They have a great selection of tough toys for puppies that has been the longest lasting toy compared to the other ones I bought. A great store in the Ballard community. They always have an array of options for my cat, and the workers are very friendly and knowledgeable. It might seem pricey, but the items are much higher quality and anything you return gets donated to an animal shelter. You can also ask for their treat of the day and they'll give you a little snack for your dog or cat. Special shout out: One night I really needed Litter Genie refills. Like, the litter box was overflowing and there's no way I could have gone another hour without them. I called up to see if they had any, and there was only one left in stock. The person offered to save it for me behind the counter, and I rushed in to pick it up. Major kudos! *Another special shout out*: We're trying to find a new wet food for our cat so he'll forget there's medicine in his food. Every time I enter the store, I always feel welcomed and supported no matter what! The employees are kind and thoughtful and have extensive knowledge about pet nutrition. The store is always so clean and organized, so it's easy for me to walk around with my dog and not bump into things. They have a fantastic selection of pet food and the staff have always offered phenomenal advice when I need to change foods for my dog's digestive issues. Awesome customer service! My dog had been eating the same food for years and it's no longer available at any pet stores in the area. So I went to Mud Bay to get new food and my dog ended up getting sick for two weeks from his new food. I took back the food and was a little worried because the bag was opened and I didn't have the receipt. However, I was able to exchange the food for a different bag with no issues AND no questions asked. They went above and beyond to assess the fat ratio & food contents to ensure I was buying something that (hopefully) wouldn't make my dog sick again. And they even gave me samples of other dog foods and digestive aid just in case. read more

I'm updating because I am in LOVE with Mud Bay! The hubsters recently bought a 30lb bag of dog food for our CATS - and only realized it until after he opened the bag. The kibble was way too big for our diva felines, so we had to unload it somewhere. We stopped in to buy some cat food, and he asked if there were any way we could return it - and they said no problem! With a receipt, full refund, no receipt store credit... even opened bags of food. I love this Mud Bay for several reasons, but chief among those reasons, it's literally right down the street from where I live. (But don't get too excited; I still drive there, haha). Mud Bay is is open surprisingly pretty late for a pet store. This is my go-to place to buy my cats' fancy, overpriced, expensive cat food. Joking aside, I think that Mud Bay provides a variety of decently priced and healthy alternatives for your pet. The bonito flakes here are my cats' absolute favorite treat. And you get a big container for around $5. I won't buy litter here, because I'm not totally insane, but I won't get my food anywhere else. The staff is always really nice and often ask if they can help me carry things out to my car, which is a nice touch. And a private parking lot! This speaks volumes in a city where most people commute, so parking is a luxury. El Camion shares a parking lot with Mud Bay. Could this place get any better? Methinks not. read more

WOW! I ran out of kibble for my dog, and rushed to Mud Bay because I thought they closed at 9pm - it was 8:52pm when I pulled into the parking lot. I pull on the door and it's locked, and see their hours M-F 9am-8:30pm. Sigh. I get back in my car and as I'm pulling out of the parking stall, an employee is knocking on my window and says that he still has a register open and would be happy to help me. Seriously?! Yes, seriously. They didn't have my dog's brand, but offered to give me a few samples of a similar kibble to get me through dinner time. They gave me 3 sample-sized bags at no charge and sent me off with a smile. I'm extremely grateful to the staff for their kindness and generosity. They truly went above and beyond. I recently adopted a dog. I ordered some stuff on Amazon, but for the rest I had questions, so I brought him with me to Mud Bay. It was great! One of the employees held his leash for me and walked around so I could use both hands to browse. I found everything I needed easily, including getting an ID tag engraved. My favorite helpful tip was when I told them that he loves squeaky toys, but he's driving us up the wall, so we don't want to buy more. They showed me right to squeaky toys that are made so only dogs can hear them. Hallelujah! When I checked out, an employee helped me carry the stuff to my car because I didn't have enough hands for the stuff and my big dog. The next day I came back and exchanged some of the stuff because I realized it wasn't going to work. I'll definitely be back many times in the future! read more

We shop at the 15th street location, near Ballard. Usually, the customer service is fine. I went in in May, during the corona virus. They have a hand washing station as you walk in. There is a sign asking you to wash your hands before entering, and before you get a chance to read the sign, and start washing your hands, I was barked at to wash my hands by an associate. Then, upon checking out the checker jumped back so hard he hit the wall behind the check stand. I'm wearing a mask, and there was no sign saying not to come up to the check stand. I figured, ok, figuring out the virus thing.... Then, my husband is driving to get cat food a few days ago. As he pulls in to the parking lot, we get a text that curfew is in effect. They promptly lock their doors, and our cat had to wait till the next day for food. When he returned, he told me of the same unwelcoming behavior by the sales associates....obnoxious jumping back etc. We are both over 50 and are meticulous about trying not to catch or spread the virus. Always masked in public and look for instructional signage. If you really don't want to be there, maybe you should just close the store. Instead, we are going to take the LARGE amount of money we spend here on ours and our kids pets and order online. read more

Customer for life! I just visited the Mud Bay on 15th to buy a few holiday gift and while we were there my 4 year old dropped his hot chocolate all over the floor. I felt terrible, but The staff was so nice about the clean up. And while we were finishing our shopping on of the employees ran next door and surprised my son with a new hot chocolate. It was just such a nice gesture. Everyone else in the store was also great. Will be buying all of my silly expensive dog food from this shop going forward. Normally all my visits have been great but today at the Ballard location I was shown terrible customer service. I came all the way on foot to the front door to discover the store closed 4.5 hours early due to weather. This I understand, however, I called the store (as the paper on the door told me to do before I turned around!) it was 4:10pm having closed at 4, and even though the girl at the front desk picked up the phone (why even bother?) She wouldn't let me come in and pickup an order that you all texted me was there today. Now my cat will either go hungry or get sick from an alternative food as it has been historically when we switch food. I understand she wanted to go home early, who doesn't, but seeing me freezing at the door having gone there on foot simply asking to pickup a delivery she should've used her discretion and let me do so. Never really write reviews, but I will never patronize a different pet store company after coming here for the first time. My wife and I just got our first dog, total noobs, and we decided to go here to purchase dog food for the first time yesterday (Sunday 10/23). I couldn't have been more impressed with the staff here. Beyond excellent. The gentleman who helped us, Marcus, was incredibly patient and kind, and of course super helpful. The other two gentlemen were equally friendly when we checked out, and we left there with a bag of samples, treats, and a handwritten card welcoming us and our new dog and thanking us for our business. Truly, the best shopping experience of any kind I've had purchasing anything frankly. I hope those gentlemen get recognized, and we will absolutely be back. Pretty much everyone who works here is awesome but I do want to make a shout-out to Ashley who took it upon herself to help us with a wild goose chase, specifically trying to find a dog food both grain-free and pea-free for one of my dogs who has EPI (I had read that pea-free food can help). Even though we didn't find that in a regular kibble, she spent probably a good 10 minutes looking at like every food Mud Bay stocks. Will miss this store when we leave Ballard! read more

HORRENDOUS customer service. Their payment system automatically declines BOA cards, no problem as the other stores are familiar and have a workaround - this particular MudBay isn't aware of this and instead treated me as though I was the idiot with the problem. I started to explain that he could call the other store to learn about the issue and was met with an attitude of little care or concern, at which point I realized I will not be shopping here ever again. The payment system doesn't work with boa, the service is terrible. Just skip it. And hey to the manager of the store - take 3 minutes to call 85th and ask about the issue and their workaround - you can save yourself and your future customers the embarrassment. read more

This is my favorite Mud Bay location! We come here all the time with our little Cockalier and he is all wags and pants. The people who work here are genuinely thrilled to see dogs and hand out treats left and right. He can't get enough! We always wind up getting him his frozen bones, freeze-dried liver treats and various chews. It's also the first place we have run to when our dog has a medical issue. We set up a vet appointment and run out to get natural ear or eye drops to ease his discomfort. read more

I didn't appreciate being pinned as dumb by the gal with short blond hair working in the store today (October 19). I came in at 3:50pm looking for cat pan liners and she stood there staring at me and in a condescending manner says, "liners?" Then we walked over to the liners and asked if she knew when they were getting more, I was looking for the extra large in a particular brand. She shows me another brand but unfortunately, they don't work. She then says, "oh well you must be thinking of a different store." I pointed to the brand I get, I ALWAYS buy them at this store, but instead told that I'm crazy for thinking they would be at this store?! I said I'll buy them online. She didn't make any effort to look or ask another store. Then says, sorry. I feel really stupid!! I even came in over the weekend asking if they'd get more and the employee says check back on Monday. I used to like this store and semi look forward to coming here. However, that has recently changed! As other posters have pointed out, Mud Bay was one of the first companies to really take the pandemic seriously. Which is great! As a health professional, I take it seriously too! I always wear a face mask when I go outside, and I use tremendous amounts of hand sanitizer. This brings us to my recent visit. When I arrived, I saw that they had a hand washing station outside. I dutifully washed my hands. So far, so good. Next, I turned and started to walk toward the door. This is where everything really went to s***. The store clerk in the store opened the door for me, and then proceeded to give me a solid 5 minute lecture (truly) about social distancing, the need to protect everyone by standing 6 feet away, etc, etc. Now, by this point the pandemic had been going on for multiple months. I knew the drill. I literally only needed to buy one thing -- cat food. I was also literally the only customer in the store! After the lecture was finally done, I picked up my cat food and tried to pay. At which point I got lectured AGAIN for first being too close to the counter, and then too far away. Oh my good lord. I have now been avoiding this store for months and I really wanted to continue buying my cat food / cat litter online, but the products that seem to work best for my cats are only easy to get via Mud Bay. Bummer. Look, I understand staying safe during the pandemic. We're all on the same page there. But I will not continue to shop here if I get lectured at relentlessly every time I make the mistake of trying to do business with you. Life is just too short and staying sane is more important to me than supporting a local chain. read more

First, let me say I am a huge fan of Mud Bay. The Lake Forest and Capitol Hill stores are simply amazing. Having typed this, the Ballard store is the WORST customer experience I have ever had. I had never been in that store and was trying to find the normal cat food I usually buy! The two bald-headed clerks not only wouldn't help me; but complete refused to even acknowledge my existence. Even when I finally asked the taller of the two to help me, he gave me a very disgusted look and then took me the food, pointed at it and then walked away. He then refused to check me out. I had to have a female clerk ring my purchases. Never again will I walk into that store. I'll make the trip to Capitol Hill where I know I'll get good service. Shame on Mud Bay for having such horrible representatives. read more

I'm taking care of Linus the wiener dog, he's 13 years young and while his care givers are on vacation, we ran out of some kind of "dentasticks". I have no idea what brand they use so enter Mud Bay. I was greeted at the door by Adam, a handsome and kind man who instantly connected with me and my situation. He gave me more than 3 options and I purchased Fresh Smileezz. The staff at Mud Bay is incredibly helpful. They've been coaching me through the process of finding new food for my possibly allergy ridden cat. They give free samples, and you can exchange unopened packages if your pet doesn't like what you bought. My finicky puppy didn't like the food that I pre purchased for him at PetSmart so after inquiring with the Vet as to what food she recommended I was pointed in the direction of Mud Bay to find a suitable choice. The store was expansive and had a variety of options for food, treats, toys, etc... The clerk, while seemingly uninterested in my presence, offered free sample bags of different foods to try and gave me detailed explanations of why certain ones were more expensive than others. I did have to gently nudge him before he offered the samples or any recommendations which was slightly offputting but thankfully I finally found a food that my puppy loves! Would have rated it a 5 but the clerks...something seemed off about them. While knowledgeable they just seemed like they would have rather been left alone to talk amongst themselves then help the customers. read more

Mud Bay vs. All The Best... FIGHT! Okay, I will cross-post this with an All The Best review, since these are the two Ballard stores that are in direct competition with one another, and the only two choices in Ballard you should consider for buying your pet's food. Truth is, you really can't go wrong with either store, but depending on your buying habits, one store may have an advantage over the other. Selection: visually estimating, Mud Bay appears to have a much wider assortment of brands. And in fact, some of the brands I favor are only available at Mud Bay. Yet, there is room for improvement in offering more varieties within some brands. All The Best appears to carry fewer brands, but offer a full selection of the brands they do carry. To say this another way, Mud Bay may offer 3 flavors each of 20 different brands, while All The Best carries 5 flavors each of 12 different brands. Both stores have 60 options, but the assortment varies. I end up shopping at both locations regularly, because neither has everything that I buy. Prices: Mud Bay is slightly cheaper across the board, and for the items I purchase, match the prices offered on Amazon. Everything at All The Best is marked up higher (about 5-7% for the items I purchase), HOWEVER, All The Best also has a rewards program, giving you store credit after you have accrued so many points. PLUS, they participate in manufacturer reward programs. For example, The Honest Kitchen has a program that gives you a free box of food for every 10 boxes purchased. The program is only available at participating retailers - All The Best participates, but Mud Bay does not. Non-food products: Both stores have a limited selection of toys and accessories. I wouldn't ding either one for this, since their primary business is pet food. Toys and accessories are a huge market, so just know there is a lot more out there than either of these stores sell. For supplements, Mud Bay appears to have a little bit wider range of options. Other considerations: Both stores feature friendly, welcoming staff that are happy to spoil your dog with treats. Both stores have free parking, and reasonable hours, but Mud Bay does open earlier and close later. Check out both stores, see what they have to offer from your favorite brands. If they both have what you regularly buy, it's probably cheaper at Mud Bay. If you buy a lot, you may want to do the math with All The Best to see if their rewards program will make them the cheaper option. Either way, you can feel good about your choice as they are both good options. UPDATE: although it's not perfect, I had to bump Mud Bay up a star due to one huge advantage - they recently installed a huge sample bar. This will let you make sure that your pet will not turn its nose to a new flavor without having to risk wasting money on an entire bag of the product. I recently bought a $35 bag of Oracle at All The Best, which turned out to be a waste. If I could have sampled it like Mud Bay allows, I'd have saved some decent money. Thanks Mud Bay! read more

My last visit to Mud Bay in Ballard demands a yelp review! I was shopping for cat food for my very picky cat who hasn't been wanting to eat anything I give him. He'll take a couple of licks and then walk away. It's been a bloody nightmare. I stopped by Mud Bay and picked up an array of different brands and flavors of canned food for my princess cat. At the checkout counter, the sales person informed me that I can get up to 3 cans of food FOR FREE (per visit) since we had never tried any of cans. Great deal!! Now that is customer service!! I would like to share my recent experience which validate their commitment to provide safe & quality pet foods. I am a loyal Mud Bay customer for a decade but never really felt any definite reasons that I need to shop here by paying a premium price. However, I shop my stuff at WholeFoods, so I thought it is natural for me to shop for my cat at Mud Bay. Few weeks ago, unfortunately I found a foreign material from one of my cat's favorite canned food. Good I caught the object before I feed my cat. I immediately reported to the manufacture but did not get a response right away. So, I reported to the Mud Bay corporate office, they response back to me within an hour and got the manufacture involved. I understand, those things happened even though manufacture has good quality assurance guideline in place. The investigation is still underway, I hope this was an isolated case. The manufacture seems very responsible too but without having Mud Bay contacted the manufacture, I don't know if my case got the same level of attention from the manufacture. The lady at the Mud Bay corporate office was very knowledgeable and really knows what's most important to a consumer. Her sense of urgency and personalized responses gave me a piece of mind. She also gives me couple of suggestions on alternate canned foods, and offered me full refund of used/unused inventory from the same brand. I went back to the Ballard store to get refund. I briefly explained the issue. Without giving a full detail, they acknowledged the trouble that I needed to go through and sympatric about the foreign material that I found. They quickly refund the money and giving me several samples from other brands to try out. Ballard store is my store but I also shop other Mud Bay stores from time to time. All locations, they are consistently have knowledgeable, professional staff always there to help and educate a responsible pet owners. I've shopped at All The Best in Queen Anne and Ballard location, but they are less helpful and limited selections. All The Best have reward program but Mud Bay doesn't. However, I found myself end up spending more for what I won't need from All The Best, they are little hard sell though. In addition to that, All the Best in Queen Anne and Ballard does not have any parking spaces but Mud Bay Ballard and U village are both located in a very convenience location with plenty of parking spaces! Seattle really has some great pet supply stores and Mud Bay is one of them. I have shopped at Mud Bay numerous times since getting my dog and each visit is a positive one. The staff is always friendly and they usually give me some samples of treats. They have a really good selection of toys, leashes, and food. I also like that they are open late. My name is Nomis. I am 3-year old flame tip siamese. Whenever I need food, litter, wheatgrass, catnip, or my favorite treat Greenies my mommy goes to Mud Bay. She thinks they're the greatest pet store in the whole world! She really loves that they focus on cats and dogs and loves the brands of they carry. She says the litter she buys from their stores makes me less stinky, whatever. I think she's the stinky one. She brings me lots of locally made cat toys that are filled with catnip and I love love love them!! Apparently I've gained a little too much weight lately. I don't see it. But the reduced calorie food she feeds from their store is just as delicious as the regular stuff (who knew?!) and I don't notice a difference at all.
