They give large portions for the price, which undoubtedly satisfies people who want to eat a lot, but I'd rather have more emphasis put on the ingredients and have a smaller portion. I went to Mr. Chen's with 2 friends a little after noon on a Wednesday. We were greeted and seated as soon as we came in, and our order was taken quickly. The dining room was clean and well decorated. The menu was easy to read and organized by appetizer, soup, specials, etc. I ordered the orange chicken and some egg drop soup. None of our food was served cold, but my soup was given to me with a large ladle instead of a spoon, and no spoon was provided. The orange chicken was some of the best I've ever had, you could tell just by smelling it that the sauce was made with fresh oranges. Our server was very kind, but took a long time to get our check to us. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to my friends, however I would maybe suggest calling in your order so the check is taken care of sooner. read more

My family and I went to Mr. Chen's on Christmas Eve. We arrived at 5:45 pm and were seated quickly. We had six children with us, so we ordered promptly. The server warned us that the kitchen was overwhelmed and would take 20 minutes to bring us out food. One hour later, the table next to us -- which had arrived and ordered after we did -- had been served all of its many dishes and was enjoying fortune cookies. Our first dish arrived thereafter when our server told us he had "stolen" an item from someone else's order. Unfortunately, he stole a spicy dish that we had ordered mild for the kids, so he had to take it back. Our second encounter with the food was when a server told us that the restaurant had no string beans. They offered us Chinese broccoli as an alternative, which we accepted. When I asked our server where our food was and why the neighboring table had progressed so much faster, his response was that the other table had a different server (!!). When we approached the other server, our food began to arrive immediately. It was good but not worth a 90-minute wait. Of course we had to ask for a check that was not brought to us, and the check had both the string beans and Chinese broccoli on it. I had hoped that the terrible service would have been compensated with a discount, but they went the other way and overcharged us for food we never got. I cannot imagine voluntarily going there again. I downloaded the Yelp app just to write this review and prevent future innocent victims from losing an entire evening to Mr. Chen's. read more

This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in Jackson. One of my friends dubbed it 'Flavor Town' and we try to go as often as we can. Since I moved to ATL that hasn't happened often, but I visit every time I return, both the grocery and the restaurant. It is definitely the best Chinese place in Jackson , hands down. It is not your typical Chinese place. There are no buffets, but each portion is family sized, even their soups. They also have filling lunch specials for a good price. This is a quaint place inside a grocery store. So, don't expect table clothes and a 'fine dining' experience. However, the food is amazing and the place is clean. My favorites are Kung Pao Shrimp, Wonton Soup, and Sweet Pea Leaves. The best thing and what makes it unique is the vast Asian grocery store that the restaurant is in. We eat here all the time when we need to pick up something from the Asian Grocery. They have great prices in the grocery store too. Some things we pick up there regularly are Baby Bok Choy, tofu , gyoza, wonton wrappers, etc. read more

Definitely one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area. My boyfriend and I order take out from here on a weekly basis. We always get the General Tsos Chicken. It is the BEST General Tsos that I have ever had. It's got jusssst the right amount of kick to it without being too overwhelming. Their dinner portion is huge. What happened to their food? It used to be well seasoned, taste fresh, flavorful, and decent portions. Now, the dishes are smaller and too salty. The Sweet Shrimp dish had half the amount of shrimp, the batter was soggy, and the pineapple dry. The best Chinese food you can find in the Jackson metro area. Don't get me wrong, there's definitely "Americanized" Chinese food on the menu (General Tso's chicken & the like). But if you order well, it's easily the most authentic Chinese food you'll find in the area. Is it comparable with Chinatown in NYC or actual China? No. Is it easily the best you can get without driving to Houston, Atlanta, etc.? Absolutely. (Note: this is in regards to authentic Chinese food. If you're all about the Chinese buffets, I don't know that this will be your favorite restaurant.) Also, the atmosphere is a bit odd. We're used to it now, but it is inside a grocery store so kind of a weird ambience, but once you're seated you can easily forget you're in a grocery store. My coworkers talk about this place often, so I decided to give it a try. I ordered the Kung Pao Chicken Lunch meal. I'd say that 50% or more of the main dish was zucchini. There were also carrots, mushrooms and small pieces of chicken. Many of the "chicken" pieces were actually just batter. Fried rice was mushy and did not have much flavor. I will not be back as there are definitely much better options out there. Service could also be better. I ordered Take Out and when I picked up there were no napkins/utensils in the bag. The restaurant is in the left front corner of the Market, so when you walk in you might get a sniff of the live seafood market in the back, but do not be put off, go to the left and the smell quickly disappears.
