Other regulars have told me about the landlady's rudeness to customers but this was the first time it was directed at me. It was humiliating and I won't drink here again. The food was great English comfort food, the beer was perfect, and the prices were good. It was busy, but not too busy. There was music playing over the radio, but it wasn't too loud to talk. The downstairs interior is mainly booths with chipped formica tables and mini jukeboxes that don't work any more. There used to be a large jukebox near the stairs leading up to the function room, but I think it's been scrapped. I don't remember seeing it last time I was there, at least. The upstairs function room isn't quite so shabby, and I remember a few years ago when they held a karaoke competition up there and it was a huge success. Until I didn't win, of course. The bar offers double and triple spirits for a ridiculously low price, and also has a decent selection of bottles and draught beer. The food is typical student stuff, with chip butties and full Englishes all on the board next to the bar. A basic full English starts at £1.95, just for an idea of how cheap it actually is. The pub mainly has jukebox music but occasionally you'll find a live act on. The function room was also used to give pole dancing classes a while back, but I doubt that goes on anymore. (More's the pity). I have to say that despite its shabbiness and obvious appeal to squanderers and students, The Pilgrim holds a place close to my heart and if I lived nearer to the city centre I would aim to make it my local.

Forget a doubles bar, The Pilgrim is a triples bar and with a small selection of ales too, you can see why this place has been a student favourite for decades. As you descend the old stone steps into the main drinking area, you get a sense of tradition amongst the dark wood interior and murals along the walls. With a covered patio area at the front to boot, The Pilgrim provides a handy arena for us smokers too.

We agreed that most of the wooden surfaces are likely to be warped due to the years of soaking up spilt alcohol. It's a nice pub, pretty much standing alone in the midst of some sort of time warp battle. To the front of it you can see the docks and all the old architecture (what remains, anyway). Directly behind is a building site that appears to have been neglected midway due to lack of funds or something. And then further away you can see all the new developments that have sprung up in the last 5 years thanks to the Liverpool One project. The pub isn't attached to anything anymore, so it has the effect of being a boat moored in ambiguous waters. Inside, there are two small bars and two main drinking rooms, with additional area upstairs if the pub gets too crowded (which I can't imagine it does). The prices are what you'd expect and the decor sparse, with the exception of various nautical memorabilia and a swathe of pictures on all walls depicting various mariner's scenes. Altogether a nice little pub lost at sea.

No fruit machines or pool tables blight this place which is a grand idea, but I was curious as to why they have no jukebox. On their website they note how they consider this minus to be a plus but the silence just made the pub feel like it was about to shut. As Liverpool's last surviving sailortown pub, the Baltic Fleet has a strong seafaring theme, right from its fearsome name to the maritime decorations on the walls. Sitting inside with the wind blasting down the dock road outside can fool you into thinking you're onboard a steamer crossing the icy North Atlantic. Or maybe that was just the cider.

The restaurant side was relatively quiet with some large tables. You could hear music coming from the lively bar area. The food was surprisingly good. I had the fish n chips with curry sauce and it was fresh and tasty. I did not care for the peas. My wife had the scouse which was also very flavorful. We were able to try some local dishes with a twist and the service was good. Not a bad experience.

Service was a little hit or miss. And the food was ok, but some of the order was messed up..ie "is there lettuce n tomatoes in the burger?" Answer, was yes and there wasn't any. Martin's Kareoke is the order of the day for a Friday and Saturday night and if I was to make a call between the two I would err towards Friday just because the abundance of s**tfaced employees from the nearby offices tend to bring a touch more life to the place. There is little more depresing than having only a small group willing to put their hat in the ring for a karaoke night as several middle aged couples watch on silently as they try and think of something to say to each other. A good thing about this place are the curious out-of-towners that it attracts who are staying at the nearby hotels. Either they are often excited, wide-eyed groups enthralled by a night out in Liverpool or are the star attraction themselves as they go mental on their hols and are often up for getting involved with the locals.

Jutting off the main thoroughfare of Dale Street, the Rose & Crown is no doubt incredibly venerated but is isn't particularly memorable. Inside, the darkness and karaoke make an hour seem like a whole night. I visited here about eight in the evening and was struck by how the world seemed to vanish. It felt as if I'd blinked and it was now suddenly 5am and everyone in the outside world was slumbering soundly, with visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads. This is the sort of pub that is suited more for an afternoon pint. It's also the location where the founders of Saint Francis Xavier's Church met to establish their parish in 1840 so, you know, get going on any big ideas you may have.

Sadly, School Lane isn't what it used to be, what with all the charm demolished by Liverpool One and all the tramps forced to pee and beg elsewhere. I was told that various buildings in School Lane were listed, and The Old Post Office was one of them, meaning it couldn't be demolished along with Quiggins. Which was great for little old steak-lover me. It was never a particularly busy pub, what with being at the back of everything, but now with the new shops around it I hope business is booming. Now, back to the steak. Served on a sizzling red hot metal platter, you need to leave it a while before you add any sauces, otherwise it will just dry up or disintegrate. I found this the hard way when I put a generous portion of mustard next to the steak, looked up to resume the conversation I was having, and when I next looked back, the mustard had reduced to a dry brown scab on my plate. However, the meat itself is cooked to perfection and as I've already mentioned, the price is right! Apart from the steak, everything else is standard pub issue, with the faded old pictures of days gone by and typical wooden fittings and fixtures. Hopefully somewhere that will be serving steak for many more years to come.
