This soccer complex is awesome, and to me it's not even about the actual soccer field. There's actually two side fields ( I guess that's how you could describe them?? ) with a huuuuuge field in the middle that has a track around it, so big in fact that one lap around is half a mile. It's also located off on Barrett Parkway. The soccer complex also has a concession stand, bathrooms, a separate playground, and a decent parking lot. No extra frills, just space to get in a good walk ( or run ) or to watch a good soccer game.

I've passed by this place a million times but when out little one started playing soccer here, I finally had an opportunity to check it out. There is an area for batting practice as well as an indoor soccer field. Nothin too fancy about this place but I do appreciate that there are plenty of bleachers available to sit and watch as well as bathrooms available. This place is pretty clean and the staff are helpful if you need anything.

However, our experience with the manager/owner, Shon, introduced an element of discomfort that cannot be overlooked. In preparation for this event, I visited the location on multiple occasions and had not previously encountered him. His presence and demeanor on the day of our gathering felt noticeably reactive, particularly once it became apparent that our group--comprised of approximately 40 to 50 Black attendees--was utilizing the space. This created an impression that our presence was, in some way, unexpected or unwelcome. Additionally, there was inconsistency and lack of clarity regarding your policies. We were initially informed that external speakers were not permitted. Afterward, we were told we could only utilize the facility's radio system. When we requested a station change to better suit the tone of our private event, the response involved internal deliberation and hesitation. When Shon eventually addressed us, his explanation--though carefully worded--suggested an underlying reluctance to allow what he indirectly referred to as "urban" music. While he attempted to frame this in consideration of "families" and "Christian patrons," the implication was both unnecessary and, frankly, offensive. It is important to emphasize that this was a paid, private event. As such, it is reasonable to expect that the environment would be tailored to the preferences of the hosting party, rather than hypothetical or intermittent walk-in guests. The repeated presence of management circling our group, observing, and intermittently interjecting added to an atmosphere that felt less like hospitality and more like scrutiny. While we remained focused on enjoying the occasion we planned and paid for, the overall experience was undeniably impacted by what felt like biased assumptions and differential treatment. The situation left us feeling uncomfortable and, quite honestly, disrespected. I trust this feedback will be taken seriously and used to reassess how guests--regardless of background--are engaged and accommodated moving forward.

It was…read moremy first chance to check out the team's new training facility, officially known as the Children's Healthcare of Atlanta Training Ground. Construction began in February 2016 and the training facility opened on April 11, 2017. I've worked off of Franklin Gateway (formerly Franklin Road) since 2001. In recent years, I've watched Franklin Gateway transform, mainly with the demolition of several old apartment complexes (that's where the land for this training facility came from). With this $60 million training facility and the new $11 million Franklin Gateway Sports Complex now open and metro Atlanta's second IKEA store and a three-story driving range and sports entertainment center on the way, Franklin Gateway is really changing. Unfortunately, the training ground isn't open to the public. The only way that I and a couple thousand other folks got to see it is because of the special Atlanta United Opening Training event. Tickets to this event were made available only to Atlanta United season ticket holders and I was able to snag a couple tickets from a season-ticket-holding friend who wasn't able to go. Since parking is limited at the facility, we were instructed to park at Six Flags White Water, about 2.5 miles north, and shuttle to the event. Even Lyft and Uber drivers were directed to Six Flags White Water. This worked out pretty seamlessly. Security checks and ticket scanning took place at Six Flags White Water and not at the training ground itself. I was looking forward to checking out both the inside and outside of the facility, but we were only allowed to check out certain sections of the outside. There are six full-sized soccer fields at the training ground. I pass them every weekday morning on my way into work. On all of my commutes into work as well as occasionally passing by on my way back in to work from my lunch breaks and leaving work, I've never seen anyone out on the fields except for one time (and it was just one person). The open training took place on the training ground's one "show pitch" (exhibition playing field), which is not visible from the road. The show pitch has a 2,500-seat stand - sort of like high school bleachers, but nicer - on one side of the field. The owner, Arthur Blank (who was present and spoke to us at the event), staff, VIPs, and special guests got to watch the event from a fancy glass building that overlooked the pitch. Sports talk radio station 92.9 The Game was on-site broadcasting, there was a DJ, several food trucks, and a pop-up team store/trailer. The grounds were clean and the buildings looked new, modern, and state-of-the-art. Walking around, enjoying the sights and sounds, it was hard to believe I was on Franklin Gateway (I still have the urge to call it Road). There was an MC, we watched videos on a video board (for a new facility for a Major League Soccer team, the video board was mindboggingly small), and at least one of the players addressed the crowd. As for the open training itself, props and training tools were set up on the field and we watched as the coaches ran the players through various drills (in Spanish). Players who weren't doing drills gingerly jogged around the perimeter of the field. Once that was over, the team scrimmaged. What I liked most about the event was how close we were to the players and coaches. The training ground is an intimate venue. As the players practiced and jogged, they also interacted with us. Along with being the home for the Atlanta United first team and club staff, the training ground is also home for the club's youth academy teams (U-19 through U-12).

Before this season I could only review Johnson Ferry Sports soccer program. My children are not…read more"sporty kids" and my oldest has some anxiety around trying new things....as in "if she doesnt try she wont fail". We put her in soccer at Upward for the first time in Fall 2021 and of course it was a little traumatizing for her. On more than one occasion she ran off the field during the game and practice. She cried and dug her heels in a lot. BUT her wonderful coaches and teammates rallied around her and supported her during this first season and she prevailed. In 2022 soccer season, we only had ONE incident of running off during a game and her teammates were still equally supportive and loving. I love the fact that these coaches (and kids) have kind hearts and instead of getting frustrated at the girl who kept running off the field, they supported and encouraged her. I cant wait to see what 2023 soccer is going to be like. She's decided she loves goalie... The 3s soccer is a little different than the organized teams. They all meet on a field and it's like a practice where parents get out their with their toddlers on Saturday at a given time and they learn the skills...dribbling, passing, etc. Perfect for a 3 year old. The last Saturday of the season they scrimmage. Nothing cuter than little toddlers running around "herding" the ball. The 4s soccer program is great...same concept of little ones running after the ball, but this time it's every Saturday and practice one day a week. OH I LOVE THAT PART....one day of practice and one game a week!!!! As relaxing as sports can get. We're in T-Ball this Spring and it's been awesome. Somehow I messed up and put my 4 year old who has never played T-Ball on the Advanced 6U team, but they are accepting of him and the coaches are great with him. Considering they can still use at T, it's been good. Heres what I know about JF Sports (Upward Program). 1. The teams are made by their coaches which are parents (and grandparents and adults who love kids) who are volunteering their time to coach...BIG THANK YOU to that. 2. Upward integrates the Christian Faith into the sports program - kindness, acceptance, love, support, encouragement...and devotionals during the practices. 3. JF Sports is chill....a great place to introduce tentative kids to the world of sports and watch them grow. 4. The kids LOVE running thru the parent tunnel at the end of the soccer games. All in all, we love JF Sports & the Upward program.
