After many months of interviewing for the right roofing contractor, because I needed a contractor to reroof my old 3-layered shingled roof, which had many leaks. I needed to replace the 10 year old solar fan and fix up a problematic section of the roof which accumulated water and sediment. I was fortunate to select the best roofing contractor in Honolulu, MRC Roofing. Not only did they step up to the challenge, they far exceeded my expectations in workmanship and superior materials, at a competitive price. When the job started, I spent the next 2 days watching a huge team of workers transform my roof. They were able to redesign a low spot in my roof that collected water. They installed new lumber construction to create a new slope with the proper pitch to solve the low spot problem. MRC installed a second layer of underlayment free of charge. They installed a free solar attic fan as a promotional item. They were able to provide me with an extended labor and material warranty for ten cents per square foot because they are shingle factory certified installers. MRC coordinated with my hot water solar contractor so that close timeline scheduling would be possible, and my hot water panels wouldn't be offline too long. MRC was able to access my 3-story roof, and they maneuvered around my existing PV system without having to detach and reset my PV panels. My roof had three layers of old brittle shingles that were cracking off in the wind. The new Malarkey shingles have a rubber component in the asphalt that will keep them pliable for the long term, and the extended warranty is transferable if we sell the house (a major selling point). MRC tied in my new shingle roof to an existing flat roof (in a seamless fashion) that was coated with silicone. My Mom had a leak that I knew about in her house and thought that it was coming from the roof. So, we called MRC Roofing to come take a look. Jon the salesman did a pretty thorough inspection and was able to determine that it wasn't a roof leak at all. He climbed into the attic and found the problem. It turned out to be a gable vent that had been letting water blow in through the wall, since the wind was coming from the opposite direction as normal. My Mom had just had new siding installed and the siding contractor didn't replace the old vent or make his cuts around the vent very well. Jon asked her tenants if there were any other leaks that they were aware of. The tenant pointed out an exterior leak at the exterior eave, so Jon climbed up and inspected the lower flat roof above that leak. He was able to find a deficiency in the roof to wall transition and that a silicone coating would solve the issue and prolong the lifespan of the lower flat roof leak area. Then before he could get me the proposal for the coating, another Kona low storm hit Oahu and caused an interior leak where Jon found the second one. Luckily, the ball was already rolling and Jon didn't have to come back out to inspect the same leak area. This was now basically an emergency situation, but luckily all we had to do was sign the silicone coating proposal that Jon already had written up. In the course of my job, I was able to see first hand the workmanship and desire of Mike, the owner, to provide a quality roofing job for the customer. So when it was time for me to reroof my home, I already knew who I wanted to do the job. After purchasing our home, the leaking roof was the first thing on our list that needed to be fixed. During the site visit with Jon, our salesperson, it was brought to our attention that the multiple leaks in the roof were caused by the improper fastening (lag bolts missing the rafters below) of the original PV system panels on the roof. To ensure that thIs would not be an issue when the PV panels were reinstalled on the new roof, it was recommended that we go with thicker underlayment, which is normally used on low slope roofs and has excellent nail sealing properties, and the 50 year Malarkey asphalt shingles. The crew showed up on time, and left the jobsite very neat over the course of the reroofing job. They also cleared out some overgrowth in the gutter, and coordinated the removal and reinstallation of the PV system with my PV contractor. A big plus was that they had a carpenter on the crew, who could be utilized to repair any areas of the roof that were dry rotted or termite damaged. This ensured continual progress and minimal delays due to unforseen conditions with the roof. There was also a promotion running at that time for a free solar attic fan with the reroofing job. A few years ago, MRC installed a beautiful solar reflective Malarkey asphalt shingle on my grandparents' home that received wind damage. Jon at MRC was able to provide full information with free quote, pictures, notes and drawing of the wind damage for me to give to my insurance company. My insurance company paid for an entire new roof based off that information. The roof had some previous leaks that handy men weren't able to solve before I called MRC Roofing. MRC's policy is that if you choose them as your roofing contractor, they will get your roof leak free until they can schedule the reroofing job. Well, that's exactly what happened. We chose MRC and they came out immediately to fix the leaks before they could schedule the job. It turned out that I also had a leaking hot water solar panel also that couldn't be repaired because it was full of mineral scale buildup. The water panel got switched out with a newer panel free of charge by MRC. MRC Roofing is probably the best roofing company in Hawaii. In my personal and professional opinion I would and have continued to recommend them to family, friends and clients. I also recommend Malarky roofing tiles- we got a 50 year warranty and any future work (example PV) I plan to use MRC again. So I had an unlicensed roofer try to do some repairs on my roof about a year ago and it started leaking worse than before. When it comes to concrete tile, you really should hire a specialist, so I found out. I had some cracked Monier tiles because of the termite tenters from a few year ago. I knew I should have fixed it when it happened, but me being the procrastinator that I am I decided it would be more fun to watch baseball or MLBtv instead, until the light fixture in my ceiling filled full of rain water one day. Weeee what fun. It wasn't clean water either. It looked like someone flushed a toilet in the attic. I still knew the guy who originally tiled my roof, Victor. He used to own V's Roofing and I found out that now he works at MRC Roofing. He's a tile master and he came over and diagnosed the problem immediately. The sun and elements had deteriorated my exposed tar paper. The solution required more than just replacing some broken tiles. Victor had to perform some invasive surgery on my roof and install some new underlayment. That did the trick! Our roof was well overdue for replacement: the shingles were brittle, breaking off and blowing away in the wind. I reached out to five different roofing companies, two of which didn't bother to return my call. I selected MRC Roofing because I was pleased with the responsiveness and clear communication from Jon and the recommended shingle (Malarkey Highlander) appeared to be a quality product. The two other companies did not offer a comparable option. The roof removal and install crew worked quick and diligently on task. The crew seemed to get along and worked well with each other, making their grueling work seem fun. Any questions I had while the crew was there were addressed right away. At the end of both days, they made several rounds to cleanup the area, including removing roofing debris that managed to travel to neighboring yards from the wind. While walking around the house I noticed that there could have been some wind damage to my asphalt shingle roof that MRC Roofing installed a few years ago. Seven years ago, MRC guided us through a time when our copper shingle roof needed to be replaced due to wind damage. Our insurance company was not thrilled at the prospect of replacing our copper roof. They sent out adjusters and engineers to verify that roof was in fact wind damaged. Sure enough, the wind damage was undeniable, and the longer they investigated our roof the more interior water damage we received. Eventually Our carrier settled our claim for the amount needed to replace the roof with new copper shingles. We gave MRC the go ahead to commence the reroofing process, and because we were planning to install photovoltaic panels on our flat roof, we had MRC coat our flat roof with commercial grade silicone in order to last the life span of the new PV system. Our custom roof has some "interesting" nooks, crannies, skylights and chimney transitions that needed some extra attention even after the roofing was complete. MRC returned to our roof free of charge to ensure our water tightness. I buy houses at every duty station I've been assigned at in the Army over the last 20 years. My first house I bought on Oahu in 2001 needed a new roof and I used MRC Roofing for the job. I've bought three more houses on Oahu since then and used MRC to re-roof each one. MRC Roofing to the rescue. My flat roof sustained wind damage from the heavy winds recently. I spoke with a few roofers that didn't know their way around an insurance claim or know how to communicate or advocate for me, the homeowner in regards to the insurance adjusters who tried to minimize my claim as a repairable option for my roof that was not repairable, per the manufacturer's technical factory representative that had to write a letter to my claim office that my type of roof was not repairable on CertainTeed company letter head. Luckily, Jon at MRC knew how to push for a total reroof in order to get me made whole again with a total reroof that came with a 50-year material warranty and 7-year workmanship warranty, where as a repair scope would have left me without a warranty on my roof at all. Luckily MRC has journeyman roofers on their crew that know how to handle lumber repair, which my roof needed a lot of (unforeseeable). My insurance company drug their feet as long as they could. They even went out and got a fourth roofer's opinion in order to reject my claim. MRC then coated my new roof with a thick layer of commercial grade silicone and has a high reflectivity rating. I sit on the board of directors of my high-rise condominium in Waikiki. Ten years ago we re-roofed our building with a single-ply system even though my old Army buddy. Jon at MRC roofing, told me not to do that because single ply roofs don't hold up to harsh tropical climate in Hawaii. He was right, but the rest of the board was swayed by the high-pressure single-ply salesman. Now here we are second roof ten years later. We listened to Jon this time. We went with a 3-ply modified bitumen cap sheet system. He says this particular roof system will most likely outlive me. I believed him ten years ago and I believe him now, especially after our previous terrible roofing experience. We are now in litigation in litigation with the single-ply company due to flooding in the penthouses. Jon said we may need to coat this new 3-ply roof with silicone in about 30 years, which is fine by me as long as we don't have to dismantle our chiller units and do another tear off. Owning investment properties can be a nightmare, especially when they are spread-out all-over Oahu.  Then when five of them need to be reroofed at the same time, who ya gonna call?  MRC Roofing, that's who.  Their guy came out and looked at all five in one day!  He had them all drawn out using satellite imaging before he even showed up.  Good trick.  He just needed to go on the roofs to verify things.  He let all my tenants know he was there and what he was doing.  He even found interior water staining that my renters failed to tell me about.  He showed me pictures in an online drop box photo album thing, which was all organized by addresses.  Sheesh, this was not this guy's first rodeo.  He even showed me wind damage on one roof that he said my insurance company would probably settle on me with.  He was right.  They did settle on that one.  FREE ROOF!  Cha-ching.  They weren't the cheapest roofing quote I received, but the one free roof out of five made them the cheapest choice in the long run.  Pluss MRC is known for quality.  They did my dad's roof about 30 years ago and it's still going strong.  So it's basically a win-win. read more

MRC Roofing sure is RAD and helped me out. I live in South Dakota but I have a rental property on North Shore thats roof started leaking. They scheduled to go look at it the same day I called them! Wow! Jon, their salesman, took a bunch of high definition pictures and notes and sent me a free roof report and proposal to re-roof. Of course I was hoping that it would just be a small repair, but I guess my neglect of the roof over the years, and falling coconuts had done real damage. I woke up to find shingles in my yard.  I thought they were my neighbor's shingles from his roof but it turns out they were my shingles.  I called MRC Roofing to come take a look at the situation because they are the ones who roofed my father's house a few years ago and they did an excellent job.  So it turns out that I had enough damage to warrant initiating an insurance claim.  My insurance agreed that my roof qualified for a settlement.  I've never made a claim before and didn't know it was that easy.  I received a line item list of roofing materials that the insurance company was willing to pay for but MRC said the insurance company forgot some stuff on the line item list, and when I brought it to their attention they increased the settlement amount, which meant even less out my pocket.  I was able to get an upgraded solar reflective shingle and a solar attic fan.  Now my attic isn't 130 degrees anymore and my air conditioner doesn't run as much.  My original shingles were black with algae.  Now It's light colored and looks excellent just like my dad's house.  Well done, MRC.  Thank you. read more

It's all about the granules. Do you want to know about roofing? Then learn about granules! I had no idea that the granules on an asphalt shingle are what protect the entire thing from the sun and elements... but wait, there's more! Some granules fight algae and some granules reflect ultraviolet radiation from our sun. What you don't want is granule loss. When you lose granules, you lose life span of the shingle. If i learned one thing about this re-roofing project, it's definitely granules! I used to think that a roofing shingle was just a piece of floppy stuff. I found out that there is cutting edged research going into the development of making even better shingles. The shingles of the future are going to be awesome, and do you know why? Granules! Last year MRC Roofing did an Outstanding roofing job on my entire home. Communication and service was excellent with owner Mike Chu. He walked through the entire process with endless patience (my wife and I couldn't make up our minds on color and style). Wayne the project superintendent was on top of the job the entire time. Cleanup was everyday and my yard was cleaner then when they started! They even brought their own portable bathroom! My referral came from my two neighbors who are equally as impressed as I am! Our family cabin on North Shore was in desperate need of new shingles after years of being neglected by my Aunt who was the previous owner before the property was willed to me. TERMITES uuuugh!
