I recently got an oil change at a gas station. The gas station people told me I needed both cv boots and axels replaced for $400ish and timing belt replacement for $675. I told my fiance, who then subsequently looked up CarTalk (his saturday favorite radio station) and found Mr. Mazda through CarTalk. I then dropped off my vehicle with Mr Mazda after a few pleasant and responsive phone chats with Tracy and Mike. I just picked up my car last night with a much lighter maintenance repair compared to what the gas station recommended and was told that there's no rush to change out the CV boots until probably winter time. Great experience. Previously, I was told by a place in Mountain View that, based on the two check engine codes on my '99 Mazda Protege 1.8L, I almost definitely needed a new catalytic converter. They quoted me $1400 for installing a new OEM manifold cat and new oxygen sensors. Then I brought my car to Mr. Mazda. Mike's initial guess as to why my Protege was having performance problems, shutting off at red lights, and showing the check engine codes turned out to be correct. He diagnosed and fixed my car for $170. It's running great. I will definitely be returning. Apparently, he services non-Mazdas as well. read more

I don't recall the first time I came here, but I have been coming back ever since. A friend recommended the place and even though i didn't have a Mazda, I brought my car here and had it fixed, I finally ended up buying a 1990 Mazda Miata and have brought it here several times for service. Just last week, I was driving on Highway 17 when the car started responding funny. I called Mike at Mr. Mazda and told him what it was doing. He told me to get off the Highway immediately and pull over. I got off of Highway 17 and turned off everything I could as he told me to do including my lights, radio, and pulled my charger out. My car stopped at a red light and would not restart. Turns out he diagnosed my problem over the phone when he said it sounded like my alternator was dying. He was right. I had my car towed to his place and he sent a guy out immediately to get a new alternator. He started pulling the old one out. As soon as the guy returned, he was ready to install the new one. He got it in and took it for a test drive. When he came back he wasn't happy. I turns out that more work needed to be done. He put the car up, tweaked something underneath and said that would stop the noise I had been hearing, added some screws to my brackets that hold my top down and said that would help with the interior noise. He changed out my spark plugs, adjusted my timing and maybe even did some other things. The cost of everything was the same as the cost of the original repair plus the spark plugs. I drove away and my car was just like new. No more high pitch sound as I was driving, no more sputtering on take off, no more struggling up hills with the A/C on. He turned it into the little tiger it was meant it be! Mike is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to Mazdas. He knows how to make them hum along better than I thought possible. He's all the things you want in a mechanic; knowledgable, honest, and proud of his work! Yes, I highly recommend him and his shop. read more

I had an old used miata about a year and a half ago. It had an annnoying rattling noise coming from it that I just couldn't fix so I took it to Mike at Mr. Mazda. I also had a full car inspection done at that time. To make this short and sweet, Mike fixed the rattle (loose frame brace bolt) told me what kind of shape the car was in (fair for it's age) and reccomended future services and parts that should be replaced in the next couple of years or so. To top it off he only charged me for an inspection (which was about half of what other places would have charged me). I'd come back here anytime for any service or repairs! read more

I was referred to Mr. Mazda after I purchased my new MX-5 ND by several Miata enthusiasts. I have had bad experiences at dealerships, aside from the Porsche dealership which I take my Porsche to. Other than for warranty work, I am very hesitant to have unmotivated, robotic, high volume dealership techs work on my cars. This was confirmed when I brought my car to "Oak Tree Mazda" for a clutch warranty issue at 1600 miles. Long story short, the tech did an apparent quick and rushed McDonald's Drive-Thru style diagnosis job, did NOT fix the problem, worked on another thing which was not even a problem, torqued my wheel lugs to 135 lbs which is not good for the brake rotors! (THIS, I found out with a torque wrench after I went home later that day when I was installing some wheel locks I just purchased - I did not have a power gun and it took a good 15 minutes of substantial effort to loosen the bolts!). Anyway, I wasted a day going to the dealership for a problem that was not fixed and which I later ended up fixing myself, with a tech that tippy toed around my complaint and worked on an unrelated area with no problem at all (perhaps Dealer will make money because Mazda Corp will pay for it under warranty ?? Maybe??), and then having the tech put a nice finishing touch by power torquing the hell out of the wheel nuts before returning my clean new car to me with greasy hand prints all over the fenders and hood. Sorry for my digression. But It's because of dealership experiences and frustrations like mine that steer many people to independent and honest shops like Mr. Mazda. Dealerships are often overpriced, inconsistent in work quality and push/sell/scare you "for the sake of safety" services you do NOT need because they make commission and money off of you. So for my first/5K service, I went to Mr. Mazda where I dealt with Tim who was pleasant, professional and straight forward. Just my first routine service so I'm not expecting anything eventful. Chatted with him for a bit and he was very upfront and honest. He was also assuring me that when they do any servicing for Mazda cars, that all their work, parts used and protocol is consistent or exceeds factory recommendations. Therefore, work performed at Mr. Mazda will NOT affect or void your Mazda's New Car Warranty. They are also a Mazda Certified shop. Overall, I highly recommend this shop! read more

I went back to Mike at Mr. Mazda for a car inspection and once again got the best customer service, price and quality. Mike advised I needed a new seal for the engine and suggested other things that may arise in the future but repaired what was needed and no more. This shop is all 5 stars plus some. The only good thing about my "divorce" is I got full custody of Mr. Mazda. I previously had my Rowdie Audi and I must admit I was completely in love with all the research I did on my now 2009 MS3, but was scared because I didn't know any mechanics. But I sat down and got Hermes and wasn't happier, until it came time to figure out who was going to do my oil changes and future inspections. Fortunately my friend had a Mazda and recommended going to him. I can't say I haven't been happier. He is now mechanic of my mom's 2006 Hybrid Civic. Example, he replaced my front headlight bulbs for free (I had the bulbs) because I couldn't put in the drivers side one. Stupid Oak Tree was going to charge me $75 on top of the $30 price of bulbs. Took my 09 mazdaspeed 3 here today (first time here). The service was amazing and everyone down there knew mazda's even my car which is a bit more on the uncommon side. Had a nice convo about the car and they had the car all done in just a day and made it super easy for me to come pick it up. Check engine light was on, yet again, after numerous attempts to find the problem using a small scanner. Read all the great reviews and decided to give them a try. So glad I did. Such a nice guy and, like the reviews say, Tim knows all about Mazdas. Car needs a catalytic converter, so he quoted me a price and said he'd give me credit for today's diagnostic. Didn't make 250K, only 243K. Tires were wearing and the AC was intermittent. Mike kept me going for 17 years. I commend and highly recommend Mr. Mazda's service. Downside is the new car is a plug in hybrid, so I have to find another mechanic or go to the dealer. Some details, I never replaced the McPhersons struts. Mike said as long as they weren't leaking and the dampening was good I did not need to. I thought that my transmission was going, but Mike replaced the spark plugs which cured the herky jerky driving I was experiencing. There were a few other times I thought it was time to buy another car, but Mike fixed things and kept me going. Thanks Mike! read more

I've got to be honest. I don't take my cars in to get maintenance or anything else done. My mechanic of choice is almost always myself in my garage. Coming here meant I was bested by my car; giving up and throwing in the white flag. A low moment for me. The clutch went on my son's Mazda 3, had it towed in to their shop, they located a few other things that needed to be fixed, and had it done by the next day for a reasonable price (not dirt cheap as they are qualified mechanics and use good parts). NOTE: I might not be calling the parts by their proper names as I'm not too car-knowledgeable. I have a 2008 Mazdaspeed3 which I used to get serviced at another shop I but decided to give Mr. Mazda a try when I was experiencing an issue with the electric fan. Mike sourced a used fan and installed it then realized it was a problem with the controller and not the fan itself. When he called with an update he explained this to me and adjusted the estimate accordingly, not charging me for the new (used) fan or the labor to install. I appreciated that he was honest about the work he did. That goes a long way with me especially when you hear stories about shops ripping people off. When I went to pick up my car I talked to Mike a bit about the Mazdaspeed3's in general and also his business/customer service philosophy. He gave good info about both. I had a very positive experience with Mike and felt comfortable with him during that first visit. As a result, I had them to do my 90k service earlier this year. When I got my car back home, I noticed that my center display would not display the outside temperature. (This would not have been obvious to anyone unless they manually tried to get the outside temp to display.) The reason I mention this is not a negative but a positive. I called and talked to Tim and he had me check to make sure the external temperature sensor was connected as he didn't want me to have to drive it back if it was just a matter of me reconnecting it. Unfortunately that wasn't the problem so I ended up dropping it off for him to diagnose. He was able to figure out that a harness in the dash which they disconnected during the service was reconnected BUT one of the pins got misaligned so it turned out to be a simple fix but I think it's pretty good that he was able to trace it back to a single pin within a harness. Tim's great customer service skills and overall good attitude during our interactions was refreshing. A few weeks ago I started to experience a whirring noise when the steering wheel was turned and I slowly accelerated. I talked to Tim and his initial thought was that I might need an additive added to the transmission fluid. I dropped the car off last night with a note that my shifter gets notchy when it's cold (which I didn't mention during our call). What Tim did was to drain and refill the transmission to be sure it was Redline fluid in there (which he said works well) and added the limited slip additive. He didn't want to charge me as he said it could have been a different fluid the tech used during my service but the tech no longer worked there so he wasn't able to confirm. I did not expect him to do this as there wasn't a way to say that this was related to my 90k service but again appreciated his candor and level of customer service. In general, fair pricing, excellent customer service skills and a couple of really honest and knowledgeable guys will keep me as a return customer. Thank you, Mike and Tim! read more

Long story short - my rear differential sounded bad, a dealership advised to replace it. As the problem is not unusual for early CX5's and Mazda has a TS on the problem, I have hoped the dealership would contact Mazda and the replacement cost would be on them. Well, it didn't work that way. Then I was lucky to meet Tim @ Mr. Mazda. It's not just he and the team did a great job in timely manner, but Tim also gave a call to Mazda office and managed to reimburse the broken part! I strongly recommend Mr Mazda services. read more

I never thought I'd use the words "I trust my mechanic completely" in a review. I found Mike through Yelp and Google a couple of years ago after being fleeced by a local Mazda dealer. He's spectacular. Very nice, very straightforward, and honest to a fault. His work is excellent, and on one occasion when things didn't work out perfectly he took my car back, figured out the problem and made it right without charging me any more labor. The dealer always tried to talk me into doing more. Mike actually talks me into doing less. "I don't think you need to replace that right now unless you really want to..." And he's always right. I can't always get there during business hours so we've worked things out so I leave my car the night before and pick it up after hours. I don't know how long I'll be living in the area, or how long I'll have my Mazda3, but as long as I'm around I'm taking that car to him. It really is weird to say such nice things about a mechanic, which is why I'm taking the time to write them down. It's rare, but when it happens... what a great thing. read more

For the last year I've had a PT Cruiser, but prior to that I had a Mazda B2600i Truck for years. Mr. Mazda did every service on it for me and was always immaculate with the inside of it even though it was a truck. Later in my truck's life, I managed to crack the block. From what I found in yahoo, a semi-common occurrance, but I was beyond any warranty work. Mike was able to find me a reasonable deal on the rebuild and cut me a deal that was over 1K less than the dealership was willing to do. If I had another Mazda, Mike would be the only one I would let touch it. read more

Took my 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 to Mr. Mazda after reading the reviews. Glad I did! I've been dealing with issues with my speed for over a year now. Several other shops tried to solve the issue to no avail. Tim the shop manager explained in detail the issues with the car. He kept me informed on the status of the car. He also went out of his way to make arrangement picking up the car after hours. As for the speed 3 ... The problem was fix and other issues were addressed. The speed has about 275k miles and before they worked on it it felt every mile like it did. Now it runs great. I don't remember the last time it ran this great! No more engine surging, clunking noise, suspension noise, and harsh/rough shifiting! Excellent customer service and excellent crew! If you have a Mazda then this place is for you! read more

Ever since I bought my Protege, I've been taking it to Mike (Mr. Mazda) for all my service intervals. I do oil changes and tire rotations by myself; however, anything more advanced goes to Mike. This place is great! Mike really takes care of the customer and takes time to explain everything that happens. During a service, I explained a clutch and transmission annoyance I've been having during cold starts and he told me it was worth living with rather than shelling out $700 for new parts and labor. That's what I call an honest mechanic. Needless to say, he's the only one that will be working on my cars from now on. I think I'm going to have to get another Mazda next so I can keep coming back here. read more

He is honest, knowledgeable, and will get the job done. Now I do not know anything about cars, but he does a really good job in explaining the problem and how he will fix it. My Mazda 626 had a transmission problem. I yelped for a good mazda mechanic and found Mike from Mr. Mazda. One things that is evident from my experience with Mr Mazda is that they will never cheat you. Mike held my car for one day. He estimated inspection charges on the order of $85 when he took the car. My car had some serious transmission issues which could only be fixed at some other place. Many other mechanics would charge you a flat inspection fee whether or not they repair or your. Mike did not charge me anything. He advised me he can sense something wrong with the transmission, but that he would not be able to diagnose any further. He even filled up the transmission fluid on my car, but did not charge anything. I would advise this place for any and all of your car needs. Although I am not sure of their mechanic skills (as I dif not have a chance to get my car repaired from them), these people are really honest and trustworthy. read more
