A few weeks in and I have to add these very important things: + Fresh juice is amazing and healthy and you can put whatever you want in it. This is extra good because I never have time to chill at Outpost any more :( + Their frozen veggie meals (don't judge) are literally $2 cheaper than at Met. Mr M's charges $4.50 and they're $6.50+ at the big store. I am an underpaid teacher with no time/energy to cook at night, and I like to pretend to eat healthy sometimes. The Mr.Fruit chain is the real deal. I just moved to the area from Bushwick where I was walking distance from Kiwi and was so relieved I'd be walking distance from Melon!!!! The produce prices at this chain are the lowest I've found in the city and they often have seasonal exciting fruits and veggies to try at a bargain. This place is a little further than either the major supermarket in my area or my go to bodega, so I never go here. until it was 4am the saturday night before Hurricane Sandy hit and I really needed to do some food shopping before it was too late, and wanted to avoid lines. This place being a 24/7 food store immediately gets it the first 3 stars. What gets it star 4 is the fact that it is clean, and I can trust the quality of the food there. Not much of a produce person, but I can recognize a good produce place when I see one. Its got more going than a bodega, less than an actual supermarket, but definitely a go-to place for certain things. read more

Fresh fruit and produce, and friendly service. Unbeatable prices. I usually take my own shopping bag and they help fill it, making sure items with potential to crush go on top. I'll shop at the Met Foods or Associated (or even the new Trade Wise across the street) from time to time, but still always come back here for their fruits and veggies. read more

My idiot boyfriend misplaced a jar of organic cocktail sauce on our nation's birthday. I should have checked his bag to make sure the moron didn't leave it on the counter, so I guess I only have myself to blame, but regardless, I was in a pinch. I wandered the convoluted aisles of Key Food for so long I developed a cat in my chest. I was worried my shrimp cocktail was going to be served nude until I decided in a moment of desperation to try Mr Melon. They had the best cocktail sauce I've ever had. read more

I love love love Mr. Melon. The produce sales out front are reliably amazing. A few weeks ago (aka middle of December) I picked up 10 containers of berries - 2lbs of strawberries, a number of the smaller containers of blueberries / blackberries / raspberries - and each of them was only a dollar! And you'd think the quality would be terrible since it's December (I usually avoid buying stuff out of season) but they were all really good! I often take pictures of my hauls to send to my mom in Ohio. She's always astounded by the prices and tells me to buy up a bunch before it disappears because she doesn't know that this happens every other day practically. Other reasons why Mr. Melon is awesome: 1. open 24 hours! which is great because 2. you can buy ice cream at 4 in the morning if you want. Also, their pints of Haagen Daz are cheaper than the ones down the street at Key Food usually are (only 4.99). And the freezer is very very cold so you never have any weird refrozen texture issues (pet peeve of mine). It's also rock hard when you get it home, which I'm a fan of in spite of spoon bending issues. (if you don't like rock hard ice cream just leave it outside the freezer for a few minutes). 3. Good fresh squeezed juice. I feel like fresh juice is always a little pricey, but it's good and what they squeeze never fits in the tiny cups so they tell you to drink half of the cup and then they fill it the rest of the way which is nice. My favorites are the grapefruit/orange/pineapple/lemon combo on the board and kale/apple/lime/pineapple. 4. The employees are nice, especially one of the younger guys who works there. Once he was manning the juicer and accidentally gave my little sister the bigger size when she ordered the smaller one, and he was just super sweet. read more

So glad to have found this place... Great produce at fantastic prices ($1 lb strawberries, $.50 huge perfect eggplant, $1 for 4 heads of garlic, $.25 per squash). Everybody who works here was also super friendly. Still like Mr. Melon but the introductory prices have gone up a bit. You can still find cheap fruit to "pull you in" but I tend to check out their stuff first, then go to Met Food on the next block to compare prices. Between the two of them you can find decent deals. Mr. Melon tends to be a better deal for fruit (mainly the stuff outside) but Met Food has bags of onions and potatoes. Mr. Melon's stuff if mostly loose. The best deal they have though is the fresh pressed juice. Add some ginger for a nice peppery kick and added health benefits. They also have sushi. Double points for them because they're open late - maybe even 24 hours. read more

I never do Yelp reviews but this place is a godsend. Cheapest produce in the city, especially berries. Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries--for a dollar a thing! You would pay $5 or $6 to get a carton of berries at most stores. I go here at 3 in the morning on my way home from a party and stock up for tomorrow's breakfast. This place is almost (key word!) a functional grocery store. They've got a good amount of stuff and a lot of it's cheap - 50 cent scallions, $1 herbs, $3 small and $4 large fresh juices from the juice bar. (Get a beet carrot apple and celery.) They carry a lot of fun organic and international stuff that's expensive but fairly priced (think fancy jellies, Spanish tuna), and they have locally made pasta sauces and breads. Their Latino food selection isn't very good, but their asian food selection is (in addition to the usual pastes and noodles you can get at most places, they also have fresh ingredients - spring roll wrappers, Bok choy, daikon, sprouts). I was disappointed that the cheapest cans of black beans and chickpeas are $2.50 organic ones... You'll probably be happiest if you come here to see what deals you can score, but not with an exact shopping list in mind. read more

I love Mr. Melon, every morning I come here for my #1 i swap pineapple for celery - so mostly greens, and the juicer puts 1 piece of ginger for me. A large makes me full and the price is unbeatable!!! If I am running late for work and don't make the morning, I grab it for lunch. Oh, I love this place. My brother totes us around here whenever we come up to Brooklyn to visit. I don't normally buy any groceries, but their veggie juice is awesome! You get to choose some fruits/veggies, not limited to kale, pineapple, beets, ginger, and they juice it in front of you! If they accidentally make too much to fit into your cup, you get to quickly drink some before they fill your cup back up again. Very fun to watch, delicious (and kind of healthful) to drink. read more

Prices are truly great and the afternoon staff is friendly, but in the early a.m., they have a grouch at the cash register. I went there Monday, about 6:45 in the morning, put strawberry's on counter and asked man behind register did they have any blueberries. His attention was on his phone and he said, very nasty , "No!!!!" Then he points to the side aisle and says, again very nasty, 'over there!' I looked came back to counter to pay for strawberries. 2 customers were in line, he serves them, says thank you to both. He serves me, gives me my change, never says thank you. I asked him why would he say thank you to the 2 customers ahead of me and not to me (I spent the most money). He just smiled a wide grin and says ' oh oh thank you, thank you'. I don't think I'm any more special then anyone else but everyone deserves respect. If I really didn't need the strawberries ( they were for a breakfast at work) I would have just asked for my money back and went else where. That person really needed an attitude adjustment as well as proper customer etiquette. 4 stars for the prices. read more

Stumbled across Mr Melon while out and about exploring my new city. It's the cutest place, bright and clean and with low-priced produce. I went in to pick up a roll of toilet paper, and came out with a bag full of groceries ... for under $20! I only wish I lived closer (sigh). read more
