I knew I needed to update this review after hiking some of the trails in order to escape my own home during COVID-19. I've long been a fan of Mt. Airy Forest for how untouched it feels. On a run that turned into a walk (cause homegirl needs to run more, apparently), I was able to walk a couple of trails. Both of them were pretty well maintained. I will say that if you're hiking within a day or two of rain, wear hiking boots or prepare to get your shoes muddy. I have to imagine that these trails are a little muddy more often than they are not. As long as it isn't too wet thought you can relatively easily jump and skip around the muddiest parts to keep your shoes clean. If you don't want to get muddy at all, there's tons of pavement to walk and some areas are blocked off to traffic. During Covid-19, it was great to see folks out and about enjoying the great outdoors. I have always wanted to give disc golf a try and definitely want to make plans to come try out the course at Mt. Airy Forest.

I want to love this place because it's beautiful! I hope they improve the website to be more informative though. Depending on your reason for visiting, it would be nice to know which entrance to take and where to park. For instance, hiking vs. biking... or simply visiting the arboretum. The website is not very clear. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! https://www.cincinnatiparks.com/west/mt-airy-forest/ News (10/2019) and fun facts from the website: New Mt. Airy Multi-Use Bike Trail!! In partnership with CORA (Cincinnati Off-Road Alliance) the first 1.4-mile section of the new Mt. With 100+ events hosted each year, there is something for everyone to come down and enjoy. Park History Mt. Airy Forest is Cincinnati's largest park at almost 1,500 acres. It was established in 1911 out of several unproductive farms, and was the first municipal reforestation in America. A crew of young African Americans were employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (a federal jobs program during the Great Depression) to build service roads, the large check dams in West Fork Creek and--along with more skilled laborers working for the Works Progress Administration--most of the shelter, service and restroom buildings. They also planted more than one million trees. Mt. Airy Arboretum is a 120 acres of which Cincinnati Parks curates and tagged 30 acres of gardens, woody vines, shrubs and trees hardy to the Cincinnati Area. Features within the arboretum are gazebos and a picturesque lake which are favorite photo and wedding sites.

This is a fantastic park structure in Cincinnati. First, it's huge!!! It has so many trail options at varrying difficulty levels. But the biggest draw is likely "everybody's treehouse". It's a beautiful tree house that is wheelchair accessible so that physically disabled guests can enjoy it as well. There is also an area called "the oval" with a large playground area for children. This would be a great place for a picnic or group outing or just for a hike in the woods.

This spot has been on my list for a while. The weather was so mild today that I decided to check it out. It's such a peaceful and huge park. My dog and I truly enjoyed the walk through the woods, and we eventually found the famous treehouse for all (pictured). It hasn't rained in a few days, but I can see how it would get realllllly muddy on the trails in the woods. I do wish the trails had better descriptions and were marked better; they were a tad overgrown as well. I'll definitely go back.

This was my first visit to Mt. Airy Forest, and it won't be my last. I went on a 4.5 mile hike, and saw only a small portion of the trails through this giant park. I really appreciated how well marked all of the trails were. At every intersection there is a signpost and the signage is great about pointing toward landmarks in the park like the oval and the treehouse as well as parking and picnic areas. The "E" trail is marked with white hashes on the trees, which is convenient. I was weaving back and forth between multiple trails, but there seems to be something for everyone as far as hiking. I walked several flat, wide trails as well as some very tough, vertical ones (those stone steps are no joke!). The forest itself is gorgeous and I'm not very bird-saavy, but it seems to be a great place to bird watch. Even my untrained eye identified a bevy of cardinals and a couple of woodpeckers along the trail. Even though it was a busy spring day, I only encountered maybe ten other people on the trails making for a very peaceful hike. The treehouse is very cool, and totally accessible. I didn't stick around to grill or picnic, but the park was packed with families having cookouts... something on my to do list.

Tons of shaded spots for picnics!

Want to escape the city but can't afford a trip? Check out this AMAZING and HUGE park! Trails, disc golf, a treehouse, playground, and so much more! Half of the park isn't dog friendly, so we had to skip that side, but the rest was great! We hiked trail E-H to the oval. Our original spot for a picnic happened to be in the middle of the disc golf course, so we had to move, but it was nice while it lasted. Notes: the garden area is a dog free zone. NO alcohol. It gets busy on nice days, so be prepared for human traffic.

Seriously, this blurry mess of a copy of a copy of a copy is the best the park can provide for a trail map?

Sounded like a nice place for a hike, until we actually got there... - All bathrooms were "CLOSED FOR THE SEASON" on a lovely mid-50-degree day in the fall? - Couldn't find decent directions or trail map, either online or anywhere at the park? - Every trail in the park was closed with a big red warning sign due to deer hunting season? Go somewhere else!

Ask the Community - Mt. Airy Forest

What time does the park close?

Last time I was there which was the in the Spring I saw a sign saying it closed at dusk.

I've heard there's a dog park here, does anyone know where in the park it is located?

A wonderful location to view the bustling activity along The Ohio River Trail, and a place to gather and celebrate as a community. The park boasts multiple water play features, giant swings, an interactive foot piano, an imaginative play area for kids, expansive pollinator gardens, and Carol Ann's Carousel. Several historical monuments can be found like the Black Brigade Monument and the recently dedicated Marian Spencer Statue. I was on a roadtrip and my family dropped me off in downtown Cincinnati and I gravitated to Smale Riverfront Park because I wanted a place to explore nature and see river views. I explored the scenic walkways along the Ohio, flower gardens, fountains, public art, picnic spots, and plenty of space to just chill. One of my favorite features were the riverfront swings, big, bench-style swings tucked along the water that are perfect for kicking back and enjoying the view. They're surprisingly comfortable and such a great spot to unwind and reconnect with your inner child. The park has amazing views of the Roebling Suspension Bridge and Ohio River are worth the visit on their own, the paths are wide and great for families, and there's lots to explore without feeling overcrowded. There are splash zones for kids, places to sit and picnic, and tons of photo ops.
