Oh rats! I was hoping this place'd be better... Driven past this on roadtrips many a time; decided to actually stop in and check it out on the most recent trip. I'd been drawn in by the silly rodent statue on top of the building, because I like touristy shops. Upon entry I immediately realized the place was kind of dingy and gross. We got there with about half an hour 'til closing and this fact certainly showed in the affect of all the employees. I was curious about sampling some of the cheeses, but all of the employees were apparently too busy getting ready to close to help us, so we didn't get to try any of the many varieties. It was a bit odd to me to have potential customers there in the store during business hours, and the employees are steadfastly ignoring our presence to turn off the lights and such. We took the hint, quickly used the restroom, made a small courtesy purchase, then left. Speaking of the restroom, the floors were really sticky. Eww. Noticed they had lots of signage up that they were hiring. Yeah, they should probably hire someone who gives AF, if I'm being really honest, cuz it seems to me this place probably was great at one point but has fallen into disrepair. I got a couple pieces of taffy and hubby got a bag of nuts. We could tell from the taste/texture that these items had been sitting for awhile. I'm not a proponent of wasting food, but if your store can't turn products around before they're expired, I recommend perhaps just not selling those things and stick to cheese... Anyway, reckon we'll try out another of the many cheese shops in Wisconsin next time we drive through. There's certainly plenty to choose from! read more

Great place to stop for gifts and to stretch your legs after a long trip. This place is awesome, it's filled with every sort of cheese you can think of and they have legitimate hot combos here so be careful! You can also have this place ship cheese to relatives in other states. You can give them a little piece of wisconsin by shipping them great tasting cheese varieties. I asked about shipping to California and you must have a minimum of 30.00 in cheese products. There are other items here also worth looking at, there is something for everyone here. read more

Decided to stop in after seeing sign along the highway. The place is charming. The selection is really good. Was able to sample some fudge which was not bad. But we were really looking to get cheese. They have a very large selection. We ended up getting a variety of string cheeses and curds. However, what gives them the 3 stars is that while looking at their block cheese, they have signs offering samples. There were several that I would have liked to have sampled and possibly purchased. However, out of the 5 employees standing around laughing and joking, I could not get their attention to try any. It wasn't busy. Only one other couple in there browsing. As I said, we did make a purchase regardless. Just not the block cheeses I was looking at. Reason #2 is similar to previous reviews. The smoked string cheese is super salty. Great smoke flavor if you can get past the salt. read more

Very very very salty string cheese smoked and regular. Un edible. Stopped in because it was close to the airport. Next time I try a different shop. read more

Saw the billboard from the highway. Stopped in here and checked on yelp. Note to self, check in later. There was a 10% check in offer that I couldn't get back to on my phone. Hence, the 4 star review. I sampled some cheese and settled on blueberry cobbler cheddar, vegetable cheese curds, garlic cheese curds and chocolate cheese. The curds are yummy 10 seconds in the microwave. The chocolate cheese tastes like fudge. They also sell fudge here. The name is clever. I don't like mice. read more

Check out the sandwich deli inside The Mouse House. Nice selection of sandwiches to choose from. Likely because it's a cheese store both my husband and I had grilled cheese sandwiches. He chose marble rye bread with cheddar and swiss. I had sour dough bread with cheddar and house jack cheese. Both sandwiches were delicious! Toasty, buttery, melty=YUMMY. Next time I would request double toasted, if possible. While your sandwiches are being made, take a spin through the cheese shop. They had an incredible array of homemade fudge, packaged cheeses, meat sticks, Wisconsin made sodas and beer, etc. Worth a stop to check out!! read more

Fantastic spot to grab your Wisconsin cheese, wine, or other food or drink stuffs as you head out of Madison! All of the kitschy tourist stuff you might need too. Plus to-go eats as well! So glad I stopped on my way back home to the Twin Cities. I bought a license plate game, some cheese chunks with meat sticks and of course some Wisconsin wine! Fun place to get your Wisconsin staples and Instagrammable with that mouse on the cheese for their sign! My favorite find was the Dr. Sprecher Wisconsin's own soda brand!! So good! read more

So glad I stopped at Mousehouse Cheesehaus! Great selection of cheese and they have about any kind of cheese you can think of. Their employees are knowledgeable about the cheeses and you can ask for free samples of anything. Lots of Wisconsin souvenirs and fudge in the store as well. I also grabbed a sandwich when I was there. They use bread from a local bakery and of course their in house cheese. I got an Igor's Classic Grilled cheese which was mouse jack and Gruyère cheese on Texas toast for $7.99. Tables and chairs available for dining in quiet atmosphere. It was loaded with cheese and so delicious! Between the giant mouse decorations and the delicious cheese, it's a must-try if you're in the area. read more

I mean, anyone who's from Wisconsin knows about Mousehouse Cheesehaus. I remember driving past the big mouse on my trips to Madison, WI since I was a kid! Their store offers a great selection of different cheeses, sausages, and other Wisconsin staples. I like that they have so many different kinds of cheeses that'll satisfy any craving that I have. My favorite (obviously) are the cheese curds! You know they're good when they squeak when you eat them (tip for tourist!). read more

Cheese cheese and more cheese. Stopped here on a mini road trip and it was the perfect place to stop on our way back home. They have so much cheese here. Imagine a fridge full of cheese. And then imagine 10 more fridges of cheese. And then add some souvenirs sausages, fudge and other miscellaneous things. They sure pack a lot of things but especially cheese in this store. They do free samples which is super fun and cool to try some of their more unique flavors. We ended up getting their red curry cheese, and a few of their spicy cheeses which really had some heat! The texture and flavors are so good. Besides the cheese, the fudge also has some great flavor. I lived the one with caramel and walnut, it was some of the best fudge I've ever had and so fresh! If you're in the area definitely make a stop here! read more

Ex-cheese me but you MUST stop here. On a road trip through Wisconsin we wanted one stop to pick up some local cheese and boy are we happy we picked this spot. You can't miss the Cheesehaus from the freeway, the building itself is pretty unique looking. Once inside they have fresh nuts and fudge to die for. You can sample fudge and cheese until your hearts delight. Masks are required and safety precautions are heavily in place. There is a very clean restroom inside. After perusing the fudge section venture over to the cheese selection. From chocolate walnut cheese to smoked black pepper Gouda - the cheese selection is incredibly unique. Event the jams and jellies were fascinating. We picked up a 'moonshine' jelly. They also sell ice and other trinkets. Oh and come by hungry, their deli section makes fresh sandwiches to go. read more

Sorry, used to be a go to. Hours vary, deli not open, been a miss twice this weekend. Settled for a "to go" sandwich since deli wasn't open - inedible. The moisture in the single tomato slice had been drawn in to the bread because it was drier than dry. I know places are struggling with labor but please don't sell stuff like this. I'm hoping for a refund. I'll gladly mail it back. Hopefully they can come back up to par. read more

We stopped in since I was looking for some good Wisconsin cheese. Everything is branded in the house name, which isn't bad. However, the prices were pretty steep - more than I'd pay for the same quality from some of the cheese vendors who come south of the Wisconsin border into the tax-hungry state of Illinois. So, after walking around I bought a 6 pack of Raspberry Ale. The fudge looked good, but I was after cheese. read more

Stopping to see if they had cheese curds they do have a deli it was pretty packed. They have all sorts of different types of cheese. They do have a lot different types of cheese the customer service was A1. The only reason we did not buy anything is because we was on our way to the dells read more

Used to be the best stop ever for cheese and custom sandwiches. They stopped selling sandwiches and now have gas station pizza... major fail! What an adorable little cheese shop! Stopped off to break up the endless drive home and for a bathroom break. Little did I know I would come out armed with cheese. We got a nice lesson on cheese. I was worried that it wouldn't be refrigerated for a few hours and they assured me it would be fine, and it is. I'm always such a freak when it comes to keeping food cool, but trusted the cheese experts. A very nice lady let us try some of the cheese curds and told us how the cheese becomes a block which is something neither of us knew about. Ended up getting the garlic and dill cheese curds which were amazingly fresh and tasty. They are so good when they squeak. I stepped over to look at another case. A very helpful young gentleman helped me decide and gave me samples and offered to give me samples. Very nice trying before buying. He knew his cheese. Ended up with: -Horseradish & Chive Havarti - Swiss and Rye -Garlic Cheese and some garlic pickles. That Scope mouthwash that breaks through the onion better work! I told the guy the best cheese we have found was at Costco. He looked like he was appalled and right fully so in the cheese state. However, Costco does get some good cheese in from NY. Very nice and helpful staff and some really excellent cheese! They have a little deli counter for sandwiches, some good looking candy and other knick knacks. Worth a stop! read more

Every time I drive up to the UP, Minnesota, or generally anywhere that would require passing through Madison/ Windsor area, I always stop at Mousehouse Cheeshaus. The sampling and the staff is what brings me back. Most of the staff fluster me as their looks and attitude are as lovely as the cheese they offer; even the newbies (who seem afraid by all the flavors) seem like they have been there for months! Sampling the variety of cheeses offered makes selecting easier, yet not always on the wallet due to good staff sales skills (and cheese taste). While it may cut into profit, being able to taste 15-year old cheddar cheese and a plethora of others that I have only heard about on TV feels like an adventure, even if it is only for 10 minutes. Also, I had not idea there could be a wide selection of curds... One thing that does upset me is the selection of sausage is a bit limited, or rather they simply do have not had have my desired thin meat sticks of garlic when I visit. Those feelings are quickly amended when I peruse the gift shop area and discover the silly sock collection, every time... TLDR: The staff smiles and attitude is contagious, and their cheeses, well, deliciously cheesy. read more

Excellent sandwiches, fudge and of course cheese - this place is awesome! Love supporting great local businesses too!

Always a great experience. Forgot to use my Yelp coupon. Great service and variety. We always come back!

This place is so cheesy, in a good way! It is a tourist gift shop, but done really well. This place is big and clean! It has lots of kinds of cheese, and WI beer. They also make their own fudge. You can sample a lot of the cheese and the fudge! This place is perfect to stop for souvenirs. I was really impressed at how clean everything was including the bathrooms. Also this place is baby friendly!!! They have a koala care changing table in the women's bathroom. read more

I've been coming here for years because they have fantastic cheese! Their recent renovations has really made a big difference in ambiance. We got the maple flavored cheese, some curds, lots of fudge, smoked cheddar, and left with lots of smiles. We ate some of it in the car on the way home- rave reviews from everyone! How to spot a cheese addict: 1- You've spent over $70 on cheese here multiple times without flinching. 2- You have 9 Tupperware containers of cubed cheese in your freezer. 3- Your fiance kicked your veggies out of the vegetable drawer and made it the dedicated cheese drawer because it's the biggest. 4- Your fiance named his childhood dog after cheese when he was a youngin' ("Colby"). Check, check, check, and check. I love cheese as much at the next guy, but M is seriously addicted to the stuff. It blows my mind how much cheese he eats! So obviously Mousehouse is his Disney World, and on our way back from Hayward, we of course had to stop here to stock up. And by stocking up, I mean that we filled a cooler with a variety of cheeses you can't find in your local store. And I will admit that this wasn't the first time we filled a cooler with cheese. The inside is a decent size, but it fills up fast so it doesn't take long for claustrophobia to kick in. They let you sample any cheese you'd like before purchasing, which is freakin' awesome! The employees are friendly and helpful, which is always appreciated when you're getting elbowed and stepped on by other cheese addicts scrambling to get their fix with a sample slice. A little bit of cheer can (sort of) help you forget about your toes getting smashed. They also carry quite a selection of craft beers, and of course fudge, knick knacks, and other Wisconsin-y items. So if you forgot to grab a souvenir elsewhere, you can pick up some postcards, shot glasses, and the like. If you're hungry for more than cheese samples, they do make sandwiches or offer pre-made ones. So, we ended up buying ten different kinds of cheese, and with the fancy schmancy check-in offer, I saved 10%. Chicken soup is one of our favorites; it tastes exactly like the soup. The Ghost Pepper cheese was fabulously spicy as anticipated. I didn't really care for the Taco Cheese, Raspberry Chipotle Cheddar or Pizza cheese; the flavors weren't what I expected. Tomato & Basil Cheddar, Buffalo Wing, Salami Colby, Cheddar with Bleu Cheese, Green and Black Olive, Horseradish and Chive, and Beer Cheddar were our favorites this time around. The curds are delicious but you can find them anywhere in Wisconsin. The Whips were interesting; it was our first time trying them but we didn't purchase any. We once drove here just for cheese. Seriously. We weren't on our way up north or had other plans. We literally drove from Naperville to Windsor just to get cheese for M. His mother commented on our freezer, stating that we could build a "cheese-gloo" out of all the bricks of cheese. I laughed at the thought, and without missing a beat, M said "No, that wouldn't work. I would eat myself out of house and home." And I wouldn't doubt that for a second. read more

Three times I've tried to order through GrubHub and my order has been cancelled. Called the place and they didn't care.

Super tasty string cheese! I had string cheese from some other Wisconsin shop a few years ago, but couldn't remember where, which was unfortunate because I loved it. For a "cheesehaus" this place really doesn't have much cheese. I'd say about 70% of the store is "not cheese" meaning t-shirts, souvenirs, fudge, beer, wine, jellies and the like. My local grocer has a better selection and better prices (by far!). That said, it's a touristy place and fun to stop at. The staff is really nice and happy to offer you samples of anything so you're sure you like it before you invest. Prices are pretty high. You'll like this place a lot more if you're from out of state and don't have a ready source for delicious WI cheese and tasty New Glarus beer. More than cheese, but cheese... If you love cheese, you'll like this place. Heck, even if you don't, there's still plenty of other stuff to look at (beef jerkey, beer/wine, fudge, etc.). But really, it's abou the cheese. I love me some fresh cheese curds, and I have yet to be let down here. If you're weary, just ask someone if they're fresh. They know, and they'll tell you. The aged cheddar is pretty great if you're in the mood for that. I will always grab a bag of mozzarella whips - the kids and I will take care of those before they hit the fridge. My dad is a big fan of this place as well. He'll get an order of brick or some other stinky cheese before heading south and they'll give it a couple extra dips in wax to help it travel better. read more

We stopped in here today for our first visit. The staff here is amazing and have tons knowledge about their products. Ask a question and find out what I mean. Do you like samples???
