I've been gonig to Mr. Mazda for several years to have required maintenance and performance mods done on my Miata and Protege 5. I like the fact Mike uses OEM replacement parts. This guy mike. He is amazing. He is very professional and knows what he is talking about. We took our van to a transmission shop because of some slipping and they told us that it would cost $3,000 to change the tranny. I stopped by master Mazda and mike told me that it was a little part broken and would cost me $40. I was like WHAT? $40???? He changed it and it ran like a champ. I couldn't believe he was so honest. I just had my transmission replaced on my 1991 Miata here, and could not be happier. When I first rolled up to see how much it would cost, Mike (the owner) jumped straight in the car with me and checked out the problem for himself. They even dealt with the junkyard to coordinate getting the part for me, and the quality of the work is awesome - the car is better than it has been for a long time, everything they touched, such as the clutch linkage is working better than before, not just the transmission. They were honest and open with me throughout and they did not nickel and dime me for each and every minute they spent diagnosing the problem and making adjustments/fluid fills etc after the swap, as some places (especially dealers) would. I recommend them to all Miata owners (and they are probably just as good with all Mazdas). read more

Several months ago, Mike, the owner, came recommended by the folks at A Foreign Affair for his expertise on Mazdas. He properly diagnosed and repaired an ignition issue on my 2000 Miata promptly. Based on the CEL code initially found, he explained that the ignition problem typically results in Catalytic Converter degradation as well which was After repairing the root cause and Unfortunately, this type of failure typically contributes to Catalytic Converter damage and triggers the CEL. It would still be drivable, but not pass Smog. He gave me a quote and said I had time to decide whether or not I wanted to repair or make other plans for the car. He outlined the pros and cons of using genuine parts for this particular repair, and said he would do what ever I prefer. Now, a few months later, I decided to keep the Miata and proceed with the repairs. He diagnosed it and confirmed it was as he initially suspected without charging me another diagnostics fee. Total cost was spot on what he estimated several months back, and on top of that he tightened some squeaky belts I asked about at no extra charge. Overall, I like how he is very knowledgable about Mazdas, explains what the situation is along with several options, and delivers exactly as he says. He is a pleasure to deal with, and worth the drive from Fremont to have a professional you can trust. read more

I've been bringing my 12 yr old Miata here for the last two years and I have nothing but praise for Mike and the crew. After years of going to local shops and Firestone, my vehicle had many items that weren't resolved. I received a call from Mike the owner today. He was disappointed about receiving such a low score and tried to assert that they're a busy shop that doesn't need to do shady things for business. (1) As to the issue of the test drive, he said they hadn't driven the car before and some people keep their car in a poor manner because they can't afford to fix it. My car had a disconnected air box hose and was jerking, shaking, and symptomatic of misfiring. "some people keep their cars like that" was their excuse? I was there getting preventative maintenance, replacing my battery terminal because the clamp wasn't connecting as tightly as I'd like. The owner who's that attentive is not likely to have a car in such a debilitating state. (2) He claimed that because the hose was loose and could be re-inserted by hand, it was instead likely loose to start with and just so happened to come out in the shop. Yeah, no. A hose that just came loose by itself will likely require loosening the clamp to reinsert. A hose that has had it's clamp loosened with a mini drill will just slide in. He denied that both ends were loose, but I was actually the one who discovered it, and watched his tech clamp both ends with their fancy mini-drills with attached flashlights. (It sticks out because I remember thinking, wow that's genius, I need to get one) (3) As for the loose junction box, he noted that his tech had never done such a job before, and it was an awkward angle. Mike's main point was that his shop is not the sort to engage in shady behavior. This may very likely be true. He also noted they gave me a deal on the job. My original review notes the fair pricing he gave. He also noted that they were quick to drop everything and look at my car, run their OBD scanner and that they would have likely discovered the airbox. That's true they did, and yes they likely would have. What concerns me most is it's obvious what likely happened: the tech loosened the hose thinking it might be in the way, and then forgot to clamp it back down. The hoses already being loose isn't very likely due to the fact that they were easily reinserted by hand, far more indicative of being loosened with a drill I was glad to receive a follow up call, and am adding a star, but they still haven't taken responsibility for what happened. read more

We ended up in this shop by accident while looking for a tow shop that had our car. Tim helped us find the right tow shop and even called them for us to find out if our car was actually there--which it was. He spent a good 15 mins of his business time helping us. I took my Miata for inspection. They charge $150 for inspection and didn't even check tire pressure. I paid $75 to fix rattling sound on latch to open top and they didn't fix AT ALL. it was exactly the same as before. I live 1hr30mn away from them and they don't open on weekends, there is no way I can go back just for this. I asked refund and they didn't accept it. One of the worst experience with auto place. I was towed to Mr. Mazda after my old mechanic went out of business. The tow truck driver said he was honest and excellent. My Miata needed a Crank fire sensor. Who ever heard of such a thing. Mike told me it would be a $650 part from the dealer. I told him that was not worth it to me for a $2000 car. Mike, the owner than told me to call a guy in San Leando named Rahim who parts out miatas. Mike said Rahim may have one and would be much cheaper even it was used. I called Rahim, got it for $75 and picked it up. Mr. Mazda then installed it and I got my car back the same day. To say that I am stunned is not fair. Mike is simply amazing, nice, honest and works with you. I take all my cars there including a Lexus. I would not let anyone else touch my cars. I was referred to Mike at Mr. Mazda by my friend Roy who used to use Mike for his RX7 repairs. I brought my RX8 to him to check out an odd noise in the engine. Turns out its nothing serious but I did have him do some other repairs that needed to be done. They were honest about the repairs that NEEDED to be done not what "should" be done. He gave me some helpful tips when I picked the car up about rotary engines and my 2005 in particular. I am very lucky to have met Mike and his sweet dog Max. Mike and his guys at Mr Mazda are the best. They were able to diagnose a couple of issues with a used Miata I bought that another respected shop in the Bay Area misdiagnosed. For example, the other shop just recommended replacing all the aftermarket shocks and springs (?!?!?!?) to remove a creaking noise. Mike discovered that the aftermarket rear sway bar had separated at one mount, and his suggested repair made much more sense. Labor rates are fair, for the quality of service and expertise. The mechanic at Rotarsport uses a front desk woman to screen his calls. Trying to get him on the phone is like trying to get ahold of the president. Mike is a great person to work with. I have a '91 Miata which was garaged for several years after a transmission problem. I called and talked with Mike, and he assured me they'd look it over. Mike is honest and much cheaper than the dealership, you can trust what he says and does. He saved me major $$ today, I called to ask what he charges for diagnosing a front air bag sensor issue. I asked him if it's usually the module, corrosion or ?? He gave me some advice on how to troubleshoot it myself, check the connection, clean connectors etc and voila I was able to take care of it myself. Mike's quote to trouble shoot this had I needed more help was about 40% less than the dealer, oh and had I not called Mike just taken it to the dealer I would have been charged a ton of money for an unplugged harness. It was a weird noise I've never heard, so I took the car in to the dealership (since it's a new car under warranty) to have them look over the car. Tim was very nice and informative. I went next morning. He was waiting for me and gave me a quote right after diagnose it. On top of the problem, he told me it needed new front brakes (that was due while ago), and new tires.
