I was really torn about how to rate this restaurant since there are so few options in Mendon -- I'm probably one of the old timers who just misses having Lowell's in its old, convenient location. I think the thing to remember about places like this in this area is that there are lots of breakfast/lunch diner places but they call close at 2 or 3pm and they, for the most part, are a little pricey. So, let's start with the good parts: there are lots of food options, including many veggie and even some gluten-free choices, which is important when you have a family member with food restrictions. Their espresso is decent. It's a medium roast, so not as dark and earthy as Starbucks, but still pretty good. I've been here with family and friends, and everyone has always enjoyed their food. They hire locals, including many high school kids and recent grads, which I appreciate. Now, the drawbacks that made me hover between 2 and 3 stars... First, the wait time. There is no reason it should take so long to order or to get your food. There are tons of staff here. I don't know what's going on that it takes so long, but it does. Secondly, the tables and booths are not cleaned often or well. There are always crumbs, coffee rings, spilled water, used napkins, etc., either on seats or on the table. Even when people bus their own tables, which they do, they need to be wiped down regularly, and they aren't. The floor was sticky and "crunchy" last time I was there, and I have to say the sticky floor thing is a pretty regular occurrence. And, the last three times I used the bathroom, it was either not clean or not stocked. When I visited with my father a few months ago, I ordered coffee, and he had coffee with a sandwich. His food arrived with the wrong items, and the bread was not toasted, as he had requested. It also took more than 30 minutes. If they could speed up the process and assign one of their many staff members to continually clean the busy seating area, I think that would bump this up to four stars easily. read more

Stopped in this morning around 9:30am. I've enjoyed the muffins and coffee here in the past, so I was looking forward to coming back. Unfortunately, the experience was disappointing this time. Even with only three people ahead of me, the wait to order was nearly 15 minutes, and things seemed a bit disorganized behind the counter. When I tried to order an Asiago bagel with butter and a cherry cheesecake (already in the display), I was told the wait would be 20-25 minutes. Since I was on my way to church, I couldn't stay that long and had to leave without the bagel. OK, so I haven't given a three star review in a long time. When I initially entered the muffin house everything in the case looked delicious. A guy asked us what we wanted to order and we told him we were still looking around cause it was our first time and he could take the next customer. After we decided maybe like a few minutes later we waited to be helped. Two employees engaged in side conversations while we just stood there waiting to be helped. That went on for at least five minutes. Then finally the girl was like are you being helped and then we said no. The cupcake that I got was delicious. The cinnamon sick was somewhat dry. We ordered a frozen coffee and when we took it out to the car, we realized that it was either made wrong or we were given the wrong one because it had a heavy taste of mint. So I brought it back in to bring it to the male Employee's attention and he seemed irritated by it. He said it was made correctly. He wasn't sure what exactly we ordered but the regular coffee shouldn't have a mint taste, but he hadn't tried it so he's not 100% sure but then offered to remake it. The woman that initially made it came out and apologized. She was much nicer about it and said she does recall using the coffee powder, but it was possible that the wrong powder got put in the container. She did remake it and it tasted 100% different from the first one. As I was waiting for the frozen coffee, I was looking around and realize a lot of unsanitary things. My phone had died while I was there, so I was unable to take photos but the refrigerator behind the register, the bottom shelf was filthy. A lot of the walls were heavily stained with just random stuff. It did look like it was like an older building, but cleanliness was definitely not up to par. It's a shame because I truly did enjoy the cupcake, but based off my entire experience, I probably wouldn't return. read more

Overpriced, poor quality. Whoopee pie tasted like the paper it was in, blueberry muffins were awful. Sorry but they also had a weird taste, & blueberries were hard. Can't believe the tipping process starts @ 15% unless you customize. I tip heavily but not like that for someone to put muffins in a box. Coffee was horrible. I never review like this, but for a $40 order for some muffins it was definitely not worth it. Won't be back. read more

Finally stopped into Muffin House Cafe on Route 16 in Mendon for breakfast--& wow! There were so many great options, but I went with the Spicy Sunrise on a jalapeño cheddar bagel: egg, sausage, spinach, tomato, onion, pepper jack cheese, & chipotle mayo. Absolute perfection. Paired it with a delicious caramel macchiato, & of course I couldn't leave without muffins. The blueberry & apple cinnamon were both incredible. They have five other locations across Massachusetts--definitely worth checking out! read more

My hands bound behind the wooden chair, my eyes blindfolded, and my mouth open in a pained gasp, that's what this place feels like. All the machinations and trappings of a good breakfast diner, but a significant lack of closing the deal. Did the owner lose the spark? Did franchising kill the heart? The coffee is definitely coffee, the muffins were muffin-shaped, but that's all. In short, it was high school, basic, and a total tease. Just like my ex. Since it's called the muffin house, I thought it would be most appropriate to try one of their muffins, along with an iced coffee and bagel. Just by looking at their menu, I thought my mind was made up on the coffee cake muffin, but after seeing them behind the glass, I changed my mind to the blueberry one. For the bagel, I chose the jalapeno cheddar with chive cream cheese. I normally don't drink coffee so when I ordered the sticky cinnamon bun flavor, I was expecting it to come with milk and a sweetener already. Since it didn't, I panicked and asked for cream. It was way too creamy and I could feel the fat from the cream sinking in my stomach so I wasn't too big of a fan. The bagel was almost a wheat color, and had little hints of spicy. It has A LOT of cream cheese, to the point where I wiped about half of it off. The muffin was really delicious. The top has some sugar crystals and throughout, there were big blueberries. If you leave it in the brown bag for a couple hours, the muffin gets really soft, and the sugar almost melts into the bread. The muffin was $5 which I thought was a bit steep, but it was really yummy so I forgot about the price. It seems like they fulfill orders in the order they were place since it took about 10 minutes to get our bagel. They do have plenty of parking as well as a spacious dine in area. read more

My daughter and I meet here occasionally to share a breakfast sandwich after she drops the kids off at school, and always bring muffins home for everyone else. It's hard to plan ahead what to order because the specials are always spectacular, but we have our favorites from the main menu as well. We love sitting in a comfortable booth so we can plug in and recharge. They always greet us with a smile and are very efficient at getting our order ready quickly. Lately going to the Mendon location is very difficult because if there is even ONE person in front of you, you are going to wait a minimum of 30 minutes for a sandwich. I went in this morning, got in line around 705 am and was still standing waiting for my order to be taken at 727. When the person went to take the order in front of me, she stated a breakfast sandwich would take a minimum of 15 minutes to make. I had to leave at that point because I had work at 730 (not their fault, but I figured it would take more than 10 minutes to get a sandwich). Now im at work with no breakfast, and I wont doordash from there because they do not allow food substitutions and I hate eggs. I dont want to spend upwards of $30 on doordash and have to take eggs off my food. Not worth it read more

Overall, a disappointing spot. The server seemed taxed to have to help customers, and with that many people working you'd think a "Hello, someone will be right with you" might occur. Nothing. I stopped by our usual breakfast Muffin House in Mendon yesterday morning. The line was long as it usually is due to the great food they usually put out. There are always new faces working behind the counter and I enjoy watching them hustle to get the orders out. There was a new girl on the grill. She seemed to be not enjoying herself. The eggs that she was cooking were breaking apart and the egg white pour was all over the place. I wasn't happy with my food the past two visits and I knew I wasn't going to be happy this time either after seeing what was happening. I walked out of the line and drove home. The service and food in Mendon has slowly deteriorated. I'm going to go back to the Medway Muffin House in the future because they are very consistent with the food and service. read more

I stopped by around 10:00 am on a Thursday morning for coffee and a pistachio muffin. There were 2 people ahead of me so I got there at a good time. There were no pistachio muffins on display so I asked if any were available elsewhere. This is the second time I've been here and had the same issue. I came in for a grilled muffin and a hot apple cider. They split the muffin down the middle and put it into the grill with the muffin liner still on it. The muffin was already baked with it once, trying to get it off after a second cooking experience is impossible, it falls apart. This is why every other place I have ever gone to removes it. I pointed it out before and they said good point. Today I came in and the same thing happened and I had to wait over 10 minutes for it and ask after it. Even though the only other 2 customers came in after me. I was told I would be called when it was ready rather abruptly. A few minutes later I was told it was on the other side of the cafe with take out orders and had been there for sometime even though I was having it here. The staff person I picked it up from said they could put it back on the grill if it got cold. Again it was in the liner. Again when I tried to remove it the muffin fell apart. I like to check out local cafes to support local companies as I feel the big franchises are generic. And one of them also gives me a headache trying to drink their "coffee". So I came across this place and figured I try it. I was looking for a coffee and a breakfast sandwich. They have a variety of coffee flavors and specials. I was leaving Milford hospital after a LONG day in the ER and all I wanted was muffin house since it's so close. It was a Saturday and crazy. We waited a long time to get our food and drinks and when we did get it we ran out the door with the bags before Looking to make sure it was correct. Their sandwiches are all delicious, their bagels and toppings could spar with the Best of Boston but service service service, it takes forever to order because either the staff are hard of hearing or distracted I have to correct the order multiple times before they have it right. No "oder here" "pay here" signs so confusion always. Their handling of ingredients is clumsy-- huge piece of a mostly tomato skin, a chunk of whatever always spilling out. Knife skills and technique can be taught, good food is an art. They have the art part. And be ready for painfully slow- regardless of time or day. read more

Not only are their muffins moist, delicious, and bursting with all the yummy fillings, but their breakfast sandwiches and desserts (specifically the lemon squares) are to-die-for!!!! The Mendon location also seems to have ample seating even during busy times. One downside is the ordering system is somewhat difficult as you can't usually see what muffins they have available. The muffin case is far down the line near the register, and you usually get asked your order farther down. However, the food more than makes up for it! If you are trying to get in on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday don't show up hungry because you will be waiting in a line out the door. The muffin house is very busy unless you go at weird off hours. The ordering process can be confusing if you have never been before and the staff is 50/50. Some staff are extremely helpful and friendly while others put off an attitude of not wanting to be there nor care to help you. Seating is hard when it's busy and I have had to wait for a table. The baked goods are great and the breakfast sandwiches are even better. Tough place to have an allergy accommodate for. We have been told numerous times that they have an eggs only grill that no meat is cooked on but have seen meat and cross contamination of utensils on the egg only grill. Coffee selection is great though lots of flavors and I love the specials for the holidays. Overall if you have the time and want to wait on a weekend it is a decent spot for breakfast. read more
