Lamb koftas at Maray.
Sam H.

I visited Maray for lunch with a friend from Liverpool, as we were looking for somewhere to grab a decent lunch before a couple of beers in the afternoon. We timed our arrival pretty much perfectly, and bagged the last available table. Other people who came in shortly after us were told there'd be a lengthy wait, as it's not the largest venue going. If you're set on visiting, and you really ought to be, then maybe book ahead. We went for their lunch deal, which was three plates for £12.50. We added a Spicy Berber Bowl, which is a selection of dips and flatbread, to this as a sharer and overall I think we got a good amount of food. Satisfactorily full, but not so full that you'd need a rest to let it settle. The three plates I went for were the lamb koftas, sprouts and falafel. My friend opted for the buttermilk fried chicken, cauliflower and sweet potato wedges. Firstly, the lamb koftas. I honestly don't know how they managed to cook them in one piece because you only had to nudge them and they fell apart. Really good, really tasty, and I could've readily eaten three lots of just these. The sprouts were simply roasted, with harissa and peanuts, finished with a bit of kimchi. Even if you hate sprouts, because you've had them horrendously cooked for a Christmas dinner and you swore never to touch them again... these would get you back on side. Brilliant dish. The falafel were just as great as the rest of the meal. Admittedly I'd have preferred slightly larger falafel to go with the generous portion of houmous, tabbouleh and harissa they were sat on, but that might just be me being a greedy so and so. The falafel weren't dry at all, even without the accompaniments, and the flavour was excellent. The cauliflower my friend ordered was on another level, and honestly I didn't think anyone could make cauliflower look that good. If I were to go back to Maray, which I would do in an instant, I'd definitely order this. The buttermilk fried chicken also looked great, as did the sweet potato wedges. At under £30 all in for both of us, including the starter and a beer each, you can't complain at the value here. If you're after a cracking lunch spot offering something a bit different, and with a lot of veggie options that taste amazing, Maray is definitely the place to go.

Maray came as a strong recommendation from a friend who traveled to Liverpool previously, and I will be strongly passing the recommendation forward as well. The Berbert tasting bowl was a great starter, but the seared scallops and lamb shawarma were both phenomenal. Each dish was served over two light dipping sauces and both were surprisingly filling. While the prices are a little steep for the portions, the quality is there and the service was excellent.

The menu is fairly hit or miss but the hits are awesome!!! We had a variety of dishes that were either not for us, or amazingly delicious. We were recommended to come here by a variety of people, and the drinks did not disappoint. Be sure to make a reservation, as the small restaurant fills up very quickly!!

Seriously good falafel and tabouli

Have been meaning to visit Maray for ages and finally this evening I got round to it for a post work glass of vino and North African snack with a friend. Great choice. I picked the tall stools/breakfast bar style area on the left as you go in (over the long shared table down the middle of the room which was already busy) and awaited my friend whilst looking at the simple but classy drinks menu. Tempting as the cocktails were (and bear in mind Maray's tag line is 'falafel & cocktails') I decided to go for the Merlot. My decadent friend when he arrived chose the slightly more expensive Malbec. These are the only two wines by the glass but were excellent. The tapas size 'small plates' that we chose (halloumi for him, a falafel, houmous & tabouli plate for me) were absolutely delicious. Small but perfectly formed. The service was delightful and the atmosphere extremely welcoming. So much so that my friend announced just before we left that he may choose Maray as the destination for his date tomorrow night! I'd call that a result! I will also be returning, that's for sure.

Chicken Wings. Jenga anyone?

Lovely place, great service. I love the long shared tables. The sandwiches in the lunch menu are actually wraps, which I prefer. The lam one is gorgeous. My vegetarian friend had the falafel large plate. He loved the homemade falafel balls (very tasty), but didn't enjoy the pita bread that much.

Review Highlights - Maray

It really does kinda feel like a party on a plate, lots of sauces splattered atop a piece of a cauliflower.

Is Berry & Rye the coolest drinking establishment in Liverpool? Very possibly…read more With its complete lack of signage, its blacked out windows and front door and the fact that you have to knock on said door to be allowed entry (if the doorman likes the look of you) you already know you're dealing with somewhere fairly high on the 'hipometer'. When you get in (and you could be waiting outside for a while on a Friday or Saturday as it's only small and VERY popular) you are greeted by a decor which is at once understated and incredibly clearly themed. You just feel like you're in Prohibition era in the Deep South. The staff come over with cocktail menus and glasses of water (again, very cool - this is no place for binge drinking) and give you plenty of time to pick your drink which is just as well as there is a LOT to choose from. The cocktails are sorted into spirit based groups which makes things pretty easy if you're a gin person versus a whisky person. Myself, I was immediately drawn to a cocktail called the Corpse Reviver. Not that I particularly needed reviving - it just sounded fun. It was. This is a lovely place to start, end or spend your entire night if you enjoy a relaxed and cool atmosphere and being able to hear yourself and your companions speak. Very classy joint indeed.

I'd eaten a Christmas meal here and everything. I'm like that guy from that film about the amnesiac. I forget his name. The problem with the Cavern Quarter Revolution is that once the old vodka is sloshing around your brain you'll begin to store the memory of it as taking place in the Wood Street branch. They all look identical anyway. Actually the Crimbo meal here, safely tucked away in a private room upstairs away from the riff-raff, was a good-quality, low-cost affair that would probably make Santa grin if he existed.

We were taken upstairs to our own private room in the bar where we got a cocktail demo and each got to go behind the bar and make our own cocktails. The guy doing the demo made it fun and was happy to help us get all the techniques right (much harder than it looks!). We were a group of about ten and were 30 minutes late but he made sure he whizzed through it do we each got a go. The dinner afterwards was pretty average. We were seated on two very small tables between the 10 of us which made for quite a crowded table. I ordered the chicken starter (was ok, nothing special), rump steak and fries (again ok, but the steak could have been better quality - was quite chewy), and a chocolate brownie desert (a little dry, could have had more ice cream and less brownie to balance it out). Overall I'd give the cocktail session a 4 but the food a 2. It really wasn't memorable at all.

Don't get me…read morewrong, I love the actual place, its just the general clientele on Friday and Saturday nights that puts me off. For example, the last time I was there I was on a cocktail night with a group of girlfriends I hadn't seen for a while, and we were waiting patiently at a crowded bar at around midnight on a Friday. Next thing, this mid-to-late-30s guy cut between me and my friend as if trying to get through the crowd. The people around him attempted to give him some space, at which point he immediately elbowed his way to the front of the bar. He then leaned over the bar and thrust a wrinkled fiver in the hand of the nearest barman and said "I'm being served next". The barman attempted to explain that there were various other groups of people who had been waiting, and continued to serve the group he was with. And then he served this idiot. At this point, everyone around started tutting and I suggested in an undertone that we all tip our multi-coloured cocktails over his pristine white shirt. He is the reason I don't go to Alma on a weekend. Having said that, the decor is amazing, as it is an old church that has retained its altar and structure, but been glammed up with antler chandeliers and candles and dark and glamorous furniture. The cocktails are lovely if not a little pricey (mostly over £5 for the simplest) and the music is eclectic. There is also a restaurant upstairs which serves the standard small-servings-nicely-arranged-on-large-plates type food, and if you get there at the right time there is confetti thrown from the balconies and Cuban dancing girls entertaining everyone. On a weekday it is quieter and nicer and you don't feel so bad for not wearing the latest fashion trends. You can also see the bar from where you are sat. Overall, it's definitely somewhere I would recommend if you have never been, but only if you have the patience of a saint on a weekend!
