    Tea Steeped Chickpeas (vegan)
    Matt B.

Very tasty, creative Indian food with a separate vegan menu that has plenty of options. They have pretty well-priced mains such that you can order a variety of small portioned mains and keep the cost reasonable. I got: -Tea Steeped Chickpeas (£5) -- really nice tangy tomato-ey sauce, well-spiced, with a touch of spinach. Really nice chickpea dish. 4/5 -Green Ginger & Rhubarb Dahl (£5) -- this was the highlight for me. The combo of the rhubarb and ginger create this lovely spicy, tangy, complex base. Excellent. 5/5 -Calcutta Tangled Greens (£4.50) -- this sort of reminded of sauerkraut with an Indian flare: somewhat pickled, full of coriander and black mustard seed. Good stuff. 4/5 -Tandoori Roti (£3.75 for 2 pcs) -- two thin pieces of whole wheat flatbread -- nice accompaniment to scoop up the saucy dishes. Everything was very good, especially the rhubarb daal -- damn was that nice -- never had anything like it. Service was friendly, astute and quick; and the place was as definitely upper scale-feeling despite the reasonable prices. Great spot.

My favorite restaurant in Liverpool! The vegetarian options are amazing, we always order enough variety dishes to share amongst ourselves. So delicious!! Highly recommend

My sister-in-law raves about this place, and for Christmas, my mother-in-law gifted all of us a giftcard to have a sibling dinner out. The interior of this restaurant is pretty cool. The 6 of us were seated upstairs. I had a Pineapple-Chili Lime lassi (3.95) to drink which was nice, but the menu mentioned it would have a tantalizing kick, but there was no detectable spice to it at all which was disappointing. We shared an order of Yoghurt Chat Bombs (4.95) for the table. It comes with 5 little small fried puffs filled with yogurt. They were good, but forgettable. I wouldn't order these again. I'm surprised since the menu and our server mentioned this was the house specialty and the dish they as best known for. We were told 2-3 dishes per person was a good amount to order. We ordered our dishes to share with our partner, so my husband and I ordered 4 dishes for us to share and this was definitely enough food for us. My husband and I ordered the Gunpowder Chicken (6.25) which was pretty good. I'd order this again. I liked the crispy chicken and the seasoning. We ordered the Maa's Lamb Chops & Tumeric Chips (8.75). This easily was my favorite dish of the night. The lamb chops were beautifully seasoned and cooked perfectly. It also came with a heaping amount of tasty little potatoes too. We also ordered the Mowgli Paneer (6.95) which is a "Staff Favorite". I liked this dish, but the sauce was a little sweet and this dish was pretty forgettable. I wouldn't order this again. We ordered the House Lamb Curry (6.95) which good, but it wasn't spicy. We tried our sibling's dish of Mowgli House Keema which I definitely preferred the sauce better since it had a nice kick to it, but the meat is minced which isn't as nice. I also tried the Treacle Tamarind Fries that my sister-in-law ordered, but they were a bit sickly sweet. I almost ordered those, so I'm pretty glad I didn't. One bite of those was enough and it was a big portion. Our server recommended that we order 3 Basmati Rices (2.50 each) and 3 Puri bread (2.60 for 2) for the table. I didn't care for the Puri which didn't absorb the sauce very well. Near the end of my meal, I like to dip it in the end of my curry dishes, but you can't do that with Puri. I wouldn't order the Puri again; I'd get the roti bread I guess. I just wish they had naan. At the end of my meal I had the Turmeric Latte which was just okay. I think it could have been a bit creamier. It was slightly chalky. I wouldn't order this again either. Overall, I enjoyed my meal and ambiance here. It was nice! I'm waffling between 3 and 4 stars. I definitely liked it here and I would come back, but I also think I'd try some different dishes. I would definitely order the Lamb Chops again which was the standout dish for me. My husband and I both really liked that one and I don't even like meat on the bone usually. I also would love to try the Office Worker's Tiffin which is pretty cute and comes with 4 dishes picked out by the chef. I love that idea and I like the presentation. Anyway, I'd happily come back for the cool vibes, good atmosphere, nice food and creative menu.

What a find! On our quick day trip to Liverpool Mowgli was referred to us by a friend and we did not leave disappointed. Everything was a flavor explosion in our mouths! It's tapas style, so everything isn't huge, but also not tiny - just right. Prices are very reasonable - mostly ranging from 4GPB to 8GBP per item. The server sent around the yoghurt chat bombs to start. These are two little balls filled with spiced yogurt that are literally a flavor bomb in your mouth. Must must try. From there we shared 6 dishes. The Mowgli chip butty is spiced potato's in a wrap. Why didn't I think of this sooner? My two favorite carbs wrapped in one. Delicious and flavorful. Must try. The Himalayan cheese toast was also delicious. Served with a side of Indian pickles. Very salty pickles but the cheese toast was great. This was followed by the gunpowder chicken. Small fried Chunks of chicken with a delicious sauce. The Mowgli paneer was to die for. Chunks of cheese with a sweet and spicy sauce. Wow. Get this. Finally we finished with the Butter chicken and Calcutta tangled greens. I would probably pass on these dishes next time. Everything else mentioned is a must order. The butter chicken was very buttery (ha) and not that unique. The greens were just odd and like a coleslaw. Couldn't be happier we found this place. And the service was superb. The entire bill was $53. And I'm so full I can't breathe. What a win. What an experience.

The vegan ginger and rhubarb dal. Don't question, JUST ORDER IT. To die for.

Is Berry & Rye the coolest drinking establishment in Liverpool? Very possibly…read more With its complete lack of signage, its blacked out windows and front door and the fact that you have to knock on said door to be allowed entry (if the doorman likes the look of you) you already know you're dealing with somewhere fairly high on the 'hipometer'. When you get in (and you could be waiting outside for a while on a Friday or Saturday as it's only small and VERY popular) you are greeted by a decor which is at once understated and incredibly clearly themed. You just feel like you're in Prohibition era in the Deep South. The staff come over with cocktail menus and glasses of water (again, very cool - this is no place for binge drinking) and give you plenty of time to pick your drink which is just as well as there is a LOT to choose from. The cocktails are sorted into spirit based groups which makes things pretty easy if you're a gin person versus a whisky person. Myself, I was immediately drawn to a cocktail called the Corpse Reviver. Not that I particularly needed reviving - it just sounded fun. It was. This is a lovely place to start, end or spend your entire night if you enjoy a relaxed and cool atmosphere and being able to hear yourself and your companions speak. Very classy joint indeed.

This location was recommended by a local so we tried it. Upon entering, it is a smaller establishment with a second floor. There are more tables up here, but it is a little warmer. The decor is very simple. This is one area they could possibly improve on. The staff was very friendly and courteous. They helped us to choose things from the menu and explained the items to us with detail. We tried several of the dishes here. We started with the flatbread and hummus. This was homemade and very delicious! We then had the ox cheek ragu and the chistorra sausage. Both of these dishes were very flavorful, especially the ox cheek. This was the first time I've had ox cheek and it was quite unexpected. The sausage was a little on the greasy side. Ox cheek won that round. Then we had the cauliflower and the Indian spiced bean. Both of these dishes were absolutely wonderful. This round was a tie. Last round we had the sea bass and the coley. Both of the fish dishes were very good, but the coley was phenomenal. I highly recommend this restaurant as it is tasty and priced very well. We will return at some point!

Good old Alma, been around for a while and still hasn't gotten any less pretentious. Don't get me…read morewrong, I love the actual place, its just the general clientele on Friday and Saturday nights that puts me off. For example, the last time I was there I was on a cocktail night with a group of girlfriends I hadn't seen for a while, and we were waiting patiently at a crowded bar at around midnight on a Friday. Next thing, this mid-to-late-30s guy cut between me and my friend as if trying to get through the crowd. The people around him attempted to give him some space, at which point he immediately elbowed his way to the front of the bar. He then leaned over the bar and thrust a wrinkled fiver in the hand of the nearest barman and said "I'm being served next". The barman attempted to explain that there were various other groups of people who had been waiting, and continued to serve the group he was with. And then he served this idiot. At this point, everyone around started tutting and I suggested in an undertone that we all tip our multi-coloured cocktails over his pristine white shirt. He is the reason I don't go to Alma on a weekend. Having said that, the decor is amazing, as it is an old church that has retained its altar and structure, but been glammed up with antler chandeliers and candles and dark and glamorous furniture. The cocktails are lovely if not a little pricey (mostly over £5 for the simplest) and the music is eclectic. There is also a restaurant upstairs which serves the standard small-servings-nicely-arranged-on-large-plates type food, and if you get there at the right time there is confetti thrown from the balconies and Cuban dancing girls entertaining everyone. On a weekday it is quieter and nicer and you don't feel so bad for not wearing the latest fashion trends. You can also see the bar from where you are sat. Overall, it's definitely somewhere I would recommend if you have never been, but only if you have the patience of a saint on a weekend!
