They identified several pre-existing issues and rectified several concerns we had with the work a previous owner had performed. All good now! The second visit was an emergency call that resulted from another contractor inadvertently damaging our well power line. Jason Long (the owner) and Jeff T. came out first thing this morning and made it all right again. I find people in Frederick to generally be friendly and professional, but these gentlemen represent the best this area has to offer in neighborliness, professionalism and going beyond the norm to set things right. Whenever they and their helpers were on site, the work was first-rate, and I'd welcome either of them back without hesitation. My one real reservation is staffing. We gave the company our strict timeline a full six months in advance, but for the first four months the crew was here only sporadically; which delayed our project and pushed our other contractors behind schedule too. The last three weeks they were here almost every day and accomplished a tremendous amount, which honestly just made me wish that commitment had been there from day one. For anyone comparing bids, the rates run a little higher than some but the quality of the work backs it up. If the company dedicates its people to your job from the start, you'll be in great hands. The talent is clearly there, and we're happy with the finished result.

That said, I've used Modern Home Services multiple times over the years, but my last experience was upsetting and frustrating to the point I feel the need to write this. I have an older stackable unit that I debated repairing versus just replacing. I called and spoke with the nice guy who often answers the phone there. I thought he was the owner...he is not. I told him my situation and my debate about replacing versus repairing. He told me the part cost and estimated that the repair would total up around $200. After thinking about it, I could accept $200 versus a full replacement so I scheduled the repair. The guy who came out to do the repair was the actual owner (I didn't know that until later). He replaced the shorted overheating sensor and it was back working, great. When he first put it back together it was a little squeaky, so he adjusted something and it sounded like it was fine. He writes up the bill and to my shock it was $350!! Way more than I ever would have agreed to in advance, hence why I tried to determine that. I frustratingly paid the bill and then proceeded to call the guy I spoke with originally, asking why it was so much more when the repair was EXACTLY what he thought it would be (shorted overheating element). He didn't have an acceptable answer, other than the owner (guy who came out) charged what he charged. Now, after using it for the first time since it was repaired, I'm noticing a squeak and some metal on metal sound. It had NONE of that before the repair. I called back and they are telling me it's likely a bearing and it will be another $200 to fix it. No freaking way, and it didn't have this issue until you took it apart. It didn't just magically show up instantly after the repair, I think he didn't have it right when he put it back together and the weight of the clothes brought back the noises that were there when he first put it back together. No offer was made to come take a look, just to make sure the repair was done correctly. Based on this experience, I will never use them again and cannot recommend that anyone else do so. Sad to say.

I am amazed there are only a couple Yelp reviews for this business. I even asked about why there were not more Yelp reviews at our first interview & Kenny the owner said he gets most work from Another's List though he's booked many jobs over the last few years from Yelp referrals so it must be a good start for people searching for help. I wanted to add another post to Yelp because this is where I found the business. So, here goes. I interviewed 5 companies for our job. This is why Peekskill got the work: 1. They arrive on time, every time. This is a HUGELY UNIQUE experience for us! 2. They call you back. Not just same day but for me it was the same hour! 3. They are as interested in each new project as the homeowner. 4. Kenny has many years of experience as an independent electrician and he does the work himself with really nice young people apprenticing. I like knowing the person I talk to is the person I'll work with on the project. 5. For me, his experience and recognition of what it takes to work on an old building clinched the deal. Now the work is done, I can't say enough positive things about the experience, but here are a few impressions: 6. Prices were competitive with other contractors. Response time BY FAR exceeded others. I had a contract the day after our evening interview (but I am still waiting to here from one of the other 5 companies!!) 7. Kenny is a genuine, nice, professional person. He has really good communication skills and is easy to work with. That's a plus for weekend warriors and DIY projects. He is a happy person who genuinely likes working with people and helping them see their project come to life. 8. I got the impression the city inspectors really like his work. You won't be stuck trying to coordinate repeat work or re-inspection visits. We have a new favorite electrician: Peekskill Electric!!
