Scheduled a drop off from the new Mr.Taco delivery truck and we were not disappointed! The ceviche was fresh, kids LOVED the agua de limon and the micheladas get a 5 out of 5! I had the bionicos (fresh tropical fruit with granola and crema. Wonderfully refreshing and if that wasn't enough I added an egg and chorizo burrito. I have it with beans and potatoes inside and take advantage of the salsa bar for the spicy roasted chili sauce and the carrots and jalapenos. On top of that, all of our tacos came in bowls for that had dishwasher underneath them. It leaked through the wax paper and drenched the tortillas. One bite and you knew that it was wet and soggy. I had to have them replace all of our tacos. She tried to argue that it was the oil, but oil does not leave a little water-based puddle in the bowl... and oil does not taste like dishwater. The size of the fish and shrimp are a lot smaller here and they definitely skimp on the toppings. The fish at the other location covered the entire tortilla, but the fish here was a little anchovy. And of all things to ruin, how could you ruin the flavor. How could everything taste bland? Had to drench each taco in salsa for an ounce of flavor. I was very disappointed with my experience here considering how much I love Mr. Taco on Van Buren. TRUST ME: it's worth the drive to the other location. Mr. Taco, damn it! The Mr. Fries w/ carne asada omgggg! I LOVE carne asada fries, I get them all the time at all the different types of places that sell them. It's so hard to mess up, it's delicious fries, covered in all the best stuff! They sell it everywhere Like the little tiny taco shops, Mexican restaurants, even Rubio's has it now...I think...but now that I had it a Mr. Tacos I'm gonna be ruined for other places!! After two visits I think I have some things to say about this institution located in Riverside's industrial approach on Main Street. The place should be about 4-stars on account of the food but might be "too tough" for the polite or pretty bunch. Therefore, 3.5-stars but not rounded up due to the encounter with a thuggish bully on my first visit. This big gangster type pushed his way ahead of me in line then extorted the establishment for free food, and I could tell from the expressions of the cooks in the back he wasn't liked. They complied but got him back serving it for there rather than to go. Just my luck I ended up sitting next to him and his daughters until they got to go boxes. The inside is extremely cramped and the lines get long. The outside patio is covered but evidently my thin blood cannot handle the winter temperature even there. I do like the Aguas Frescas, the array of fresh fruit available, and the fantastic salsa bar with at least five types plus marinated vegetables, cucumber slices, limes and radishes. Chips are complimentary and heated. My first visit included a taco platter but I was disappointed in the up charge for carnitas, especially when they proved to be overly dry and flavorless. The carne asada, however, was the clear winner. Beans and rice and guacamole were decent, but I generally don't eat lots of beans. Today I decided to give them another go and was delighted to see the narrow parking lot almost empty (didn't last long though). I ordered immediately, and I can say that staff friendliness helps pull the score up. The quesadilla platter sounded great and was, albeit a bit oily. The carne asada again stood out and the hotter salsas, especially the salsa verde, were excellent. Things I like: the music is always popping and in the evening it has a very dance bar feel to it. The flavors in most of their food is good. Things I don't like: the people at the counter aren't very pleasant sometimes, it feels like you're bothering them if you come in and there's no line. We are new residents to Riverside and decided to give Mr. Taco a try on Thursday evening as I was craving a Miche. We are originally from LA so i've had my fair share of miche's and margs... Food: We ordered a borracho platter as we wanted to try a bit if everything. I was a bit disappointed because in the menu it stated Birria tacos but our platter did not have birria tacos. The server didn't mention them being out or anything. The tacos were pretty good. They also gave us chicken flautas and chicken taquitos (i'm assuming chicken taquitos in lieu of birria tacos). Food was alright. Price was pretty steep at $21 but again inflation. Drinks: Michelada was $15 and was not worth the hype. Bartender literally just poured clamato in a cup and gave me a 24 oz can of corona. Not to mention i didn't even get the tamarindo stick that was stated in menu. I'm use to other places making the michelada, adding lime and salt, etc... Margs: Priced about $14 ish. I got two cucumber margarita. Bartender went really light on the liquor. i asked for it spicy and it was not even mildly spicy. for the second marg i told my server extra spicy...it wasn't spicy :/ The margs were really pretty tho and the rim was yummy. Price: Pretty pricey for the quality of drinks and food. My spouse got bud light tall cans and they were priced at about $11 a pop. Vibe: the vibe was really great and loved the lights. Service: Server was attentive till about the time we got our food. then she would check on us very rarely. for a second i thought she left since another server was checking on us.. once we asked for the check out first server came back to collect payment. This really is the worst take out experience of my lifetime! We arrived at 8:45 pm, seeing they closed at 9:30pm. This was my first time here. The cashier served the person in front of us then, said to me, we are closed now! There was a dining room full of busy tables, food still coming out. At 8:45 pm! So. You know authentic Mexican food do ya? Well, I am giving you my gringa challenge (for whatever that means) to try this place. But beware. Make sure you ask about the degree of salsa hotness or you may be in for a surprise. They are not labeled. Gorgeous trays of beautiful, fresh fruits and freshly squeezed/juiced juices. Mmmm. Our meal: chile rellenos and (fried) fish tacos. The rellenos, plump and wonderful, were filled with a good Mexican cheese, topped with a delicious homemade tomato sauce. The crema sauce on the fish and cabbage was pink, a hint of chipotle. Both meals came with beans and rice, both quite tasty, and a heap of shredded lettuce and tomato. And, as I already warned you, the refried beans, and the chips, yep, were fried in lard. Then, I saw a burrito served to another customer. Holy carnitas! That sucker was huge. ***Note to self: Wendy...This you gotta try*** So, this meal was so authentic tasting, I started to worry about eating the lettuce. But just for a moment. You won't find a friendlier spot. And you will have a hearty, tasty meal, even if you are inclined to find better places to take your food, sit and eat. Riverside does have some decent parks nearby, and even the pretty campus of UCR might offer a grassy knoll and mature trees for a mid-day picnic. My first visit with my gal resulted in us waiting in their small little waiting room for 1/2 hour for 6 asada tacos. All the while others were ordering and receiving their food in a timely fashion. Yes they were crowded and it was noon, so I thought nothing of it. The second visit today at 11:30AM, with only one customer in the waiting room and 2 people in the dining room, it resulted in the same long 1/2 hour wait. This time I could see that everyone who entered after me got their food, but my simple multi taco dish still was not made. All the while each of the young gals saw me waiting and one even gave me a sticker. After 35 minutes and asking where my food was, I noticed the cooks (after an additional 5 minutes) still were not making my tacos so I demanded my money back and left Mr. Taco. The tortilla was pretty hard , and the tacos had little to no meat, I had ordered the carnitas and it barely had any , had more onions and cilantro then meat . I had to tell them . The food and meat weren't fresh or super flavorful as it's supposed to be. Rather, one of my tacos, Carne Asada, had a dish-wash flavor to it & I had to have it remade. My friend had the same situation with her food.
