    Beef bao

Great little place with good food. Attentive and friendly service; quick as well. Lovely setting with great decoration. It is true that some of the dishes can have too much sauce but it is also the best part of some (for instance that is the best part of the spinach!). In any case, my mom and I found everything tasty. Will definitely drop by again!

Very good place for Bao. I had their Mr Bao (with pork belly) and their Bao Diddley (with fried chicken) which were both really tasty although a little bit pricey given the size. Service is good.

With the rise of Bao restaurants in London, I wouldn't be surprised if London Town soon became Bao Town. With a new Bao restaurant south of the river I thought I'd get a piece of the action. The restaurant has a great feel and set up on entrance and the food on neighbouring tables looked great. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, recommending approximately 8 dishes between two people in order to ensure our appetite was satisfied. We ended up selecting the Pork Belly Bao and Lamb Bao as our Bao buns. The pork arrived first and this did not disappoint. The buns were light and fluffy and had a great texture, similarly to the Char Sui buns that are always ordered when seen on any menu. The pork belly itself was divine and full of flavour. Swiftly upon inhaling the pork Bao, the lamb arrived which was equally as tasty packed with pickled onions and a fresh mint sauce. Nibbles were also order on the side including fried chicken and sweet potato chips. Both of these had a different themed mayo drizzle on top. The Miso mayo was complimentary of the fried chicken and the Wasabi mayo was well matched with the sweet potato chips. Surprisingly there was still space for dessert, named Bao S'More. The fried Bao with melted chocolate and toasted marshmallow was heaven on a plate. It was the perfect way to end the meal, following through with the Bao theme.

I must say I tactically turned up after lunchtime rush hour one weekday and was glad to find it half packed. It meant we had a choice of seats. In front by the window seats. Or by the bar and watching the chef. Ding ding. Give me chef seats anyday. That's not to say it's a big or luxurious kitchen. It isn't. Mr Bao is a small place in a corner of Peckham with a small kitchen to be honest. But really, it is small but perfectly formed. I will say firstly what made it so great is the outstanding yet relaxed service. From the server, to the cocktail guy to the chefs themselves. All talkative and conversational and chilled whilst being on point. This is exactly the type of place and attitude I love. Not too invasive but just good to chat to and good recommendations. The food was excellent value too. About £30 for two with a lot of dishes ordered. The Bao's are huge, lamb (special), pork, prawn. All good. The fried chicken. Haven't seen many get it wrong but done right it's a winner and these guys do it right. What stood them apart and this is in most of their dishes is that it's all about the added sauce too. Wasabi and Kewpie Mayo. Called it Miso Mayo. Brilliant. I'm gonna make this myself too now. Stolen idea for home. Love the combo of that. Edamame beans had a nice spicy kick too with the sauce on top. The sweet potato fries are too die for. Add any of their sauces they give. I got another out of that Mayo too which they gladly gave. Might well have trumped even the fried chicken. Not a statement I would ever make lightly. The Taiwanese sausage is my only dish that I wasn't too fussed over. Sesame spinach was OK as a little side dish to get some greens in. By the end though the barman had even let us try a drink he was trying out. Which was fantastic btw. Can't say enough of how much the flow of the meal was so good with the way we chatted to throughout. All in all, a wonderful experience with great value in a part of town I'm really liking more and more. And now with Mr Bao a place to add to that I would trek across town just for and make a day/evening of. Well done guys. I'll be back for sure.

This recently just opened. Will keep this short as I have very little to say apart from its really really tasty, the price is reasonable too. EAT THE SMORES! The baos are small so maybe two per person is good if you are hungry. I went for breakfast and the sausages were stratospheric in flavour. A great addition to an already awesome selection of Peckham eateries

My husband and I stopped by here last night around 6:30 with no rez. We were seated promptly: it's a small space packed in with chairs and tables but we both agreed we liked the bustling environment. I got the peach beer and he the Japanese whiskey (pricey for £6 for 25mL). The beer was refreshingly peachy with no beery aftertaste I hate. And it's low alcohol too. I got the tofu and mushroom baos and the shrimp dumplings special and he the beef brisket bao and pork dumplings. The baos arrived promptly, fresh out of the cooker, and our table always had promptly refilled a carafe of water. We both agreed our pillowy baos and their fillings were fantastic: moreish and the fried onions atop really enhanced the flavours. There was an extended lull between the baos and the dumplings so we had to ask a waitress what was the holdup and she let us know it would be soon. Kindly she offered us a bowl of hot, deep-fried sweet potato fries on the house. TBH the fries are really bland and the mayo sauce accompanying it was nothing special so we mostly left it untouched. But the dumplings when we got them are lovely! About four in a serving, mine came with a sesame and honey sauce and my husband's a spicy chili sauce. They were firm and packed full of their respective ingredients. I made the mistake of ordering another mushroom bao when I should have waited for my food to settle as I ended up being too full after eating that. For £40 for two people not a bad price after all. Plus the service was excellent with empty plates speedily taken away. I would definitely return.

Discovered Mr Bao in Peckham today. It looked busy and welcoming from the outside. Food: 6/10 - The baos were light and spongey. Ordered the chicken, prawn and pork belly bao. The pork belly was good but was "missing" some spices. Taiwanese sausage didn't taste like the original and was on the salty side. Service: 6/10 - Perhaps it was a busy time so service was a little erratic. Interior Decor: 8/10 - Embraced the Chinese New Year theme throughout, especially the Chinese lanterns, couplets at the door and mahjong set at the door way) A trendy place and interesting interpretation of Taiwanese food.

Extremely disappointed in this place. The food looks good but they are to heavy handed with the sauce. They slather so many if their dishes with this mayo which kills the flavor. The portions are ridiculously small. Even though each dish is cheap, you get a few bites per plate. I spent £30 for two people with no drinks and walked away starving. For Street food, this is inexcusable. The vibe is good and the staff friendly enough which justifies the second star but I would not go back for this place.

My husband and I were strolling along the streets of Peckham on this relaxed Sunday and came across Mr Bao (which he previously made note of when finding it online earlier in doing research about the neighborhood). We looked at the menu and were enticed to try it. We were not disappointed! It was fun to order a bunch of menu items and share; our server was helpful in recommending the amount of portions to order, since the size of each of their offerings is small (from their regular menu; we were told if ordering from the brunch menu, those portions are enough for one plate per person to be satisfied). We drank two hot teas while eating Kimchi, raw spinach with a peanut-sesame sauce drizzled over the top, pork dumplings, and four different types of Bao. We found the Bao to be creative, fresh, and tasty with a variety of sauces, toppings, and meat/veggies/tofu as the main ingredient in each. Overall, we were pleased. The prices are reasonable, too (all of this came to about £34, without tip included). Whether you've never tried Taiwanese food before or you already love it, this is your spot!

The bar is tucked under Antico restaurant on Bermondsey street. Not only do they love gin - they make their own tonic water! What I was keen to do is introduce my non gin drinking colleagues to something they might like. This is where a large gin selection comes in handy, tasting flights of gin help too... We started off with a Tour of London gin flight. You get three different gins from around London and a bottle of tonic to top up after trying them neat (naturally! Luckily my colleagues were up for this!) You are meant to try the gins and then guess which is which from the list. When you've made your choice you open the envelope and see if you were right! These are the ones we had in our London flight: Half Hitch, which is made down the road from me (we tried it last year at the Oliver Conquest gin tasting), Little Bird made in Peckham, and Moonshine Kid Dog's Nose made in Bethnal Green. We got the last two the wrong way round, but the Half Hitch was easy to find with its Bergamot notes and tinge of colour from the tea. Next up was Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition, where we fared better with three out of three correct! This included one of my favourites, Gin Mare, from the Costa Dorada made with Mediterranean herbs and olives, Larios 12 from Malaga orange citrus heavy and the secret blend of Xoriguer Mahon from Menorca, which is aged in oak. For those less interested in gin I found out what they liked and ordered accordingly. Sean got a navy strength gin neat (he's a whisky drinker - I would normally suggest an aged gin for them, but the Bathtub Aged was sold out!). Jerome doesn't like tonic, so for him something spicy, Opihr and ginger ale, which went down well. I also got Sangdeep out of his Hendricks comfort zone to try Monkey 47! They make their own tonic here - naturally darker as they soak the quinine in it to flavour, rather than using the extract. For me it's not going to rival the FeverTree range, but it was something different - I can't quite get over the colour though, it made picking the gin from the ginger ale very difficult! We also grabbed some nibbles as responsible drinkers. The meat platter and bread with oil was lovely - all from Antico restaurant upstairs. 214 Bermondsey is definitely worth a visit with a fair selection of gins and lovely staff to help you choose some to try out - think I'll be back here!
