My boyfriend and I were driving back from New Orleans, and we planned on grabbing some dinner around our halfway point, Jackson, MS. Boy were we surprised to find such a delicious and pretty authentic Chinese restaurant. I perused their yelp photos, and I knew we had to stop by and try it! The restaurant is actually connected to an Asian grocery store, so once you enter the store, it will be directly to your left. Nice set up & decor (stark difference from the store portion.) Booths and regular table seating. Plenty of space! Our hostess and waitress were both unbelievably nice! I find that traditionally Asian restaurants tend to have terrible service, but the food came out quick. They were attentive. Waitress boxed up our leftovers, and she totally didn't have to do that. Now on to the food! We were feeling a little ambitious, and we got 4 entrees: basil clams, crispy tofu w/ ground soybean, 1/2 a roasted duck, and shrimp lo mein. Basil clams were delicious! Love that sauce with the white rice they provided. Tofu was just the way I like it--crispy! The duck was a little greasy, but honestly that isn't uncommon with that dish. Shrimp lo mein was good as well! They coat their shrimp lightly with breading. All-in-all, very good, and we definitely didn't finish it all! We grabbed this to go on our long drive from Fayetteville Arkansas to Pensacola beach. It was so delicious!! We both got shrimp fried rice and we shared fried dumplings. The shrimp is so fresh and big and scrumptious! We are grabbing it again today on our drive back home. Will definitely get again anytime we are driving through Jackson!! read more

Food was very good! We got the Seafood Hot & Sour Soup, Mr. Chen's spicy chicken, pan fried dumplings, fried rice, & General Tso's Chicken. The sauce with the dumplings was absolutely delicious!! And the Mr. Chen's chicken was actually spicy & very good. The General wasn't really spicy & the fried rice was very good! Great service as well! The restaurant would earn 4 stars from me, mostly for the fact that they are perhaps one of a few Chinese restaurants in town and surrounding areas that serve authentic food and sell Asian groceries and produce. The food is good, but only because we want Chinese food and cannot get "big city level" of Chinese food around here. (Tears from still missing the dim sum at the closed Hong Kong Tea House, when they had a chef from San Francisco.). Overall, though, the food can be good (inconsistent), and we do enjoy the restaurant. The restaurant would earn 1.5 - 2 stars for their tip gouging. My family has eaten there many times before (up to 6 or more, depending on when they have visited), and they have never placed a mandatory tip. Recently, however, we tipped the wait person cash and paid for the food by credit. We did not notice until later that they still charged tip on the credit card! Only 5 of us!! As a result, they received a 30% tip!!!! We were never told that this was new or anything, and it is not stated on the menu or anywhere in the store. Their service isn't stellar; It is really hit or miss. On this day, it was mediocre. My 4 star for food/groceries availability and 1.5-2 stars for this $ issue averages 3 stars I suppose. People, ask for an itemized receipt if you eat a lot and/or buy a lot of groceries. read more

Mr. Chen's didn't disappoint. Their lunch specials are extremely reasonable, and just as generous. I got the general tsos chicken lunch special, and my husband got the ginger onion shrimp so we could try some Americanized vs more traditional dishes. Both were tasty! We plan to come back and try the eggplant and basil pork (which was recommended by the waiter) and the more traditional Taiwanese dishes. Man oh man! This place is a GEM! My buddy and I got takeout for dinner here and made our own cornucopia. Duck buns (OMG), crazy spicy chicken, basil chicken and salted crispy shrimp. The buns were absolutely delicious, gimme all the duck. The crazy spicy chicken was delicious as well. All of it was amazing. Mr.Chen's is a favorite place to bring groups or just a few. They have such a large menu selection!! I love Kung Pao chicken and the Spicy bean sauce with chicken, but their Thai chow fun noodles were amazing also. no matter what you try you can't go wrong!! read more

I am from San Francisco where some of the best Chinese food is. I visited Mr.Chen's Authentic Chinese Cooking when I was here in Mississippi for vacation. This restaurant lives up to it's name! Since I was traveling with my parents, they always want Chinese food and this place serves food that tasted like home. The food is very authentic and fresh. Food - The favorite dish we had here was a Chicken dish they recommended. I couldn't remember the name of it, but it tasted like Popcorn chicken. We ordered a Seaweed soup that says it serves two people but it really served all four of us with leftovers. They also serve Boba Milk Tea that I didn't try but I was surprised that they sell it. Ambiance - The restaurant is decorated pretty nicely. There is plenty of seating with booths or bigger tables for larger parties. It is connected to a grocery store so you have to enter the grocery store first. Make a sharp left and you are at the restaurant. Service - The workers are very friendly as well. We told them we were on a time crunch and our food came out quickly even though there were so many people at the restaurant. Overall, if you are looking for tasty authentic Chinese food, I recommend Mr. Chen's Authentic Chinese Cooking. read more

I'm Chinese and live in NYC, but this is one of the best Chinese restaurants I've been to in the country. My family lives here now and I come to Mr. Chen's almost every time I'm in Jackson. Step away from the faux-Chinese food (egg rolls, kung pao chicken, etc.) and try some of the authentic stuff - you won't regret it!! This place will definitely be our favorite restaurant. We were craving for real Chinese food instead of buffet type. We were staying in North China for 6 years+, so real deal Chinese food is the best food. And, we are so exciting when first time we shop here that they also have restaurant. The service is pretty good. Don't expect high standard American service. Love the hot honey green tea and Taiwanese Wonton soup. Those are awesome!!! Definitely we will be back. read more

With a Health Score of B I should have been forewarned. Maybe the worst Chinese I've ever encountered in all my travels. Egg rolls like seaweed donuts, EggDrop soup with pools of Oil floating on surface and Im still perplexed at the dish that was represented as Kung Pao chicken. My date had a Shrimp dish that we had a hard time finding any crustaceans in... Usually a safe call at any Chinese restaurant....... It's not clean. And someone told them if you serve the dishes steaming hot you can pass with subpar dishes. In a city with great dining establishments this is not one of them .... Management was very friendly and made an attempt to appease our disappointment but it is not a good place to dine. read more

Mr. Chen's is an Asian grocery store with fresh, frozen, and packaged goods. They also happen to have a fantastic restaurant with great food! They have roasting ducks in a little window that give it an authentic feeling, they're also quite delicious with scallion pancakes and hoisin sauce! This place is a must when in Jackson! read more

My husband and I have had such a hard time finding Asian markets here in MS but this one is amazing...the market and the restaurant were very nice. Hands down the best Asian cuisine in Mississippi. We eat here at least once a month and every American holiday. The steamed dumplings and scallion pancake are tremendous. I can't comment on the entrees as much because I always get the exact same thing. The Cashew Chicken it's absolutely superb! Best Chinese is Jackson! However, it can be a little inconsistent. I also don't believe they pay much attention to special requests so if you're a picky eater this may not be the place for you. I requested vegetable fired rice with extra egg and found little to no egg in my dish when I began to eat it. Not a huge problem for a flexible person like me. What I also enjoy about this place is they have amazing vegetarian options! Beware though...a lot of their vegetable sides come with meat so you will have to specify when you want it meatless! This restaurant is inside of a grocery store so don't be offended by the mixture of smells you might experience. Never again. Ordered takeout for lunch. Cashew Shrimp, Sesame Chicken and Turnip Cake. There was one shrimp in a nasty, broken, congealed sauce, and no cashew. Not one. The Sesame Chicken was in exactly the same sauce and there was no sign of a Sesame Seed. The Turnip Cake was burned. While I was waiting, a youngish man, who apparently worked there, kept walking by an open container of melon seeds that were for sale. Every time he walked past he grabbed a handful. Didn't use the scoop, just his bare hands. I have to wonder what the kitchen must look like with that sort of behavior happening in the front of the store. I have to say that my meal was delicious and the pricing was fair, but maybe I was expecting a bit too much from the hype I've heard. I would definitely recommend you check this place out! Since it is attached to the grocery store, which has live fish and other seafood, there can sometimes be a fishy aroma when you first walk in the door. That's the only negative thing I can say about Mr. Chen's. I will be back again to try some new things. The menu extensive, and it was hard to decide on what to order. This place was listed as the best Chinese restaurant in Mississippi in an internet review the other day. I'd never heard of it even though I live fairly close. Thought I'd give it as try. I haven't eaten at all of the Chinese restaurants in Mississippi......yet, but this place measured up to that internet review. The staff was extremely friendly and knew the menu very well. (You won't believe that menu. 2" thick listing of awesome food!) I got the Mongolian Beef. It was superb!! After I ate, I checked out the grocery store. It's loaded with all sorts of surprises!! The meat section has some of the biggest, live Dungeness crabs that I have ever seen! Plus they have a large selection of lamb. They have all of the cooking items that you would ever want. A rare gem hidden in a mini-mall. So glad I read that review!! read more
