee, which is entertaining to watch. However, as an avid coffee drinker, the taste did not meet my expectation.
