First time ordering from Mrs. Chen's Kitchen and it was just OK... the soups were really disappointing! The Wonton Soup was tasteless, the broth had no flavor at all and the Wonton was soggy and gross. The Egg Drop Soup was also pretty tasteless, would never order these soups again. The General Tso's Chicken was pretty good, the portion size plentiful, the Vegetable Fried Rice was very good and the portion size was also plentiful. I moved from North Carolina to Arlington in June 2013 and ordered from Mrs. Chen's because of the flyers plastered all over my apartment complex. The food wasn't bad, and was about par for the course when compared to other places I've eaten across the globe. I ordered from this restaurant once or twice a week for about three months until "the incident" happened. I got my usual order of General Tso's chicken and fried rice, but this time after I had eaten about half the container of rice, I dumped the rest out onto my plate and found a German cockroach in the middle of my rice. After about five minutes of trying not to vomit, I called the restaurant and let them them know what happened. The worst part of the ordeal was that I got the impression from the worker on the phone that this was no surprise. The exterior and interior of this establishment is deplorable. I once had the displeasure of ordering from this so-called Chinese Carryout. Szechuan Chicken and egg rolls. The dish was packaged in a quart size container comprised of a reddish liquid, chicken cubes and diced carrots. The egg roll was greasy. I requested an immediate refund. My departing words to other patrons was to not waste their money. Please note that if you only order fried rice and fried chicken wings, you don't care what you eat. I noticed to roach carcass as I left. This place needs to be inspected by the Virginia Health Department. Hopefully with all the growth on Columbia Pike they will be priced off the pike. AVOID THIS PLACE IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH. SERIOUSLY. This used to be my go-to place for good cheap chinese food but not anymore. I have been coming to this place for the past 16ish years since I moved down the street and these people even knew already who I was most of the time when I ordered and the deal with where to bring the food to my house and all. My point being is they knew I was a long time customer that never gave any problems what so ever. But, two weeks ago I ordered my same ole order of egg drop soup and shrimp chow fun and it tastes fine UNTIL I BIT INTO GLASS. After I was about 1/3rd of the way through my noodles I bit into something so hard that shattered in my mouth and I worried that there were rocks in my meal until I looked down and saw the visible GLASS IN MY FOOD and when I spit out the food in my mouth there were shards in it. I couldn't believe it! So since I loved the place so much and didn't want to really cause a fuss I called over there and asked for a replacement and let them know there was glass in my food. They gave me NO APOLOGY and tried to FORCE ME TO PAY for them to come get the glass laden one and drop off a glass free replacement. She just gave me tons of attitude over the phone and when the food came, the veggies were not cooked. Some veggies weren't even sliced! I had like seriously 1/4th of a long carrot in there and like a whole raw onion just halved, the big flat rice noodles were not even cooked, they were too hard to even eat and the entire dish had zero sauce so it was just uncooked noodles and halved massive chunks of pretty much raw veggies. I cant believe considering my family and I have come in for years here that after all this time they would treat me this way. This nasty treatment is just deplorable an GLASS IN YOUR FOOD IS A HEALTH HAZARD. Avoid this place like the plague, they clearly are just rude and care NOT for the safety of their food. P.S. The food was edible but I'd stop at that. I ordered Kung Pao Chicken - I've never had that dish with water chestnuts, carrots, and baby corn. That was the majority of the dish...no peppers and very little chicken. I wondered if they got my order wrong, but I ordered it online so there was no confusion about what I had said and they wrote the name of the dish on the take out container. Food is average. First delivery went well. Second delivery they forgot something. I called and they were nice about it and said they'd bring it asap. Took about 40 minutes and I was done with my food but stuff happens. Third order they forgot something again. I called and was told they definitely included it. I said that was not the case and the person on the phone became irate and insisted I was wrong, I hung up. They called back a few minutes later and insisted I must have found it, I again said no. They said they'd send the driver back to check and I said dont worry, just stop with this and hung up. They called again a few minutes later and said they'd be coming back to drop it off. A full 40 minutes later, long after I finished, someone showed up at my door "explaining" that it was their drivers fault, not hers. Wouldn't let me close the door and then my dog ran out..... Tl;dr food ok but service awful so just go with one of the other 20 some chinese restaurants in the area. TNR is really good and worth the extra cash if you like to eat your food in one sitting instead of waiting 40 minutes between courses. read more

The food is copiuos, and crappy. The vegetable egg foo young was okay (though the sauce was awful). The shrimp with veggies was actually not terrible. I don't eat meat, but my son is a connoisseur of sweet and sour chicken. He threw his meal away--said it was inedible. the chicken was lost in a sea of dough, and the sauce was horrible. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken, expecting to get the usual onion/peppers/pineapple pieces added in like every other Chinese restaurant, but I did not receive that. I've never eaten inside, only ordered take-out/delivery. The delivery is SUPER fast. They have their own parking lot with sufficent parking. The food is good, better than the other chinese places around here. I took one star off only because once for delivery I asked for a soda, which I paid for, but it wasn't in the bag. And once the sweet and sour sauce (which I always get) was not good. It tasted like pineapples and I had to add sugar myself to make it edible. But that was once out of probably 20+ times I've eaten here, so I still go back. They also don't take American Express, which is always annoying to me. read more

I've eaten at Mrs Chen's a number of times, living less than a mile away; depending on moon phase, I'll either take out or get delivery. Fair to middling is pretty much the standard for "fast Chinese," though most do have at least a couple of things they do very well and a lot of things they do poorly. This place earns three stars from me, which would be two stars if not for the fact that two of the things I like best happen to be things they do well. Hot and sour is my favorite soup of all time. Every Chinese place does it a little bit different, but most of the quick places at the very least substitute cheap domestic ingredients for the more traditional ones, or (worst) leave out a critical piece (usually the dried lily buds). Typically, the broths will be either over-starched (too thick) or over seasoned (not allowing the chicken flavor to come through). Mrs Chen's, by those criteria, has the least offensive hot and sour of any local competition in their price range. They do use cheap domestic white mushrooms, but other than that the soup is made with a good flavorful broth, properly viscous, and the ingredients are appropriate (compared with the low point in my hot and sour career, which included a sample of watery disposition and with CARROT STICKS). This is also the only place in town I've found that still uses lily buds, which are in my opinion the make or break ingredient - their inclusion can forgive other minor omissions or shortcuts. I also love chow mein. The previous reviewer who pointed out that the it had no noodles was exactly right - luckily, chow mein isn't served with noodles (other than the crispy noodles you get in the little wax paper bag). The chow mein here is totally acceptable if you like veggie or chicken... the beef here is gristle and they don't de-vein the shrimp. As to the other dishes, my friends who have ordered delivery at my house from them generally agree that the fare is pretty much standard and acceptable, saving for the aforementioned beef and shrimp issues. In other words, if you're generally ok with quick Chinese on a budget, and are careful what you pick, Mrs Chen most likely won't disappoint you. read more

2.5. The sesame chicken was really drenched in sweet sauce. The white cuts of meat were a lot better than the dark, which were chewy. You get what you pay for. 20 years ago my buddy suggested ordering from Mrs C. His take then - and true today - lots of decent food for very little $. His caveat, "Don't eat there, just do takeout," is true today as it was 20 years ago. Food quality does vary. Saturday and Sunday nights expect worse quality and portions. On nights when the Mrs is there (you get to know her voice on the phone), you can expect a bit better. No need to order a large - the small is just as much. My favorites: twice cooked pork, beef with hot pepper sauce, combination lo mein. Their hot and sour soup is excellent IMO. If you want decent inexpensive delivery Chinese, it's hard to beat Mrs Chen. read more

Mrs. Chen's is the only delivery place in this neighborhood my boyfriend will eat, which makes me really sad and my tummy unhappy. Mrs. Chen's is FAST, which I guess is a good point. We joke that the food comes five minutes before I've called and made the order. The people on the phone and the delivery people are always very kind and their service is prompt and curteous. The food is okay, if you're a fan of places like McDonalds or Panda Express. It's greasy, heavy, and made out of frozen meats and vegetables. I usually order a side order of rice and some sweet and sour sauce, which they charge me 5$ for, but it's the only thing I can eat from there without feeling ill. I've never gotten food poisoning or anything, but I'm not used to such greasy, salty, heavy food. If you like cheap delivery and you're not concerned about the grease, you'll probably love it. If you're used to a little more substance in your diet, try Bangkok 54 or Manee Thai. read more

Rude Staff. We ordered a lunch special and the lady on the phone "assumed" we wanted a dinner size. She never asked and never told us our total either. plus who has dinner at 1pm!? We told her the website said the lunch special was $6.95 for one meal and $7.25 for another, she claimed they changed the menu and they never had what we ordered on the lunch special but it clearly said it on their website!... the lady on the phone never apologized nor gave us a refund of the difference. she even hung up the phone!!
