I really wasn't impressed with Mr. Sushi. I had really high hopes given it was a downtown location (Weak competitors rarely survive very long). I actually went in at lunch time and he place was packed. The guys I went in with frequented the place often and were noticed immediately by the folks making the sushi, so they sent out a free roll for the table, which was a nice touch. That said, our waitress was less than good. She wasn't very pleasant, it took forever to get our drinks, and once we got them, getting a refill was challenging to say the least. She was one of the types of waitresses that you run into that you believe she believes can make it through a shift in just looks alone (I.e. I'll just cute my way through the shift). That doesn't work with me. In addition, I ordered a roll that had some tempura fried goodness inside, except instead of being good, it tasted funny because I believe the oil they fried it in must have been stale / used far too many times. Positives: Good, fresh tasting fish, nice atmosphere (though a little too dressed up, imo) super friendly staff, takeout anytime-even sunday night, open till 3am on weekends, menu that makes me want to go back. Besides sushi, they have a variety of asian dishes like yakisoba, dolsotbimbab and pad thai. So a cornicopia of pan-asian flavors to please all people with a taste for that specific rim. Although it's called Mr. Sushi, I decided to give their Korean food a try...and it didn't live up to my standard. However, I am willing to give this place a try next time by ordering their sushi instead. Overall, the experience was good because they have very good service. Starting with my phone call all the way to getting the food out of door was a pleasant experience. They're very friendly and helpful. While waiting for the food, the waitor constantly updated me on my food status. Also, while waiting for my food, I checked out the decor of the restaurant. It gives a modern and pleasant feel overall and I felt at ease while waiting for the food because it was also quiet. Don't get me wrong, it's not like hush hush quiet, but more like peaceful. Back to the food review...I will not order anymore asian meals from this place other than trying the sushi. The Bul Ko Gi (as they spelled it) was not very tender and meat was sliced really thick, which made it hard to chew. Any flavorful bulgogi that I've had in the past are usually thinly sliced meat. Usually, when I go to this restaurant, I can't pass up the sushi, but I have even tried some other items on the dinner menu, and they don't disappoint! Mr. Sushi is a great looking sit down restaurant for such a cheap name. I went here after work for a birthday party and we were the only people there on a Sunday night. Our service was wonderful and our server didn't blink at our party of 17, no reservation. He was totally cool and joked around with us. He even did separate checks, no fuss. The place is a large room, really nicely decorated and cozy (think warm colors and no glaring lights, not slouchy coffeehouse vibe). I would definitely take a date here. The sushi is pretty tasty and if you spend more than $15 you get soup and a small salad. I'm a go with the flow kind of sushi eater so I just put checks by several rolls not knowing exactly what they'd be like. All four good choices. Mr. Sushi is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Cincinnati. I love the location downtown! The sushi menu is really impressive with some very interesting and delicious rolls on their menu. The Wild Summer roll is a particular favorite of mine; I cannot dine here without ordering it. The sashimi and nigiri is always extremely fresh and the portion sizes are excellent. The traditional orange sauce often referred to as "spicy sauce" is actually spicy and I find that is not always the case at every sushi restaurant. I often get a side of it because I love it so much. I really haven't found anything on the menu that I did not enjoy. From the miso soup and ginger salad that comes with a sushi order to the delicious vegetable tempura. I swoon over Mr. Sushi! I've been here for lunch and dinner more times than I can even begin to count. If anyone ever requests a Mr. Sushi visit, this girl will not complain! My husband has had a few entrees and said they were amazing. The lunch bento boxes are very tasty and there are several combinations to choose from. The drink menu is really great thanks to their awesome cocktails as well as a very good sake selection. If they don't have what you're looking for on the menu, they take requests. If you become a regular, the sushi chefs will begin to develop a relationship with you and may even be willing allow you to sample some of their own unique sushi concoctions. Came in for lunch last month and it was OK. Got a nice sized portion of my order which was a salmon based roll. We split edamame and got drinks. It's all self serve and it was clean and run by hippie kids, no Asians. So whatever, if you are looking for Asian food or real sushi, Mr. What's His Name is probably not even close. I love this place. They have some delicious rolls, the quality is pretty consistent n matter who the sushi chef is at the time and the best part is 1/2 price sushi after 5pm all week!!!! They have had some under-staffing issues a few of the times we have been there, but they warn you ahead of time so that if you are in a rush you can go elsewhere before you commit. Our current favorites are the Volcano roll, the Airforce roll and the Dragon roll. They are the spine of any meal we have here and are usually complemented by some delicious Veggie Tempura ( all kinds of veggies, like sweet potato, pepper, onion and zucchini). Their gyoza are also quite good (the steamed dumplings are also nice, but you can't beat fried stuff ;) ) Sad part is that they only carry Pepsi and I am decidedly a Coke girl. read more

I have been curious about going to Mr. Sushi's for a while and decided to try it. All in all, I was impressed with how modern the restaurant is on the inside, and busy. Normally, at a sushi restaurant, a person would order sushi. However, I'm practically near people every day, so fish-breath won't work. I ordered a bento box, and had a bit of sticker shock. Pros: The Chicken Katsu I ordered was really good, and along with the veggies plus the extra items (small chicken wingette and sticky rice). The food came out piping hot and was very good. Cons: Although the food was hot, there was a long wait for it, and no real place to wait. Also, if you're looking for a reasonably priced lunch, this is not the place, unless you order a roll. As I mentioned before, the Chicken Katsu was really good. The clear noodles they included, were not as good. Also, the person taking my order acted like I was an "inconvenience". When you have customers, it is important to make them feel as though they are welcome to come to your establishment. Otherwise, (like myself in this case), you'll begin going elsewhere. All in all, it's not a bad restaurant and the food is okay. But due to the prices and not-so-friendly staff, I think I'll keep my money away from there. read more

We eat here probably once a week since the foods good and they're in our building lobby so that's convenient. Everything is always fresh I've never had any sushi with off flavors and staff is helpful and nice. I usually get the chirashi lunch, its sashimi fish on sushi rice bed. Tons of food and great combinations depending on what's good that day. It's not super expensive, but nor cheap either but good sushi never is. I went all out for carry out at my first Mr. Sushi experience. While walk up, carry out didn't seem like their thing they were so nice and accommodating. I sat at the bar and sipped water while they prepped my order. California Roll, Red Snapper and the Mango Roll were my selections and I had a salad to with their house dressing. Since my experience was a week ago, I don't want to attempt to recall the food too vividly. The size of the mango roll stuck with me, quite a portion. The sushi was solid and the prices were reasonable enough. I will say you pay for the environment to some extent so carry out may make a bit more sense elsewhere. read more

Super bland and generic tasting. The lo mein tasted like nothing. The japanese noodle dish wasn't bad. But it wasn't good. The sushi rice in our Godzilla roll was mushy and it reminded me of sushi I've had from Costco...only not as good. As far as saying the rolls are half priced...that's damn trickery. They just double the normal price in the menu so you feel like getting a deal when they cut the price in half at the end. Nobody pays $20 for a cheap roll of sushi any where. Severely disappointing. We stopped in Cinci on our way back to Kentucky and we were craving some great sushi. We were not let down. Mr. Sushi is an open and bright restaurant. We sat on the patio. Sarah, our server, was superb. She was friendly, informative, and fast. The sushi was super tasty and fresh. This venue also had a very extensive beer list for being a Japanese restaurant! I had the Tempura Roll and the Alaskan Roll. The Tempura Roll was salmon, cream cheese, and asparagus. It was deep fried and topped with eel sauce. After waiting 40 minutes, my husband asked our waiter why it was taking so long and he casually said he never ordered our rolls. We ended up leaving with no time to eat before the show. Mr. Sushi seems to be one of the few places for less "industrialized" (I'm looking at you, Fusian) places for Asian cuisine. I stopped by for takeout, ordered two rolls (Futo Maki and Salmon), spectated the chefs making my sushi for a brief 5-10 minutes, and walked back with some decent sushi. The order came with a side of miso soup, some ho-hum iceberg lettuce salad, and...nine packets of soy sauce!!! (to bathe the sushi in???). In my opinion, the best part about the place is the plum/peach/lychee-flavored candy featured at the counter. I enjoyed one while waiting for my meal and could not resist taking a few for the road. As someone with an advanced degree in candy informatics and an undergrad background in sweet tooth studies, I definitely recommend it. TL;DR: Fast service, decent sushi, fruity candy. read more

Like many visitors I was thrown off by the restaurant's playful name, but upon arrival I was immediately impressed by the sophisticated and modern decorations and atmosphere. The wait staff was prompt and cheerful. The menu is expansive but not overwhelming. Their sushi selection hits all the must haves with a few unique additions. We tried a house specialty appetizer with thin rice noodles, spiced tuna, cucumber, jalapenos and a few other ingredients. It was amazing and a new must for future visits. This place can't seem to decide what it wants to be. It's a little too upscale-looking inside to be advertising half price sushi 7 days a week, karaoke, and cheap shots. It would be more palatable if this place was a bit more like Drunken Bento in Clifton (i.e. More casual.) No complaints about service. It was empty at dinner time on a pretty busy Saturday night. That being said, the sushi *is* half price after 4pm - I can't think of a better deal in the downtown area. read more

I just ate lunch here with my wife, and it was our first time here. Even with the busy lunch rush we were able to be seated at the bar right away, and our server was very prompt, friendly and attentive. Our food, I had Tempura Udon and my wife had Yokisoba, came out right when we were ready, everything was very delicious, and the portions were quite large so we also have leftovers. Sushi here is decent - I mostly go for the half price for dinner sometimes eating with others or by myself. I understand that being a waiter is not the easiest job but the wait staff here seems to never be around or available when you want them. My last experience was me waiting for almost 15 min after my table was cleared off just to get the check to pay - I wasn't hanging around to socialize I was waiting for the waiter to show up. I think it was clear that he was not around when the only other table he was serving walked their checks with payment over to him as soon as he came up to our table (instead of waiting for him to come over) because they were tired of waiting for him to come back to take their payment. read more

The location is excellent, the environment is great, the manager who is usually perched by the entrance was welcoming and friendly. Was seated almost immediately but spent ten minutes waiting to be acknowledged. I was ready to walk out when I asked the server who had walked by me a dozen times already if I was going to be taken care of. He insisted he would rush things, but nothing was rushed and everything still seemed slow for only having a handful of guests in the restaurant at the time. I've only been here once and had a mediocre dinner and even worse service. The sushi looked alright, but as far as taste goes I prefer the artistry of Maki in Clifton Heights. The seafood pancake was greasy and overcooked. I ordered sake and it came to the table without being opened. The server was inattentive. A positive however was the decor - nicely done there. As far as sushi palates go, I may not have an expert one, but I know what I like. Mr. Sushi fits the bill. I've had a number of their rolls and have not been disappointed in presentation or taste. I always start snacking on the edamame. The perfect complement to their rolls is the miso soup and their house salad which has amazing dressing on it, that I've never been able to recreate but always enjoy. They have My favorite item is the Spicy Roll combo which consists of spicy California roll, spicy shrimp roll and spicy tuna roll. I'm also a fan of their pad thai which, although not spicy, has good flavor and abundance of whatever you choose- chicken, shrimp or beef. If you go for lunch, try one of the bento boxes. It's a lot of food for a reasonable price and has a little bit of everything. Don't plan on doing a lot of work afterward, though, because you're more likely to just want to take a nap after such filling a meal. The service was good during lunch; didn't have to hunt someone down for the check. During dinner, the service was good, as well, even with our more specific orderers. The atmosphere was very contemporary and the space large enough so when they have a good crowd, you don't feel packed in. With their extensive selection of rolls at a reasonable price, Mr. Sushi is a must. read more
