He used to work in medical rehab so you can ask him all of your injury questions too. I've tried almost every running shoe and he sold me on some extremely comfortable pumas that felt like exactly what I was looking for. Just finding out that our health insurance offers a athletic shoe reimbursement, we looked up the qualifying stores and decided on Movin' Shoes based on the proximity to our house. The staff are so nice, it was relatively busy when we got there on a Saturday afternoon (the place is not huge, but I didn't feel claustrophobic either). We were greeted and suggested to browse around and someone would help us with the fitting. They do a walking test where the pros judge what type of shoe you need based on your posture. For example, I guess I was diagnosed that I tend to be more heavy footed towards the center of my feet so I was recommended a pair of sneaks that had more support in the middle. Wow, didn't know there was such science behind a walk. They are super chill and even let you take out your shoe out for a spin around the block (the sidewalks were sprinkled with salt and they insisted!). If they don't carry the color you like in store, they will gladly order it for you. I felt great leaving the store with a great pair of shoes and being able to support a local, small, brick-and-mortar store such as this. The space is not large and it was packed full of customers. Presumably, the proximity of spring encouraged people to make sure they had their running shoes (thats what I was here for!). First off, the staff here were very patient and helpful. They really listened carefully to our needs and brought several different pairs of shoes for us to try out. If you have questions on your running style, they can watch your gait size and educate you on what might work best for your feet. We never felt like we were pressured to make a purchase, and I think this is really important. They take the time to help but also leave you to make the best decision for you. Movin' Shoes is that good. 5 *'s, no question! MS has been around for more than 40 years! The staff is fantastic, made up of actual, local runners (many of whom I've found actually run to and from work!). They'll fit you for shoes, based on metrics, like pronation, and help you stay within your budget too. I've scraped through 3 pairs of shoes in 6 years and have never been disappointed in the slightest! If I was...they would take shoe returns within something like 7 or 10 days. Yep...shoe returns! And, MS will even let you try your shoes on before you buy them...EVEN run around outside a bit or around the block. An in-house treadmill is also available to use and test shoes. I tried messaging their Facebook page after a cheap ($10) clip-on running light burned out after less than an hour of use, which was supposed to last at least 10-15 hours. The account administrator responded to me within 30 minutes and we discussed replacement options. So, one night, I decided to run across the Isthmus and Lake Monona/Bay's shore and stop in. Yes...I ran there. Don't be hating! The light was a velcro strap light for an arm or leg, and it's been fantastic! I've had it for a few weeks and it is still working well. Their equipment is top notch, email list is fun, and they even have a running group (but I don't take part). If you're looking for running gear, get in step, lace em' up, and get movin' over to South Park Street!!! read more

Little known fact (that everyone knows as I talk about it way too much): I run. From 5k to marathons, if a race ends with a beer tent, I most likely will be there. This is hands-down the best place in Madison to buy running shoes...actually, it might be the best place in the world. I went to Movin' Shoes with a friend in December to step up my gear game (I'm an outdoor runner, and have been cheaping out on my equipment...bad idea). My friend is also a runner, and even belongs to the running club organized by the store. Her friend helped me out, bringing out nearly a dozen different shoes for me to try. I settled on a pair of Brooks, along with a Pearl Izumi jacket (LOVE!!) and a Brooks long sleeved running tee (also love!). The shoes, however, I did not love. They feel great to walk in, and felt OK at first when I started to run in them. However, after my usual 5K jog, I invariably ended up with painful blisters on the insides of both of my big toes. Ouch and yuck. However, I of course thought that the problem lay with me, and not the shoes, so I kept running in them...off and on for like 3 months. No bueno. Finally, I came to the realization (after a few chats with a few runners) that I've been running in footwear that simply does not work for my feet. I'd been told about Movin' Shoes' generous return policy, but I was SHOCKED that they took back my Brooks, and gave me the credit towards a new pair of New Balances. They also took plenty of time with me, listening to the issues I had had with the Brooks, and offering me several different styles and brands of shoes until I found the right ones. I've had some of the worst service of my life at Movin' Shoes. I went in looking for a pair of shoes for my brother for Christmas and luckily got a salesperson who was attentive and helpful. He brought out a few pair of shoes and recommended his favorites, and also pointed out the small (tiny) sale section in the middle of the store. That's where the positives ended. When it came time to ring me up, I was serviced by someone much older, who appeared to be either the manager or the owner. I asked him if I'd be able to receive the additional discount (~10% off) that my healthcare co offers me. He responded with a "WHAT?!" and said no, because it was already on sale. Yes, I'm familiar with how sales work. I know some stores don't offer an additional discount but I thought I'd ask. He proceeded to tell me that he was shocked I had asked because the sneakers were "so cheap" and that an additional 10% off "isn't that much anyway". I told him that $50 is more than just a few hours of work and he responded with, "Yeah exactly. It's only a few hours." I have never been more offended while buying something and honestly, I should have left the shoes on the counter and walked out. I don't need you to tell me to suck it up when I ask if I can receive a discount. Some advice for the people at Movin' Shoes: don't condescend to your customers. Don't ridicule them for politely asking a standard question, and don't assume what they can and cannot afford. I will never, ever come back here. read more

I used to be an avid runner and am looking to get into the sport again, so I wanted to go to a store that was a small, neighborhood business where I would be able to ask a lot of questions and find a shoe that was really going to work well for me. Going to Movin' Shoes was a huge waste of time. It was nearly impossible to get a salesperson to even acknowledge me, and then when one finally did come over, I explained what I was looking for and instead of asking me questions about my feet or my running style, he just gave me a vacant look. So I started to tell him about those things, and he just muttered "yeah well if you want to try something on, let me know" and walked away. I just gave up and walked out. Today I went in to Movin' Shoes looking for a new pair and I had one of the best experiences I've ever had purchasing shoes. A man named Tim analyzed my current pair and picked out a bunch of shoes that he thought would work best for me. He knows his stuff. After reading reviews and talking to other runners, I decided to head to Movin' Shoes. Absolutely the best decision I made this week! The store is pretty much a local legend, with all the local legends of running adoring the walls; you must see the mural on the wall! Anyway, I was greeted right away by Tom and told him my sad, sad story of plantar fasciitis. Within minutes he assessed my needs, disappeared to the back room and returned with a tower of shoe boxes. He told me it was important to try on multiple shoes and give them a tryout on the treadmill. Well, of course I did exactly as he said and ended up with a great pair of shoes! I've been a pretty dedicated runner for most of my life and I've been a longtime fan of Movin Shoes to facilitate my shoe buying needs. At various other times, I've stopped in to other local running stores, but I've never seen any of these other stores with as many options or as big of a selection. It seems rare that they have any kind of sale on their more popular shoes, but they also are very generous with their discounts (usually 10-12%) and even the up front prices run a few bucks off of what I've seen in at other stores in the area. I'm really glad to have a place where I can go and talk to people about anything running and try a pretty wide variety of shoes on. While some of my friends have shifted to buying shoes exclusively online, I think it's still pretty great to have a store with people you know and commitment not to just pull as much money out of my wallet as possible. read more
