Got me a new bike! Thanks to Mr. Larry and Greg's assistance. I called them to see what inventory they had on high performance foldable bikes. When I arrived they had 3 ready for me to hit the road on a test ride. This was my 2nd foldable bike, but my 1st high performance one, so I wanted something that I could grow into skill- wise. I got on a Brompton which felt amazing to the tune of $3,200 (a bit out of my price range). After all my research, I thought I would leave with a Montague, but the ride was just mid and the style wasn't cool. But when they put me on the Dahon-the ride was smooth, there was easy access to speed, and the gears handy to my fingers to switch. Like a 10 year old, I hollered out "I want this one!!!" Light weight, made of aluminum, attractive, modern, slightly used, and still under warranty, they gave it to me for $200 under the market price value. I highly recommend Mount Airy Bicycles, with over 6,000 bikes in inventory, you're bound to find something especially for you. Customer service and knowledge were top notch. Larry predicted that I would get the Dahon. Greg showed me all the mechanics of the bike before I left and we added a drink holder. I'll be back in a little under a year for a check up. I recommend this shop because they carry a good variety. It's pricey though and they don't honor discounts or price matching. They're doing something right, been in business forever. Treated my aunt so poorly on the phone when she asked him questions while shopping for a bike. The service is legendary. They work with you wherever you are. I ride an old Fuji that had the shift levers on the down tube and wanted to upgrade to bar end shifters. Other bike stores were more interested in selling me a new bike than doing this work. Once seeing I was not buying that story, that bike shop recommended Mt. Airy Bicycles for this more challenging work. This upgrade was done effectively, economically and promptly and I am delighted with the outcome as it makes that bike much more enjoyable to ride. Know that I go more than 20 miles out of my way to this shop because it is staffed by seasoned professionals with more years of experience than most bike store technicians are old. Tip: when entering I check myself to realize that they know more about bicycles than I do, so I listen to what they have to say, and I always learn something. read more

Horrible experience, dealing with the owner who talks to people like they are beneath him or that he has no time for them, and if he does spend time with you, then you owe him horrible experience, bought a bike everything was filthy, covered within stink bugs and dust, and they couldn't find the parts to go with the bike to finish the purchase so I decide just get my money back and never go there again you should too. read more

Time for an update to earlier review, of BIKE 123.com also known as Mt. Airy Bicycles. As noted by many reviewers, this is a true pedal bikers store, for the purist. Its not fancy, not presumptuous and they actually ride what they sell. If you are interesed in purchasing a bike or learning about cycling or just curious about the evolution of bikes over the years this is the place to visit. Driving this review, was a recent visit on Memorial Day Weekend for a ad-hoc tire repair. Needless to say on a holiday weekend most "name brand" bike stores are closed or too busy for in my case, tubless tire leaking air, in need of repair. After calling around and confirming that on a holiday weekend Sunday afternoon, which was perfect for riding, the stores that I thought might be open were not. Recalling that I visited this store before, I wondered if by chance they might be open and willing to accomidate a tire repair. Well of course they are! The primo rider/sales/mechanic at this location "Larry" answered my call and told me to bring it over. Wow, what a pleasant suprise, a bike store, open on weekends thats available for no-notice repairs. On arrival I took the wheel off and handed it over to the other in house pro here at Bike123, "John" and the repair was completed in rapid fashion. I even had enough time to brouse arouund at the huge and I mean huge selection of bikes in stock. From road, to recumbent, to full suspension, to daily drivers this store has it all. Considering the times and modernization of virtually all business, its refreshingly welcome to find a true gem in the rough bike shop like this, that takes all comers, doesnt shy away from hard work and just gets the job done at a resonable price. This Raleigh Lore eBike is going to end up costing me double because I don't want to get off it to go to work. This is a game changer for this 59 yr. old. I can tell you I've been a cyclist since my parents bought me that purple Schwinn stingray in 1967 but I've never enjoyed a bike more. It's power assisted so I'm still riding, just gives me a boost when I want one. Most times it's in the "off" setting. The staff here are fun and knowledgeable. Bought a bike computer camera and after 3 months the light stopped working. I submitted an online ticket to the manufacturer and no response in 4 days. I then called up Mt. Airy Bicycles who I bought and from and the manager told me to bring it in and he'll swap it for me. I'm now a happy and satisfied customer and will be going back to the bike shop in the future. Was going to rent an old three wheel trek called blue ice....after they tried me on one not equipped for back injuries....i got off aching. I asked if they would have accommodations for my handicapped disabilities for this 2nd one....they did not fulfill the bill....no padding for the seat(burlap on frame...not handicap equipped no headrest either)....I paid the asked price they quoted today while still they were working on the bike. (Earlier I called ahead this past Monday it was $169.99 a wk rental through not knowing what bike they would have available!) I paid $199.99 today, I waited to see if my request was to be fulfilled after paying....IT WAS NOT....I asked for refund within 10 minutes. WASTED TIME....BUT NOT MY $$$$$$. read more

While a lot of people seem to really love this place, I was less than impressed. It has pros and cons, but I think the cons heavily outweigh the pros. We will start with the good aspects of the shop: it has a giant selection of all sorts of bikes. Particularly this shop is one of the few places around that specializes in tandem cycles. They had a a lot of new and used road bikes, mountain bikes, fixies, commuters, bmx and practically any parts you could think of. They also had a really cool collection of old steel racers hanging from the ceiling just like their other shop in College Park. This collection included a Proteus frame (another shop in College Park who made their own steel frames in the 70's) The staff was friendly Now for the bad: The prices!!! I was looking at some of the used bikes and parts and getting price quotes that were often over MSRP for the same product new. Few of the bikes were marked with prices, so you had to ask the employees (which lead to wildly outrageous quotes). An example was a fairly beat up Cannondale CAAD7 which they priced just under $50 less than a brand new CAAD9. Then I decided that I could use another pair of pedals and asked about their used LOOK selection. As I went through a filing drawer full of old, outdated LOOK pedals, the person who seemed to be in charge was quoting me $150 for some giant, heavy pedals that weren't even KEO (LOOK's newest type of pedal and cleat system). You can buy LOOK Keo Classics for less than $150 new. When I asked if the pedals would work with my Keo cleats he immediately assured me they would. Upon further research online, they would not have (good thing I didn't buy them). They have a great selection and it is a fun place just to look around but I would be hard pressed to actually buy anything from Mt Airy Cycles simply because their prices are outrageous. I'm sure I could have haggled them down some but I doubt enough to make it worth it. Also while the older gentleman who seemed to be in charge (and possibily the owner) was very friendly, he was looking to make a sale more than he was looking to get me the right gear. read more

Well, I had read some bad reviews about this bike shop in Mount Airy, but because they had a larger inventory - and a place to try out bikes - my friend and I drove from Silver Spring to Mount Airy to try out some trikes. We called the shop a day ahead and spoke with Larry about coming in and trying out a couple of "old lady" trikes. I told Larry what we were looking for and he said he would have some for us to try and that we should be there between noon and 4pm. We had done a lot of homework about trikes for adults and went to the shop with some understanding of the trikes, different brands and pricing. Let me say that the bad reviews I had read about this place we're NOT about the employees - and not even about the bikes themselves - they were pretty much negative in response to Larry and his demeanor toward customers. We went with an open mind and thought that we could narrow down our choices. Neither of us expected to be so disrespected and dismissed by this man. When I asked him if he had any trikes for us to try, he was almost annoyed that we asked. There was one very used one on the lot that was not even assembled well and he motioned for us to go get it and to try it out in the parking lot. I asked him about a style called the Tri-rider that I had found on the Internet that was made in Canada and now being made in the United States and had great reviews. He did not even look at me as he sneered and said that this bike was called a boomerang bike, because they always came back to the shop. He said that before he even saw the picture or anything. As a matter of fact, he wasn't even familiar with the Tri-riders themselves. He just said that. Not once did he look at us as he spoke. My friend and I talked with 2 employees who WERE extremely nice, Willie and Mike. These two guys were helpful, kind and considerate. As we were leaving, Larry came out from the back to tell an employee to do something or other (and not in a nice way) and I asked him if it was possible to see any other trikes. He said, "Well, if you want a heavy bike that is hard to steer and unresponsive, we have some in another location, but they are hard to get to and transport." He said that he would need at least a days notice. I kindly reminded him that we did give him a days notice and we were here because he told us to be here when we spoke yesterday. He sneered again and walked away. Say what? My friend and I got on my phone and Googled other bike shops on our way home and we stopped at one and called another. What's funny is that both owners of these shops had either worked with Larry or knew Larry. And both of them corroborated our impression of him. I guess what is sad is that my friend and I will definitely find the right bike or trike for us, but this man's total disrespect for customers and employees will probably not change. He probably has a very successful business just because of the volume of inventory and the amount of used bikes he has on the property. More power to him. As for me and my friend? We would rather be respected and acknowledged as customers then to be treated as less than significant. Kudos, Willie and Mike and the other employees who put up with Larry's crap. You definitely earn your paycheck! Weird how everyone in the "biz" had the same impression as well. What does that say? Overpriced used bikes, but large available inventory. Airy Bikes and have the misfortune to speak with Larry and tell him you are looking for a used bike and want to spend up to $200 he will respond in a voice dripping with sarcasm that : - the only bikes he has in that range are the ones he is giving to the "needy". -$200 is about what you pay for a tank of gas -for $200 I might be able to buy a 3 speed from the seventies -I should save up my money until I can afford a real bike His voice was a bit muffled. I haven't purchased from there yet, but I was just there testing out recumbent trikes for my autistic son. They are quirkey. Owner said he was off the charts ADHD, so yes, he is easily distracted, but he knows bikes. He's been doing it all his life and will probably get you set up well. I can't say much about prices, but I've been looking on Craigslist and other shops and bikes new or used, especially specialty bikes are pricey period. One nice thing - you can rent a bike for a week, a month, a year... how many places can you do that??? read more

If I could give this place a lower rating I would. I have no idea how this place stays in business. Every bike is over priced or not priced at all and subject to the whim of Larry. Larry is the shop's owner. He is totally lacking in professionalism, customer service, respect, and honesty... Hey Larry, I traded that Klein Mantra Race to you in 2001 for a Klein Quantum Race, I know it never went to Nationals.... You lie to be able to jack up the price, nice business model. Hope that works out for you. I let that slide because I wanted a bike so I looked further, They pointed me to another bike. Another used bike with no price tag on and no one but Larry could tell me how much it costs. When I asked it took him a bit of time and a phone call or two to finally come up with a price. Considering it was used I asked if there was room to work, He immediately because sarcastic and disrespectful and offered a higher price. I guess I didn't warrant a bit of respect and to be treated like an adult. He then started throwing numbers around and acting like he was doing me a favor.... Larry, after 28 years of military service I have learned one thing.... If someone is acting like they are doing me a favor they probably aren't... Pay attention to your surroundings. My son was standing next to me.... That was probably your one saving grace. I wasn't going to lose my professionalism and composure in front of my son. But, he sure got a fine example of what a piece of shit you are. If my money wasn't good enough to garner your attention to make a potential sale I will take it elsewhere. This bike shop is great--but you need to ask for Greg. Greg only works Saturdays (after noon) and it's worth waiting until then to visit the shop. The shop has a great selection of bikes (old and used) and gear, but someone needs to retrieve the bikes and other items for you. Greg is very personable and always in a good mood. He's extremely knowledgeable about bikes--including recumbent bikes. And he doesn't try to sell you the most expensive bike or accessories that you don't need. He gives you plenty of time to try out bikes and encourages people to think about their purchase--rather than rushing into anything. I suggest, however, that you call the store and make sure that Greg's around and available to help before heading to the shop. read more

If you have good memories of the old fashioned bike shops from the '60s and '70s, you'll be okay. But if you're looking for something more efficient, service oriented and contemporary, forget it. This place is cluttered, chaotic, old-fashioned, and frankly, dingy. I've been in here a few times and the staff don't know what they had in stock, and on two separate occasions, I got *NO* service despite asking for help - when all I wanted was a few inner tubes. Instead of pushing me toward a purchase right away they suggested that I come back and rent one or two of these bikes for longer, many-hour test rides to see which one really felt best to me. Pros - pretty good selection, both new and used. Cons - super high prices on almost everything. Deal Breaker - absolutely horrific customer service, patronize and mock customers under the guise of "quirky attitude", which really translates "they're dicks." Summary - Funny, because I've told my wife about this place, and my couple of attempts to go there over the years, hoping each time something would change for the better (it never has). So she went there, and came home livid "they treated me horribly, patronizing me, treating me as if I knew nothing about bikes, as if I was inconveniencing them!." Larry and his elder crew are complete jerks, unless you love being the target of mockery and scorn, and thus describe him as having a "quirky attitude". (The younger kids are friendly and will help if you ask them.) I will NEVER shop there again, and will warn everyone about their horrific customer service and attitudes, and recommend basically ANY OTHER BIKE SHOP but this one. Larry and co. saved my vacation! I injured my hand one week before a planned biking trip with another couple, biking part of the Erie Canal. I could not ride a two wheeled bike with one hand. What to do? Find a tricycle recumbent! My Airy was the only bike shop in the DC area that had one to rent. Having never ridden one, Larry and his bike tech (sorry, forgot his name) gave me ample time to test drive several 'bents in the adjacent huge parking lot. They spent lots of time making sure the bike and seat were adjusted correctly, then loaded it into my Prius. The rental rate was very reasonable. The bike rode beautifully during our trip, both on flat and some hilly terrain, and I was the envy of the group as my butt was never sore at the end of the day! Customer service here was great - Larry even called me before my trip to add some information. I would definitely recommend Mt Airy Bikes. read more

Not a good experience at all. I've been to practically all the shops in the area looking for a good fitting bike and wasn't impressed at all with this shop. Felt rushed and that I was an inconvenience when I asked for prices on the unpriced bikes hanging outside. The guy got insulted when I said that 2003 was used when he insisted it was brand new. Prices were extremely high on the used gear, way above market. When I pointed out that 5 year old used bike with 105 components cost significantly more than the equivalent new bike they had hanging up next to it the reply was a short "ok, let's get you into the new one then." I won't ever be buying a bike from this shop. Sorry to have wasted my time gong here. There are better options all over the place. read more

I have to agree with the other review. On the positive side, I went there and tried recument bikes for a few hours. Staff was great and helpful and the owner Larry let me ride anywhere with no issue. Great. However, on the downside, I found pricing to be at list or over on almost all the bikes/trikes even where they were used. And candidly, Larry did not seem interested in any give or take on price. The reality is if list on a discontinued item is $2500 he was willing to take $2450 and warrant an item as new (which said it was not new). I just thought that was too expensive. So great place to try bikes and trikes and they could not have been nicer. It was just getting from that to an actual sale. I had done my research and knew pricing. If you don't you may end up very pleased. read more

I regret having driven an hour from DC to go to this place. I went because they were the only authorized dealer in the area of a folding bike I was interested in. The owner was friendly enough to me initially and sent me on a test ride on the bike. I liked it and came back ready to buy it. However, when I got back, the owner was talking to someone else and simply ignored me. No problem--another guy came up and asked if I needed help. I asked if he could show me how the bike folds down (the whole point of a folding bike), and instead of showing me on the bike sitting right in front of me, he smugly said that I should go home and look on YouTube to see how it folds. I left, walked out into the parking lot, and bought the bike on Amazon on my iPhone... At a significantly lower price. Please don't waste your time going here--these guys obviously don't care about your, or my, business. read more

Went to this shop yesterday to look at a recreational bicycle so I could ride with my wife on the C@O Canal Trail. The salesman was nice and showed me several selection and let me test ride them to narrow my search. I settled on a Gary Fisher and we went in to talk to the owner -- Larry. Here is were is turned ugly. When we approached the work area, Larry was cleaning a bicycle in the work stand with several old timers standing around while a kid hacked away on the computer. The salesman asked Larry about the price and tried to make a joke about me wanting to pay more for the bike then sticker. I laughed. My wife, who has been a successful business owner, asked if the price was firm or if Larry could do better then list. Larry launches into a rant about having to pay $130 dollars in gas last week and had to buy food, etc. He said he would never had thought about asking the gas station attended for a break on the price. He was out of line as a business owner. His only response should have been "No, that is as low as I can go" period. Larry is an unprofessional, condescending old man that does not deserve anyone's business in this area. He was disrespectful and out of line to my wife and to me. He acted like a school boy bully in front of his staff, if that is what you call them. Then he proceeds to tell me that I can get 20 percent off accessories after I purchased the bike, but that only lasted until 5 pm. Then, the salesman told my wife that they would throw in a jersey that was given to the shop only to be be little by Larry in the back room and told that he would have to purchase the jersey then tell me that he had to buy it for me. I told the salesman to cancel the sell and we walked out. I cannot believe that Larry, the founder as he calls himself, can act this way and there are people out that praise him for his support of cycling. I find him arrogant, unprofessional, and disrespectful especially to women. After leaving, I called Larry to voice my concern over the way he treated my wife and all he could say is that is the way I have been for 20 years. No offer of an apology. Just see ya. For those of you that support Larry, I feel sorry for you because there are so many more bicycle shops out there that deserve the communities support then Mt Airy Bicycle Shop. Support the shops that make a difference and treat people with respect, not like dirt. Larry, I will never buy a bike or anything from your shop....ever, and I will make sure that all my contacts in the military community know what you did and how you treat people. read more

My personal experience was as bad as it gets. I purchased 2 bikes, one for me and one for my wife (paid for them actually but didn't take them with us). After we left, we did a bit of comparison shopping and discovered that the 2- and 5-year old models that we paid for were still being sold for list price. Other shops had the same bikes at discounted prices. We went to the shop and explained this to the owner who immediately began treating us like trash. He said that he would rather return our money than negotiate price or lower the price. He actually accused me of being a thief ("your credit card is probably stolen. For all I know you're probably one of those identity thieves" were his words). In reality, I work for the FBI. I tried to show him my ID and business card, but he continued treating us like garbage. However, if you are looking for a place to try out some exotic bike, head on over. He actually likes having other kids come over and play with his toys. He just doesn't want to sell you any of his toys. The Good: The store has LOTS of selection, in regular bikes as well as recumbents and trikes. The staff is very "hit or miss", meaning that some are very friendly and helpful and others reflect the horrible attitude of the owner. The owner also apparently sponsors a number of bicycling events, both monetarily as well as "in kind" sponsorships. The Bad: Customer service is a ZERO. They NEVER discount a bike. In fact the owner said to me that he would rather throw a bike in the dumpster than sell it at a discount. I don't understand that attitude, but don't go here looking for a bargain. Bottom Line: I would rather crawl 100 miles, on my hands and knees, across broken glass rather than EVER give these people a penny of my money. True story. read more

This is not a place I would encourage anyone to look for bicycle of any type for the following reasons. After a phone inquiry, I was told that yes they has a particular brand of used trike in stock and it was basically new and had about 8 miles on it. I was told the trike also had an electric motor on it and I indicated I was not interested in that. I was told they could remove it. So i asked how much without the motor and what did the trike come with. I was quoted one price and told this trike had ever possible option. So I said great send me some pictures. I was told well I am real busy right now but send me a direct email and I will get you some pictures this afternoon. We just took this trike in and its over at the warehouse and I am going over there right now. I said fine and sent the email. Of course I did not get the pictures that afternoon so I called back. The person that promised them had stepped out, so I left a message I was waiting for the pictures. The next day still no pictures so I called back again. Same deal, person who was supposed to take them has stepped out. Finally last that afternoon I got a snap shot of a Trike that was buried in a bunch of other bikes in a warehouse. I put the picture in photo-shop and blew it up trying to see and much as I could. I could tell this was not a new bike and could hardly see the Trike. So I emailed back and asked for more pictures without the Trike being buried, and also the serial number of the Trike so I could actually figure out the date of manufacture. The fellow I was dealing with went on to tell me that this Trike would cost me over $9000 new and I wrote back and said well I have the manufacturers current price sheet. A few days later the Pictures finally came. A note also came saying they never reveal a bikes serial number. After examining the pictures I could tell that this bike had been in storage for a while because there were cables that were disconnected, and it appeared that there might be some shifter cables missing. Also the tops of the rubber hand grips that covers the round ends metal tubing of the under the seat handle bars appeared to be either cut off or missing. I was told he had this bike for three weeks and collapsed the boom and disconnected the cables for storage purposes. I personally own two of these trikes already and I know its not necessary to do this. I also know from the first picture he sent me from the warehouse where the trike was packed in with other bikes the boom was not collapsed. In other words the fellow from the shop tried to mislead me several times during our phone conversations, and emails. The pricing increased over $1500 from where he started. When I pointed out that the reason I asked for a serial number was so I could date the trike because I was comparing it to another that I found while I was waiting for the pictures, he told me that I should pursue the other because he wanted to sell his to someone that did not ask so many questions. Can you believe it LOL! When I said OK and agreed, he got upset! I guess he did not believe there was another trike. If you are going to spend over $5000 on a Trike you are going to ask questions and make sure you are getting what you are supposed to get. You certainly want to know what year it is, and you certainly want to know you are getting what the dealer or seller told you. No one spending that much money like to be misled. Anyway, after I told I would pursue the other bike, he told me to stay in touch if I needed anything else. I told him I would and I thought he was a real class act. Then this guy writes back and threatens me and says that my comments about misleading someone about the trike because he said it was in good condition and only had 8 mile on it when it clearly did not and was not in good condition was uncalled for, and was going to circulate to all the other independent bike dealers he knew. Since email is normally a private and personal communication he will once again prove how much of a class act he really is, and I hope he tells the whole story about how he attempted to pull a fast one by misleading customer who was shopping but got caught.
